I have the 2000 LX, been very happy with it. The major differences between the 2003
    and the 2000 are:
    2003; 240hp vs 205hp on regular gas
2003; all 4 wheel disk brakes, 2000 has rear drums
2003; has traction control, 2000 LX does not.
2003; has 5 speed auto trans, 2000 has 4 speed auto trans.

The 2003 would also be 3 years and 23k newer with a 36k/ 3yr warranty and you could
get an extended HCW for less than $900.
You pays your money and take your choice.

Thanks to all of you for sharing so much info. This site has been very helpful to me. I'm kind of late posting so pls excuse my tardiness :).

Last month, we bought an EX-L with no accessories for $900 below MSRP ($27,790 including destination) from David McDavid Honda in Irving. John Williams, a pleasant young guy was the sales rep. We drove it out for $29,748. A friend and I together bought 2 such vans at the same time which must have helped in the price negotiation. I did my research, visited only this dealer and was satisfied with the deal and the level of service.

Well congrats on the new van, Aj101 (even if congrats are a month late ).

The 2003 will also have side airbags, a much improved sound system and a retune of the susp.system.

Anyone know when the dealers would start taking orders for 2003 Odys?

Also an off topic question, anyone has a link to a picture of 2003 Toyota Sienna? I heard they are going to change the body style on Sienna starting model year '03. Thanks.
  • famov5famov5 Member Posts: 2
Also a little off topic, other than being an alternative to the Ody,...heard Toyota is going to offer a longer version around Jan 2004.

Any word on whether the 2003 will will have memory seats

I want to purchase a light-colored Odyssey EX-L with beige interior - which means the Mesa Beige in the 2002 models. Does anyone know if there will be other color combos in the 2003 that will meet my criteria? I'm ready to buy now but could wait if there will be other combos.

I live in northern VA (outside of DC) and the prices here are exorbitant. My husband wants to pay below MSRP. Can anyone give me a reference to a dealer within a few hours drive that charges below MSRP?
  • hschultzhschultz Member Posts: 42
I think the Ody salesman's name is Les (or something like that). Believe it or not, they only have ONE guy there that can sell Ody's--I know, I know, I couldn't believe I was hearing them right either.

In any event, he was offering $500 off MSRP several months ago. It's not enough for me, as I'm hoping to get (at least) $1,500 off MSRP (or $1,500 over invoice--same difference) when I buy (which prolly won't be until December anyway, when my wife's SUV lease is up.

    Good luck.

aspesisteve and hschultz...it was indeed Crown Honda out of Greenesboro. I started the deal with Steve Weinstein and ended it with Chris Stanford. Both as far as I was concerned were very pleasant to deal with and the deal was as right as rain. I pick up my Odyssey today from my local dealer...well below what they were offering (-$800).

I'm not pushing any dealer, it's just that these guys were very good to me and because of them I am driving an Odyssey and not a Caravan. They shipped it to me from NC to Colorado...no extra charge. Definite plus for the internet and this board.

    Good Luck with your hunting.
  • strizvstrizv Member Posts: 8
I called Chris at Greenesboro Honda. You're correct, very pleasant to deal with. I wanted to get clarification from you on one point. You said your price was 800 below MSRP, "after all fees and such".

Chris' initial offer to me is $500 below MSRP for the vehicle, but there is the doc and processing fee of $289.70. I believe this is a normal fee.

That would bring my total cost to: $27,210 - 500 + 289 = $26,999. Local sales taxes here in WA and licensing are separate and don't need to be considered.

Your post seems to indicate you purchased your van for $26,410 with all fees included. Is this correct?

    Thanks so much!!
  • raseeleyraseeley Member Posts: 8
strizv - I got my Odyssey for $800 off total. This was after the fees and such. I had an initial offer from Little Apple Honda in Manhattan KS for $500 off and their fees were very nominal if I remember correctly. When I talked to Chris about this is when they kicked the price down some more. But yes my total cost (without taxes and tags) was in that final price range you gave.

