I don't want to get too much detail. The trick is all in this forum. Just post this massage for your reference to get the better deal. Good luck!
Anyone know why the dealers are making these prices? According to the holdback and 1250 rebate, it would seem theyre losing money. This is obviously not the case I assume. Anyone know what is the missing link?
People act as if there is one crazy dealer in each city who blows these out for thousands less than everyone else.....in my experience once you KNOW the right price you're shooting for in the market (which you already do) you should be able to get many dealers to hit that price or darned close to it......
Sale Price: 31,500
Tax: 2047
License:520
2.9% APR FOR 60 MONTHS.
OTD: 34,067.25
How does this sound? What accessories can I ask the dealer to throw-in?
Thanks
Didn't really do much. Just called the dealer and mentioned my research on edmunds and asked for his best price. he came back with $30,500 and I countered with $30,000, offered to do the deal today and we settled on $30,200. There are definitely some other hidden incentives out there that is motivating these dealers to do deals close to 2300 under invoice.
Thanks to all who helped by posting info (especially hogan773 & 999tang). Overall, am very happy that I got the van for an OTD price that is close to the invoice price. Got the 2.9% APR for 60 months as well.
Thanks to all who contributed to this forum. This has been very helpful.
I live in the Chicagoland area. I am not sure if that matters. I know this is choppy but I think you get the idea.
From the last set of posts it looks like Honda may have reached some weekend sales targets and started to re-price higher. To scttb5732, if you have a quote in this range, I would strongly consider it because on Jan 31st, THE BEST quote I could get on this car was $32,000, and that was at the end of that Sunday in the showroom. You may miss out on what is the LOWEST pricing on these cars in a while.
As to "the missing link", there did seem to be another few hundred dollars available starting over this weekend as mentioned above. The $28,200 for the EX-L was an amazing deal, so I am not sure if the EX-L RES could be had under $30,000. I certainly tried. I hope this helps someone else find a great deal.
Hogan, thanks especially to you for your extensive posting. You did very well. And thanks to all who post because it is so great to see the collective experience, knowledge and final prices paid.
For what its worth, when I bought my car, I spoke with the Finance guy doing the closing and he said that the dealer was actually losing a couple hundred bucks at this price (on the new car).....so I think these are all great prices. They'll probably make something on my trade in, so it all evens out....
As I just said in another post, apparently at this price the dealer is losing a little money on the car itself (and they hope to make it up on your trade in, or when you buy a warranty, or potentially they are just incentivized to move some of these Odysseys thru some soft volume rebates or other hidden something). He claimed that on a Civic or Accord they wouldn't be so far below invoice - perhaps we're all benefiting from the fact that minivans aren't cool.....
Glad to see others are having success - love this forum cause knowledge is power (although honestly we need SOME uninformed chaps out there to buy cars at close to sticker to subsidize our ability to pick off these cars so cheap!!!!)
Invoice 27808
Tax 6% 1668.50
Tags, title, & all other fees 215.65
Total out the door with out any accessories 29695.15
If so, then unless something has changed, no this is not a good price. Several of us just bought EXL-RES over the weekend for about 30k flat, which was more than $2000 BELOW invoice.
There is still 1250 incentives at a minimum, I think, so if I were you I'd keep looking around. Are you using the Hogan system? Why don't you call a few of your less-favorite dealers, maybe ones that are farther away, and just say that you seem to be getting prices at [26,500] and you're looking to buy soon, and you'd be willing to drive to buy from them but only if it gave you a meaningful savings.......you'll see if any hit you with a lower quote than the 27,800 you mentioned.
Anyone else out there who just bought a straight EX - can you post your price? (and IMO its easiest for all to just post the price of the CAR including the 710 destination charge......just giving the OTD price makes it hard to compare apples to apples because everyone's tax rates are different, and while we like to be helpful, other posters aren't going to take the time to whip out the calculator and do the math.....)
$26,600 + 710 (destination) + TTL..
They offered LX at :
$22550 + 710 + TTL
Comparing the two it seemed to me that EX was priced more than what it should be.
