If your looking for a car around eastern Massachusetts call Scott Wells at Bernardi Honda in Natick. He handled everything very well. What impressed me most was what he did and what he didn't do when I first talked to him. What he didn't do (which EVERY other sales person did) was ask me for my credit card number. None of the others even asked me if I wanted to buy one first! And that was the thing that Scott did - he asked me what my purchase plans were. In this environment where price is pretty much even its service that makes the difference. It was finally nice to have a good car buying experience.

And thanks to Edmunds for a great web site and town hall!

Based on the "free cold weather package" - those Odys are Canadian versions - no US Honda warranty.

Not saying it's not a good deal - I personally would avoid Canadian Ody's due to the lack of Honda warranty. The seller will probably provide some sort of aftermarket warranty, but will it be accepted?

    Good Luck

They have a few EX @ebay bidding starting $25,000. It lists Special Edition with extended warranty. Also it says all 50 states and CA Emissions Ready US title. Do Canada Odyssey carry US title?
  • djwhitakerdjwhitaker Member Posts: 20
from the ebay ad, it looks like you can buy one outright for $25950. they still have not responded to an email i sent -- not a very good sign.

sbpceap gave an excellent, unbiased comparison. We have a 99 GC SE as the wait for Odyssey LX was 5 months in March 1999. We told my sister and brother-in-law the relative merits, suggested they sit in all minivans at Auto Show, and then go drive the finalists.
A person can get a 4 cyl stripped Caravan (but with A/C, etc...no bells and whistles) for about $17,000 with discounts. Comparably equipped you need a heavy discount on Grand Caravan to match content of Odyssey at MSRP. The Odyssey comes very nicely equipped and is a good buy at MSRP.
After they made a close comparison at the Auto Show where all minivans are in the same large exhibit hall, my brother-in-law did the shopping and they are the proud owners of a Taffeta White 2001 Odyssey EX having paid MSRP less $180.

Have they answered your email questions yet?

I got a quote for EX MSRP+$2000.- in So Calif. I thought I read it wrong. If Xpressmotorcars sell @ $25,900 with US warranty I will go and pick One up today.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
$2000 over! I know there are dealers at MSRP. Some are mentioned in this forum.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
Well, I thought he/she was joking about MSRP+$2000. But got email back claimed that he has EX on hand and other dealer quotes @ sticker price but no stock on hand. I am in no rush so still waiting for best price!
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
    They're out there.

You must be in Orange County, judging by the quote.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    Ray:

You are pretty good. You sure know your business. I am not in OC but the quote is. Got another quote from another closer dealer MSRP+$1000 now. There is a pontential lower price, but still not MSRP.

I stay in touch with the market out there. Not to shabby from 3,000 miles away, eh?

Backtrack a few posts and you'll get some dealer names. I can't say anything bad about any one of them, of those I've seen posted.

I just spent the past 3 or 4 months searching all the dealers around for an Ody (DE, PA, MD, and VA). Pretty much all of them are MSRP. I was able to get on the Towson (Heritage) list for a July delivery at $100 under MSRP (due to coupon at mileone.com). Since I picked up a GG EX in Va Beach last week, I canceled my SS due in July. If you are interested call Jerry and see if it is still available.

Thanks, I did write down a few So Calif dealer names mentioned on the early posts. I want to see if I can get good deal from my "neighborhood" Honda dealer first. One dealer will sell Odyssey @ MSRP, but with a couple grands of options. I walked on that deal. I did find a dealer post MSRP+ $664 on the website, but still $664.- too high to me.
Anyway if everything fails, I can always go to priceline.com, can't I?

ps. I thought CT is in USA.

I did get a response to my email... here is what it said:

    "Final price is $ 25,950 + $ 440 Destination + Shipping (Actual Cost from
    New York to Atlanta)

No tax, No reg, No doc processing.

    20% Deposit required for delivery.

