has Odyssesy EX's advertised for under $26,000. i am not sure what other costs are involved (delivery, processing), but i was wondering if anyone has bought from them and what your experience has been?
thanks!
And thanks to Edmunds for a great web site and town hall!
Not saying it's not a good deal - I personally would avoid Canadian Ody's due to the lack of Honda warranty. The seller will probably provide some sort of aftermarket warranty, but will it be accepted?
Good Luck
A person can get a 4 cyl stripped Caravan (but with A/C, etc...no bells and whistles) for about $17,000 with discounts. Comparably equipped you need a heavy discount on Grand Caravan to match content of Odyssey at MSRP. The Odyssey comes very nicely equipped and is a good buy at MSRP.
After they made a close comparison at the Auto Show where all minivans are in the same large exhibit hall, my brother-in-law did the shopping and they are the proud owners of a Taffeta White 2001 Odyssey EX having paid MSRP less $180.
I got a quote for EX MSRP+$2000.- in So Calif. I thought I read it wrong. If Xpressmotorcars sell @ $25,900 with US warranty I will go and pick One up today.
You must be in Orange County, judging by the quote.
You are pretty good. You sure know your business. I am not in OC but the quote is. Got another quote from another closer dealer MSRP+$1000 now. There is a pontential lower price, but still not MSRP.

Backtrack a few posts and you'll get some dealer names. I can't say anything bad about any one of them, of those I've seen posted.
Anyway if everything fails, I can always go to priceline.com, can't I?
ps. I thought CT is in USA.

I later asked about whether the Honda factory warranty was good and this was the reply (it is a bit unclear to me whether the question was answered):
"We provide a third party warranty valid through any Honda Service center in
america. We are a US car broker. Every Honda is made in Canada."
I sent another email asking if the gauges were in metric or not. The number for sales is is (323) 463-9800 if you are interested in following up. BTW, i see they also ship from LA, so your shipping costs might not be tood bad. (I have not received a quote on shipping costs from them).
To my humble opinion I think factory warranty is important, extended warranty is not worth the money to purchase. If I ever got a lemon Odyssey by any chance, I will find out before the factory warranty expires. Also according to raybear's posts I could get a Odyssey in LA @ MSRP. I think I will pass it based on the following thoughts.
1. We are talking about $450 saving right here vs. no factory warranty. MM? Maybe the 3rd party warranty is as good as factory, but I don't like to find out if I got a lemon and got stranded at Honda dealer.
2. No re, no doc processing. They show a eEscow @ bay, but you have to pay $75-$95 for the service I didn't go back to eEscow to verify the actual fees. I don't have time to get a SMOG certificate then to local DMV to get it done. I don't like to go to any DMV in LA area, too much traffic and full of people. That's why we pay a new car dealer to do it for us.
Those are my two cents. Your situation may be different than mine.
Regards.
Is it Spreen Honda in Loma Linda? Did you get a EX or LX? How long did you have to wait for your Odyssey?
Thanks,
bjk
Their allocations are higher than most so availability is good there. Good Luck!!
I also wanted more features than the Honda offers on this model.
I would never pay MSRP for any car. With the Honda being so hot, I was able to get a Dodge ES at invoice.
i'll take your advice and stay away.
First, as mentioned in numerous recent posts, the US Honda warranty is not valid. Thus, folks that deal in this market typically add a third party warranty. IMHO this isn't the same--particularly since most US Honda dealers won't look kindly on the fact that you bypassed them to purchase the Canadian model.
Other significant concerns include the fact that the vehicle must be "retitled" (regardless of what the dealers say, I view this as "used"). Also, the speedometer / odometer must be replaced (kilometers vs. miles). At least in NC, this must be noted on the title. I would expect this would significantly impact resale. I know I would shy away from a used vehicle whose odometer had been replaced.
Bottom line, I needed to see used vehicle pricing for me to even consider this alternative and since I was only seeing marginal price breaks, I walked.
Of course, I'm not in any hurry. At this point I'm still waiting to put money down. Trying to decide whether to go with an '01 in a color that is not our first choice, place an order for an '01 and risk that it won't ever be built (most local dealers have already received and/or allocated their '01 allotments), or put money down on an '02 (particularly since we're favoring leather and it looks like there will be some new color options).
Luck to all!
One state (Washington) is trying to solve that problem, by having the State Police certify the kilometers at changeover, so that the buyer can then add the km (converted to miles) to the miles on the speedo. Nusiance, but might work.
The warranty is simple--there is none. American Honda will not honor any factory warranty on Canadian models, nor sell you an extended. That's why the importers of Canadian units always include a third party warranty. Those are like K-Mart Specials--after you wait a day or two for the warranty company to OK the repair, you then wait for the repair, and usually have to pay a deductible per repair. My daughter had a good 3-party and they did replace the tranny at 45,000, but it took 2 days to get them to OK it, a day to get it towed to the dealer, and 3 days for the dealer to do the work. Her deductible was $100 and she had to rent a car for a week, at $25 per day. There's no such thing as a free lunch.
I recommend that you stick with USA spec units and save lots of hassle.
The price is okay, but what do delivery fees run? Say to Los Angeles. Just curious.
Tim:
Can your Odyssey be registered as new? Do you provide vehicle registration service? Do I need a Smog cert for Ca?