This was for Cash offer. I wanted for 1.9% (36 month) but they said price will than be $1250 more.
On edmunds I saw the 1250 incentive dealers are getting for this month.
Mr/Mrs 27,800 - I would go to your dealer and ask them how close to 26,000 they can get because that zipcode is where you'll expect to be buying the car.
I read the comment above where someone got a EX-L w/RES for $30K which is 2K below Edmunds TMV. The quote I have is for 1K below TMV. From where I see none of the dealers seem to willing to go below the quote I have.
What do you guys think?
Oh! BTW this is in bay area and the quote I have is from a dealer 2 hr away!
Thank you.
28258.14 OTD after $1250 dealer cash.
I realize its only $100 difference at the end, but just wondering if that's how everyone else's sales sheets are being written.....
I am glad that we have an active discussion on these pricing issues because it is really helping people save significant $$$. I hope that the next time I buy a new car (won't be for years though) I can find such good real time info.
No offense to Edmunds "TMV", but if you stopped at TMV for the Odyssey right now, you'd be leaving big bucks on the table!
That's how MOST of the dealers are quoting (Not subtracting rebate from the "price").
There are few dealers who sent me quotes with selling price after rebate. But when I asked them "Is this the correct way?". They never replied back
I'm almost ready to buy my new 2010 Honda odyssey.
But, I'm still debating myself, whether I should go for EX w/RES or w/o RES.
I do need RES, but not sure it's worth paying about $1500 premium for factory installed RES. What's your opinion about aftermarket DVD players?
Please help me in making this decision....
Thanks,
Here is why I ultimately decided to go RES.....
1) it is nicely built in....the loader is up in the dashboard. Many of the aftermarkets have the player actually up in the ceiling, so you have to reach around to load it, and probably to adjust things. The RES system is all linked into the stereo so you can play, FF, skip, etc from the dashboard unit.
2) I wasnt excited about some bubba cutting into the headliner and ripping apart the moldings of my BRAND NEW car to install the aftermarket. I'm sure there are very qualified installers out there, but you'd better make sure you have one....
3) WARRANTY WARRANTY WARRANTY. The RES unit will have a minimum 3/36 warranty. If I end up buying a HondaCare extended warranty for 500-700 bucks, my DVD would be covered with that too, potentially out to 7 or 8 years..... I have read some posts of people whose aftermarket players conked out after 1 year.....then what? You need to spend another 500 bucks perhaps to get another one installed.
4) All of the above are real reasons to go with the RES, and in some ways the price I ended up negotiating was lower than what I THOUGHT I'd be paying for a non-RES initially (this is a fallacious argument because of course I could have negotiated hard on a non-RES too....)
5) at the end of the day, its a nice slick install, has warranty coverage, and I finally decided that I am fortunate enough to make enough money to buy the car....do I REALLY care about the potential 500-700 dollar savings, versus the tradeoff of a poor installation, or unit that breaks down, etc etc.
6) only negative I see is that you can get a larger screen in aftermarket....up to 14" perhaps. However, be careful.....as the larger screen may end up blocking nearly ALL of your rearview mirror visibility. I held up a piece of cardboard to simulate a larger screen and I really couldnt see out the back. The RES 9" screen appears to be sufficiently large for viewing in the car, and it doesn't block the rear viz....
I decided to go for it, and I am very happy I did. My kids are even happier I'm sure. I realize its still a novelty as the car is less than a week old, but they are clamoring to go SIT in the car and watch a movie......
I was also debating to get one, seemed 1500 was more for DVD player.
I wish Cars had standardized so that a Snapin DVD players could be bought and installed by owners without installation guys working on it (which add lot of unnecessary costs)
After reading your points and giving much thought, I guess I agree with you.
I'll probably go with EX w/RES. ($28354.00 + TTL - $1250.00 Rebate)
Sorry for coming back but the price $28,200 just trying to understand what other dealer charge are applied.
I was basically running some numbers to as how come your ptice addes up from $28200 to OTD $30421, I am getting diff of $1000 to what you paid.
