To answer your question, no. I was told it was either the manufacturer's rebate of $1000 or the dealer's financing, at the time.
I purchased my 2000ES a few months ago. It came with the optional 4 Season's package, 6-CD changer, Roof rack and a Sunroof, for a little under $25,000. I decided to take the manufacturer's rebate instead and financed through my local credit union. Based on the responses that I've read, I believe I made the right choice! I hope this information helps!

Alright, ready to take the plunge. Help me figure the specifics of my deal.

2000Emerald LX w/ four seasons, security, rear AC, 3 in 1 audio, roof rack, and emissions.

Dealer's initial cash price was 22,118, including a $1000 manufacturers rebate and $750 dealer incentive. He said we would have to give up the rebate and incentive if we wanted 48 months at 0 %. After some discussion, currently on the table is: $23,468 at 0% for 48 months. He said we can even finance the 5% Massachusetts sales tax. This seems like a good deal but not quite great, especially given that the 2002s will be out in 6 months, and others are talking about their dealers offering larger rebates.

    MSRP on this is $25,125
    Invoice is $22,874

I thought we should be able to get it for $23,000. Should I push?

Thanks for your help--We're almost there!

Looking for a 2000 LX: As mentioned above, I am forced to part with my beloved 2000 Silver LX with 11000 miles on it. It has the Security package, 3/1 audio and rear air - no rack. I'm in a bit of a bind, so I only need what I owe: $18250. I am in Michigan. Reply if interested. Thanks.

I have been reading a lot about how the transmission hunts. This ties in with the engine's power topic, but I have decided I can live with that, based on the comments I have read here. I am going in this weekend to drive the 2000 and 2001 back to back since I haven't done that yet. Salesperson says the shifting points have been lowered on the 2001 to make it shift smoother. There are still some 2000 MPV's on the lot ( 170 hp ) along side the 2001's ( 160 hp ). Can anyone say that this "lowering the shifting points" fixed it for the 2001? If so does anyone know if a 2000 can just be reset? When I asked the salesperson, he said no, because it was a mechanical change, not a matter of reprogramming the chip or whatever governs the transmission. Would like to confirm this though, since there are good incentives on the 2000 with 10 extra hp. Thanks.

I have owned 2 2000 MPVs one was a very early production DX, and now a late production LX.

When I had both in the driveway, I noticed that the late production shifting was much smoother than the early. Having always driven M/T cars, I kinda liked the rough, kick you in the rear shift and less slip. However, for the majority of folks, the smoother the better.

So to answer your question, it's not as clear cut as 2000/2001.

As far as your salesperson, they are wrong. It is a programming change. However, I'm not sure if thy can reprogram the PCM for this change. Check with the service department.

Since I live in Western Massachusetts, Michigan seems too far for this deal, especially since I would want to test it out. It does sound like a great deal. My husband will be in Chicago in March. If it is still available, maybe he could test it out then. Let me ask him what he thinks--I guess he would then have to drive it home. How far is the drive from Chicago to Detroit?

    Thanks,

    Wendy
  • ckmccoy5ckmccoy5 Member Posts: 24
Chicago is about 4.5 to 5 hours drive from Detroit. I can be reached directly at mmccoy@meadowbrook.com if anyone wants more info on the 2000 LX for sale.

I have a 2001. I feel it downshifts a little "too quick" in some instances when I'm just gently pressing the pedal for a little more speed in traffic. Highway speed is no problem. This thing was meant to cruise at 70MPH.

I found out from MAZDA USA that the duratec 3.0L engine currently used in the Mazda Tribute will be the standard engine for the LX and ES models. Not sure if it will be std in the DX or optional. No word on pricing. I would guess it will not increase prices much. MAZDA is reacting to the only negative about the MPV and that is its smallish engine. Seems they've been reading the press as well as reacting to some concerns from customers (that's nice to know).

The new 3.0L will be 200HP, and provide 200lbs torque at 4750 RPM (Tribute specs - they may differ on the MPV). This will certainly bring the MPV in line with the big boys. Note, the 200HP rating is based on premium fuel. Hopefully, MAZDA will design the engine management system to accept regular fuel (at the expense of some power -- like the Odyssey).

