Is the salesperson mentioned the Internet Sales person? Did you contact the internet guy first OR just walk onto the lot and got a randomly assigned salesperson? Would you suggest I just show up there, or attempt some advance conversation? Thank you!

I paid $3,003 under sticker. Oddy 2003 EX-L RES. $27,303! I responded to an ad from a dealer in Lawrence MA. Very nice people. The ad listed the VIN # of the car. Basically, one van at that price. I was lucky enough to get it. (I was to take delivery the next week from another dealer on a EX-L silver for $200 under list).
I added fogs 799. leather wrap steering wheel 169. Cargo area plastic tray/mat, door guards, fenderwell trim, mud guards, privacy cover for back well ... they tossed in free pinstripe.
Very pleased with car. Kids love the DVD.
I bought the heavy quality floormats from weathertech.com. Highly recommend.

After looking over all the messages on this board, I feel very bad on my Ody since I didn't get a good deal like everybody has. I often stopped by the Honda Dealer around DFW area, I saw many of 2003 Ody on the lot. Many dealer agents called me to offer a good deal on 2003 Ody(Obviously, the price is cheaper then the one I paid!).

So learn from my mistake people, don't hurry on buying Odyssey. Am I stupid or what? I hate to admit that I am.

Congratulation to people who did the homework very well on purchasing the Ody.

Well, look on the bright side - the Odyssey doesn't depreciate as fast as most other vans, so you didn't leave that much money "on the table" when you take a longer term view. Enjoy the ride!

Well after 10 years driving a 1993 Mercury Villager GS minivan, it is time to upgrade. A recent service visit for 150K miles indicated that about $2000 would fix the power steering and oil leaks. I decided it is time to research new vans for the family.
Hats off to Edmunds.com and all the folks who take the time to post information for researchers such as myself.
I have been looking at the Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. I prefer the Odyssey, but the limited supply and limited price negotiation is a sticking point with me.
I've been using the internet to reseach and reach out to dealers. So far I have one offer of $700 off MSRP for a 2003 Odyssey EX - $26,660 in Harrisburg, PA.
Toyota has promotions in effect until 12/2 which may provide some significant discounting of Sienna LE which is the other vehicle I am considering.
Heading to Honda dealership tonight. Wish me luck.
I don't mind waiting for an Odyssey, but a $2000-3000 difference in price may put me in a Toyota (I am okay with Toyota quality - my other car is a '98 Camry CE).

Staten Island Honda has a crummy web site. When I purchased my Odyssey, I went in person. (I thought my deal was hot stuff, but I see that lately others have been doing even better! Great going, folks!!!) I was randomly assigned salesman Eric Tisdale. I made my offer (which was more than $1200 below MSRP after crossing out bogus dealer extra charges, eliminating demand to finance thru them), and then left my card. I was called the next day, and offered same discount off LX or EX. For more detail, see post #2811, 2815, and 2830. Print them out and tell them that you want the same or better deal. If they don't remember any of us, or deny it, you can email me. Anybody who pays MSRP or above these days is simply not doing their homework. Make your offer, leave your card, and walk. You'll get a call. Good luck.

I had all the townhall postings and private email advice from sbpceap (Thank you once again) and directly approached Eric Tisdale. I was firm with my offer and didn't show him any of this stuff though. You might want to consider calling dealership and talk to some other salesman and find out what they might have on their lot and their brooklyn warehouse though (it worked for me very well). Eric is off on tuesdays and works until 6PM on 3 out of 4 weekdays and until 9 over the weekend, I would just recommend directly approaching Eric. Please feel free to email me if you would like any additional information.

I appreciated all the stories of people buying their Odysseys while we were shopping for ours, so I am going to return the favor and share our story here.

We went to 3 dealers. First, there was only one on lot, so we left thinking there was little negotiating power.

Second dealer was Goodson North in Houston. They told my husband a grand over msrp. Obviously we left there too.