Cars in stock. - ANY COLOR.

    extended warranty included by www.autoservicecontracts.com

Insured by our insurance company. 100% Satisfaction guaranteed. We will fix
    any repairs during transport."

I later asked about whether the Honda factory warranty was good and this was the reply (it is a bit unclear to me whether the question was answered):

"We provide a third party warranty valid through any Honda Service center in
america. We are a US car broker. Every Honda is made in Canada."

I sent another email asking if the gauges were in metric or not. The number for sales is is (323) 463-9800 if you are interested in following up. BTW, i see they also ship from LA, so your shipping costs might not be tood bad. (I have not received a quote on shipping costs from them).

I bought my 2000 Oddysey from Northwest Honda in Reisterstown, MD. and they had the least amount of complaints of any other Honda Dealer in MD when I checked with the attorney generals office that handles car dealers. I don't work for them and I don't get paid to say this. I just think they are great dealer to deal with and I've been buying from them since 1994.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
Good job, I tried to read between the lines. They are telling you the truth. They are a US car broker. Looks like they are selling Canada version of Odyssey. US and Canada Odyssey are both asembled in the same factory no doubt. The question is US warranty, I don't think the Honda factory warranty is honored. I went to the extended warranty web site autoservicescontracts.com not much was saying there.

To my humble opinion I think factory warranty is important, extended warranty is not worth the money to purchase. If I ever got a lemon Odyssey by any chance, I will find out before the factory warranty expires. Also according to raybear's posts I could get a Odyssey in LA @ MSRP. I think I will pass it based on the following thoughts.

    1. We are talking about $450 saving right here vs. no factory warranty. MM? Maybe the 3rd party warranty is as good as factory, but I don't like to find out if I got a lemon and got stranded at Honda dealer.
    2. No re, no doc processing. They show a eEscow @ bay, but you have to pay $75-$95 for the service I didn't go back to eEscow to verify the actual fees. I don't have time to get a SMOG certificate then to local DMV to get it done. I don't like to go to any DMV in LA area, too much traffic and full of people. That's why we pay a new car dealer to do it for us.
Those are my two cents. Your situation may be different than mine.
    Regards.

I found a Granite Green EX at Apostolakis Honda in Cortland, OH. Scheduled for 6/18 production and should be at dealer by around 1st of July. I would have bought it but found one on the ground in KY. I worked with David Beshero (Phone is(330) 638-3060) and was very pleased with the deal. They offered a little less than sticker plus only $60 for processing fees. They also have other colors coming sooner, like a Starlight Silver EX yesterday.

Their allocations are higher than most so availability is good there. Good Luck!!

After driving the Honda mini van, I decided to go with the Dodge Grand Caravan ES. One of the biggest problems I had with the Honda was the leg support. At 6'3 I did not feel that there was enough seat to keep me comfortable. My legs were too long for the seat.
I also wanted more features than the Honda offers on this model.
I would never pay MSRP for any car. With the Honda being so hot, I was able to get a Dodge ES at invoice.

I had really awful experience with tim and his"team in Canada" I think it is a rip off. First he sent me fake VIN, second I was informed speedometer will be changed, warranty void in the US, read this extra bonus Cold weather package $3500 worth. Heated mirrors are standard, block heater is only $35, splash guards $55. Very suspucios guy. What is a point to buy a new car with no warranty from the manufacturer. I would say keep it in Canada. I think you are risking too much dealing with these guys from a company nobody ever heard or bought from, even though they told me they sell 20 cars a week. When I asked for reference, there was not even one. Stay away.

I've been lurking for a while but thought I'd post some insights regarding the Canadian Odys. I gathered most of this intelligence from this site in the past when I considered a Canadian model (I'm based in NC and when I initially went looking for a test drive, the only with any in stock to drive was a Dodge dealer that was importing Canadian models and reselling them).

First, as mentioned in numerous recent posts, the US Honda warranty is not valid. Thus, folks that deal in this market typically add a third party warranty. IMHO this isn't the same--particularly since most US Honda dealers won't look kindly on the fact that you bypassed them to purchase the Canadian model.

