    nowadays many a V6 engine makes this much HP.

    this is kind of embarrassing for an 8-cylinder. Especially at that price.

    A 270hp Passat with a W8 and MSRP of over 37K. Seems a little under power and over priced. Found info right here on edmunds, just click on the "NEW" button on the menu bar at the top of this page and then on VW link.

    whoops. Misread the question there. I didn't do the valve cover lettering because I got the calipers done pretty late at night, and I had been working on the paint way too long (dry time between coats, "honey do" distractions, kid stuff, etc.). If I would have attempted it at that time you wouldn't have been able to tell what they said. lol. If I try it I think I'll mask it. Should be pretty easy and look better.

    sdmike, if you can find a hard rubber roller or something similar, and brush the paint onto it first, it should roll paint right over the tops of the letters without getting it all over.

    BTW those red calipers look good! Now mine look bad, never noticed before. Damn you! Just kidding...lol

    lol! I know what you mean. Once I saw glennbp's blue calipers with his silver M I started getting caliper envy. This board sure is a double-edged sword. :p Interesting idea on the roller. I would think it would be very hard to get the paint consistent. Every time I try using a roller for something like that it either looks splotchy (not enough paint) or I get it all over (too much).

    Hey guys, I need some help finding something. On my 300M page I have links to the specification and product guides for the 2000 and 2001 Ms. There is a TON of information in these guides, but I haven't been able to find any for the 99 or 02. Anyone found these on the web anywhere yet? If someone is real good at searching maybe lend a hand? Thanks.

    Morning from chilly Noo Yawk. Agree with you SD....dealer hates when you walk into a showroom packing some serious paper. They must hate the internet. when I went to uy eMily, i didn't have a leg to stand on--they only had two on the lot--steel blue and a Cypress Green-which I almost jumped at... No bargaining power ona car not on the lot. Had eMily flatbedded from some other dealer. They didn't even want to give me a set of wheel locks--sheesh.
    On the other hand, buying my daughter's 2001 VW Jetta GLs (yup, a gurlz car 8+Þ ..), I went in with TWO folders--one from edmunds.com--THANK YOU, edmunds--and got the car for $200 UNDER dealer invoice. Was the end of da month--quota's ya know....
    Speaking of Jetta's--my oldest also has 1999 Jetta. comes home Sunday-anounces front left head light not working...this after I just get out of shower after ripping down Sanitas and washing walls down..gack... I go out, cram my 6' 6" frame under the steering wheel and open the fuse panel. check fuse-looks okay go to put BACK in, and fuse immediately finds nearest hole under dash to fall into. dissassemble 50% of left interior panels trying to retrieve fuse-successful. Find out then left bliker not working-check that fuse-blown. NO replacement fuses in VW--surprise. Ask neighbor for spare-got it and put in. Signal left blinker gives me buzzzzzzz sound. Pop trunk, pull light module to find-broken bulb. I'm telling you, what a pain in the butttocks...
    Other news...
    I've been asked to do some Flash work for guyfriend of youngest daughter's boyfriend...) starting up a vinyl decal business for cars, boats, cats, dogs....wherever you'd want to put a decal. In return for Flash services rendered (not THAt kind of Flash...) he's prepared to give Club members a 25% discount on stuff. I have NO idea what he's looking for as far as Flash is concerned, nor what his prices might be. i will report back with further info.

    Love that story! Why do dropped things always go INTO the smallest and most inaccessible places instead of bouncing cleanly up into your lap or on to the ground in plain view. Seems there'd be at least an equal chance. :)

    This is the second mod I did to my "M". The first was to remove the dealer decals and license plate frame. I used some silver touch-up paint that was left over from an older truck I had. I plan on painting the lines in gold. I don't have a digi-cam yet or I could post pictures. I think it looks much better. Kinda adds a little flash to an otherwise drab engine compartment. It wasn't too difficult. It only took about 30 minutes and the areas that don't look right can be scraped off with a knife and re-done.

    It helps if you have steady hands and good eyesight. Also do it it the daylight not in the garage.

    ..for the same reason that a piece of buttered bread will ALWAYS fall butter-side down on a rug; and a screw driver, when dropped will ALWAYS roll to the exact center under a car JUST out of reach of your fully-extended arm and hand. This is otherwise known as Murphy's Law.

