We bought a '99 Ody EX GG three weeks ago from a dealer. Had 22K and in very good shape, just a few scuffs on the interior from prior owner hauling stuff. We paid $22,700. They were asking $23,900. We found the exact van with 37k being sold by an individual asking $22,900. We opted for the dealers van because of the milage and it was in better shape. We also purchased an extended warranty.

I live in Atl also and am wondering who quoted you the best price for an Odyssey? We are in the midst of looking for one and I have been calling a couple of dealerships every few days to see what they can quote me. I appreciate any help you can give with this. Thanks
  • patel68patel68 Member Posts: 16
Thank you both for your posts. I found dealers outside the S.F. Bay Area were more willing to sell this car at MSRP and were also more apologetic for not having one in stock, similar to subbi's experience. I also am considering Liquidprice or one of the other services, but my wife asked me to let her try. She thinks direct negotiation will work best as others have posted here.

bjk2001 keep trying the services down south and I may try the same up here. Raybear works for one of them but I want to check it out first to make sure it's not one of those advertising sites the dealers pay a fee to. Those have been a waste of time.

This is really funny or strange I should say. I read two posts regarding a good deal @ valleyhi.com. I typed in the Web URL and its a dealer @ Victorville which is about 72 miles from my house according to yahoo maps. They have a fleet/internet department. I am still debating whether to contact them or not. And guess what I saw in the company parking today. After a days work, I was walking toward my car and saw 2 white Odyssey EX parked side by side. One of them is a brand spanking new which still has yellow dealer's name on the license plate. It says "Valley-Hi". I think I am going to send them a "quote request" tomorrow.
On the 2nd thoought, I chatted with wife today briefly regarding the Odyssey price over MSRP. Toyota Sienna looks more attractive now. *LOL*

Good luck for your Odyssey hunting.

tried to post a response at least 3 times and none came up.this one probably will, though. LOL
  • skyboltskybolt Member Posts: 10
Which direction from Victorvile do you live? Indio is 110 miles from Victorville by yahoo maps, and if you are in that direction, it may be closer. If so, call Jesse Gamez @ www.unicarshonda.com

He does MSRP and if you negotiate for options you can get those for less than MSRP.

Plus, there is a Toyota dealer right next door for close comparisons which should clarify things when you can see them almost side-by-side. (grin)

If you really want the details, I could look it up and write you a note... but I did NOT buy the Ody in Dec. 2000. I had the quotes, from a dealer in Alabama (near the GA border, perhaps in Auburn, AL?).
I would suggest writing an email to dealers in small towns (like Gainesville, GA etc.) and ask them for a firm price. I also told them I wanted a FIRM DRIVE OUT PRICE - with NO DEALER ADD-ON's. You will be surprised how many people write back. If time is on your side, you can even do some price matching negotiations!
    Good Luck.

My wife had a frustrating day trying to find the Odyssey. One of the dealers who quoted us MSRP had a car come in, but after she arrived they told her another customer was interested in the car and was willing to pay more money. They hinted that she could try to outbid them but she walked out instead.

I have a request for a quote from one of the internet companies now. I have to wait two days to see what we can find.

Seems like I read somewhere on this site a while back that Honda is building a new facility in the US that should double Odyssey production to 240,000. Anybody know the status of that facility - like when it's scheduled to start production?
  • inkyinky Member Posts: 370
This factory is set for 2003 prodcution. Do not hold your breath. Honda is way too slow. I predict 5 speed auto for ODyssey then. Honda will make Honda version of MDX, MDX and Odyssey in ratios that meet demand. Current total production of both is 120,000 per year. Another 120,000 should do it. Man is Honda slow or what.

I missed the ramp up from 60k to 120k units on the Odyssey. How long ago did this happen? Thanks.

I just paid MSRP for EX in Indiana. Straight deal, no hidden or extra cost. The dealer has incoming vans sold about 30 days before arriving. E-mail if you would like dealer info.

Thats why I plan to get rid of my ody by next year so I can take advantage of the great resale value of it even though I like it, the interior is so boring and unlavishing but the thing that got me is the navigation system and the excellent reliability of Honda cars.

