I don't profess to know all the answers, only what I have garnered here from the real experts. Issues with the emmissions are a new one to me. Try posting this in the general Odyssey forum and see what responses you get.
As I said before, the one destined for US sale is your best bet.
Anyone able to get a good deal in southern california? If so, please let me know what dealer you bought from.
Thanks,
Mark
The only differences are that I got Granite Green and the HondaCare 7/100/0 (for $875). Oh, and I drove home 1100 miles to MA. Consider mine broken in. It was worth it to me to save the $1500, have a definite delivery date so I could sell our old car (waiting lists are too iffy) for $1600 more than trade-in, and I really needed some time off, so the ride home was a welcome relaxing experience. The scenery was beautiful this time of year, and Kentucky is pretty close to picture-perfect.
None of the problems mentioned in the forums, the Ody is great! I just had to wash all the bug splats off the front - luckily they don't grow 'em that big around here. The only complaints I have about the minivan is of course the sound system - Honda should be embarassed, I think the AM radio in my '76 Chevette sounded better, and the front driver's side of the floormat that doesn't cover all of the floor - what were they thinking? Ride, noise, fit and finish, and performance were all fine. Now it's time for the accessories...

E-mail me for more info if you'd like.
Hope this info is helpful.
By the way, we have 5-month-old twin daughters and the Ody has been a godsend.
Have 2000 LX with 42k and use only 87 octane. Ave. around 24 MPG.
Ideas on the best value for new tires?
I've also contacted Alton Blakley in KY, as I don't mind driving to save some money. Invoice (including dest. charge) is $21,706. I think $23,000 strikes a good balance between profit for the dealer and good deal for me. What do you guys think?
Thanks,
Parker

Everyone wants to get a good deal Odyssey. I am still looking to pay no more than MSRP. Why are you guys/gals looking for $700 or 800.- plus for an extended warranty 7/100,000? Remember this is the HONDA we are talking about. THE reliable car manufacturer just like Maytag in washers and dryers.
$700- warranty + MSRP= MSRP+ $700.-
Do you people know something about the Quality of Honda Odyssey that I don't know? If you do please share. I want to keep my car/van at least 100,000 miles.
I bought a 7 yr extended warranty for my 83 Volvo 240 L. I did have to replace radiator and A/C. Sold it after 11 years @ 145,000 miles. I came in positive a couple hundred bucks.
I had a couple Toyotas, never needed extended warranty.
My 93 Mercury Villager (Nissan Quest's twin) has 172,000 miles on it, still going. Never had any major problem. Wife's 97 Toyota Avalon 72,000 miles on it, drives like a new one.
I've never owned a Honda before but always heard about Honda's good quality. Why do I need to purchase an extended warranty for a Honda? Is it like wearing belts and suspenders?
???
I also had quotes back in March for $500 under MSRP from Performance Honda and Superior Honda. Jeff Wyler wouldn't budge from MSRP and Century Honda wouldn't give me a price at all via email. If you don't have any luck with them, try White Allen or Matt Castrucci in Dayton, Voss in Tipp City, or Hugh White in Columbus.
1) While Honda has a great reputation for reliability, minivans seem to have more problems than sedans.
2) The most common problems associated with the Odyssey (according to what people post on the Problems board) seem to be with the transmission, wheel vibrations, and the automatic sliding doors (EX only). If the door(s) fail, I'll break even on the deal or come out a little behind. If the tranny fails, I come out way ahead.
I also like to think of it as additional insurance and peace of mind. Without working out all the numbers here, the additional coverage on a $/mile basis seemed worth it to me. Now, if everything falls apart at 101K miles, I'm going to be pretty PO'd, but not as PO'd as I would be if something went wrong at 37K and I didn't buy the warranty.
aka Northern Virgina / Southern Maryland.
I'll echo what azmom1 said in #1276 "Any Arizona buyers?" ...seems like MSRP is all I've heard, plus about 6-8 week wait for an EX. I want to do better than that, in at least one of those two areas (cost, wait) if not both!
Anyone have dealer recommendations?
(Aside: I really want an LX with only the power driver's seat -- but no, can't have it that way. And sheesh, would be nice to offer a power passenger seat too, wouldn't it? I just don't get it, you'd think that if there is one place manufactuers should work to satisfy people's various sizes and shapes it should be the front two seats. I don't understand the "take it or leave it" options there -- and there don't seem to be any aftermarket options either.)
On page 82, they show that the 1999 is "worse than average!" And that the 2000 is just "average" in reliability. (Biggest faults being "Electrical," "Integrity," and "Hardware."
Does anyone know how "serious" these reliability quirks are? (And since the 99, 00, and 01 are almost identically the same car, shouldn't we expect the same to be true in 01?)
Lastly, all the minivan reliability ratings (of other manufacturers too) pale in comparison with the Sienna. Personally I think the Sienna drives better -- but I don't like its 3rd row and small luggage space, which is the main reason I'm leaning toward the Odyssey.
One last gripe -- who chose the Odyssey color selections??? ugh. (I just have to keep reminding myself ...I'm a man, and I don't care about the color, give me horsepower and room for a 4x8.) But I still have to say it -- blech!
I've got 6500 on my 2001 EX (delivered 1/31/01), and have used only regular. No problems at all, good pickup, esp at 65 when passing on the interstate. Jumps from 65 to 80 without a murmur. I'd suggest saving the dollars and use regular.
FWIW, I went with the Chrysler T&C in the end. Got the Limited at an out-the-door price that was within $1k if the OTD price of the Odyssey EX, although the MSRPs are $10k apart. As nearly as I can tell the reliability of the two is close, but favors the Honda.
If reliability is your main concern I'd recommend the Toyota Sienna, although you sacrifice lots of cargo room.
i finally just booked a deal today at msrp in the east bay, but it was tough getting to that point. out of curiousity i checked several other areas - boise ($500 below msrp if you pick it up there, at msrp if you get it delivered), arizona and las vegas (both $500 to $1,000 above msrp).
new orleans, la was willing to go $1,000 or more BELOW msrp, further evidence prices are going to fall.
berkeley honda (jim doten's) was willing to go $500 above msrp - but wouldn't budge below that. of course NOW that i've ordered somewhere else they say they could have done it...
it seems to me supply and demand is slowly equalizing, so prices at least aren't the $1,500 above msrp that i've heard was average just a few months ago.
recommendation: if you do not need the cargo space of the honda, go with the toyota sienna. they know that handa is kicking their tail here, and seem willing to deal. i had a deal at hilltop off hwy 80 down to invoice with no additional markup, and i stood firm at $300 below invoice - they didn't accept that price, but i think they will call me tomorrow and say ok. there are tons of sienna's on every lot in the bay area, and they are hurting to get rid of these solid vehicles. i need the space for hauling kids for a summer camp company, so i have no choice, but most wouldn't probably notice much difference and could get a better equiped, more reliable vehicle at a better price.
i will post my "msrp" dealer once delivery is done.
good luck!

