Where do you find the "All", Bob?

When you enter "TH," select "Owners Clubs" from the pull-down menu; then select "Subaru;" then towards the bottom, select "Display ALL Subaru Discussions in All Boards."

disclaimer: I did not read the TH instructions (yet)!
These are the steps I go through, to get the same display as I'm used in older version of TH:

    1. Login
    2. Scroll to Owners Clubs section
    3. Click View All Discussions (under Owners clubs)
    4. Click on Subaru crew link
    5. See all the Subaru-related discussions, both from Owners club and SUV/Wagons/Sedans boards

another glitch with this new format:

As I've mentioned before, I view the Subaru topics as "Display ALL Subaru Discussions in All Boards." When I (used to) post a message in any of the displayed topic—and when I wanted to return back to "ALL," it would send me back to the default forum, whatever forum that was. Well that's been corrected.

However, now if you post and then "edit" that post, it will still send you back to the default forum. It's very frustrating, because you have to click on several links before getting back to where you want to be in the first place.

Could you post that in the Town Hall Redesign 2002: Tell Us Your Thoughts discussion? The site developer, johnv, has been addressing members' questions, suggestions, and making changes if possible.

    Thanks!

no longer displays all Subaru discussions.

edit: Nevermind. I was clicking Display all under Owner's Club's.

bookmarked before, and am using the same link. I see basically no difference in the topics that come up.

Bob - I did try All Subaru. Kind of a waste land. Saw your (& Mike's) posts on the "Are All New Subi's Terrible", or something like that....
Gave up and went back to the few that I haunt.

General observation: What's with all the "Subaru [model] vs. [your car/truck/SUV/power tool here]" threads of late? The Acura RSX-S v. WRX thread is turning into a real flame war. Honda, VW, Volvo, Saturn, BMW, Audi owners feeling all prickly. Is it the weather or do people just want to come into Town Hall's Subaru fora spoiling for a fight?

Everyone needs to remember that somewhat offensive adage about arguing on the Internet.

I'm not familiar with it, can you e-mail it to me?

The only reason I can think of is that Subie folks tend to stick together, so maybe the others get defensive?

We are operating on a backup server. Hopefully it won't last long.

That explains it. I didn't know Yugo made servers :)

I've got an old Leading Edge Model D with 640k, an RGB monitor and two 5.25" floppy drives you can borrow.

    Hmmm...I haven't noticed any problems...yet.

leaves about a 1 3/8" gray border, left and right on my screen. The net effect being that the Edmunds site is now about 2 3/4" narrower than before!

When the redesign goes live, there will be a discussion in News & Views dedicated for members comments. I'll provide a link when it is available.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Every time I log on I get the new format, and in all cases, I still can't get a full-width screen image!!

BTW, I posted this complaint on the "comment" spot that comes up when I log on. Still, no progress. Very frustrating...

Technically, no. You seem to be stuck in beta-land. If you bookmark a link to http://townhall.edmunds.com/ you will not see the beta site.

beta testing is over, or at least it appears that way. I was hitting the beta site with new.edmunds.com before, and now the regular edmunds.com is facelifted too.

    -Brian
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well mine cuts off the left and right sides. It is IMHO a horrible format.

    -mike
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
on the resolution I think. If you're running 800x600, the side margins aren't as wide as compared to if you were running at 1024x768.

So, at least to me, it appears that they've designed the site with users of 800x600 or lower in mind. Kind of like the chat window too. *shrug*

Hey, check out the new format. I thought something was wrong with my monitor settings when I logged in today. While I do like the more subtle colors, the margins sure look strange on my 21" monitor set at 1024x768.

I've registered my complaints over on the other link Karen provided.

I'm also finding my computer now crashes about 50% of the time when I log on to Edmunds. That never happened before.

Get rid of the gray side borders, and correct whatever it's doing to my computer, and it will be fine.

