We're looking at an EX and I asked for exactly what tax, tag, & FEES meant.
This dealer installs the protection package (cargo tray in the cargo well, wheel locks, and mud guards) $399 (Apparently $899 retail?)
Pinstripe $55
Dealer Fee $699
The way I see it, that's over $1100 of "padding" built in to the deal. I don't want pinstriping and I could care less about the "protection package"
When I asked specifically about the dealer fee, here's what they said:
"The dealer fee is to cover costs that the dealer incurs. This is like the destination charge and is a non-negotiable cost of doing business."
Am I crazy to think that is the most ridiculous statement?
How about SELLING CARS covers costs that the dealer incurs?
I guess I won't worry about it too much, but I will be negotiating that $699 off the price. Shooting for invoice minus the $2500 minus the $699. Wish me luck.
Any other ridiculous dealer fees out there?
It is nothing more than a way to guarantee that there's some built in profit in the deal. Some states limit the amount dealers can charge. (See Maryland). Other states have no such limit. It's funny how it shows up at Saturn dealers' no-haggle pricing, effectively raising the price.
Bottom line is that it is absolutely negotiable. I have never paid it and have always told dealers that if they have to show it on the sales documents, they can just back it out of the price such that bottom line doesn't change. Never been really challenged on it.
It is all smoke and mirrors at the end of the day.
But you're aboslutely right. And wise consumers don't pay the inflated prices for those "add-on" window sticker items. One dealer told me how i got mud flaps, pinstriping, and floor mats for he $1000 he wanted to charge. When I asked why is he charging for the floor mats when the window sticker shows them as included, he was stumped.
Call it what you want, but accessory charges are another way of making up the money on the deal. In these markets and on these cars, IMO, I wouldn't pay a penny for "accessories." Buy them separately or online and save yourself some coin.
Thankfully the DC metro area has about 10 different dealers. The Maryland dealerships only have a $100 (or less) doc fee and no other dealer addons.
We'll be paying cash + no trade in. The deal we have is 08 EX-L R+N:
Invoice - $2500 - 2% holdback ($716) - $780 (i have no idea) = $28,419
OTD = $31,183
With these discounts, we're debating getting the Touring for only $2800 more.
If you know about the fee, it's just easier to negotiate a price, taking that into account, and knowing they are going to add that fee on at the end...
It's just how they explain it with a straight face that gets me... :surprise:

It cracks me up too.
That's basically what I decided to do. This salesperson seems "sold" on the idea that it was a "non-negotiable" item that would be charged. So, I'll pay it- but negotiated the buying price with that taken into account.
Right now I'm at
$24,399. The other costs involved are:
1.50 battery disposal fee
5.00 tire disposal fee
24.00 electronic filing fee
$599. for the dealer fee.
How's that look for a standard EX?
What should a tag transfer cost me?
I'm leasing so I won't have to worry about tax (except on the payment)- correct?
If you are leasing or purchasing (without honda financing), which is what I am currently doing, you should be able to get the EX for around 24K (dest included). I have multiple quotes at 23900 (which is invoice, minus the $2500 dealer cash, minus the 2% holdaback) plus doc fees of around 150 or so (in NJ). Not sure if the deals are as good down South though.
I found that there are not very many Touring models in the Bay. Talking to dealers it appears that Bay folks do not buy very many Touring therefore the dealers I spoke with do not tend to stock more than a few at a time. At the same time I asked about 09's and was told the 09's would cost approx 4K more than the #'s I was getting on the 08's (not that I believe that based on what happend last year when the 08's came out).
These were quoted with .9 Percent for 36mo.
Lowest Quote W/ Desitnation was $33,900K
Average Quote W/ Destination was 34,500K
Not too many colors to choose from - lots of nimbus and the green/gray color (forgot code/name).
I was struggling with buying 08 vs 09 since we are within weeks of 09's... I figured that since there were not many Touring's at dealers that 09's would quickly (by Nov/Dec) be back in line with 44 to 45K price point. In any event I came very close to buying a Touring but in the end got cold feet (Could not make the practical choice - BIG V8SUV vs Great People Hauling and Fuel Economy Van). Perhap's if 09's were already out and deals were in the same range I would have gone the other way.