I began by going to the Honda web site and gathering the email addresses (or fax numbers) of about 30 dealerships within a 4 hour drive of my house near Knoxville, TN. I simply requested each dealership's best price on a 2001 LX. I received a response from 20 of them. Most just quoted the MSRP of $24,340. Some were above MSRP and a few were below. The lowest price was $24,000 which was quoted by two dealerships. One of the "low-bidders" was actually $233 cheaper than the other because there were no "customer service fees" or other dealer add-ons. However, because the other low-bidder had been the first dealership to respond to my request and had continued to follow-up, I offered them the chance to match the price. They actually agreed to not only match the price, but even go slightly lower! The final out-the-door price was $25,500. Here are the exact numbers:
2001 Odyssey LX - $23,772.10
Customer Service Fee - $168.70
TN sales Tax (6%) - $1,439.32
Local/Business Tax - $87.88
TN Tag and Title - $32.00
Total Price - $25,500.00
(I think it's funny that they still included a "customer service fee" but lowered their price on the van to make up for it!)
We paid a $500 deposit for the van which arrived 3 weeks later. The deposit was applied towards the cost of the van so we owed $25,000 when we went to the dealership. There were no surprises and everything went very smoothly. The dealership is Honda Morristown (located in Morristown, TN, a city 45 minutes northeast of Knoxville). I was willing to drive 4 hours from home for a good deal, but ended up only having to travel a little over an hour (past two large Honda dealerships that absolutely refused to work with me at all). I'm sorry if this sounds like a commercial, but it was nice to actually find a Honda dealer that acted like they wanted my business! I hope you find this helpful and that you will get an even better deal than I did. Good luck! This van is worth the effort! We have had ours for two weeks and really like it!
I have read other posts who have used a similar method, but have made an explicit offer.. which is better, making an explicit offer vs. saying "give me your best price".
thanks, and congrats on your painless purchase.
2001 EX $24,354