If you choose to use this service read the terms & conditions carefully, and don't bid more than MSRP.
So off the market place I went, and found a GG EX/NAV at MSRP at College Park, MD Honda with a 6 week wait. On April 11, 2001 I picked up my new Ody, 53 weeks after first getting on my initial waiting list.
The van is great. It tracks straight as an arrow. Is quiet. Gets 25 mpg highway. It can leap tall (never mind.)
Ten days later (April 21, 2001) I got the call that my van was in at Browns Honda for $26,151.
Ten days. Ten days at $270 per day. I should have paid MSRP a year ago.
I would also like to tell you how you can finance the van while leaving the money you saved to pay for it in the stock market. But that is another story.
Don (0 for 2)
I'm sorry, but I broke out laughing. That's the kind of thing that happens to me.
Well, at least you have your van. Best of luck with it.
You must be like me, always getting in the wrong lines at the bank, supermarket, or warehouse club.
Plus I'm also invisible -- can't get a waiter's attention anywhere; the Roadside Cafe is the worse :-)

I'm not ready to buy until early July. Does anyone know were I could find MSRPs for the Oddy options? Edmunds notes they are all dealer installed and does not have pricing. I'd like to work from a known set of numbers.
Originally, I was set on buying the Sienna. But with four kids, cargo space is a prime consideration. We still might buy a Sienna as the second family car, but we need something with space if we expect to go on family vacations.
Went for a 20 mile ride in it tonight when odometer read 50 miles. The stereo quality was excellent with the factory installed stereo w/CD in the EX. I seriously doubt any discounted prices of any magnitude on the Odyssey for some time as it is a great bargain at MSRP. Other minivans need to have a LARGE discount off MSRP to be comparable to the value of either Odyssey LX or EX as MSRP.
I get the van in a week, plus for a fee of $125(to cover airfare back home).
Please do not paid $2000 over the MSRP to the local dealer. Cheers!
And cyuesc, Jim really is a great guy, I work with him often.
Please remember that our Terms of Use prohibit soliciting on Town Hall. Thanks.

Within 3 days I found 2 dealerships in Charlotte, NC area, both that had customers back out. Total wait time 3 days. I'm paying $26,840 MSRP with a couple throw ins: High gloss paint finish/treatment and mudguards. It came in a day early and the salesman wanted me to come in tonight. When I said I would be there tomorrow morning, he seemed a little frazzled that I didn't come right there and then. It gave me a bad impression that he needed to dump it off to me ASAP? The other dealer that called me and said there was one on their lot was the same way. Of course I already put a $500 non-refundable deposit with the first dealership. Is there something up with this??
Also, when I asked for the Honda Care Extended Warranty, the salesman said they don't offer it and have their own Ext warranty 7/100/100 for $1295. Of course, reading Edmunds advice on Ext Warranties, I learned they must have the Manufacturer warranty. As anyone else run into this? How do I go about getting the Honda Care Ext Warranty 7/100/0 for $875???? Just call another honda dealer? Has anyone gotten a better price?? Thanks Tomorrow is the big day!!!
Thanks a bunch!
MossisBoss.com is where I went to get my Odyssey, say hi to Jay for me from Corpus Christi.
Thanks...