    Hi Pjshaff,

I live in Atlanta and talked with all the Atlanta metro dealers and the dealers in surrounding areas including Gainesville. All of these dealers were adding the apperance protection package for about $900 (additional dealer mark-up).

Puchased my 01 SS EX from Alton Blakley in Sommerset, Ky at $1000 below MSRP ($25,840) with no unwanted dealer add-ons. They threw in mud-guards for free. We puchased on 1/13/01. Others who have contacted say that Blakley is now selling for $500 below MSRP. It is about a 350 miles drive from Atlanta. Saving $2000 was well worth a day's drive for us.

I purchased my Odyssey EX at MSRP from Rosenthal Honda in Tysons Corner, VA. I knew that I was willing to pay only MSRP with no additional options (I had no trade-in). Most dealers did not have any Odyssey's; so I went to Rosenthal (not known to have the best reputation).

I simply walked in and told them I would pay MSRP. They laughed, so I walked out and went to drive away (I figured the chances were 50/50 that they would come and get me). They actually let me start driving before the sales manager came out of the dealership and stood in front of my car and said $500 over MSRP. I said no. He said that I was crazy and good luck... I would never get that price.

So I rolled my window up, and started driving; then they sent a salesman out in the shuttle van to come and get me as I drove off. I drove back to the dealership and they agreed on MSRP with no options. They gave me the VIN # and I waited two weeks for the van. BTW, my wife loves the van.

The whole process of purchasing the van took less than 15 minutes. Why hassle with a long time negotiating... just offer list (or your price), and if they don't like it just walk out. That's the quickest way to know whether they will do MSRP. Which most will.

    Good luck everyone!

Hi. I just got my GG EX-for the internet price of 26,840 (thought this was MSRP but it is that plus destination charge that I was told I didn't have). I had a cassette deck installed. When the ext. Honda Care Warranty was offered-the mgr. said it was $900 which is what I had seen in you r other posts. Well, when I went to sign the paper, It is for 6 years and 100k miles with a $50 deductible. Should I have held out for something better? Who has ordered the 7/100/no deduct. warranty from another dealer and got it? How did that work? I can cancel if I can get something better. Thanks for your help. BTW I loved the new Ody. Somehow, though, I got in and locked the vehicle while I was buckling my daughter into her carseat, then sat in my seat and started the ignition and the alarm went off. What did I do wrong?

Sorry to hear what happened to your wife's Odyssey hunting. I was so busy at work this week. Didn't have chance to send it and request. But I did get a quote last week for an EX @ MSRP+ $1000 same price as 1 month ago, but different color. Anyway I am still shopping around. 4/15 is coming, have to take care my Uncle Sam and Uncle Grey Davis first. Got a message regarding a dealer in Indio who will do MSRP, but Indio is going the other direction from me. Anyway, keep my option open. Looking at 2002 Ford Explore XLT with 3rd row seats, too. I got a $400.- owner loyalty certificate from Ford. Well good luck to you!
Happy Easter. Hope Good Friday bring you some good luck.

Contact Tracy of Alton Blakley Honda in Somerset, KY at (800)264-3275 or tdabh@yahoo.com. The cost for the 7/100,000/0 is $875. I asked her to send me the HCW application form a few days ago. Also you can check www.honda-odyssey.com/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000001.html for some information. Happy riding !

The mileage is at 39,000+ and therefore you cannot buy the Hodacare Extended warranty now. Cutoff mileage is 36,000. Any warranty will have to come from a third party (aftermarket) warranty company.

My understanding is that the new Alabama plant will come "on-line" in the spring of 2002. However, while it will make Odys, production is to be about 120,000 per year. This is more than Canada was making for USA consumption, so there will be an increase in availability of USA units, but nothing like what would happen if both plants cranked out Odysseys.

The Canadian plant will reduce Ody production by eliminating those made for the USA. The Canadian plant will make Odys for the Canadian and non-USA market. The remaining capacity of Canada is supposed to be dedicated to a car line.

    Good Morning,

I am interested in buying a 2001 Odyssey. In the beginning of the notes page I see that people are/were? paying MSRP plus extra.

The dealerships I have called have these vans on the lot in the color I am looking for. Two questions. First, shouldn't we the consumers be paying a price somewhere between Invoice and MSRP--and not MORE than MSRP?

