Smells like the whole boat sat out in the sun too long!!!!!

I don't profess to know all the answers, only what I have garnered here from the real experts. Issues with the emmissions are a new one to me. Try posting this in the general Odyssey forum and see what responses you get.

As I said before, the one destined for US sale is your best bet.

There are some good deals in Cincinnati has anyone recently been able to do any better than 700 below MSRP?
  • fp200fp200 Member Posts: 4
Dealer in So Cal is marking up the Odyssey $2500 over MSRP and saying it's not negotiable.

Anyone able to get a good deal in southern california? If so, please let me know what dealer you bought from.

    Thanks,

    Mark

We purchased our 2000 lx in jan. 2000. We have put 10,000 miles on it with the steel wheels and have had no shimmy our pull of any kind.I have had up to speeds of 90 mph + and it tracks like a sports car. Also have had no problems of any kind with this van as posted in ody forums and paid msrp. Good luck on your choice.

I had the EXACT same experience with AB as ody_man_out, just a few days later. As a matter of fact, our Ody's shared the ride from Canada to Somerset, KY. Same dates, same price, same driver (Lonnie is pretty cool), same great experience with Tracy and Barry. I highly recommend them.

The only differences are that I got Granite Green and the HondaCare 7/100/0 (for $875). Oh, and I drove home 1100 miles to MA. Consider mine broken in. It was worth it to me to save the $1500, have a definite delivery date so I could sell our old car (waiting lists are too iffy) for $1600 more than trade-in, and I really needed some time off, so the ride home was a welcome relaxing experience. The scenery was beautiful this time of year, and Kentucky is pretty close to picture-perfect.

None of the problems mentioned in the forums, the Ody is great! I just had to wash all the bug splats off the front - luckily they don't grow 'em that big around here. The only complaints I have about the minivan is of course the sound system - Honda should be embarassed, I think the AM radio in my '76 Chevette sounded better, and the front driver's side of the floormat that doesn't cover all of the floor - what were they thinking? Ride, noise, fit and finish, and performance were all fine. Now it's time for the accessories...

I recently purchased a 2001 EX (Mesa Beige) from a dealer in Oklahoma for $750 off MSRP, plus I made them throw in a cassette deck to seal the deal. The vehicle was on the lot at the time (in fact, they had two), and they'd had it about 2-3 weeks when I finally pulled the trigger on the deal. They are now awaiting shipment on another Ody EX, but have since sold the other Mesa Beige one. A competing dealer in the Oklahoma City area didn't have our color preference in stock at the time, but quoted me $750 off over the phone if I'd get on the waiting list.

E-mail me for more info if you'd like.

    Hope this info is helpful.

By the way, we have 5-month-old twin daughters and the Ody has been a godsend.

See my post #1227. Supply is definitely catching up with demand as evidenced by the fact L.A. area dealers have unsold Odysseys in inventory, something unheard of just a few months ago. There is absolutely no reason to pay over sticker any longer. Also remember that the internet or fleet sales manager can get you better prices than if you were to walk off the street and tried to haggle with the floor salesman. Good luck.

With the gas prices for premium(93) more than $2, I am planning to fill odyssey with 87. Did any one ever fill 87 in odyssey?
  • grecargrecar Member Posts: 2
I recently put a deposit on an EX model with navigation. It is to arrive at the dealer next week. I was able to get the dealer to agree to a price of $28,000, $840 below invoice. They are expecting about 30 Odysseys in over the next 3 weeks and most are unsold. I was surprised how easily they agreed to my offer. I might have even been able to get them down to $1000 below MSRP. My initial offer was $28,000 and they accepted it, I was actually expecting them to refuse my initial offer any try to get $500 below MSRP.

Looking for good prices in the Houston area, any help is appreciated.

Have 2000 LX with 42k and use only 87 octane. Ave. around 24 MPG.

Ideas on the best value for new tires?

