We just purchased a 2005 EX-L w/DVD from a Northeast Ohio dealer (Park Honda) for $31,285 out-the-door. I played the email game with four local dealers and they all got to invoice and wouldn't go below it. The dealer we went with got me the "pretty blue one." :-)

It depends what your credit rating is. Mine is 801 and I went with the 4.5% thru my credit union even though the dealer got down to 4.3%. I just wanted the ease of my car payment automatically coming out of my check.

This was my first time buying a new car and it was a relatively easy process. I went in to one local dealer first and found out about the van and test drove it. I tried to deal with them, but they kept wanting to talk with my husband instead of me. They wouldn't come down in price at all, but threw in 10 free oil changes. I left, went home, got online, contacted three other dealers, and let them all try to get under the other. I called the original dealer back with the lowest price I had gotten. He didn't have much to say because the night before he tried to convince me that he absolutely could not lower the price.

I thought the dealer I dealt with was very fair. They originally said they couldn't get the car until the 2nd week in August. He kept checking on it and asking for it and we ended up picking it up July 28th (just in time to take on our trip to Kings Island). I would definitely buy from them again.

I felt like I got a pretty decent price. I sold my 2000 Honda on my own in one day and got a better price than if I had traded it in. Everything was very smooth and I love the new van!!!

Have a quote for 2006 EX-L at $28,258 - Dealer claims this is the invoice for 2006. I can get a package with 10 year rust / carpet / paint proof warranty (no deductible replacement) along with the EX-L for $28,575 + taxes + fees. Is this a good deal? Should I go for it?
  • magnhildmagnhild Member Posts: 2
    Hello Coolguy,

Could you advise the dealer you received this quote from? I am in MN and this is proportionately better than the offer I just received on an 06 EXL - RES, also is there a name to the package you're looking at? I was told today that "All Honda's come undercoated from the factory. 5 year unlimited rust warranty standard, no extra cost." by a dealer today so we also are contemplating this issue... Thanks.

    Mich,

You're the only one I've seen that beat my price ($31,9xx) for an EXL RES NAV. Nice work! I got mine a few weeks ago and we're loving it, but still having an issue with the power sliding door. Otherwise great.
  • soz05odysoz05ody Member Posts: 12
You cracked me up. Thankfully my 23 month old will still get into the 2003 Accord. His new favorite activity is shouting "Door Open" and waving his arm to make the sliding door "magically" open.

Ok, I know it's off topic, but I couldn't resist.

I have received a quote of $30,199 for an 2005 hONDA oDYSSEY EXL with Rear DVD System. I live in Pennsylvania and the dealership seems to be very easy to dael with. The sales rep was extremey friendly and helpful. Can someone tell me similare price quotes they have received. Let me know. Thanks

Me and my husband yet had another bad experience with a Honda dealer near NY City in NJ. We negotiated the price on Tuesday with the 1st salesmen over the phone, but she said they didn't have the color I wanted, but would locate one, and insisted that we gave her a depost of $500 through our credit card first, and then she would fax us the "order sheet" immediately afterwards. We didn't want to do that initially, but then they called back after a few hours and said that they got the car and told us that we can pick it up this Saturday the latest, so we gave them our credit card to put down the deposit for the car on Wednesday. However, "retail buyer's order" was prepared and faxed to us by a 2nd salesmen on Wednesday night, and he gave us a different price. We called him back and he argued and faught with us on the price, he also said that he wasn't sure that they could even locate the car in the color we wanted anymore.

So we called the 1st salesperson, and told her what the 2nd salesmen said and that the deal was off. She insisted that there was some miscommunication between her and the 2nd salesmen and that they would still give us the price we originally agreed and that they just found out the 1st car they located was not available anymore, but they definetely could still locate another car we wanted, just that we needed to signed the "buyer's order" first. We woudn't trust them anymore and we wouldn't sign it without a Vin number on the order, but she and the 2nd salesmen both insisted that we had to sign it immediately that night or they wouldn't be able to start the process and get the VIN number of the car.

