    ramiller: You may just want to consider a roof-mounted Phalanx CIWS system instead. Could come in handy if a Suburban Assault Vehicle gets too close, and the best part is, they're radar controlled so you don't even have to take your hands off the wheel to watch the carnage unfold ;)

    Eric - Oops, I mis-spoke. I just went through my records and the WRX cover came from Covercraft (covercraft.com). I actually had to special order it, because they didn't have the pattern at the time. If I remember correctly, they actually went to a Soob dealer and measured the car. I think the pattern number is on the front of the cover. I'll check later and let you know.

    Now to answer your question, my cover is made from their "Noah" material. Also have one on my Forester and have never had any kind of problem.

    sounds like a definite improvement over the sidewinders. . .
    If our guys'd had a few platoons of fast-moving WRXs outfitted with those, and machine guns mounted on the hood, the war in Afganistan would have been over in 3 days . . . :)

    I will be gettin' my WRX next week and was wondering about whether or not to buy this. I drive 25k miles a year so will have 100k miles in 4 years. The cost of the policy is around $2K and will be expired before I know it! Any help appreciated!! Thanks.

    That price is ludicrous. It's the highest quote I've ever heard by a long shot. $1200 was the previous high, and $900 is a good target price.

    I'm interested if anyone has any suggestions for better audio equipment for the WRX. In particular, perhaps a better radio/cd and improved speakers that would fit into the existing speaker locations.

    I did get the upgraded speakers and subwoofer, but I think the speakers have a muffled sound no matter how I adjust them.

    has anyone here put the vishnu o package on yet. I have read the post but still have some concerns.
    also has anyone lowered the front to level the car without replacing the set up with adjustables. i am fixing to put 17' wheels and would like to level the car out.

    i'm a brand spanking new wrx owner and don't have the time to read thru all 4000+ posts on this board. I've had my eye on this baby for some time and have scanned thru the post now and then, but am looking for a somewhat consolidated or categorized view of the posts. I'm looking for maintenance tips, known problems, etc.

    any suggestions?

    Thinking of buying an AWD/4dr/turbocharged sports sedan, well I would wait until the late months of 2002. Subaru is expected bring WRX STi (better than WRX) to the U.S. Also Mitsubishi is going to counter with the Lancer Evolution VII (contains 276hp! TURBO! AWD!) and its going to start out between $23000-$26000. Makes you think what might Nissan do (maybe bring thing the Skyline to the U.S markets).

    Skyline will likely come over as an Infinity product. EVO will be here but will likely be modified to have much less horspower probably closer to about 240-255 IMHO.

    I'm not worried about the STi at all. It's slightly out of my price range for one. And in the meantime, I've been seriously enjoying my WRX. Besides, by the time the STi comes, my warranty will be over and with a few mods - FASTER! As for the Skyline, it'll probably be about $45-50,000. I'm sure you'll get what you pay for, but it's not what I'm interested in.

    Infiniti will soon offer a G35, with probably more than the 255hp in the I35 and RWD. I believe it's a clone of the Skyline, but the price will be higher than the I35, not less. Maybe $40 grand or so, perhaps $35.

    The WRX' success did open lots of doors, though. Now the Japanese manufacturers won't be so afraid to once again offer their best here.

    Have you peeps looked at the suberu build your own wrx web site....sheesh the turbo version starts at 24grand and add just a few options and wam ur up to 28grand...add all the options and:33 grand.
    a little 227hp econobox with cheezy plastic for 33grand...get real....maybe if they made a 280hp version it would be worth its weight in plastic.

    I used the Subaru website, and started with the WRX Sedan.

    I added the Quad-Balanced Wheels (the dealer balances each wheel FOUR times to ensure accuracy), the 24K Gold-Plated Cupholders (a MAJOR improvement over the standard ones), air-conditioned glove compartment (don't laugh, some cars have this), leather-trimmed trunk upholstery, Multi Function Passenger-Side Heads Up Display (allows the passenger to view such vital information as current radio setting, outside weather conditions, and accelerometer logs without taking their eyes off the windshield) and DownForce Kit (200 pounds of platinum bolted to the car's unibody)

    The grand total was $33,156, not including dealer prep, tax, tags, title, destination, delivery, pizza delivery, baby delivery, foot massage, (bicycle) pedal adjustments, sunvisor wax, and muffler paint.

    Paisan and I do know a couple of guys who own ~$33,000 WRXs. With their aftermarket parts, one runs 12.5 second 1/4 miles at the dragstrip. The other one, a Blaze Yellow one, is outfitted more for looks, but was rated for power on a dyno at ~280 HP at the wheels.

    I'll tell them about the leather trunk lining option.