    Good luck.

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good dealer in the San Diego area for the Odyssey that will do MSRP?
I called a couple of dealers, one was asking
$2,000 over MSRP, and the other was MSRP but
with a 4-5 month waiting list.

I guess I'd be willing to drive up to LA if necessary.

I'll keep asking locally, just wondering if anyone has gotten a good deal recently.

    Thanks,

    Arul

    Arul,
I think you can check with Anderson Honda in Palo Alto, CA. He was asking around $25,200 for LX.
  • arul_ananthaarul_anantha Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the info on Palo Alto jeepvan. It's
a bit of a drive from San Diego though.

I tried all the San Diego dealers, best I could
do over the phone was $500 over, or MSRP with
a very long waiting list. Looks like the
dealers in the Los Angeles/Riverside/San Bernadino are a lot more reasonable, so I guess I'll be taking my business up there.

    Thanks,

    Arul

I, too, am trying to work a deal with Crown Honda (Chris and Matthew). But I'm having a little concern with their charges. Sure, I'm happy with the $500 off MSRP offer, and we all would like better. Last week that -$500 price included $289.70 doc&processing fee + $56 for title&reg + 6% Florida tax for a total of $28,658.30. Now, today, when I'm trying to finalize the sale, they come back with $190.85 for title&reg for a new total of $28,793.15.
I asked what the doc&proc fee includes, and I get different answers ("title fees," "DMV fees," "dealer prep" - which is odd since it's being shipped to me directly from the factory). But I am assured that every dealer charges this, and Crown is right in the middle of the charge. But then I look at what Edmunds says we should pay, and here are the four charges:

    1) Destination charge
    2) Sales tax
    3) License and registration fees (DMV fees) vary from state to state. These fees are usually from 1 to 3 percent of the purchase price of the vehicle.
    4) Reasonable documentation fee ($50 is reasonable; $250 is not)

As you can see, strivz, Crown's $289.70 doc fee is beyond the unreasonable.

So, I'm still looking and hoping, because I don't think I'm getting Crown's best effort.

Arul, I've seen San Diego dealers sell at MSRP, did you try the internet departments?
  • ajt64ajt64 Member Posts: 2
Does a Honda dealer in Iowa have to accept delivery of a Odyssey purchased (for a discount off MSRP) through a dealer in North Carolina that has the van shipped directly from the factory to a customer in Iowa?
The Iowa dealer receiving the van receives part of the destination charge for receipt and inspection of the incoming van from the North Carolina dealer. The transaction paper work goes Fed Ex, only between the Iowa customer to the North Carolina dealership.
I just do not want to get in some controversy with my local Iowa dealer that will not sell below MSRP. The North Carolina dealer (Crown, Greensboro) is really looking for the extra business.

    Thanks

    Raybear,
Thanks for the info. I did fine one dealer that
does MSRP (and has been doing so for a long
time) in San Diego, but their waiting list is fairly long.

I'll keep looking around. The dealer I spoke
to in the Loma Linda area today was pretty friendly though, so I may make the trip up there instead.

The best I've been able to do with Chris Stanford is $600.00 below MSRP and I live here in Greensboro. Just a little word to the wise... I make it a habit of questioning people driving Honda Odysseys in the area and the typical response was they love the vehicle, but all had negative responses towards Crown Honda. They are known for the additional fees tacked on just before closing the deal. I guess they are trying to boost sales via the Internet because of the bad rap that have locally.... I just thought you should know.

BTW... Check out post 2308. I called John Williams at David McDavid in TX and he will honor the $900.00 off MSRP with no additional charges.