Those of you worried about the lack of power, but otherwise love the MPV, just wait it out. For the rest, expect to see even better deals in the summer on MPV pricing for 2001's (I hope)! Another tool for your bargaining pleasure.

Hi, I felt so bad when my wife told me she lost
the key and the remote to the MPV LX. I have been searching around where she went, but no luck so far. So I turn to our club to ask for help for the best way that I can do to avoid theft. When I start thinking there are three locks plus ignition lock, plus key less entry system, I feel miserable. Would you suggest something that I can do to regain the safety for our MPV?

    Thanks,
  • javadocjavadoc Member Posts: 1,167
Well, the keyless entry is simple for the dealer to re-program, it's just a matter of plugging the diagnostic equipment into the OBD-II terminal in your van. The next step would be to (gulp) re-key all the locks. You'd be out $80 for just the keys and I suppose the lock cylinders are not very cheap either, and like you said you'd need 3 for doors and one ignition cylinder kit.

I'm not sure about this, but I thought the keyless entry system works like this:

If you use the keyfob to lock the door, the alarm goes off if you use the key to either unlock the doors, or start the engine. Someone chime in and tell me I'm wrong if that's not the case. Hmmmm, I'll try out this theory when I get home.

I would call the dealer, and ask them if when you buy a spare key set, meaning all new microchipped keys, would this render the original (lost) keys worthless in starting the van. There might be some security in that move.

    Hope that helps,

After looking for a year I bought today! I think I received an GREAT deal.
This is what I got...2000XL, moonroof, touring pkg, rear-air, fog lights, 6-CD..and I had the dealer give me at NO COST a Mazda factory roof rack and rear spoiler installed...MSRP on the car not encluding rack and spoiler was $26,600...I bought the van for $20,500...and received 0% for 48 months...YEAH!!!!!
The only problem is the COLOR, not my first choice...it's TEAL, what do you all think???...after a few hours with it here at home the color is kind of growing on me...ha, ha,

  • sportmomsportmom Member Posts: 13
...I also stopped by my local Waltmart on the way home and bought the clutter catcher...it's very nice and the color matches well...get one of these if you haven't already,

Hey Sportsmom, you are one lucky duck. Where do you live and who is your dealer? I have searched around quite a bit looking at 2000s and found nothing even close to the deal you got!

Congrats and enjoy. Buy the way, teal was our first color choice and we couldn't find one anywhere!

I just purchased a Silver 2001 LX with the Security Package, Rear A/C, Roof Rack, and Ent. System (TV-which is offered free now - yes we opted for this instead of the $1,000 because we travel a bit and thought it was worth it for our 3 yr old and 7 yr old).

List was $25,650, invoice price here on Edmunds is $24,447 (less $1,372 for the TV comes to $23,075) with an Edmunds TMV of $21,951. I purchased it today for $22,674.30, $400 below invoice! :) I was pretty happy and I felt like the Sales guy (whom I wasn't too fond of) probably made enough on the deal to "feed his children" (although he didn't act that way). I did my financing through E-Loan for 60 months so it worked out better than the 6.9% from Mazda which is why we took the Ent. System deal. Went through Autobytel and also looked at CarsDirect to get my ammo before going in. I think it was a win-win deal. One problem though, the Ent. System did not work through the stereo but did through the headphones. Needless to say, it's still there as they will fix it on Monday. The plus is that they gave me one of the Demo MPV's (like the one I bought) to drive until then and they are going to deliver it too my house when it's fixed (they've narrowed it to a wiring problem).

I love it though and it really has more room than I thought it would. I don't know what everyone is complaining about as far as the engine goes. It has enough pickup for me and cruises and passes with pep. I'm sure with the air on it will be a little slower but I'm not Jeff Gordon so I'm not too worried about the strain on the engine.

wpenner I think you could do better. If I could get below $23,000 for a 2001 with a higher list you surely can. Check out CarsDirect.com. I went in their armed with that and a specific price I was going to pay (since I wasn't financing through the dealer) and that was that.

    Good luck to all.
  • windeyewindeye Member Posts: 9
It seems I'll have to re-program the keyless entry system, and replace keys and key cylinders.
Gonna cost me a couple of hundred $$$, is it the price to keep a wife home?