I'm looking to buy a Starlight Silver LX *before* mid-July. I was thinking we might get a little more bargaining power going for 2 vans at once and may benefit from swapping notes. I've sent out around 20 emails to dealers and received 6 replies so far--just one from a dealer who will discount a little off MSRP. Hopefully, they will keep coming.

I've also contacted Alton Blakley in KY, as I don't mind driving to save some money. Invoice (including dest. charge) is $21,706. I think $23,000 strikes a good balance between profit for the dealer and good deal for me. What do you guys think?

I'll be ready to buy an odyssey in July... but should I wait for the 2002 model (assuming I can still get a 2001). Did anyone hear if there are changes in store for the 2002?

    Thanks,
    Parker

    Guys and Gals:

Everyone wants to get a good deal Odyssey. I am still looking to pay no more than MSRP. Why are you guys/gals looking for $700 or 800.- plus for an extended warranty 7/100,000? Remember this is the HONDA we are talking about. THE reliable car manufacturer just like Maytag in washers and dryers.

    $700- warranty + MSRP= MSRP+ $700.-

Do you people know something about the Quality of Honda Odyssey that I don't know? If you do please share. I want to keep my car/van at least 100,000 miles.

I bought a 7 yr extended warranty for my 83 Volvo 240 L. I did have to replace radiator and A/C. Sold it after 11 years @ 145,000 miles. I came in positive a couple hundred bucks.
I had a couple Toyotas, never needed extended warranty.
My 93 Mercury Villager (Nissan Quest's twin) has 172,000 miles on it, still going. Never had any major problem. Wife's 97 Toyota Avalon 72,000 miles on it, drives like a new one.

I've never owned a Honda before but always heard about Honda's good quality. Why do I need to purchase an extended warranty for a Honda? Is it like wearing belts and suspenders?

    ???

I live in the Cincy area and am pricing EX's. From whom and what price did you get? I've been getting about $400 under MSRP quotes.
  • cincy_ody_mikecincy_ody_mike Member Posts: 28
I know you were asking Clay, but I thought I'd throw in my $0.02. I got my Ody EX 3 weeks ago from Honda East for $750 under MSRP. Ask for Lou Ann Robb, who does internet sales for them. I can't guarantee you'll get the same price, but the transaction was simple and painless. The whole deal (except delivery) was done via email and phone calls. Tell her Mike B. sent you.

I also had quotes back in March for $500 under MSRP from Performance Honda and Superior Honda. Jeff Wyler wouldn't budge from MSRP and Century Honda wouldn't give me a price at all via email. If you don't have any luck with them, try White Allen or Matt Castrucci in Dayton, Voss in Tipp City, or Hugh White in Columbus.

I went back and forth on the warranty decision a lot before I decided to take it, and it came down to a couple of reasons:

    1) While Honda has a great reputation for reliability, minivans seem to have more problems than sedans.

    2) The most common problems associated with the Odyssey (according to what people post on the Problems board) seem to be with the transmission, wheel vibrations, and the automatic sliding doors (EX only). If the door(s) fail, I'll break even on the deal or come out a little behind. If the tranny fails, I come out way ahead.

I also like to think of it as additional insurance and peace of mind. Without working out all the numbers here, the additional coverage on a $/mile basis seemed worth it to me. Now, if everything falls apart at 101K miles, I'm going to be pretty PO'd, but not as PO'd as I would be if something went wrong at 37K and I didn't buy the warranty.

Anyone with a recent Odyssey EX purchase in AZ, preferably phoenix area--seems almost like price fixing around here at MSRP easily everywhere, can't get an internet/fleet/or Costco quote below. I have heard one offer of 400 below. Many people made comments about the internet/fleet prices being better but I'm thinking I may do better haggling in person--any comments?
  • spartan10spartan10 Member Posts: 2
I'm in the western suburbs of Wash. D.C.,
aka Northern Virgina / Southern Maryland.