    I think some of the I-clubbers have topped over $35K easily. Crazy if you ask me, but that's just me.

    That's serious loot, considering a local Audi dealer has half a dozen S4 sedans in stock that he's willing to sell for about $35K each, a bit more if you want Tiptronic. Now that the new A4 is out, no one around here wants the "old" body style (which to my eyes is a more attractive design - too bad I don't have that kind of $$).

    For 35k, though we are talking 300hp, 18" rims, tires, HID lighting, suspensions, etc. etc. The whole nine yards. The S4 couldn't touch the $35K ones IMHO.

    If you want a overheating over boosteed ecanobox im sure u could do it for 33k, on the other hand I will still be flying by you on my kawasaki ZX12 which I got slightly used (under 3k miles) for 8 grand and havent modified poked or proded a thing on it...

    there are no box-stock cars—anywhere—that can out-accelerate your "average" box-stock superbike. Period.

    I'm working from memory here, but I know there are box-stock superbikes that can crack the 11 second 1/4 mile barrier. I know there is at least one that can get in the high 10s. I don't think there are any box-stock cars that can do that. If there are, they must be priced north of $100K. I'm almost certain that even the Viper can't match the quickest bikes out there.

    I will be away at my place upstate playing in the snow! It's my annual "Guy's Weekend" away from the wives, girlfriends etc. Saturdays are a bad day I rarely make any of the Queens meets cause I usually have 10K things going on on the weekends. Once auto-x and time-trial season opens up weekends will be totally out of the question.

    I know that. There were 11-sec street bikes like 15 years ago. My point was simply that comparing a bike to a regular car makes as much sense as comparing a production car to a Top Fuel dragster, since they have so little in common.

    Bikes are more fun. No, I don't currently own a bike; haven't owned one in over 25 years. However, of all the vehicles I've owned or driven over the years—which is a bunch, none gave me more pure pleasure than a motorcycle.

    Ive heard the Subaru shortthrow shifters are not as good as the Kartboy. Subaru offers two, an STi, and some other one, forget the brand.

    I think it really depends on what your tastes are. I initially ordered a short shifter but it wasn't isntalled on time (port installed). But after the test drive I decided against it. The throws on the stock were substantially shorter than my old Maxima. I imagine it's the same case in comparison with many others makes.

    I just picked up my WRX a few days ago. The only ones they could find in the color I wanted had the short throw shifter, titanium shift knob, and boost gauge. All the ones in my area that had the short throw also came packaged with the boost gauge and titanium shift knob.

    With my limited miles on the car (and under break-in driving), I can tell a little bit of a difference between the stock ones (you can shift with just your finger tips), but if I were ordering a car, I would not choose the option. The stock shifter is good enough for me and I always am a little skeptical about port installed accessories.

    If you are really interested in it, I definitely recommend finding one (even if you have to drive to another town) to test it out before getting one.

    I am sure bike can give you ton of pleasures and ...pains that you will never forget. All of the people I know the ride bike has their shoulder screwed back together with a stainless steel bolt. I saw a guy spilled in front of me at 80 mph going around a turn, it was not pretty. But I am sure bike is more fun..

    My two cents: The standard shifter is really quite nice--medium length throws, easy shift effort, and a slightly mechanical feel that starts to grow on you. A little bit notchy, yes, but not objectionable in the least.

    The short-throw gives you quicker shifts but at a cost--the effort required for each shift is a little higher. For some guys, knocking a couple tenths off acceleration times makes the trade-off worthwhile. If you do a lot of club events, it might be worth getting, but for everyday driving you will find the stock set-up very pleasurable to use.--RA

    I agree. The shifter has all the right qualities for me. Decent gated feeling, just long enough of a throw that I never have to second guess which gear I'm going into. I drive Miata's which have one of the best shifters on the market and to be honest, I don't mind the WRX shifter at all. Also, the WRX is one of the few cars that I can heel and toe downshift with ease. Pedal placement is perfect for my short legs/feet. I wouldn't bother with the short shifter just because it increases the effort of shifting and makes the gates seem tighter

    I didn't change (notice I didn't say upgrade) to the short-shifter is because of the standard shifters ability to function very well in bumper-to-bumper traffic. I certainly don't desire greater shifting effort in this situation. As mentioned in the last two posts, the std shifter's ability to facilitate easy heal & toe driving is wonderful.

    The Kawasaki has slightly less weather protection, and the crumple zones are basically your upper body, so I think it's a bit unfair to make a direct comparison.

    Bikes are more fun, no doubt. But I got tired after having 3 of them stolen from me, even with Krytonite locks.

    Besides, there are no child seat tether anchors for my toddler! ;-)