Other significant concerns include the fact that the vehicle must be "retitled" (regardless of what the dealers say, I view this as "used"). Also, the speedometer / odometer must be replaced (kilometers vs. miles). At least in NC, this must be noted on the title. I would expect this would significantly impact resale. I know I would shy away from a used vehicle whose odometer had been replaced.

Bottom line, I needed to see used vehicle pricing for me to even consider this alternative and since I was only seeing marginal price breaks, I walked.

Of course, I'm not in any hurry. At this point I'm still waiting to put money down. Trying to decide whether to go with an '01 in a color that is not our first choice, place an order for an '01 and risk that it won't ever be built (most local dealers have already received and/or allocated their '01 allotments), or put money down on an '02 (particularly since we're favoring leather and it looks like there will be some new color options).

    Luck to all!

Run do not walk to the nearest exit if you're a US resident and even thinking about a Canadian Ody. Mthadley is exactly correct (post #1378). Even worse than his note is that when you sell you Ody, under US federal law you MUST state "mileage unknown" because you replaced the speedo. The Canadian vans have speedos in kilometers, and if you put a miles unit in, you have created a monster. What would you pay for, say, a 5 year old van, "mileage unknown"?

One state (Washington) is trying to solve that problem, by having the State Police certify the kilometers at changeover, so that the buyer can then add the km (converted to miles) to the miles on the speedo. Nusiance, but might work.

The warranty is simple--there is none. American Honda will not honor any factory warranty on Canadian models, nor sell you an extended. That's why the importers of Canadian units always include a third party warranty. Those are like K-Mart Specials--after you wait a day or two for the warranty company to OK the repair, you then wait for the repair, and usually have to pay a deductible per repair. My daughter had a good 3-party and they did replace the tranny at 45,000, but it took 2 days to get them to OK it, a day to get it towed to the dealer, and 3 days for the dealer to do the work. Her deductible was $100 and she had to rent a car for a week, at $25 per day. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

I recommend that you stick with USA spec units and save lots of hassle.

Some things in this world amaze me. I have read several people saying that they woould never pay MSRP for anything. Does any understand that you can buy cars for less money, however compare TOTAL cost in 3 years when you want to get rid of it! The Odyssey may be 2000 more but in 3 years it is worth 5000 more than the competetion.

That rather sums it up about our new 2001 MB-EX-Navi. That was what I heard over our 2-way shortly after my wife began her 60 mile portion of the 180 mile trip home from the dealer. That dealership, Burne Honda in Scranton, PA, and salesman Dave Campfield are truly outstanding. We ordered at the beginning of Feb at a very good price with no hassle, no fuss and could not have asked for more professionalism and good old fashion courtesy. We live just a few miles from the Mason Dixon line and made inquiries of Honda dealers throughout northern MD and southern PA. Even visited our old dealer in Va Bch, VA. Burne Honda and Dave Campfield topped them all. Recommend you give Dave a call at 1-800-822-2110 or contact him via www.burnehonda.com. You'll be buying no higher than MSRP and possibly even below. Tell him his MB-EX-Navi in Carroll Valley recommended him. Now to get ready to travel in style during our 6K+ cross country trip this summer. de Hawk

Tim, how can you claim your warranty is the same as the manufacturer's? Do all Honda dealers honor it? Or does the consumer have to pay and wait for reimbursement?

The price is okay, but what do delivery fees run? Say to Los Angeles. Just curious.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    Good question Ray.

    Tim:

Can your Odyssey be registered as new? Do you provide vehicle registration service? Do I need a Smog cert for Ca?

I recently purchased a 2001 LX after a fair amount of research that included reading many of the comments in this forum. I found a number of these posts to be helpful and I am writing to share my experience in the hope that others will find this information beneficial as well.