I'll echo what azmom1 said in #1276 "Any Arizona buyers?" ...seems like MSRP is all I've heard, plus about 6-8 week wait for an EX. I want to do better than that, in at least one of those two areas (cost, wait) if not both!

    Anyone have dealer recommendations?

(Aside: I really want an LX with only the power driver's seat -- but no, can't have it that way. And sheesh, would be nice to offer a power passenger seat too, wouldn't it? I just don't get it, you'd think that if there is one place manufactuers should work to satisfy people's various sizes and shapes it should be the front two seats. I don't understand the "take it or leave it" options there -- and there don't seem to be any aftermarket options either.)

The April 2001 issue of Consumer Reports shows that Odyssey reliability is just *average*.

On page 82, they show that the 1999 is "worse than average!" And that the 2000 is just "average" in reliability. (Biggest faults being "Electrical," "Integrity," and "Hardware."

Does anyone know how "serious" these reliability quirks are? (And since the 99, 00, and 01 are almost identically the same car, shouldn't we expect the same to be true in 01?)

Lastly, all the minivan reliability ratings (of other manufacturers too) pale in comparison with the Sienna. Personally I think the Sienna drives better -- but I don't like its 3rd row and small luggage space, which is the main reason I'm leaning toward the Odyssey.

One last gripe -- who chose the Odyssey color selections??? ugh. (I just have to keep reminding myself ...I'm a man, and I don't care about the color, give me horsepower and room for a 4x8.) But I still have to say it -- blech!

Reg gas (~87 octane) gives you 205 hp, and premium gas (~93) gives you 210. The Ody works well on either. Bet none of us can tell the difference in the 5 horses!! :-)

I've got 6500 on my 2001 EX (delivered 1/31/01), and have used only regular. No problems at all, good pickup, esp at 65 when passing on the interstate. Jumps from 65 to 80 without a murmur. I'd suggest saving the dollars and use regular.

I live in Sterling, VA (near Dulles apt) and bought my '01 EX from Janice Pohanka of Pohanka H. of Fredericksburg, VA. Ordered Nov 1, 2000, delivered Jan 31, 2001. Paid MSRP with totally my choice of options. I got the tranny cooler and cassette deck (I listen to The teaching Company lectures during my commute) plus the 7/100/0 Hondacare warranty. Paid $925 for the warranty. Only "up" was a $149 documentation fee, and I wasn't in a position to argue because my 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan (with 165K miles) was transmission dead and I HAD to get new wheels. They were honest, and did what they said they would do when they said they would do it. You might give her a call. You're welcome to mention my name (Arthur Smith). Good luck.

I am in the market for a Silver '01 EX Oddy, but most of the dealers I talked to wanted at least $1500 above MSRP. I am considering priceline.com also, but not sure I like the idea of not being able to check out my van before I take delivery. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way, do you think the problems (read from Oddy problems board) with the oddy outweight the benefits? Thanks.

Try liquidprice.com, I bought mine last month at 500 over. Once you locked the price, you can go to the dealer to pick the car up. BTW, I live in SF Bay Area.
  • cgaydoscgaydos Member Posts: 116
A month ago I emailed a number of the dealers in the bay area. Here are the responses I received: Dublin quoted $500 over MSRP, Santa Rosa $700 over, Tracy $1000 over. The internet contact from Santa Rosa called a couple times and really seemed to want the business. He promised delivery within a week.

FWIW, I went with the Chrysler T&C in the end. Got the Limited at an out-the-door price that was within $1k if the OTD price of the Odyssey EX, although the MSRPs are $10k apart. As nearly as I can tell the reliability of the two is close, but favors the Honda.

If reliability is your main concern I'd recommend the Toyota Sienna, although you sacrifice lots of cargo room.