Second, when I compare the Odyssey with other vans in Edmunds, it is the only van that has a TV HIGHER than the MSRP?

I have been living in Greece for the past 10 months--am I missing something about this van??

    please help!! :)

Yes - the Honda Odyssey is currently one of the hottest vehicles out there. Honda set the new standard in minivans when they introduced it in 1999.

Most parts of the country are selling at MSRP. Bay Area of CA seems to still be over MSRP. Parts of Ohio and Kentucky seem to be under MSRP. If a dealer has one unsold - they know it will be sold very quickly. Call around to dealers to find out their price, if any add ons (ie dealer options required), and the wait time. Then go with the one you feel best about.

Edmunds' TMV is over MSRP. I wouldn't venture an offer much below it if I was serious. I see a few sold at MSRP and most just a bit over. Most Bay Area customers need to consider a trip south to get a "deal" at or near the sticker price.

Almost bought a Sienna but Engine sludge made me switch to Odyssey. After reading Townhall, on April 11, I found a dealer in Lafayette, Louisiana who had the Beige LX my wife wanted on the lot for $440 under MSRP. He provided 5 out of town references, all of whom gave solid recommendations of Danny Roberts, the Ragin Cajun at Moss Motors. I interrogated Danny carefully. Danny was very upfront. He said 115 miles on the Odometer, never been titled. (He was wrong. It read 110 miles when I first got in it.) Price $23,900 + TTL. Via e-mail he quickly informed me there was a $49 document fee, but THAT WAS IT! No games, nothing else added. He could add options if I wanted, but there was nothing else on it, and that was just the way I wanted it. The best I could get San Antonio dealers to counter when I presented this deal was MSRP, 1 year free car washes, 3 years Roadside Assistance thrown in and 4 week wait. So I booked a $170 flight from SA to Lafayette on April 13. Danny picked me up at the airport, a mile from the dealership. I gave the car a thorough inspection. I found a couple of VERY MINOR indentations where someone had slammed the trunk door too hard. (You had to strain REAL hard to see them.) They didn't question me. They said we can do a paintless dent repair in a couple of hours, or we will reimburse your repair in San Antonio. I chose the latter. Signed the paperwork. Danny said "Thanks, that takes care of everything." I said "You forgot to collect the check from me." So I wrote it out for $23,949.00, exactly as he had stated. (Being from out of state, I get to handle TTL myself.)

Only two complaints. He slapped a Moss Motors sticker on the back when I wasn't looking. It was supposed to come with a FULL tank of gas, but I topped it off with $6 of gas before leaving Lafayette.

I got 25.0 miles per gallon doing 70 mph down Interstate 10, a/c running, regular unleaded gas. No unusual sounds. Smooth ride straight down the road. Wife loves it. So do I.

Tell Danny that Tommy Lew sent you.

I live in the Bay Area and was not going to pay the huge uplift over MSRP at the local dealers. A few were still asking $2,000 +, but I think they are willing to come down now. Anyway someone on this board suggested calling Jesse De La Cruz at Stockton Honda and I did. After a little haggling we got a great price. I told him I would not post the actual price I paid, but I know none of the other dealers in the bay area could match it. I called around and they all said the equivalent to "Well, if Stockton Honda doesn't honor that price, give us a call and we will try and give you a good deal." Anyway when I got there there were no games (I drove 2 hrs to get it). I was expecting some funny business, but there was none. I recommend giving him a call for those Bay Area Odyssey hunters. The drive was worth the savings. We got an Emerald Green EX with no Nav.

Canada plant can produce 120,000 units per year or 10,000 units per month. I belive Odyssey gets about 6-7k while Acura gets 3-3.5k units per month. Too bad they could sell twice that many.

Unlike most buyers who put up the $500 deposit and wait to be called when the ship docks, the Odyssey EX was waiting for me!

My dealer got an "extra" allotment of five Odysseys after he sold the initial 18 within 1-1/2 days after landing. They're still getting at least 2K over MSRP (used to be 3-4K in the beginning). The other two also got extras, but the color choices varied. Went over on 4/01 to check on the choices and picked Granite Green after the test drive. Put down my $500 refundable deposit.