By now, we saw a pattern here, everytime we spoke to the female salesmen, everything seemed to be cool, they could do the price and the color, and the 2nd salesmen would call to do the paper work, and then everything was changed.
At this point, we didn't want to sign anything and didn't want to go through this deal anymore, so when the 2nd salesmen told us yet another story, we told him the deal was off and hung up. He kept calling back continuously on both home phone and my husband's cell, as we didn't want to answer, when my husband finally answered, he yelled "you won't get your deposit back!"and hung up. At that time, we were prepared to dispute the charge as soon as it becomes official.

However, they didn't give up, they had their "good" salesmen - sales manager and the 1st femal salemen, keep calling on our home phone and my husband's cell phone and emailing Thursday, and pretended nothing had ever happened and that we were still going through the buying process. We didn't pick up the calls, so they left us the VIN number in the phone message, and said they had the car ready to be picked up (last time they told us this too, and then we're told later they didn't have the car).

They are still calling continuously today (Friday), I finally responded them an e-mail and told them that they should talk to the 2nd salesmen and that when he told us another story on Wednesday night, we canceled the deal.

Anyway, the bottom line is we don't want to buy a car through them anymore, we just don't want to deal with them anymore, they played games and didn't honor their words, they go back and forth playing "good cops and bad cops" game. We are simply disgusted on this whole process.

I just want to reassure that we're not obligated on anything because we didn't sign anything, we gave them our credit card to put down a desposit but they failed to fax us a "buyer's order" with the price they promised.

Please help and comment. Thank you.

How far do you live away from Pennsylvania? The dealership I am purchasing from is very easy to work with and customer oriented!!!
  • aliyaliy Member Posts: 14
Thank you for your response. I was getting invoice prices for an EXL from several dealers in NJ, some near my house, but they didn't have the color I want. I may reconsider Toyota Sienna as I got a reasonable price quote and the salemen near my house has been very patient, but I'm not completely sure yet. I think we still prefer Odyssey, but I've just noticed that the Toyota dealers I have dealt with so far have been much more professional about it. I may also consider a 2006 EXL instead.
  • sorexcusesorexcuse Member Posts: 7
That sounds like an OK deal. I'm in central NY and have gotten quotes for right about that price for an 06 EX-L RES. If I were you I'd look into the 06, if for nothing else than to get the better warranty.

Norm Reeves Honda Superstore at Cerritos. I bought the EX model which they had plenty in stock.
  • shermikeshermike Member Posts: 5
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Honda, I have been a Honda owner for 10 years and would not choose to purchasse anything but... This Odyssey purchase will be my third van. What color were you looking for as my local dealership had a few EX-L'S? Good Luck
  • twins2twins2 Member Posts: 16
Sorry to hear about your experience. I think mine is equally bad. Clair Honda in Massachussetts. We negotiated for a 2005 Odyssey EX-L with NAV/RES in Sage Brush Pearl ($31,364 +tax, title and registration)and put down a $1000 deposit on July 10th. We were promised it would be there in two weeks and our sales rep knew how important it was to us to have the car before August. 1 week later I get an email that they have the VIN number and the car will be there soon. A few days later another email that it will arrive between 7/27 an 8/2 at the latest. Again we had emphasized we needed the minivan before early August (my wife delivered twins on 8/3). On 8/1 I get a call, no car, would we take another color. After much complaining and reminding them we had bought an audi from Clair Audi a few years ago and we were referred by a friend who worked at Clair Toyota, they promised we'd get the Ody between 8/12 and 8/18. On 8/12 the call comes, sorry, the other dealer with your car reneged. How about a 2006 in late september in silver? After all that, they couldn't get even the color right! We're getting our deposit back, sending a letter to the head of Clair Honda and Clair motors, the BBB, and Honda. I would definitely make a stink and send letters, email, and let them know they blew it with you (as Clair has done with us)

I've only driven Hondas. First a civic, then a 98 accord. If this is how Honda and its dealers treat loyal customers, count me out. HONDA beware, you make good cars but treat your customers poorly

Anyone from Honda or a nearby dealer in MA feel free to try to restore my faith in HONDA.....
  • twins2twins2 Member Posts: 16
You can also complain to your credit card company. They will probably credit the amount and deal with the dishonest dealer. after all, you never got the car....also sometimes local media have reporters who will help

put down a $1000 deposit on July 10th. We were promised it would be there in two weeks and our sales rep knew how important it was to us to have the car before August. 1 week later I get an email that they have the VIN number and the car will be there soon

First, sorry to hear about all the bad buying experiences with some of the dealerships. It looks like a lot of people are now putting down deposits on future delivery of their Odysseys. I did the same thing with mine few weeks back, so I want to share some things I observed during the process. Again, these are based on my observations, so if anyone who works for Honda or a Honda dealership and knows I'm wrong, please post (we all would want to have better buying experiences!).