Just that easy and over $2,000 less than MSRP. To round out my purchase I bought an extended warranty 7/100/0 for $925 from a Honda dealership in Delaware, and $550 in optional accessories from the web sites that I will install myself.
Our sales person was the best and again, no pressure to add options.
All of this worked out because of patience and alot of research utilizing Edmunds.com reviews and this chat room. Thanks everyone!
I live just outside Atlanta, but no one in the metro area would even negotiate. Atlanta is one of the hot Odyssey areas. Got mine for $200 below MSRP, plus $1800 for the Honda entertainment center, and $250 for Doc fees.
The dealer claims that we got a really great deal and that he probably would not sell another one at that price. Therefore, I will not name the dealership. I will say that is was within a 2 hour drive of Atlanta and it was not in Georgia.
I think that if people make the phone calls, they can find less than MSRP within a reasonable drive of Atlanta. I got first quotes of MSRP from a dealership in Savannah, and another in Tifton. With the 2002 looming on the horizon, July & August may be excellent times to pickup a 2001 Odyssey.
The Van is great so far. I have already posted on the other boards that the stereo really does suck.
I had a strange problem with the power doors yesterday. It was raining so I had my lights on. I went to pickup my son at Day Care, and decided to see if the lights would really shut off automatically. I was gone about 2-3 minutes and they did shutdown. However the power doors would not open. I had to turn the doors off and open them by hand. By the time I made it home the doors were working again.
Otherwise, everything else works great.
We have had for five months now with no problems. We really like the van and feel that for a van there is no comparison. Really like the Toyota Highlander though.
Diamond
Although we live much closer to Chapel Hill, we bought ours from Greensboro, since they could deliver the van in 3 weeks as opposed to 3 months. This was last September for our 2001 EX-N.
However I take the van to Chapel Hill for service.
Hope this helps...
Thanks...
Just wanted to thank everyone for their posts. I just closed the deal on my MB Odyssey EX this morning. Got it for $250 under MSRP. Living in Atlanta, this is a huge deal.
Now its my turn to give some wisdom back:
1. Special "member only" deals are a fantasy. I should have known better, but I pursued them all. AAA, Sam's Club, MilePoint/Automallonline.com. Its a seller's market for the Odyssey, and club membership will get you nowhere.
2. While in concept the MilePoint/automall setup is a good idea, in reality its vaporware. For those who don't know, MilePoint lets you cash in frequent flyer miles in return for discounts at online merchants. Its a very good service -- I saved quite a bit of money when I bought some home entertainment equipment earlier this year.
One of their merchants is automallonline.com, which has member dealers who will sell you at a prenegotiated price. For the Odyssey LX, that price is MSRP. Which actually isn't that bad, given that no one in Atlanta would come within $700 of MSRP. Even better, with MilePoint I could use miles to reduce the price another $500.
Only problem is that every dealer I called -- and that includes pretty much every one of them in GA, SC, AL, and TN -- didn't know about the program, or if they did, said they wouldn't participate.
There was another post from someone who successfully used this program in Brooklyn, NY, so I'm sure it can be done, but I ran into nothing but brick walls.
3. By being persistent yet realistic, I was able to get a deal I could live with. Thanks to another poster from Atlanta who mentioned their deal, I e-mailed Morristown Honda in Tennessee, and got a quote for $26,600 drive-off with August delivery. That's about $500 off of list. This was probably the 12th dealer I spoke to. Almost all dealings were e-mail and phone.
A dealer in south Georgia followed up with me and when I told him about the TN deal, he said he just couldn't match it. MSRP was as far as he could go. He then gave me some very good advice, unsolicited, on ensuring the TN dealer was on the up-and-up. One: make sure I get a Honda order number (and then a VIN number when available). Two: make sure the model number is RL186. Any other model number is a grey market vehicle.
I sent this dealer one last e-mail: If they came down $250, splitting the difference, I would go with them. They had already volunteered to drive the car to Atlanta, and could get one a month earlier. It was worth $250 to me to get the car earlier and not spending 4+ hours driving to and from the TN dealer.
Initially, they refused. The gen. mgr. called me, and I told him I would rather give him my business, but $500 was too much to ignore.
Two hours later, they called back and accepted the offer. I signed the buyer's order this morning.
5. Postscript: After previous conversations with automallonline.com, they called this morning to tell me the very dealer I closed with was willing to work with me and use the certificate. Since the dealer gets back the discounted money from automall, I called them and offered what I thought was a win-win: sell me the car for MSRP less the discount. They would get the discount back from automall, making $250 more than our current deal, and I would save $500 by using frequent flier miles. No deal. They said they wouldn't come out ahead, and despite what automall said, they aren't participating in the program.
One last call to automall. Turns out the dealer pays an advertising fee to automall as well. They wouldn't give me a specific number, but said the extra $250 in profit I was offering the dealer would be pretty much wiped out by the ad fee.

In any case, here's the deal I got:
2001 Odyssey EX MB -- $26,601
Cust Svc Fee -- $249
GA Tax (ugh, 7%) -- $1879
Title & Wty Fee -- $21
Total -- $28,750
--
I hope others are able to learn from my experience like I did from previous postings. Good luck to all in finding your own deals.