Closed the deal on 4/14 for MSRP ($26,840) + TTL. Asked for and added a few trim items + extended warranty of 6 yrs./100K for $895. I'm in the insurance business and this was better (price and benefits) than other comparable plans I checked out before-hand: zero deduct + extra services. The dealer made some extra $$$ on the trim items, but so what? They're in business and didn't waste my time. Less than ten minutes in F&I signing documents and giving them the check. BTW, the car still had only 20 miles on the odometer, possibly five more after I put the deposit down.

We're surrounded by the big, blue Pacific, so there's no driving over the state-line to find a "better" deal elsewhere. Our tax is around 4.17% (actually a 4% excise tax on businesses, not a true sales tax, so businesses pay tax on the tax). What is it in California, 8%?. If we try the Oregon manuever, Hawaii assesses our rate upon landing unless we can prove it's a USED car! My experience is that two of the dealers here would have priced me at MSRP, the other would have tried for $1K ADM (hey, that's $1.5K less than their usual on this vehicle) before relenting.
I went this one because of past dealings and the availability of exactly what I was looking for.

BOTTOM LINE: I'm happy and satisfied ..... and not with just the price!

I bought '01 Mesa Beige EX 3/29/01 in Atlanta for MSRP plus Doc, TT. I sent an mail to every dealer in Atlanta at the same time and told them that they were competing with each other to sell the Ody at MSRP- No Add on's. They all tried to "sell" the added items but eventually three dealers came around. The difference was the doc fees. I went with the one that was less. Originally no one had the Beige but within a matter of two days all three dealers called me with one "still on the truck." Overall we are pleased. Just need to get the hitch and ATF Cooler (any suggestions?) to tow my pop-up.

Thought I'd send an update about my potential purchase to date.
Heard from my dealer here in Cincinnati Weds. that my GG EX is on the truck and will be in by Friday. They asked me about options, negotiated good price for roof crossbars and Hondacare, gave a little on the cassette player. They threw in the cargo tray. I'll get the mud flaps, nose deflector, and wheel locks from the web. Here are my line item prices:
    GG EX $750 under MSRP = $26,090
    Cassette player = $ 229
    Cargo Tray = $ free
    Cross Bars = $ 79
    HondaCare 7/100/$0 ded. = $ 900
    Document fee = $ 50
    Title = $ 10
    Temp Tags = $ 10
    Tax -Ohio(6%) = $ 1,641
    Loan app fee (6.84%/60mo)= $ 125

I plan on picking it up on Monday. Got my checklist and will report on the pickup experience.

Am in the market for a Honda Odessy and all local dealers (NY area) want MSRP + $1000 - 2000 with an unknown delivery date.

I have been in contact with Canadian dealers who tell me that they cannot sell to Americans. Using a car broker is the suggested way.

The cost saving seems to be US$4000-5000 when compared to paying US list and even more if you pay MSRP+. (Using a US EX at US$26,840 vs. a Canadian EX at US$21,840 with exchange rate of 1.58)

I have identified 2 problems. First the new car warranty is not valid in the US. Secondly, the odometer and speedometer are calibrated in Kilometers not Miles. Buying a HondaCare (7 yr/ 100k mile) warranty may be the solution to the first problem. There are shops which specialize in converting speedometers/odometers, but as yet do not know the cost.

Does anyone know of any other drawbacks or the warranty question? All advice/experiences appreciated.

    JerseyGuy,

Friendly honda in upstate NY, near Poughkeepsie (1.5 hrs from Manhattan), is taking orders at MSRP on Odysseys. They wanted a $100USD refundable deposit and 4 month wait. No forced dealer options. No chance of going below MSRP. This was in early March.

    http://www.friendly-honda.com/

I ended up buying a T&C, but this dealership was pleasant both times I went there.

There may be a problem registering a car from another country in the US. If there is the slightest difference in emission control systems, safety systems, crash test results, bumper height, headlight specs, the car might need to be converted. I think these are more issues if you want to bring a car from Eurpoe or Asia, but you should double-check.