    300Michael: Targét (the French prounciation: Tar-shay) finally got the blue neon 'wire' in, but I don't like the idea of supergluing the wire down..Any better ideas to afix the wire to surfaces?....

    Also tried to contact via email Wildcat Gil--message returned: no such user. I hope all is alright with him.

    I only worried about the paint softening the plastic intake runners from solvents and binders in the paint. I figured that if the heat affected the paint I could re-do it. Like I said, I just used some metal flake silver auto touch-up paint. So far after about a year it still looks the same. I don't think that solvents in the paint would eat through, it should only have surface effects (crazing, or dis-coloration). Anyway I didn't put a whole lot of research time into what the best paint would be. I just looked in my cabinet and pulled an old jar out. If Av is watching maybe he can chime in on whats best.

    So what did you do if you couldn't replace the screws? Were you able to reuse them even if they were stripped? Maybe I'll buy that Sears screw remover kit and try it with the engine totally cold. Thanks for the info.

    tnsc_300m is correct that the size of the PHG wheels changed from 16" to 17" mid-model-year 2000. I believe my 2000 PHG M was built in April of 2000, and it came with 17" razorstar wheels.

    I'm impressed! A lot of custom enclosures and covering work there, let alone the electronics. Just shows what can be done with no holds barred. (Of course, you need to give up your trunk to do this.) Wonder what it sounds like and why the hell is the owner of this M not on our board???

    Actually, Chrysler has been working on this for some time (don't think it's Microsoft related). I had read about it a year ago and read again a couple weeks ago that they will have something similar and will probably be the first manufacturer with this type of technology.

    That would be cool. Please post an link here if you come across it again. I would like to see a 3-d party systems available for different cars as well. Would be neat if chrysler provided existing customers with a kit, not just new cars.

    I've got one better; one summer at the cottage, getting ready to clean some fish, I was carrying the fish on a stringer along with a sharp filet knife, upside down in a plastic sheath. The knife slipped out, dropped to the deck, bounced on the handle back up 18 inches, turned 180º, landed and stuck upright in my big toe, (barefoot, of course)OW! That's gonna leave a mark.

    But; what will Murphy do if you butter a cat's back and drop it onto a carpet???

    I don't think it'll be a problem, they're made of plastic composite, which is unaffected by heat and most chemicals.

    I was able to get all the screws to sufficiently tighten and remain so. using the neandrethal method. tap torx socket into screw head with hammer,(ouch,do not use excessive force to do so) then tighten normally with socket. Aluminum heads + aluminum screws= soft metal when engine hot.
    I did a check later and was able to loosen the damaged screws using the same method, when engine cold.

    If you use the screw remover kit and "drill out" to remove damaged screw keep in mind you have to reinstall same screw unless you replace it. I doubt using that screw remover kit will allow you to reinstall same screw, but I'm guessing.

    I will eventually replace all the screws and those plastic spacer/keepers. But I'm not sure how the new spacers get properly crimped once over the screw threads. although that may not matter much.
    hold it. that spacer being crimped on to the screw shaft is probably to keep it from falling down into the head or elsewhere on the engine when changing the plugs, so I guess it would matter.

    The bigger issue to me was having to remove/bust off/cut off the old spacer to allow the damaged screw to slide out of the coilpack. The screws were $.35, I'm sure the plastic spacer/keepers are also an inexpensive item.
    I just wanted to get my 300M back on road ASAP.

    Ok...anyone want to estimate how many watts that thing is drawing? Looks like capacitors up on the trunk lid (original) and 2 big amps on either side. Anyone recognize the exact components? (I assume the alternator has been upgraded...and possibly aux. batt?)

    Ok, everyone with the dual exhaust similar to sdkmike and blonda, where did you get the parts? The Magnaflow collector, intermediate pipe, Dynomax muffler, and tips? Did you get them at the muffler place that installed the setup for you or did you get them from somewhere on the internet?

    My brother stopped by and he just finished installing duals on his Dodge Ram truck. It sounded and looked great and now I got the itch too.

    From wjat I can remember, sdmike2 used a Magnaflow 12258 as the collector and a DynoMax 17739 as the muffler. I think the "original" Michael Hujo design used a Rhino 921 as the muffler....but I think there was some debate about a growl or hum at a certain RPM with this design...