I began by going to the Honda web site and gathering the email addresses (or fax numbers) of about 30 dealerships within a 4 hour drive of my house near Knoxville, TN. I simply requested each dealership's best price on a 2001 LX. I received a response from 20 of them. Most just quoted the MSRP of $24,340. Some were above MSRP and a few were below. The lowest price was $24,000 which was quoted by two dealerships. One of the "low-bidders" was actually $233 cheaper than the other because there were no "customer service fees" or other dealer add-ons. However, because the other low-bidder had been the first dealership to respond to my request and had continued to follow-up, I offered them the chance to match the price. They actually agreed to not only match the price, but even go slightly lower! The final out-the-door price was $25,500. Here are the exact numbers:

    2001 Odyssey LX - $23,772.10
    Customer Service Fee - $168.70
    TN sales Tax (6%) - $1,439.32
    Local/Business Tax - $87.88
TN Tag and Title - $32.00
    Total Price - $25,500.00

(I think it's funny that they still included a "customer service fee" but lowered their price on the van to make up for it!)

We paid a $500 deposit for the van which arrived 3 weeks later. The deposit was applied towards the cost of the van so we owed $25,000 when we went to the dealership. There were no surprises and everything went very smoothly. The dealership is Honda Morristown (located in Morristown, TN, a city 45 minutes northeast of Knoxville). I was willing to drive 4 hours from home for a good deal, but ended up only having to travel a little over an hour (past two large Honda dealerships that absolutely refused to work with me at all). I'm sorry if this sounds like a commercial, but it was nice to actually find a Honda dealer that acted like they wanted my business! I hope you find this helpful and that you will get an even better deal than I did. Good luck! This van is worth the effort! We have had ours for two weeks and really like it!

Martin318, thanks for the very helpful info. one question (to you and anyone else who has used the method you used). Did you address your email/fax to a specific individual at each dealership (e.g., fleet manager) or just to a generic mailbox/fax number?

I have read other posts who have used a similar method, but have made an explicit offer.. which is better, making an explicit offer vs. saying "give me your best price".

thanks, and congrats on your painless purchase.

Let me tell a brief story about my buying experience using United Buying Service through my local credit union. First, using BUS to buy a Honda Odyssey EX is not for the impatient; rather, you will need to plan for your delivery 12 to 16 months in advance. Why such a wait? Because your final payment for this desirable vehicle is unheard of - as you will see. I initially contacted BUS and requested my "buying certificate" on February 14, 2000 - yes, that's 2000. Over the phone you provide your color and option preferences. As for me, I wanted a GA or a Mesa Beige EX with ABSOLUTELY no options. Not a pin stripe nor cross bar. About a week afterward, I received a certificate in the mail along with the name of the local dealership that would be handling my purchase; in my case, Brown's Arlington Honda in, you guessed it, Arlington, Virginia. At this point, you set your timer for 12 months and wait. Once your timer goes off, start contacting BUS and the dealership and begin confirming where you are in the pecking order. If I remember correctly, in February of 2000, I was about 182 in line. One year later, about 20 something. Then the forecasting begins -- "Well sir, you should take delivery in early March", which then turns into late March, then April, May, and finally the first week of June. BUS had just informed me early on June 6th that I would probably have yet another two weeks to wait... a half an hour later, I was called by the dealership stating that a Mesa Beige '01 EX was in stock and ready for delivery. It turned out that the person in line ahead of me failed to call back in time. When my wife and I arrived at Brown's Honda, our new Odyssey was there without ANY dealer ad-dons. So, what did we finally, pay?

    2001 EX $24,354
    Options $0
    Virginia Tax $770
    Tags $51
    TOTAL $25,175

Just that easy and over $2,000 less than MSRP. To round out my purchase I bought an extended warranty 7/100/0 for $925 from a Honda dealership in Delaware, and $550 in optional accessories from the web sites that I will install myself.

Our sales person was the best and again, no pressure to add options.