  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
I don't think you will be able to buy a HondaCare warranty for a Canadian Ody. If you are willing to go through all this trouble, read back about 200 posts here and in the general Ody topic and find dealers there in the Ohio, Illionois area who are selling from inventory and under MSRP. Then get yourself a SWA ticket out of Islip and drive it back.

Buy the time you pay a broker, buy a 2rd party warranty, pay to change out the speedo - is it worth it??

Also, changing out the odo/speedo presents problems at resale time - legally you have to claim mileage unknown. That hurts resale tremendously.

I have just purchased a 2001 Ody and I would like to compare the price I paid for it. It is an LX with keyless entry/alarm,6 stacker cd,trailer-hitch,floomats,mudflaps.Total price including dealer add ons $32000.00 plus taxes. Is there any Canadians out there that would like to share their prices paid?
  • acsmithacsmith Member Posts: 63
American Honda dealers are not allowed to sell the Hondacare Warranty on Canadian vans. And even if you "buy" it, Honda of America will not issue the warranty paperwork to you. You'll have to buy a third party "after-market" warranty.
The other problem is the speedometer. You can leave it alone and run kilometers as long as you have it, or you can change it out for one in miles. If you change it out, you'll have to certify "mileage unknown" on the federal form when you sell it, unless the kilometers at changeout were certified by an approved 'agency.' I read on this thread a while ago that the State of Washington was using the State Police for the certification so that residents of Wash. state could import Canadian market Odys. Good luck.

I have been coming to this board for the past three months reading all that many of you have posted........ have learned much and I thought I would pass along my experience so others may learn from me as I have learned from so many before me. I shopped several dealers in the Cincinnati/N. KY area. I was getting the standard run around --- 3-4 week wait with little selection and then you can expect to pay MSRP if not more -- plus, all the extra options (such as the new VIES video system) were greatly marked up. I then found a dealer with an EX IN STOCK and ready for sale. I thought there must be a catch...... but there was not. I was upside down in my car and had about $1000 negative equity. Even with this, they took my car in trade, paid it off, and let me get out the door with the EX plus I-VS video system (TT included) for $30,200. That breaks down to paying $1000 under MSRP when you consider the negative equity in my vehicle. I told them that was what I wanted going into the deal..... know others had got $1000 off MSRP with much work, so I wanted to see if they would give me basically the same deal, and they did. 4 other Honda dealers in Cincinnati simply laughed at me and gave me a list of reasons that they simply could not do this. Whereas, Jeff Wyler Honda took only about 5 minutes to come back to me and agree to the deal -- no haggling, no countering, no high pressure sales tactics. It was simply the best purchasing experience I have had in years. They were very professional I would highly recommend anyone looking in the Cincinnati area to consider giving them a try. Conversely, I would not bother dealing with Superior Honda or Performance Honda......they are the classic car sales jerks and should be ashamed of the way they treat potential customers. Net, we are extremely happy with our new purchase and again I would like to thank all those who contributed to these boards for helping me make a smart, informed decision.

I too am considering an Canadian Odyssey EX at less than MSRP through a broker in Washington State. Comes without Honda warranty. Does anyone have experience with after market warranties. Are they generally transferable at resale? Any red flags about purchasing after market warranty? Thanks.

    Hello !

I am a first time 'poster' here on Edmunds tho' i have been reading the posts here for some weeks now.
I have decided on a 2001 Odyssey EX with just the standard factory installed stuff and no extra options !
I followed the advise given by some members of faxing my specs to all dealers in the area and asking them for their best price.
Most of them are only selling it to me at MSRP or a few dollars off MSRP.

I would like to know from members here if any of them received a better deal at any of the dealers in the DFW metroplex area ?
And if so,what was the deal and name of the dealer and salesperson ?
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

I've only recently initiated any contact with the dealers in Dallas. My initial assesment is that Lute Riley has the best selection (no waiting sometimes) but they add on dealer installed options to boost their margins. Honda of McKinney does not add equip. but you may have to wait a few weeks. SO it comes down to price Vs. time with these two. Note: THere are other dealerships in Dallas too. Also, Lute Riley was scheduled to receive a large shipment of vans and they called me and told me they wouldn't add equip if I wanted ot order one, so maybe they are more flexible. Josh