    1. The VIN is known ahead of time and Honda probably has assigned the vehicle its VIN even before it hits the assembly line.

    2. When the dealerships orders X number of Odysseys for delivery from Honda, the VINs are provided. So, the dealer already knows the trim, color, VIN, and expected delivery date way ahead of time.

    3. There is a master database of all Odysseys (including info on color, VIN, trim, etc.) that every Honda dealership can view. This allows them to see which dealerships have which cars, colors on the lot... and probably which ones have already been sold.

I observed points 1 and 2 when I went to test drive and look at the Odyssey. The dealership didn't have a Silver EX on the lot when I was there, but told me they had one on order for 8/8 delivery and I could put a deposit on it. Once I did put a deposit on it, they pulled up their spreadsheet gave me the VIN. The car came in 1 week early and when I took delivery the VIN matched. Also, my Odyssey was built (or assembly started) on 7/15. You can find this info under the 2 row captains chairs. There's a sticker underneath each seat with a date, and from what I hear that's the build (or assembly start) date.

I observed point 3 during the period I was waiting to take delivery. Another Honda dealership sent a follow up email, and I told them that the first Honda dealership offered me a silver EX for invoice. They replied to my email the next day and said they looked things up and the 1st Honda dealership didn't have any silver EXs in stock, but had a couple on delivery but both were already pre-sold. I told them they were correct, the 1st Honda dealership was out of stock, had a couple on the way, and they I was one of the people who put a deposit on one them.

So, before you put a deposit down on anything, get the VIN.

Slate green is our best choices. Ocean mist was our 2nd choice. Are those the most popular colors? We picked those colors because we've owns cars of the other colors, and we don't like black, silver.
  • aliyaliy Member Posts: 14
yeah, we're disputing the charge. Actually, we informed the credit card company about this incoming charge and attempted to stop it, but the credit card company said that they can't stop the charge once the credit information was given out. They can only help us to get the money back after we dispute the charge, which had to become official first.
  • aliyaliy Member Posts: 14
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. It must be very frustrating for you to wait so long and still get jerked around. I wouldn't mind send an e-mail to make a complaint to Honda corporation about how many of their loyal customers have so much hard time buying cars from their dealers. But, I don't know if that would help at all.

Pringles, you wrote that you are buying an Odyssey from a dealer in Southgate, MI at $611 over invoice. I am also going to be ordering the same model as you. What was the bottom line price you paid? I will be going to that dealership next week and would love to take some copies of these emails and get the same deal as yourself.

    Thanks!

In the past couple of days (mostly today), we have negotiated with 5 dealers for the 2005 EX-L, and the best OTD price we have been quoted was $30,550. Taxes are only 6% here, approx. $1750, so backing everything but destination out we are at $28,650 or so (~700 over invoice). We have physically walked out of 4 local dealers at about the same price point, most of them having the "good luck finding a better deal" attitude as we walked out.

It's really annoying, but most of the local dealers have sticker prices ~800 above MSRP because of their "add-ons" (mud-flaps, etc. - whatever). Also, most of them have crazy doc/etc. fees of $400-$500, and some try to add $200 theft protection of some sort. I don't care what they call any of it, I just want to negotiate OTD price.

We want the vehicle, but we don't feel very good about that price. Local dealers are running out of '05's (some have 0 left, only '06's), but IMO if there is 1 left on their lot that is 1 too many.

Any opinions or advice? I don't want to, but we might have to consider the Toyota Siena.