    Thanks again.
  • wpennerwpenner Member Posts: 25
Thanks so much--I do seem to need some hand holding through this process. I could get the 2000LX with security, 4 seasons, rear air, roof rack, 3 in 1 audio for 22,118, or go for the $23,500 if we go with 48 months financing at 0 percent --no interest! So I figure that is worth losing the rebate plus some of the dealer incentive as we can hang onto our cash longer.

Sounds like my dealer should be able to go lower since you didn't take the rebate. I just hate haggling so much. I don't mind paying $300-400 more to avoid it,but I'm thinking perhaps I should be able to get much lower than he is offering.

That is a cool deal you got with the entertainment system. The kids will love it!

I'm still in awe of the deal sportsmom got! Come on, what was your trick?

I'm getting excited hearing from others who have taken the plunge!

I'm glad that you all think I received a GOOD deal on my new buggy... spent ONE whole year looking at new stuff, first I wanted a Tribute... cute but toooo smalll...then a Windstar...toooo biggg, ahhh...MVP just right. I was in every dealership with in a 200 mile drive of my home... the dealers all knew me by name.. I travel between towns for work and I would just stop in from time to time and kick the tires so to speak. Okay, on Thursday I stopped in again to a dealer that by know knows my name and I think was tired of seeing me AGAIN and he asked me what he had to do to get me in this van... we spent about 3 hours "working" the deal and befor I knew it I was signing papers and driving home. This dealer has 2 2000's left on his lot 1 XL and 1 ES...all over 90 days in inventory...if you would like his name e-mail me direct...we live in Kansas. I also delt direct with the sales manager...not a salesman...the manager can work a deal much better... numbers are way down for this month...I think if you were to go in on the 28th you might be suprised what kind of deal you could receive. I did ask a young sales person how businees was this month, he said he likes to sell at LEAST 10 units a month, so far for Feb. 1 unit sold...

PS... The dealer said the reason I received a good deal was because he has had TEAL cars befor and they don't sell well on his lot...very conservitive area...I hope this helps...I priced the XL he has left, it's in Emrald green...he quoted me a $2,500 higher price difference.

I'm looking to make the move from a Blazer to a MPV. Can you tell me how much room is behind the third seat in the seat well... is it too tight, etc. Also, I noticed on Edmunds that one of the options is now called roof rails, not a roof rack. Does anyone know if this means there are no cross members? I need the cross members to put a cargo box on the roof.
  • sportmomsportmom Member Posts: 13
homep18...I just returned from a shopping trip to Wally-mart...I had 8 paper bags turned wide-ways and 3 12 pk's of soda...plus a gallon of milk and extras...all fit very nicely in the rear, I like the fact that every thing sits down in the well, no tipping over when you take a curve to fast. If you would like I can measure the area for you, let me know...
First day of ownership up-date...I LOVE this VAN...I have been to Wally-world-mart, sonic(don't tell the kids)..the bank,an ATM and to a school parking lot and HWY driving. The MPV is preforming just as I had hoped...

    Hi,

For all the Canadian MPV owners out there, I just wanted to let you know that the "Clutter Catcher centre console", is an excellent fit with the 2001 MPV. I just made the short trip over to Buffalo (Amherst actually) to pick one up. The exact same item sells for $85.00 CDN. at the local Wal-Mart store, but only $24.95 US in the States.

We also made a trip to the local Krispy Kreme Doughnut store. Wow, those things are amazing!!! Where have you Yanks, been hiding this gem? Watch out Tim Horton's, when Krispy Kreme gets here, there's going to be a huge Doughnut war!!

    Sportmom (Kim),

For some reason I'm having a problem e-mailing you at the listed address. Would you mind e-mailing me the info at wendypenner@hotmail.com.

Thanks. I was thinking that if I can get a deal even close to yours, I could still pay a broker to ship the van to me and come out ahead of my deal for the LX.

Thanks so much, Hope you're loving the van.

Hi Does anyone know what Octane should be used in the 2001 MPV? The manual says 91, but in brackets it has something about R+M/2 = 87. So should it be 91 or 87? Does the Canadian Model differ from the American one, in this regard? So far I've been using 87 and it seems to run just fine.