All of this worked out because of patience and alot of research utilizing Edmunds.com reviews and this chat room. Thanks everyone!

When I sent my emails and faxes I did not address them to any one person in particular. I'm not sure if its better to do it that way or not, but it worked for me. Also, I was hoping that by leaving it open-ended by asking for "best price" I would get a better deal. Obviously I did not get a deal like garyggl! That was amazing!

Just picked up my SS EX on 6/11.
I live just outside Atlanta, but no one in the metro area would even negotiate. Atlanta is one of the hot Odyssey areas. Got mine for $200 below MSRP, plus $1800 for the Honda entertainment center, and $250 for Doc fees.
The dealer claims that we got a really great deal and that he probably would not sell another one at that price. Therefore, I will not name the dealership. I will say that is was within a 2 hour drive of Atlanta and it was not in Georgia.
I think that if people make the phone calls, they can find less than MSRP within a reasonable drive of Atlanta. I got first quotes of MSRP from a dealership in Savannah, and another in Tifton. With the 2002 looming on the horizon, July & August may be excellent times to pickup a 2001 Odyssey.
The Van is great so far. I have already posted on the other boards that the stereo really does suck.
I had a strange problem with the power doors yesterday. It was raining so I had my lights on. I went to pickup my son at Day Care, and decided to see if the lights would really shut off automatically. I was gone about 2-3 minutes and they did shutdown. However the power doors would not open. I had to turn the doors off and open them by hand. By the time I made it home the doors were working again.
    Otherwise, everything else works great.
  • djwhitakerdjwhitaker Member Posts: 20
can anyone use USB, or is it limited to people with a connection (eg., yours through your credit union). Also, what determines the price? do you name it yourself, or does USB negotiate a group price? the deal you got incredible!
  • dj5dj5 Member Posts: 42
Have to agree that the Atlanta Honda dealers do not discount and in fact add a $795 protection package (additional dealer mark-up). That's why we drove to Alton Blakley in Sommerset, KY where we got our EX at $1000 below MSRP with no add-ons and no doc. fee. $25840 and we were out the door.

We have had for five months now with no problems. We really like the van and feel that for a van there is no comparison. Really like the Toyota Highlander though.

I am looking for a Honda Odessy LX with just the key less entry accessory. One dealership in a suburb of Chicago quoted me 24,340 plus 250.00 for the key less entry option. Has anyone found a dealer in the area selling them for under MSRP? The idiots at a different dealer (grand Honda in Elmhurst) had (3) Odessy in stock but were selling them for over 30,000. They are the worst dealership that I have ever dealt with. I was wondering if anybody got a deal below MSRP and how long they had to wait for their van.

United Buying Service has pre-negotiated prices - generally $100 over invoice; however, the dealer doen't get to pass on charges for their advertising or other incidentals. Give them a call at 1 301 657 1920. I worked with Carla and she was fantastic.
  • edikamedikam Member Posts: 7
I can not agreee with you more. I have been to Grand Honda in Elmhurst, they are crazy people. They offered me EX for $1200 over, in a week. I have received some phone calls from Shamburgh for list price plus mud guards and wheel locks. Not bad deal. Do not waste your time looking for below MSRP, for Chicago it is the price you will not find lower. Try Loeber downtown, they promised a van in three weeks for a list price. Let me know if you find something better.

WAKA - If you're on the north side of Chicago, I would recommend contacting Schlossman's Honda in suburban Milwaukee. I got my LX there in late March for MSRP with free cargo cover, keyless was $248. The van came in less than two weeks, with no hassle at all. Contact Dan Steffen, Internet Manager. Good luck!

    aggiedwat,

Although we live much closer to Chapel Hill, we bought ours from Greensboro, since they could deliver the van in 3 weeks as opposed to 3 months. This was last September for our 2001 EX-N.

However I take the van to Chapel Hill for service.

    Hope this helps...