Price 28200
Destina 0
Tax 1762.5 (MA tax 6.25%).
Reg 350
Rebate (-) 1250
Doc 300
Misc 100 ( other charges i donlt know)
Tot: 29462.5
Are there any big charges missing in my calc which I need to add here?
I'm sure its possible to get a similar installation thru the aftermarket (with a dash mounted DVD player fed to an overhead screen) but quite frankly I got lazy and didn't want to go thru the whole process of trying to figure out 1) a good installer 2) what is a good aftermarket player vs a junky one, etc. There doesn't seem to be a real strong assortment of brand name aftermarket units - Crutchfield has some, Best Buy a few, etc. I sort of wondered after I went through the whole process, how much would I really end up saving to get a nicely integrated install like the factory system.....and even then I'd probably only have a 1 yr warranty at best.
'$1,250 dealer cash available toward the lease or purchase of a 2010 Odyssey. Dealer cash can be combined with Special AHFC Lease/Purchase plan, but cannot be combined with Special AHFC APR Financing.' Let me know if I'm wrong.
I then commented my wife & I would like to talk it over at lunch (he gave us the Odyssey keys).... called 4 other dealerships in OK City & Tulsa for their best offers according to Hogan773's advice. OTD prices given are as follows: $31,620, $31,150, $30,689 & $30,500. Our local dealer matched the best price at $30,500 (only after dropping off the van from lunch and leaving the dealership --we got a call less than a mile down the road with the offer).
At this point we felt we were getting a good deal with the 1.9% 36 mo and didn’t feel like pulling teeth to get an extra $200 or so knocked off. At this interest rate we decided to put no money down and go with it.
Hitman80, yhk81 is correct, you either take the 1.9% 36 mo or the $1250 cash. According to my math, we’d have to find less than 4.5% financing to make the cash back a better deal than the 1.9% dealer rate.
We were quoted $29,535 for EX-L (w/o RES/NAV)...price included dealer installed mud guards and wheel locks for $242 (didn't have a choice here as they were already on the van), plus service fee of $198. Pretty good deal I thought.
Traded our one-owner '05 EX-L w/99,895 miles on it for the '10 EX-L. This was the only point of contention in the negotiation, as I wanted at least $10,500 for the '05, but settled for $10,000.
Overall, good experience at Bergstrom Honda in Oshkosh. In and out of their place in two hours after doing some of the initial price negotiation via email and phone. Sale rep and manager both pleasant to work with.
I can see it'd be nice to throw in a sesame street DVD for a long road trip, but at the same time I don't want my toddlers screaming for a 5 min. drive to the store cause I didn't put a DVD in the tray. Look out the window kids!
Just my 2 pennies
28200 (include destination and rebate 1250) + 1762 (Tax) + 120 (licence)) + 330 (Doc) = 30410.
I heard from other dealership that Honda is offering extra $500 rebate besides $1250.
If anyone want to know the detail, send email to dannyHtang@yahoo.com
I totally agree that if you don't care enough about having in-car DVD, then don't spend the money for the factory OR aftermarket. The original poster question I was addressing was someone who DID want an installed DVD, and was just deciding between OEM or aftermarket. That said, the installed DVD is slick and will be more useful for those times when you do want to play a movie, rather than 1) remembering to bring the portable along 2) unzipping it and then figuring out how to attach it to the back of the seat with its goofy hanging case 3) stringing the cord to the cig lighter 4) pulling to the side of the road to reach around and fiddle with the player when your kid is screaming that its not playing, or they want you to hit FF.
Its of course a splurge to get the installed one, as you "can't take it with you" when you sell the car, but I must have been in the mood to splurge on my family.....even the best cheapskates have their soft moments
As for BluRay thats a whole different thread, but 1) there are still many more DVDs around than BluRay discs and most importantly 2) BluRay is not really noticeable on TVs less than 30 inches, but CERTAINLY NOT on a 9" screen in the car! The existence of BluRay is not a reason to NOT get a DVD player in the car. Cost and/or spoiled kids who will whine incessantly if they're not using the DVD - those are valid reasons.