    Thanks

We bought two weeks ago at Bay State in Framingham. They had several 2000's left. We got our LX (security, 4seasons, 3in1,dualAC)for $76 over invoice (plus their $95 "document" fee) with the 0%/4yr. They said we could alternately get the $1750 cash back. There was no haggle. Go for same deal.
  • windowphobe6windowphobe6 Member Posts: 765
Mazda has muffed these up before. (R+M)/2 is the figure that's actually posted at a US pump; it is the average of the two most common octane-computations methods, Research Octane Number and Motor Octane Number. Plain old garden-variety regular unleaded tests out at 91 RON and about 82 to 83 MON; the average rounds up to 87. I suspect the Canadian requirements are essentially the same.
  • toddmodemtoddmodem Member Posts: 19
Thanks Windowphobe6!! That makes perfect sense.

Here's another one for you! While reading the manual, I noticed that Mazda had pasted over the Oil requirement page with what appears to be updated information. The Oil requirement for the MPV is 5w20 ....what the heck is that? I've never heard of 5w20. In fact I don't think I've ever seen it on the shelves. Here in Ontario, the winters get very cold, but the summers also get very hot. I'm a little leery about using a "20" in the summer. Anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks
    Todd

The deal you got is incredible. Here are the results of my research and negotiation:
First I have to say that I have been looking at 01 MPV's but I originally looked at the 00's when the had a few left in my area (VW Florida). The 00's had dealer incentives from $1750 to $2750 depending on the packages on the vehicles. Sounds like you qualified for the $2750 discount. The dealer claimed they could not offer both the dealer incentive AND the 0% financing, I then called Mazda and they confirmed this. If you got both you are very lucky. The invoice on your vehicle is $24156 less $2750 for a real dealer cost of $21406. The holdback is about $450, which means at NO PROFIT to the dealer the cost is
$20,956 and they sold it to you at $456 less than that. What a deal. Is this a brand new 2000 or a demo. The best the dealers will do in my area is invoice, less dealer incentive, Plus $200 AND a $279 doc fee (which I will not pay and therefore have not purchased a vehicle) I am now at the point of waiting for the 02's and seeing how much they will cost with a larger engine (if they do in fact offer one). My guess is the 02's with a better engine will be more costly, probably no incentives and no buying at invoice, but the 01's
will be heavily discounted because of a less popular engine. Anyway my 2 cents and I keeping looking and learning. John

I've had my Sand Mica 2001 for about a week, and I'm almost fanatical about it already. The reason for the "almost" is the dreaded "shakes." I took it out on I-79 yesterday and beginning in the mid 50's, extending up to 70 [as high as I was able to take it on the crowded interstate] I could feel the vibration in the steering wheel--sort of a Magic Fingers sensation. It's not too bad--the wheel doesn't shimmy or anything--but there is a definite vibration against my hands. It would be really tiring to grip the wheel for any length of time at highway speeds.

I'm going to check the tire pressure tomorrow, and I know there are other things that can be done, but I can't remember where I found the info on the earlier posts. Can anybody save me the trouble of searching through all 900 posts? I need something I can tell the dealer to try if the problem isn't overinflation. Based on some of the posts about dealer incompetence, I'm really dreading the process of getting this fixed before our vacation in June. But I think I'd better get the process started--ASAP

Other than that, I continue to be impressed by the car. I'm finding it quick and responsive enough off the line, and with a little bit of care, the shifts are smooth and predictable. Merging on the interstate was NOT a problem. The van won't win any gold medals at Monte Carlo, but from a dead stop I managed to get into tight traffic without being run over by anything or even without worrying that I was about to be.

There is absolutely no pull in any direction--it tracks like a cat, and handles like a dream. Handling and around-town acceleration continue to be a very pleasant experience.

The sound system impresses the hell out of me too. I have the standard 4-speaker system (with CD and cassette), and the sound on it beats anything I've ever heard in any car I've ever owned--rich, mellow, and powerful. Amazing for standard issue.

So far, great car. Now if I can just get the vibration straightened out. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out with that

I finally called Boston, which is a three hour drive from me and found a dealership with 3 2000s left. They are offering $5,000 dealer cash off of MSRP. Or, $2,500 w/ 48 month 0%.