I received an internet quote of $600 below MSRP for an in-stock EX in Columbus, OH. Tom Black at Honda East was great to deal with. Had a phone conversation Saturday morning and drove up to pick up on Sat. afternoon. It was ready to go. We drove and inspected it, wrote the check and were out the door. Enjoyed the 2 hour ride home.

i just spent the last week working on this price issue on an LX basic model, a couple of hours a day.

i finally just booked a deal today at msrp in the east bay, but it was tough getting to that point. out of curiousity i checked several other areas - boise ($500 below msrp if you pick it up there, at msrp if you get it delivered), arizona and las vegas (both $500 to $1,000 above msrp).

new orleans, la was willing to go $1,000 or more BELOW msrp, further evidence prices are going to fall.

berkeley honda (jim doten's) was willing to go $500 above msrp - but wouldn't budge below that. of course NOW that i've ordered somewhere else they say they could have done it...

it seems to me supply and demand is slowly equalizing, so prices at least aren't the $1,500 above msrp that i've heard was average just a few months ago.

recommendation: if you do not need the cargo space of the honda, go with the toyota sienna. they know that handa is kicking their tail here, and seem willing to deal. i had a deal at hilltop off hwy 80 down to invoice with no additional markup, and i stood firm at $300 below invoice - they didn't accept that price, but i think they will call me tomorrow and say ok. there are tons of sienna's on every lot in the bay area, and they are hurting to get rid of these solid vehicles. i need the space for hauling kids for a summer camp company, so i have no choice, but most wouldn't probably notice much difference and could get a better equiped, more reliable vehicle at a better price.

i will post my "msrp" dealer once delivery is done.

    good luck!

Since I have an intimate relationship with the service you mentioned (there is a thread on the topic on the Smart Shopper boards) I can tell you the dealers are told the car you purchase must be brand new with less than 75 miles on the odometer. If you dislike the car upon inspection you can reject the deal, provided there is a legitimate reason (door ding, scratch, etc.).

If you choose to use this service read the terms & conditions carefully, and don't bid more than MSRP.

This is the tale that I have to tell. A tale of waiting and woe. On April 4,2000 I placed my name on the UBS (United Buyes Service) waiting list at Browns Honda of Arlington, VA for a 2001 GG EX/NAV. The price was $26,151 ($2,689 under MSRP.) After waiting 11 months I checked with them and was told that it would not be in, in April 2001 either.

So off the market place I went, and found a GG EX/NAV at MSRP at College Park, MD Honda with a 6 week wait. On April 11, 2001 I picked up my new Ody, 53 weeks after first getting on my initial waiting list.

The van is great. It tracks straight as an arrow. Is quiet. Gets 25 mpg highway. It can leap tall (never mind.)

Ten days later (April 21, 2001) I got the call that my van was in at Browns Honda for $26,151.

Ten days. Ten days at $270 per day. I should have paid MSRP a year ago.

I would also like to tell you how you can finance the van while leaving the money you saved to pay for it in the stock market. But that is another story.

Ain't that a kick in the pants.

I'm sorry, but I broke out laughing. That's the kind of thing that happens to me.

    A one-year wait is W..A..Y..... T..O..O..... L..O..N..G.....! What a kick is right!

You must be like me, always getting in the wrong lines at the bank, supermarket, or warehouse club.

Me too. Went to the dealer to get OEM brake pads put on. Naturally they were out and put on aftermarket pads without calling me first (I could have gone to Midas 2 blocks away for that, with a lifetime warranty!).

Plus I'm also invisible -- can't get a waiter's attention anywhere; the Roadside Cafe is the worse :-)

I stopped in at a couple dealerships in the Sacramento area (foothills) over the weekend, and test drove an Oddy. While we were waiting at the 1st dealer, I checked out the options catalog that included MSRPs. The first dealer didn't have any to test drive, and on we went to another dealer. Second dealer was selling at MSRP, but certain options were mandatory and, remembering a few of the options from the first dealership, I noted the options at the second dealership were really marked up. We test drove a GG Oddy, with leather, cassette, tow package, cross bars, and protective package. It's been on the lot for 3 weeks with over a 100 mi.-- if anyone's interested, he might be willing to deal. We made a half-hearted offer on another Oddy, different color and fewer options, but we were told that they expected to get asking price for that one. It had only been on the lot a couple days.