I spent alot of time price searching in the Milwaukee area for an EX. Most dealers initially quoted MSRP but then tacked on nonnegotiable rustproofing/ fabric protection for an additional cost of 1000 to 1900. What a joke - do some research and anyone will realize that this stuff is pretty useless or easily done with a can of Scotchgard. I was especially offended when I was lectured on how important these things are and how stupid I must be for not wanting them. Went to Schlossman's Honda (a previous message notes this dealership as well) and paid straight MSRP (26,840) and got some additional items at cost. No pressure, straight forward and honest. Will take delivery within two weeks.

Long time lurker, first time poster...

Just wanted to thank everyone for their posts. I just closed the deal on my MB Odyssey EX this morning. Got it for $250 under MSRP. Living in Atlanta, this is a huge deal.

Now its my turn to give some wisdom back:

    1. Special "member only" deals are a fantasy. I should have known better, but I pursued them all. AAA, Sam's Club, MilePoint/Automallonline.com. Its a seller's market for the Odyssey, and club membership will get you nowhere.

    2. While in concept the MilePoint/automall setup is a good idea, in reality its vaporware. For those who don't know, MilePoint lets you cash in frequent flyer miles in return for discounts at online merchants. Its a very good service -- I saved quite a bit of money when I bought some home entertainment equipment earlier this year.

One of their merchants is automallonline.com, which has member dealers who will sell you at a prenegotiated price. For the Odyssey LX, that price is MSRP. Which actually isn't that bad, given that no one in Atlanta would come within $700 of MSRP. Even better, with MilePoint I could use miles to reduce the price another $500.

Only problem is that every dealer I called -- and that includes pretty much every one of them in GA, SC, AL, and TN -- didn't know about the program, or if they did, said they wouldn't participate.

There was another post from someone who successfully used this program in Brooklyn, NY, so I'm sure it can be done, but I ran into nothing but brick walls.

    3. By being persistent yet realistic, I was able to get a deal I could live with. Thanks to another poster from Atlanta who mentioned their deal, I e-mailed Morristown Honda in Tennessee, and got a quote for $26,600 drive-off with August delivery. That's about $500 off of list. This was probably the 12th dealer I spoke to. Almost all dealings were e-mail and phone.

A dealer in south Georgia followed up with me and when I told him about the TN deal, he said he just couldn't match it. MSRP was as far as he could go. He then gave me some very good advice, unsolicited, on ensuring the TN dealer was on the up-and-up. One: make sure I get a Honda order number (and then a VIN number when available). Two: make sure the model number is RL186. Any other model number is a grey market vehicle.

I sent this dealer one last e-mail: If they came down $250, splitting the difference, I would go with them. They had already volunteered to drive the car to Atlanta, and could get one a month earlier. It was worth $250 to me to get the car earlier and not spending 4+ hours driving to and from the TN dealer.

Initially, they refused. The gen. mgr. called me, and I told him I would rather give him my business, but $500 was too much to ignore.

Two hours later, they called back and accepted the offer. I signed the buyer's order this morning.

    5. Postscript: After previous conversations with automallonline.com, they called this morning to tell me the very dealer I closed with was willing to work with me and use the certificate. Since the dealer gets back the discounted money from automall, I called them and offered what I thought was a win-win: sell me the car for MSRP less the discount. They would get the discount back from automall, making $250 more than our current deal, and I would save $500 by using frequent flier miles. No deal. They said they wouldn't come out ahead, and despite what automall said, they aren't participating in the program.

One last call to automall. Turns out the dealer pays an advertising fee to automall as well. They wouldn't give me a specific number, but said the extra $250 in profit I was offering the dealer would be pretty much wiped out by the ad fee.

In any case, here's the deal I got:

    2001 Odyssey EX MB -- $26,601
    Cust Svc Fee -- $249
    GA Tax (ugh, 7%) -- $1879
    Title & Wty Fee -- $21
    Total -- $28,750

I hope others are able to learn from my experience like I did from previous postings. Good luck to all in finding your own deals.