Arul, I haven't talked to Spreen Honda in ages, good luck, they have sold at MSRP for me in the past. I wouldn't go all the way up there unless they guaranteed the price first.
  • ajt64ajt64 Member Posts: 2
Is John Williams @ David McDavid Honda offering $900 off MSRP and willing to have the vehicle shipped direct from the factory to another dealer out of state (like the Crown Honda deal)?
Did he quote any doc fees?
I left him a phone message today.
    Thanks,

I have been back and forth several times with dealers in the Baltimore region and have a firm price of $700 off MSRP plus shipping for an EX cloth. Jennifer is the sales manager at Schaffer and Strominger Honda in Bel Air. Very helpful and honest. I am still waiting (actually wife is waiting) for the right deal (maybe $1000 over invoice). I stopped by this evening and saw they have one EX for sale (their demo/test drive vehicle) but it has some add-ons. They also had 3 new Pilots on the lot, one was black with leather and DVD. All 3 were for sale at MSRP, no add-ons. Hope this helps you.
  • hschultzhschultz Member Posts: 42
Pls let me know when/where/if you find that price. I'm looking for an EX-L with Navi (will add RES after-market if both not available on the same Ody for '03) and am willing to pay $1,250 over invoice. Planning to purchase in December '02.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Not terribly likely. Would you do it if you were a dealer? Most of my dealers who ship cars send them directly to the customer.
  • raseeleyraseeley Member Posts: 8
    Hey guys,

I don't know what deals you are working, but I just posted so that you could see that there are other options rather than just your local dealer. I saw so many out there, especially in California that were being robbed, that I figured I would share.

As to the comment about Crown locally, I have no idea as I live in Colorado and I didn't see any of the stuff that you talk about in my deal. Also my post on here was strictly informational so I don't see them trying to gain more business on the internet, at least not that I've seen. I missed the posing post that I have heard tale of before but again my experience was quite nice.

As for the Iowa deal, I don't think local dealers would be too put out, but I could be wrong. The Odyssey has been such a wait for all of us ordering it that you could have moved from NC or Hawaii for that matter and now live where you do. My local dealer didn't seem to have a problem with it at all. In fact they asked me what my deal was and said there was no way they could match it here. "Congratulations on that deal", I think their sales guy said to me. Besides do you really care what your local dealer says if they can't cut you a deal. They are obviously having no problem selling the Odyssey otherwise they would cut you a deal.

That is why this medium is so strong. I never could've received my deal locally. The internet and earlier posters showed me an option. Take it if it is available. Good luck.
  • scubieconscubiecon Member Posts: 8
You're correct, Crown only is an option. Yours worked out well, but that may not hold true for everyone. I only stated what they have told me during my negotiations. If they gave you $800 off MSRP and did not charge you the $289.70 doc&processing fees, then they gave you an excellent deal. They just aren't offering that to me.
  • raseeleyraseeley Member Posts: 8
No worries about the Crown deal. I hope you can find something somewhere if it doesn't work out with them. I liked my deal with them, but honestly I just wanted to share how pleased I was about the option of having a dealer from out of state send me a van when the guys locally were out to lunch. I believe I did get a good deal with Crown and Chris. I hope you will find one somewhere else if not there. Good luck to you and happy hunting.
  • scubieconscubiecon Member Posts: 8
Maybe I will give Little Apple in Kansas a try. What the heck. I've only got about 30+ inquiries out there. My head is starting to spin.

Was Little Apple willing to ship to you as well?
  • aspesisteveaspesisteve Member Posts: 833
I got my GG EX-L with DVD for MSRP.
The only drawback was a 90 mile drive to Lodi, CA (Twice!); once to put the deposit on it
before it hit the lot and 10 days later to pick it up. No hassel pricing from nice people over the phone.

I found after putting my specific needs out to about 10 different dealers, I got regular calls
back from about 3-4 dealers who notified me when things were either on the lot or in transit.