If it doesn't sell today (dealer only open for a few more hours), they will hold it until we get their tomorrow. Deal is:

    Sand Mica LX w/
    dual air
    four seasons
    touring
    moonroof

    for $21,950,

That is $300 less than the LX we were going to buy, but with a moonroof and touring instead of security and roof rack. I'm pretty pleased. However, not such a good deal if we pay $2500 more for the financing.

For anyone who is interested, they also have an:

    ES Emerald green
    moonroof
    6 disk cd changer
    4 seasons
    leather (of course)

    $22,985.

These prices seem really good to me-below invoice for the ES, at least. Still Sportsmom got the best deal.

Alright--now I just can't wait to get it and it bettern not start shaking on the way home.

    Thanks for all the help.

What catalog did see the bike attachment for the roof rack? Was it the regular brochure, or the accessory brochure? Will the attachment fit on 2000's ? How many bikes will fit on it? Thanks.

    Hi,
It's the catalog for 2001 MPV's, you can get one from any Mazda dealer...in the back it shows accessories...the van in the picture has 2 mountain type bikes on the roof rack with attachment...I also noticed that the rear step bumper plate is longer for 2001, so if anyone is thinking about buying one I would order the one for model year 2001...It looks like it covers the whole width/lenght of the bumper...much better coverage than the 2000.
Does anyone have the cargo mat?...if so would you recomend buying one?
    Kim (sportmom)
PS...Day 3 of ownership and I like the teal color better and better...

Hope that car is still waiting for you when you get there. It sounds like you got a terrific deal on it.

And you're gonna love that Sand Mica color.

    Good luck!
  • kelly5mpvkelly5mpv Member Posts: 11
I bought one from the dealer. It was around $50, but it kind of feels cheap. You would probably do better elsewhere. I know some people have mentioned about weathertech mats that have a raised lip on them to keep anything on it (water, sand, dirt etc.). I've had my Sand Mica for 6 months and only have 4K on it, but I have had no problems. The only complaint I have is the sun visors feel real cheap.

I got a price for a 2001 MPV van that is an LX with the 4-Seasons Package and the LX Security package and the roof rack. The color is Emerald Mica. I also live in NJ. The Price I got is 23,400 with tax and tags and destination charge, total out the door.
  • rjr425rjr425 Member Posts: 53
I paid $22046 for a 2001 LX with Security Package and roof rack but no 4-Seasons [plus tax and tags], so it looks as if you got a pretty good deal from here. I guess it would depend on how much of that cost was tax. Basically, I got mine for $1k under invoice. And I think I got a pretty damn good deal, especially when you look at what kind of prices they're asking -- and getting -- for the Ody. Yours sounds somewhere in the same area, so it looks as though you did pretty well. Congratulations on your car and deal.
  • julyarjulyar Member Posts: 35
Good luck on your purchase, and I hope you get the deal you want. For 2000 models, I would not pay a penny over invoice with 0% financing, and would shoot for $200-500 below. I bought my 2000 in January of 2000 for invoice + $1 and 0% financing, and now the 2000s are a year older so you should be able to get a better deal than that or at least the same (mine was 36 months at 0% - not quite as good as 48). Interest expense can be pretty high depending on the price of the vehicle and the rate. For example, 24000 at 7% for 48 months, will amount to $3600 of interest payments. If you put more down, and can get a better interest rate, then the difference will be less. Good luck.

Hi! I've been lurking here for a few months while I narrow my minivan choice. We are thinking of getting an LX later this year with rear air, touring package, and possibly 4 seasons. My questions for the ever-helpful group:
    1. With the "super sound" 9-speaker package on the LX touring, does that mean we lose the tape deck? Seems like it.....
    2. We live in the Phoenix suburbs. Very hot summer, very little winter. Is the 4 seasons package worth it if I only need 1 season? (ie, does it make it A LOT cooler?) We definitely will get the rear air (flashbacks to childhood in back of VW bus!) I'd appreciate anyone's experience who lives in the Southwest.
Thanks to all who have already answered most of my un-posted queries.