Third dealer (Russell and Smith) offered us 26,990 & TTL for a white ex-l. They also offered us 3.9% financing thru Honda. The last wild card was our trade-in and we haggled over that, but finally got what we wanted. Other than the waiting around with 2 small children, it was pretty painless.

We told the finance guy about our experiences at the other dealers and he said that they had extra Odys on the lot and that is why we got that price. Once only a few were left, the price would go back up.

We would have tried to shop using the internet, but because we had a trade-in we though that would have been difficult.

Hope this can help anyone else looking to buy. I definitely felt empowered hearing everyone else get their prices. BTW, I did most the talking and negotiating!

thanks, i am waiting for an email reply from them. btw i am getting email quotes from jay honda in OH of $29308 on a nav and $27512 on EXL.

I have searched high and low for the best deal on the Ody's, as you all have done. Most of the prices I see are for the EX models. Has anyone been given a better price than $24,500 "out the door" for the LX model? I have been researching for several months and not sure how much more research I can do!! I agree with Oddys_fan's comment and feel that with the changes to the 2004 Sienna, Honda will have to become competitive with their prices or risk losing market share. Thanks to all that have shared their "prices" in helping with my Odyssey research and hopefully, purchase.
  • oddys_fanoddys_fan Member Posts: 2
Yes, the best deals are in EX models. However, you can try negotiating to at least half way between invoice and MSRP. In case of LX, the difference between invoice and MSRP is around $2400. So anything <=$1200 above invoice is a good deal. Try getting quotes through internet/phone (it's less stressful this way rather than making a visit to get a quote). Also try all the dealers(how big or small they may be) within your drivable radius.
  • oddys_fanoddys_fan Member Posts: 2
I found it very helpful and I think future buyers would benefit from my experience.

Put effort wisely to get the best deal. Be patient, not eager. But, whatever deal you got, be happy after purchasing. Odyssey is a great car! You will love it like I do. Good Bye.

Just joined the board. Where does this thread begin? I noticed you mentioned Jay Honda which is nearby so I am very interested if you found a dealer will to go $2300 below sticker.

njswamplands - do your Jay Honda OH quotes include destination as stated? Thanks!

I've been tracking this site for some time. Since the '99s first came out. But Infrequent poster, obviously. Just "canned" a Grand Caravan ES (53.6K miles and problems too major and numerous to count .... OK 14 trips to service bays) for a Sage EX-L w/DVD. Less than 200 miles on her so far. Delivered T'giving Day to my house. Yes, that's right, my house on Turkey Day.

I electronically petitioned about 10 dealerships in SoCal. Got 1 response willing to conduct negotiations via email. Great experience.

I was expecting MSRP and that's what I got. But I also got service and no haggling about delivery or unwanted add-ons. I made it clear up front I wouldn't tolerate such games and I wanted this to be cash and carry. That's what I got.

Took about 2.5 weeks from the time I first made contact to the van in my driveway. I got emails almost daily on the progress of it's trek across the country.

In passing I asked where I could get a huge bow for the day of delivery. Next email asked me "what color". No charge.

It came in as promised. I went to look. No surprises. But Sage is darker than I thought it would be. Mentioned I would like to have mud guards. Bonnie said she would take care of it and had them in-stock. Again no-charge.

Delivered on Tukey Day as promised to my delighted and surprised spouse with a big bow on the front. I tipped Bonnie and her daughter .... who made the delivery.

    Now....what was that experience worth?

And because I know you'll ask:
Call or email Bonnie at Villa Honda in Hemet, CA.

I am the proud owner of a new Sandstone EX-L. The best I could do in the San Diego area was MSRP. I contacted 4 dealers and all offered MSRP through their 'Internet' department. I did happen to get a glance at another Ody deal that was just completed for MSRP +$1500.

I could not locate (in stock) the color and model I wanted so I placed deposits at several dealers who were expecting one to arrive in the next few weeks. One dealership (Poway Honda) went the extra step to find the model I wanted at a dealer in LA and swapped a brand spankin' new Pilot for our Ody. No extras or presure to buy extras on signing. Overall a great experience. I also picked up the 7/100/$0 warranty for $1040.