It was tempting to order one from back East, but I'm just happy my search is over to tell you the truth.
  • raseeleyraseeley Member Posts: 8
I feel for you. I was there too. After the grueling local search I sent stuff all over the country. I had inquiries from Washington to NC and just about everywhere in between. Hang in there, something will come through. You may need to do some educating as Crown was the only one who even thought to have it delivered at my local shop.

Little Apple would send it to me but for $250. I don't think they knew they could do the courtesy delivery thing. They were talking about taking delivery there and then hauling it out to me. Or I could've picked it up there, an option for me since I am just a little ways away. That's the scoop on that. Good luck and let me know if you get what you're looking for. Take care.
  • jalhjalh Member Posts: 11
Thanks for the suggestion brunna. That's the best deal that I've heard about in this locale so I'll give Jennifer a call. I'm also checking with McDavid and Crown (Crown seems to be getting a lot of referrals from raseeley's posting in this chat room!). I really appreciate all suggestions and am relieved to find that there are some alternatives to the high prices near me.
  • cass3cass3 Member Posts: 3
2 dealers mentioned on these boards before are:

Dennis & Alex at Mendo-Lake Honda in northern CA (800-287-6727) - $645 for the 7/75/0 Honda Care warranty
    and
Tracy McCrystal at 800-264-3275 charges $655 for the 7/75/0 . She charges $875 for the 7/100/0.

i called both (no problem that i didn't buy the car from them) - very easy, they send you the forms you send them back. this is for the hondacare - my dealer kept saying it must be an aftermarket company but it is the real thing. saved me a ton on warranty for my new odyssey - my dealer started at $2000 for the 6/100 with a $50 deductible (the two above are for $0 deductible) and the lowest he'd go was $1150...
  • jalhjalh Member Posts: 11
I've followed all of the leads that I've recently read here with disappointing results: Chris at Crown said that former internet manager was fired for discounting cars too much, so now will only offer $500 off MSRP; Jennifer at S&S in Bel Air said she's never made a deal at $700 off MSRP and quotes MSRP only (still attest to her honesty brunno?); McDavid will deal but said he's unable to locate local dealers who will agree to receive & prep Odys bought thru his dealership, and so suggests you pick up vehicles at dealership(kinda far for me)or give him name of a local dealer who will accept vehicle bought from him.

I asked Crown what happens if vehicle is damaged when go to pick it up from local dealer and was told that the buyers only recourse would be to have it serviced under warranty. Of course, I'm not sure that helps if the vehicle is dented or has some other physical damage. Crown implied that buyer would still be obligated to accept the vehicle. That's not acceptable to me.

Anyone got any other viable suggestions for someone living in the DC metro area (VA/DC/MD)who's willing to travel a couple of hours to get the best price?
  • aspesisteveaspesisteve Member Posts: 833
why would anyone opt to buy an extended warranty on a new car?
why not wait at least until the car nears the end of the factory warranty?

I've read the fine print on some of these warranties and they are really terrible value from
what I've seen. Plus the fact that it's a Honda makes it even harder to justify.
  • jmurman42jmurman42 Member Posts: 675
I hear of the stories from S&S in BelAir. This dealership gets only 7 or 8 Odys per month, and yet we have people that drive down here from BelAir and SWEAR that they are being told they can have deep discounts on Ody's.

Seeing is believing...actually BUYING is believing!

Anyone found any dealer around SoCal for less than MSRP? I am looking to pay less than MSRP on Ody. I found few that is offering MSRP, but I want to pay less as that's what some people are getting now.
Also, should I wait for 03 model as it's already June? When does 03 come out? Is the pricing gonna be about the same as 02?
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
I take it you don't buy life insurance either.
  • ssinwellssinwell Member Posts: 14
Several dealers in SoCal are willing to sell the EX-L at MSRP, but along with that deal comes a "protection package", which adds about $1,500 or so to the base MSRP price. Looks like the dealers are getting the "protection", and I am getting the "package". This package includes a wheel locks, mud flaps, cargo something and maybe some other garbage. All dealer add-ons...