I like it. I typically run 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 but never maximize the window so the grey side bars are not bad. (about 1/2 inch)
Its faster, I like the colors and fonts. I've noticed no crashes on my pentium 3 machine with IE 5.5x (Win2000)

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
I usually run 1280x1024 or 1024x768. There is an awful lot of gray space in the margins now. Not the most efficient use of space IMO.

I see we have also swapped the ability to scroll backwards and forwards 20 messages with the ability to move to a specific page. Time will tell which is the better format as I usually scroll back based on dates (I guess as to when a post 1000 prior to current may have appeared and work my way forward or back from there).

Edmund's fonts are pretty small on my monitor which is set to 1280 x 1024. Also, not having an auto-resize function (text wrap) sure is a step backwards in my book.

Regarding speed, my initial impression is that it's actually slower now. When I first logged on I thought the application had frozen it took so long.

Ah well, what we do in the name of progress...

Bookmarks don't work for getting to Subaru Crew, spills over on 600x800....

I am not a fan of change for no apparent reason!

Speaking as a designer, I understand what they are trying to do. Designers often joke (but are also serious) when they say "white space" is our friend, because it offers visual relief from all the other (visual) clutter. Here "white space" has just been replaced by "gray space."

Having said that, because there is so much "content" on each Edmunds' page, it is now more crammed together, making it more difficult to digest. This is especially true with long thread titles, which now spill over on to two lines or more, making them more difficult to read, and longer to scroll down.

  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
Please post any observations and comments in the N&V discussion. The designers are supposedly lurking there and taking notes....I really hope that's true.

I saw your post and then promptly forgot about it. :-( I did remember earlier yesterday and fixed Subaru Crew topics here in Owners. Haven't had a chance to do so with the other ones throughout the TH. With the site redesign, the graphic that I was using to link to the Crew community page went away, So that's why the "image" icon was showing.

This forum hasn't been posted to in a while, nor I have I been posting much of late - but there's one thing that needs to be addressed better by the hosts and that's troll control.

In the last month I've noticed a much lower signal to noise ratio on these boards. There are one or two users that can be singled out but the overall tone has become a lot more inflammatory and a lot less informative. I imagine some of the flamers/trolls come from other sites than Edmund's (like the Subaru Impreza-oriented one many of us frequent) and many of them do the same kind of flaming on other boards here as well.

They have been successful to some extent by getting responses and in some cases dragging long-time board participants down to their level.

It may be asking a bit much of the hosts to control this; better perhaps to suggest to the members to do our best to ignore them.

I stopped posting to the guy asking tons and tons of questions about "mods" cause I felt he was asking them for no apparent reason...

    -mike
  • Karen_SKaren_S Member Posts: 5,092
Sometimes its difficult for hosts to recognize the trolls, especially when we monitor so many discussions on various different models. If you could, please send me an email with specific details. Which discussion? Where the suspected activity begins? I will go back and review it. If it is a discussion that resides on a board that I do not host, I will contact that host about your concerns.

However, please understand that if the suspected troll is not violating the Member Agreement, but is just annoying...well...there isn't much we can do. As Ed said, the best defense is to ignore them and move on.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yup, that's what I do. If only to offer the host a heads up to begin tracking actions. One guy in the BMW 5 series thread was using appropriate language, I pointed it out to Sylvia and she took care of it pronto.

    Sure thing...it's linked.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Just wondering if there was a particular reason why some discussions still have "NEW" listed in front of their titles? For example, the "Future's Model II" topic was started back in 2000 and has over 10k posts but is still listed as "NEW". There are even archived discussions that still have the "NEW" flag.

    -Frank P.
  • armac13armac13 Member Posts: 1,129
As I understand it, "New" simply means that there are unread postings - unread by you. I wondered about that for a while.

However, what I'd like to see from Edmunds is that that when you select "View All," that you have a choice to hide all the "Read Only" topics.

Having the "Read Only" topics listed with all the current ones makes reading and scrolling the topic list much too long and cumbersome.