This is for a 2008 Odyssey Touring w/o Pax.
Selling Price: $34,750.00
Accessories: $0.00
F&I Products: $0.00
Sales Tax: $2,871.41
Trade Prior Balance: $0.00
Doc Prep Fee: $55.00
CA Tire fee: $8.75
CA New Vehicle Licensing Fee: $291.00
CA County Fee: $10.00
TOTAL PURCHASE PRICE: $37,986.16
I'm happy with that.
I am in NC- and am planning to buy an EXL-RES.
This is the best I got- based on quotes and negotiation w/ several dealers
Sale Price $26,343.53
Destination charge $670.00
Wheel Locks & Mud Guards: $245.00
3% NC sales tax $817.76
processing / doc $399.00
tag & title $69.00
Total OTD $28,544
Questions:
1. Thoughts on the deal Does this sound reasonable? Any specific line items where I can do better
2. Do I really need the mud-guard and wheel locks. The dealer is pushing it?
3. The dealer say says that if I take the Honda financing- the price will go up by $1000. Is that true?
4. What accessory should I push for the dealer to throw in?
5. Do floor carpets and cargo tray come standard on EXL-Res
Would appreciate any inputs that anyone can provide.
Thank so much

BTW, the car turned out great, everything is fine. I'm worry-free now. Thanks for all your answers.
23150 + 670 destination + 199 doc fee = $24019
Employed donkeypunch method. Many quotes in the same general vicinity.
BTW, how was your Sterling MaCall adventure?
Any one want to team up to buy a 2008 Honda Odyssey EX-L in Columbus,Ohio.
Has anyone from SoCal closed deals with a base price between $25,500 to $26,000 (incl destination) i.e excl TT&L.
Appreciate any updates on this forum.

They tried to increase the price by about $800 for a number of accessories they had on the car (Wheel locks, edge guards, tray liner, all season floor mats, and something else that was useless). I asked them to also add the cross bars. Eventually they agreed to include all of this for 31K but I certainly didn't feel like this was a good deal but they were pretty firm on this was as low as they would go.
Then came the Lease discussion. The first offer was for payments of $590 before tax and before tax only fees upfront. After digging through the deatils and many iterations I finally got them down to $449/mo before tax with $2K upfront ($800 fees and $1200 cap cost reduction). Based on what I've read here I'm not comfortable this is a good deal. Here's the details as I understand them.
MSRP - 36,480
Cap Cost after upfront payment - 29,900
Residual Value - .50
Term - 36 months
MF - .00265
My reasoning for not being comforable with this: First, I qualified for 7.25% through Costco on a loan so I know I should be able to get a decent rate. 5 years ago I leased an Xterra and had a .00158 MF and my credit qualifications were much worse so I think I should be able to get a better money factor. Second, I've read repeatedly of people getting .52 to .55 residual value so I think I'm getting short changed there. Third, I also have been hearing of people getting prices of close to 29K so feel like I'm overpaying.
So two questions I'm hoping to get help with. How should I feel about this deal? Am I getting a decent deal or would I be over paying? Second, Can anyone provide some pieces I can use to try to argue this down further. Some tangible things I can refer to as reasons I should get a better deal rather that I just have heard of people getting a better deal.
I'm already thinking of asking them to remove all accessories and buying them after market. I can find them cheaper online anyway. But that will only reduce my payments a little and doesn't change the overall value of the deal.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
I am looking to buy EX-L in next 10 Days in Columbus, Ohio
Please reply back if any one wants to team up.

It went VERY smoothly, as well as one could hope, with no surprises or pressure. Took about a little over 2 hrs. total from test drive to reading & signing paperwork. I'll post a full review later in the dealerships section under Sterling McCall Honda.
As expected: sell price: 27036 + TTL = 28981
(Add $1000 more if financed w/ Honda special APR)
BTW, I hope more people will post reviews (on sales or service) on the dealerships!
Even though there were only a few reviews, it helped me to choose between two places. Besides that, one salesman seemed pushier than the other
(bad vibes).
I spoke with someone at Gillman Ft. Bend and he said Gillman is picking up the cost to promote the 0% APR, as they "really need to move their inventory." Give them a call to confirm this.
Good luck on the group buy. I think a selling price of 26,500-26,600 is not unreasonable.
How many dealerships have you visited before you went to Kingwood?
Please advise if this (week preceding labor day weekend) is the right time to buy an EX-L?
I only see the Mfr finance incentives and do not see $2000 or $2500 off in lieu of mfr financing that Honda offered earlier.
Should one wait? Do you think the earlier offers would be back? :confuse:
Your thoughts Please....

The involves reading tea leaves. Personal guess (I'm a potential buyer) is that with the high inventory of odys the incentives will continue. What I think they may do is close up that 1500 for financing deals and the 2500 for cash deals. I hope they'll add another $250 or $500 to the cash deals.
But I don't expect that they'll simply cancel or substantially reduce the incentives at this stage in the game.
I'm living in Austin, TX. I also have a plan to purchase 08 Odyssey. I'm ready to buy it now. I would like to join your bargain team.
Any thoughts?
I have got a quote from a Honda dealer in Columbus , Ohio for 26236.00
I'am thinking the other dealers will match or drop their price.
Had you used the 2.9 Pct Financing you would have been @ $29,544.
What dealership in NC are you using?
Thanks;

I only visited one other Honda dealership, just to test drive. (Also visited one Toyota)
I'm curious how your group deal went? Please keep posted.