I've been looking in NE Wisconsin primarily for an EX-L or Touring with both NAV and RES, but the best quote I've gotten so far is 1300 over invoice (and that was for a 2005). I don't know if you bought yet or not, but I suspect at invoice in Wisconsin is a great deal. If you don't mind, I'd love to know the dealership you got that quote from.
  • orringtonorrington Member Posts: 3
Looking in Illinois, best I've seen is $30,290 on an 06 EXL. Does your dealer have the car in stock? Skip the package. Who is the dealer?
  • stilllookingstilllooking Member Posts: 6
I was going to get Odyssey EXL with NAV from Autowest Honda. I was quoted $31150 for EXL with RES before tax and licenses. I was hoping to bring the price down a little bit even though Livermore Honda quote me $30092 for the same model. Livermore is about one hour drive from Fremont and my wife did not want to drive too far because we have a 4 year old with us. After I told the sales guy about Livermore Honda's quote, he was a little annoyed/upset and refused to let me test drive his van. I did not bother to argue with him and I told my wife to drive across the street and get a Sienna instead. I know I could have save some money by going with Honda, but I felt offended and could not stand the arrogance of this Honda saleman.
  • orringtonorrington Member Posts: 3
Any idea why the Sienna is more?
  • stilllookingstilllooking Member Posts: 6
I paid $35000 OTD for XLE package 7 with spoiler. I think Honda EXL with RES costs less than that.

New Poster Here....I'm just about to buy a new 2005 Touring w. Nav+DVD. The price I'm getting is $36,800? This does not include some of the options I'd like to add (3rd row shades, MP3, etc). How does this price sound. Please advise. I'm also considering the Sienna XLE Limited w/ Nav+DVD. I haven't negotiated this car yet. Any info on this will also be helpful.

    Thank You!!
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
How good the price is wholly depends on your local market, whether for an Odyssey or a Sienna. Around here (Ohio), such a price wouldn't be very good (I paid invoice for a Touring R&N six months ago) but it seems we are blessed with the hottest price competition in the country. Siennas seem to be cheapest in the Washington DC area.

If you are comparing '05 models, the Odyssey beats the Sienna hands down on the R&N features. The '06 Sienna DVD system has been improved
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Well, by now, you should be coming to grips with the reality of the market.

If you have walked out of four stores there is a reason...they don't want to sell their Odysseys for less than the next person will be happy to pay!

No different with houses or anything else. Cars sell for what the current market is.

If you do consider a Sienna you will run into the same thing!

Regrettably, that seems to be the case. I guess it comes down to how much we want the vehicle at this point.

Our top 2 "contenders" are $100 apart in price. The more expensive one has 300 miles on it (it was a dealer transfer), but it is the exact color we want and it has mud guards, pinstripe (don't care about this), and some teflon coating that dealer does. The cheaper one is our third color choice, with no dealer add-ons. How much are mud guards worth (I'm sure it's been asked before, so I'll try a little harder to find it on my own)? We're thinking of taking the lower offer if they add mud guards. That dealer is trying to find the color we want in a transfer, but I'm not counting on it.

This past week I began looking at the Honda Odyssey EX-L RES. What a great vehicle! I thought the best deal would be to obtain a 2005 model. One of the local dealers informed me there was only approximately 50 2005 cars remaining in the state of Florida, and that it would be very hard to get one. Well, after talking with 3 dealerships I was able to secure a 2005 EX-L RES for $32,400 out the door for the one (and only one) they have left on the lot.

The problem was the dealer wasn't very nice/flexible as I expected. So I said "no thanks" and walked out to think about it. I went across the street and called the Honda dealer closest to my house. I asked for the manager and informed him I am outside another Honda dealer and getting ready to do a deal in 20 minutes, but was not that thrilled with their manager and his willingness to reach an agreement. I gave them 20 minutes to see if they could do better than the current offer.

20 minutes later they called back and informed me they could not secure a 2005 model for that price. However, they would get me into the 2006 model (EX-L RES) for $31,998 OUT THE DOOR.

I drove to my local dealer to do the deal and they treated me wonderful. We put everything in writing and had my wife pick the color. I think they took pleasure in taking business away from a competing store. Now we are playing the waiting game for the vehicle to arrive.

My local dealership did a great job for us. I hope to see my car in a couple weeks. Due to the high demand for these cars, it will be interesting to see just how long it will take.

If anyone was able to beat $31.9k out the door (including tags), I would like to hear details. :)

It is a dealership in Reading, PA- Piazza Honda. , they have other dealerships, too but we were previous customers and have most delighted with thsi one. Sorry, cannot provide phone number b/c thios site does not allow that.