BTW: I LOVE IT! Powerful and smooth.

We're expecting another baby in July 03 and presently love the Odyssey but will try to wait until the new 04 Sienna comes out. Also heard that the Odyssey will be changing in 2004 so we might wait for that one too! Otherwise, the deciding factor is size. The current Sienna is too small and cost about the same as the Odyssey. We did go to two dealers (Concord Honda, Walnut Creek Honda)in Bay Area and they were willing to do MSRP. We do not want to get a model that will change in less than a year. Not a good thing if your spending >30K and making payments for 5 years. My brother-in-law bought a 2002 Infiniti QX4 6 months a go for 42K and is now tired of it because it looks too much like a Pathfinder. He also bought it at the end of the cycle. I think unless you can get a great deal on a 2003 Odyssey, it's better to wait for the new Sienna or Odyssey. They're both great cars. For me now, Odyssey does offer more room and power, 240 hp. Thanks.

I received a quote of $27900 for the '03 EX-L with leather from Cleo Bay Honda in Killeen, Tx today. The salesperson said if I got a lower quote to let him know and he would sharpen his pencil so I gave him $26900 to think about. Tomorrow is another day. Beechnut2

Just got a quote for Odyssey EX with mud flaps and wheel locks for $26,500.

Earlier in the day, I got a quote for $26,500 with no options.

Yesterday, got a quote for $27,050.

Couple of days before that I got a quote for $27,500.

    The MSRP is $27,360.

I would think, based on "Edmound's" writings, I might eventually be able to get it for 3% above invoice, i.e. $25,402.89. (But when stupid people are willing to pay over MSRP, it makes it hard for all the rest of us.)
  • njswamplandsnjswamplands Member Posts: 1,760
did you phone them or email them. i have emailed them several times and have not received a reply. i have been in contact with jay honda in OH, dennis, and he has been a dream to deal with via email and very competitive prices...
  • beechnut2beechnut2 Member Posts: 2
Today I received a quote of $26585 base price for the EX-L with leather from Russell & Smith Honda Ford in Houston. The MSRP base price is 28400.
    Shipping is $460.

I am currently shopping for a 2003 EX-L in the Atlanta area. I asked one dealer here about getting the NAVI and he advised me not to spend the extra $2000, but to buy a system at a local electronics store later for less. Is he telling me this just because the NAVI's are harder to find? Has anyone found a good price in or near Atlanta?
  • balajip44balajip44 Member Posts: 4
from which dealer did u get quote for $26,500(860 less than msrp, that is).
also, did u find any better deals yet?
    good luck....

Bcpage, I think they are trying to fix the "jump to" message number box so it goes to the "real" message number instead of the "virtual" one like it used to.

Did the $24,500 include destination ($460)?
Also, for those who have dealt strictly with internet sales people, were you quoted an "internet discount"? I questioned one sales person about this discount, asking if it would be different (more or less) if I was a walk-in customer. I'm going to try to put a deal together before going to the dealer. I am a serious shopper, but does shopping around this way affect how serious a dealer make take your intentions?
  • cmb70cmb70 Member Posts: 3
To finish my story about the "internet discount", the sales person said the discount would not be any different if I were a walk in customer. I want to bypass the visit dealer and haggle approach. If this is all I'm going to get when contacting dealer via email, what can/should I do to take it a step further?
  • aaa_edgar_poeaaa_edgar_poe Member Posts: 24
I got these quotes from Honda of Riverside, and also from Honda of Anihiem Hills. I have not sought any further prices...yet.

I think prices will have to coem down since: (1) unenployment went from 5.7 to 6%, (2) November auto sales are down, (3) riots in Venezula that has disrupted oil -- they are a large supplier to USA; (4) stock market went down this week that may indicate end of upward thrust of market, and perhpas double dip recission, (5) war with Iraq that might start any second.