    I'm trying to find a custom muffler shop around here to do the work this summer. Even tho I have an LHS I should be able to use the basic ideas posted here....problably just need longer pipes.

    (HEY...I just thought of a real politically incorrect decal I could make...."LHS Owners Have Longer Pipes" )

    Yours actually does not look too bad ( I am not a decal fan myself). color match is pretty good.

    Several years ago I installed one of the first generation extra wood dash trim kits. I have seen newer installations and this is what I'm looking for:

    I'm looking for a vendor that has:

    - the overhead console trip piece
    - the piece between the map lights (next to the overhead console)
    - the 2 strips on each side of the radio/heater piece
    - the angled pieces on each front door
    - the "one-Piece" 3 hole center vent piece
    - the small pieces around the heated seats controls
    - the small pieces around the side-view mirror power control

    I have seen many layouts on eBay but none with all of these pieces. Any assistance would be appreciated!

    While washing my M today, I noticed a small puncture hole in the back seat armrest. I'm not sure how it got there. Maybe my 2 year old hit it with somthing. But in any case, has anyone used a good leather repair kit to fix small holes and things? Do these things actually work? I've seen the ones that include a bunch of color paint type stuff and a pad you put over it to create a texture. Are these things good or bad?

    Sounds like the Joshua Tree kit at www.woodtrim.com would come the closest. However, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the first two items...between map lights and the overhead console. Joshua Tree for sure has all of the others, plus a nice piece for the overhead console (my favorite piece). Their center vent piece doesn't cover the whole clock area, but rather just the three vents with a single piece. The only kit I found that covers the entire clock pod is the kit sold at Discount Dash and other places. However, the kit is only available in synthetic materials, which is a bummer if you hvae the luxury group. I have pictures of the Joshua Tree trim kit in the box and each of the parts I installed at http://www.ritchiefamily.com/300m.htm

    Even the best leather repair kit will leave a noticable mark, much UNLIKE the commercials you see on late night TV. If you want to keep it from tearing more and don't care that the color and texture is off a bit, one of the kits might be ok. Someone here posted a link earlier this week for a leather repair kit site.

    I told my muffler guy what I wanted and he got them for me. I think it was the same with Blonda. We used the stock intermediate pipe, and had exhaust pipes made by the muffler guy to run from the rear muffler to the cutouts. I know that Roger bought all of his parts and took them to Midas for the install, so you might want to check with him on where he got his stuff. I know he got his mandrel bent exhaust pipes (mandrel bending prevents corner restrictions) from JC Whitney, but I don't know where he got the mufflers. I believe he used the Rhino in back. Tom99, you are correct sir. Those are the parts I used. I have diagrams and pictures on my 300M web site (link posted just above). At one point I was looking for the parts on the web. If I have any place bookmarked I'll let you know.

    Just a note....the setup I used gives the car a mild growl, not very loud at all if you're into loud exhaust. If you want a little louder, go with the Rhino. If you want even louder, put a Flowmaster muffler on it.

    Nope glennbp, that isn't Big Red. I still have room for my golf clubs, a stroller, and a folding table (along with my duster and water blade). I'm perfectly happy with my Infinity II system and the basslink. Crisp, clear sound and plenty loud for me. :)

    I agree. But the point I was trying to make was that 16 inch chrome razorstars were avialable in 1999 & 2000 for the PHP. I felt that tnsc gave the impression that they came only with the silver wagon wheels.

    My 2000 PHP has the 16 inch razorstars, built on December 13, 1999 (I checked, that was a Mon. not a Fri.):<)

    My installation was handled by Muffler Masters in Statesville, NC. I don't know if Muffler Masters is a national chain, but there are several in my area. I would hope any shop that does a lot of custom work on pickup trucks, etc. should have suitable parts.

    They did not have the Magnaflow collector in stock, but had everything else we used. I kept the stock collector and intermediate pipe, but went with a Flowmaster for the back instead of the Dynomax. The Dynomax was in stock, as well. They had a pretty fair selection of tips and I went with chrome, slash cut duals. I am very satisfied with my system. The Flowmaster has no packing to burn out, so it will not get progressively louder with age.

    I had to do the cutting on my bumper cover for the right side exit, but it wasn't very hard if you make a good pattern from the left side.