I'm not ready to buy until early July. Does anyone know were I could find MSRPs for the Oddy options? Edmunds notes they are all dealer installed and does not have pricing. I'd like to work from a known set of numbers.

Originally, I was set on buying the Sienna. But with four kids, cargo space is a prime consideration. We still might buy a Sienna as the second family car, but we need something with space if we expect to go on family vacations.
  • carleton1carleton1 Member Posts: 560
And it took about 5 weeks to get here. Paid MSRP less $180 ($26,840 less $180 = $26,660...plus taxes, etc which is a real bargain. Until recently the Odyssey were selling at MSRP and had been strictly MSRP since the introduction at 2 of the 4 dealers we visited. In March 1999, the waiting time was about 5 months. No pressure to buy any extra options. The Odyssey seats are much more comfortable for me than the seats in my 1999 Grand Caravan SE.
Went for a 20 mile ride in it tonight when odometer read 50 miles. The stereo quality was excellent with the factory installed stereo w/CD in the EX. I seriously doubt any discounted prices of any magnitude on the Odyssey for some time as it is a great bargain at MSRP. Other minivans need to have a LARGE discount off MSRP to be comparable to the value of either Odyssey LX or EX as MSRP.

I just took delivery of a GG Odyssey EX for MSRP (no options) from Robertson Palmdale Honda (60 miles north of Downtown LA). I dealt with the Internet Sales Manager, Jim Maze at sales@hondascheap.com; 661-265-6000. No haggling, no pressure-tactics, just friendly, courteous service. It took a 15 minute phone call to initiate and finalize the deal.

I get the van in a week, plus for a fee of $125(to cover airfare back home).

Please do not paid $2000 over the MSRP to the local dealer. Cheers!

I had a Ford Windstar LX have another problem with its Headgasket (Surprise..Surprise) and went on a mission to find and locate a Beige EX.

Within 3 days I found 2 dealerships in Charlotte, NC area, both that had customers back out. Total wait time 3 days. I'm paying $26,840 MSRP with a couple throw ins: High gloss paint finish/treatment and mudguards. It came in a day early and the salesman wanted me to come in tonight. When I said I would be there tomorrow morning, he seemed a little frazzled that I didn't come right there and then. It gave me a bad impression that he needed to dump it off to me ASAP? The other dealer that called me and said there was one on their lot was the same way. Of course I already put a $500 non-refundable deposit with the first dealership. Is there something up with this??

Also, when I asked for the Honda Care Extended Warranty, the salesman said they don't offer it and have their own Ext warranty 7/100/100 for $1295. Of course, reading Edmunds advice on Ext Warranties, I learned they must have the Manufacturer warranty. As anyone else run into this? How do I go about getting the Honda Care Ext Warranty 7/100/0 for $875???? Just call another honda dealer? Has anyone gotten a better price?? Thanks Tomorrow is the big day!!!

Thanks to all for the information here, time for paybacks! Dealt with Moss Motors in Lafayette, Louisiana for our new 2001 MB EX. Jay Johnson sold us the Ody for 25,800 and that included the $695 protection package. Sticker was 27,535. There were no problems, handled the entire prep by phone and the van was ready for pickup within 3 weeks from initial phone call. Jay picked me up and had me back on the road in two hours. Honda care 7/100/0 was offered to us for $925. This was one of the easiest and smoothest transactions ever!! Talk to Jay, he will take care of you too.
MossisBoss.com is where I went to get my Odyssey, say hi to Jay for me from Corpus Christi. :)

So, I finally pulled the trigger on a available gg ex for 26100. the only problem is that i have to drive a few hours to get it. The odysseys seem to be more available now and prices are coming down a little.