It does no good at all to talk about "out the door" pricing in these forums.

Sales tax can vary WIDELY between states and counties and license fees can as well. Much better to stick with the price of the car itself.

I just received an internet quote on my request for 2006 EXL. They said they had one in stock. I'm wondering if they're talking about a 2005. Anyone know if/when the 2006's are due in. It was for 29,400 plus ttf. Ok price for 2006? or not?

Some dealerships are getting them... a couple have told me they won't get them for weeks (though I suspect they're just trying to push their last 2005s).

I'm looking at the same car in NC and that's about the best price I've seen so far, but I've only just started and haven't gotten my online quotes back.

It's about $1000-$1400 over what a comparable 2005 has gone for down here (selling basically at invoice ++), but that may not be unreasonable considering the longer warranty and the better resale value of the extra model year on the back end when selling.

Who were you using for your online quote?
  • looking4exllooking4exl Member Posts: 11
The honda website. I sent emails for quotes to all the dealers in our area.

I'm a newbie and live in the Baltimore area. I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure out a good price for the 2006. Can you help? I have been all around robin's barn researching and feel inundated with info and numbers.

I have come across $31,895 and 31,721 before Taxes and all that jazz. Someone told me to go by the rule of 4-5% above invoice to get a fair price. What do you think? Any suggestions for a newbie? I'm going from a gas hog SUV to a minivan, this is big change for me and I want to make the right choice. Tanks bunches! :shades:

I am a resident of Massachusetts live in the Newton area , well started looking for the Van on Sunday this past week , Looks like Dealers were in rush toget rid of the 2005s,
and the GM & ford Discounts have affected the Hondas and Toyotas , well good for the buyer, i talked to this Honda dealer near by he was willing to give the EXL -RES for $29,525 after a lot of haggling . But i wanted the NAV too so i tried another dealer couple of towns over and got the(Slate ) EXL-RES NAV for 31.500(incl dest). before Taxes,
There still are more 2005 Hondas maybe for couple of weeks , best time to make a kill (maybe not with alot of color choices).
    Very nice cars.
best of luck happy hunting :shades:

I saw the '05 touring with RES/NAV today. The dealer is giving the car for 35,500 plus tax, tag, title. He would not tell me any of the differences between the '05 and '06. Does anyone know the specifics? Should I wait for the '06?
  • twins2twins2 Member Posts: 16
Normally, it wouldn't aggravate me so much. But now with the twins and no minivan and having to start the process all over for a 2006 (they are not budging much from the retail price around here). I may just get the Sienna, but I do like the Ody better. I don't think Honda is going to make many changes unless enough people complain and their sales start to decrease......good luck to you as well...
  • chiefcounselchiefcounsel Member Posts: 3
Well--I waited until I placed my order to let you in on a secret to get an Odyssey for $99 over invoice!

You must be saying what is the catch--the dealers all laugh when I offer anything close to invoice. Well--the odyclub has the deal and it is free--you just have to register (free) and then accept the offer. odyclub.com is sponsored by a car dealer in Illinois. They have offered to sell odysseys for $99 over invoice to anyone who pre-orders an odyssey by Sept 3rd 2005 and puts down $500 (nonrefundable). You say unbelievable--well I did it because many others have too--I live in Washington DC and will pay $54 to fly Independence Air from Dulles to Chicago and it will cost about $100 in expensive fuel to get home so I will be at about $250 over invoice on an EX and I get to choose the color and options. The key is that you have to be an Odyclub member (membership is free and you just register).

If you think I am lying you can visit the forum and read the many experiences people have had buying from this dealer--you can also read the offers made in the past.

Good Luck--I hope you choose a quick and painless way to get an odyssey (it is too good a deal especially when you choose the options and colors and preorder without dealer add ons and having someone sell your Odyssey to another or try to upsell you or offer you ripoff financing)

I was disgusted by the arrogant dealers who simply said "have a nice flight" when I told them they could match the offer and get an instant customer or I could simply accept an offer elsewhere.

I was also tired of having dealers ask me to call them when I tried to set up an internet deal--I think they wanted to bait and switch or play bad cop good cop or simply tell me orally what I wanted to hear so I would come waste time with them and then they could renege and I wouldn't have any proof of anything being represented.