Still, I believe Honda is charging dealers too much and they will have to lower invoice. I'll wait the salespeople out since I can go to work on the bus (a very rare thing in Southern California!!), and did take the bus a couple of weeks back ($1 each way!!). The only thing about the bus is I has to sit next to a whine-O! ALso had to sit next to a coughing kid (the germs!!!!). I bought some TB face masks, and might wear that on the bus next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know about buying an Odsy out of state where there is not sales tax and driving it back. I think Oragon or Wasingtin do not have a slaes tax -- not sure whihc one it is. THat would be one way to save $2000. BUt perhpas once you get back to California, the state make you pay the sales tax anyway??? I have heard of people on Califorina flying to LAs Vegas and buying there to save money, but not sure how?
  • njswamplandsnjswamplands Member Posts: 1,760
you can buy out of state and not pay the sales tax but you will need to register it in your state and that is when the sales tax comes back.
  • golicgolic Member Posts: 714
njswamplands is correct, most states have what is known as a use tax. So if you purchase property out of state and bring it into your home state you are required to pay the use tax.

Easy to evade on non-titled property, but on titled property they get you at registration.

Now there is always the set-up of an out of state LLC.... ;)

i like the that but car insurance may get interesting.
  • odysearchodysearch Member Posts: 5
Yes, the $24,500 figure for the LX is the out the door price. This includes all costs. IE: tax, title, destination charges, doc fee, etc. In fact while I was typing this response I have another dealer able to do $24200 out the door. What you you think?
  • jbpehrjbpehr Member Posts: 4
I looked at a Factory Certified 2000 Ody EX today for $23995. The TMV said $22750. It has 37,000 miles. Was this a good year? Should I fork over more dough for a new one? They dont seem to deal in Boston. Is this 2000 a deal? Thanks!
  • njswamplandsnjswamplands Member Posts: 1,760
if you can travel a bit, you can get a brand spanking new odyssey ex from jay honda, OH ( see dennis, internet guy ) for about 25,700 ( only about 2700 more ). from what i have read, the 2000 has transmission concerns.....
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
Look elsewhere. I live in Atlanta about 5 minutes from Gwinnett Place Honda. I just flew to Dallas ($89 on AirTran) and drove one back from there.

I priced all the Atlanta dealers, one in Buford and one in Gainesville. Nobody touched the deals in Texas; and GPH was completely laughable in what *they* thought was a great deal.
  • gatorhawkgatorhawk Member Posts: 23
where did you get the best deal in dallas?
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
I got mine from Eagle Honda up near Love Field. Contact me off the forum for specific salesman info. I also hear that even better deals are available from the dealer in Arlington.
  • jbpehrjbpehr Member Posts: 4
I bought a used car in TX before moving to MA. Since sales tax was higher in TX, MA did not make me pay tax when I registered the vehicle. I think that this would be consistent in other states but you should check.
  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
But they're so darn expensive, I guess because they're so popular. I've been looking at how the two models are equipped, and I really don't see anything missing from the base model that I need. It pretty much comes with all the options I want, with the exception of alloy wheels. Is this a stand alone option? If so, how much is it?What kind of price am I looking at for a base Odyssey with no add ons?

Been watching this board for over a year now. Just took a delivery of EX-L.
    Price for the van: 26,690
    Dealer fee: $198
    Tax: $801
    Tag: $61
Drive out price of $27750. I live in NC, this vehicle was sitting on dealer's lot, thats why I could get that price.
  • lucyvp49lucyvp49 Member Posts: 14
We finally decided to go with the Odyssey. The dealers on LI would not budge, so we took the advice given by sbpceap in post # 3055, and called Eric Tisdale at Staten Island Honda. My husband called him the day after Thanksgiving, told him exactly what we wanted, and asked for his best on an EX-L. He responded with 1200 off MSRP, so $ 27, 660, and we settled at 27, 500. The whole deal was over the phone and was done and faxed in 20 minutes. After ten weeks of looking and calling, it took 20 minutes. No extras were pushed. We took delivery on Saturday, and the dealership and Mr. Tisdale were a pleasure to deal with. We are loving our white EX-L, and it was well worth the 75 mile trip.