Wendy, Sounds like you have my van. We bought a white (My wife wanted Green) 2000lx the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Equipped as you described in post 854. The sticker was $25190.00. We got it for $20922.00 plus tax and fees(dealer on-line reg fee $31.25, Documentary fee $55, Notary fee $16, title fee $32.50 and transfer plate $6.00) no trade in. Originally they offered it to me for $22922.00 and I walked. They came back with the same offer plus "Factory Rebate" of $2000 a week or so later. It had 13 miles on it. I financed through a credit union (which I joined just for the cheap financing) for 6.85%. Originally I wanted the Honda, but couldn't refuse the Mazda offer and haven't looked back. The power is fine, I think its a perception problem. When accelerating from a stand still it sounds like the engine is working hard and you aren't moving very fast. But if you glance down at the Tach you will see you are only reving at 2500 not in the reline like it sounds. Also, it is deceptive when you are cruising. Because it feels like you aren't going all that fast but then you realize you are passing people quickly and you look at the speedo and you are going 70 in a 45 zone. The size is deceptive also, we have 4 kids ages 12, 11, 8 and 5 and they love it. My brother-in-law asked me if I shouldn't have bought the Bigger domestic vans for the space. We moved from a standard 96 Voyager to this van and I feel this van has more space. It's a tad narrower but with the captains seats in the middle the kids feel they have more space than our old van bench seat. Also the well for the magic seat more than makes up for the narrowness. We haven't packed it for a vacation yet, but I figure any interior space lacking compared to old van will be made up with the roof rack.

Also the well is really great for groceries. Another note, the narrowness really benifits you in parking lots and In your garage. Our old van was really scratched from the kids taking their bikes out of the garage when both cars were in the garage.

Finally, I can't wait for nice weather so we can utilize the back windows that you can actually open (Imagine that).

PS we have 5500 miles now and the sound system rocks. One visit back to dealer for a heat shield that vibrated

The super sound system has a Cassette player.

Just get rear air...never mind the 4 seasons package unless you plan to tow something. I too was subject to a VW bus as a kid. I don't recall a difference from the front to the back :), it was always hot.

My wife and I have been in the market for a mini-van and have finally decided on the MPV...for better or worse. We love everything about it except are a little wary of the Ford Duratech engine since we got burned by a Ford motor on our current car. We originally were looking at the 2001 LX model with Security and 4-season packages, but an opportunity came up today that looks pretty good. Our local dealer has a 2000 ES, almost fully loaded (no roof rack, moonroof or 6-CD stereo). The final price we negotiated was about $1,000 under invoice. Does anyone think we can do better?

I haven't been following going prices lately for the MPV, so I'll skip answering that question.

I wouldn't be afraid of the Duratech engine at all. The Duratech mill is solid. It's very well engineered, with the help of Cosworth, and has been flogged by many many Contour/Mistique/Cougar owners, and keeps coming back for more. The Ford motor you should run from is the 3.8l motor, which has absolutely nothing in common with the Duratech family of motors.

In fact, here's an interesting little Duratech story. I was at the races last weekend and someone had put a 2.5L Duratech in a race car, and ran it all weekend long...with revs to 12,000 rpm (according to the tach's telltale). This was a bone-stock motor with the rev limiter removed. It was fun to watch, and tell my fellow race-workers, "That's the same engine that's in our MPV." So, worry not about the powerplant in the MPV. :-)

We're in Western Mass and interested in the Boston area dealer that has the 2000 ES in Emerald Mica. Please let us know, it might be worth a drive for us. Thanks.

My wife, and I are in the same boat as the javadoc's. I have been looking for a
    2000 LX
    Touring package
    Dual Air
    Moonroof

    SAND MICA preferrable.

What should be a terrific deal on this package (I will betaking the 0.0/48 months financing). We live in the Hampton roads (southeastern Virginia) area.

We do not mind driving for 2-3 hours; any advice on a good dealership in the Midatlantic
    :-)

    Hi,

I was just there today, at Quirk Mazda in Quincy Mass. They have a website though I couldn't give it to you offhand--just do a search. We negotiated a solid deal on the phone, $5,000 off sticker and that is just what we got. They did try to jerk us around with our trade though. It is a big dealership and it took a lot of time since they were very busy, but perhaps after holiday it will be better. Not sure I would recommend the salesman we worked with, Fred, since after driving across state he tried to change his tune on our trade, though after insisting he did give us what we had discussed by phone.

We got a great deal and I hope you can too.

NOt sure about the ES but they have another sand mica LX--can't remember the options--touring, 4 seasons, and cd player I think. No moonroof.

    Good luck