Question: Is it unrealistic for me to acquire just a plain old EX-L at MSRP without any extras?
  • aspesisteveaspesisteve Member Posts: 833
yea I have life insurance....tons of it (term)
a new car come with a warranty, why buy the extended plan while under warranty?
    huh?

Anyone know how long I can wait to pick up my Odyssey after it hits the lot. They have my $1,000 deposit and want the balance when I pick it up. I was hoping to sell my existing car on my own to save a few grand. How long can I expect them to hold the car on their lot? Is net 30 acceptable? I know the lot wants their money now, but how long can I string this out?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I tend to agree and have never gotten an aftermarket warranty - but I also prefer buying cars with a longer drivetrain factory warranty as my last two cars did (7/70 and 5/60). I also have no life insurance (no kids, spouse has great resume, why bother?).

By purchasing the extended warrenty now, I got a lower price than if I waited and you also get a few more goodies such as a loaner car that you do not get under the basic.
  • dchoppdchopp Member Posts: 256
You better go out and buy the extended warrenty. Do you have any Idea how much funerals cost? I buried my Dad last year and the no frills funeral cost $9000 and he had the plot and stone. Good thing he had the extended warrenty .
  • sbpceapsbpceap Member Posts: 67
I agree that extended warranties are usually not a good value. We must keep in mind, however, that the Honda Odyssey reliability is only ranked average or below average, depending upon the year, since its redesign in 1999. Maybe that's why the cost of the Odyssey extended warranty has kept going up. Because Honda's cars have been above average in reliability, we trust (key word here is "trust") that Honda's van is also above average. Wishful thinking won't change the facts, nor history. So if worry free driving (if there is such a thing) is one's goal, I would reluctantly have to consider purchasing an extended warranty on an Odyssey, especially if I could get it around $645 as listed in post #2339, above. Good luck to all, whatever you decide.
  • odd1odd1 Member Posts: 227
I looked at Edmunds TCO and took out scheduled maintaince, tires, and oil changes from the average maintaince cost and then looked at it as an insurance policy costing just a few hundred not $700-1000.
  • jalhjalh Member Posts: 11
To those of you who have purchased your Ody far away and had the selling dealer deliver it to you locally: How did you handle the possibility that the vehicle might be damaged (scratched, etc.) when you went to pick it up? Were you required to take delivery of the vehicle even if it arrived damaged?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Danny, I got some small discounts in SoCal last week, but inventories are still light and I wouldn't count on a repeat. MSRP is definitely a possibility, easier to get on the high end DVD and Nav cars, and the low end LX.
  • kalajiankalajian Member Posts: 43
The dealer won't ship you the car unless you have already paid for it. Any problems in the paint work or related to manufacturing defects would have to be handled as a warranty repair.
  • ohloneohlone Member Posts: 55
I'm a strong believer that the majority of build quality and mechanicle problems will like occure while the car is under warranty. The stuff that happens later on is either due to normal wear or abuse. And Honda has a pretty good track record.

But don't take my word for it:
Consumer reports doesn't recommend an extended warranty. Those who do are usually the salesman who reep huge commissions from such items.

If you're a big worry wart and it brings you piece of mind, then go for it. But to compare an extended warranty to life insurance is a lame scare tactic. Save your money - don't do it. You're better off spending it on repairs or maint. that are likely not covered by the warranty in the first place.
  • jalhjalh Member Posts: 11
Thanks for the response kalajian. Has anyone actually had a problem at delivery with a Ody bought out-of-state but delivered locally? If so, what was the problem and how was it solved?

I've gotten my best price quote from a distant dealer so this is really tempting for me.I'm just worried about having a problem with the vehicle at delivery, like the vehicle having scratches or some other type of exterior damage. Kalajian says that it would have to be taken care of under warranty. But the vehicle isn't warranted for that kind of damage is it? Has anyone had such damage repaired under warranty?
