Has anyone had any experience purchasing a warranty from a dealer other than the dealer that sold you the vehicle?
As to the warrenty, the Academy Honda finance manager offered me the same Honda deal you mentioned for $900.00 but I declined for the time being; still exploring this territory.
I don't understand many of the nuances of dealers pricing strategies so I'm curious why they are offering what seems like an incredible deal (outside of the increased competion and last model year issues.) Is it this $500 dealer/advertising incentive (or what ever it's called) I've heard about in this forum or the fact that somehow the dealer gets to order more '05 Odys to sell at above MSRP prices in the coming months? Was the deal only contingent on these 3 Odys on his lot? I guess I'll never know. Anyway...your post saved me close to $500 as I was literally going to buy somewhere else in NYC that day but thought I'd take one last peek at the Edmunds Town Hall just in case. With twins on the way (due in late July) I am resting easier now that I have this van in the garage. You really helped me. Thank you!!!
My understanding is that Honda dealers are allocated vehicles based on meeting sales goals and the such. The more vehicles sold, the more allocation a dealer gets in the future. By moving more Odys now at a lower price, they increase their allocation of Odys in the future. Presuming the market will command MSRP or more plus required dealer accessories for 05's for some time, the dealer could conceivably make more on the 05's by blowing out the 04's.

(plain glazed for me <g>)
And I was offered the warranty for $995, not $900.. very interesting...
And seriously, no need to thank me, we're all just looking out for each other.

So you like silver but got the red, and I like red but got the silver. Sounds like an O'Henry short story! Enjoy!
...and oh yes, Mr. Steve Host...I wish I could treat you all to a box of donuts!

I have never leased a vehicle before but it seems like an interesting deal?

I know this might stir some discussion but for the price I paid, I could not handle the door rattles, wind noise, road noise, and intermittent tranmission slippage anymore. I love the way the new Sienna drives and hated where Ody stood in comparision.
I was surprised with CarMax's offer, which was about $200 above KBB "excellent" trade-in value ($700 above trade in & $600 below private party on Edmunds) and sold it as soon as it was appraised.
Now, I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do with $500 in savings every month (payment+insurance)!!!!!!!!!
Good luck with your Odys friends.
The dealer is quoting me $1598 for the 7/100k Extended Warranty but I'm not going for it, especially when I hear the $600-$1000 deals being had by other Edmundians! Also offered the Paint protection, Fabric protection, etc. but nothing doing there.
One thing that does concern me is that I had secured my loan through ELOAN.com for 3.99% but the Finance guys there tell me they don't accept ELOAN since they don't fund quickly enough. I'm pretty suspicious about that since they won't accept ELOAN but are offering to match that or beat it from another lender.
Anyone ever heard of a dealer refusing to accept financing from a bank? Do I have any recourse?
You've purchased collision insurance to protect your new car in case of an accident and comprehensive insurance to protect against hazards such as fire, theft, or broken glass. But what happens when your air conditioning dies or your automatic windows won't close, just after your car is out of warranty?
GEICO's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) is designed to protect you from these bumps along the road. After a $250 deductible, MBI covers repairs to all mechanical parts of the car - except for maintenance and wear and tear. That means you'll never be saddled with unanticipated and expensive repair bills.
Special Protection For New Cars
MBI is specially designed to protect your new or leased car that is less than 11 months old and with less than 11,000 miles. Once you've purchased MBI, you can renew it for up to seven years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first).
Better Than An Extended Warranty
GEICO's MBI provides better coverage and is cheaper than the typical dealer extended warranty. MBI coverage:
Includes all parts and systems-not just the specific list of items
covered by most dealer warranties.
Saves you money. You pay only a small premium each policy period-not
a large lump-sum payment upfront.
Let's you get your car repaired wherever you like.
Swap Your Extended Warranty For GEICO's MBI
Already purchased your dealer's extended warranty? Most contracts give you a full refund if you cancel within 30 to 90 days.
If the dealer is capable of matching the financing rate, go for it IMHO.
So I have been talking to this dealer off an on for about a month but never made a firm offer. It was funny to see how quickly the price dropped to $250 over. To confuse the issue they are playing the dealer option pack game. "All our cars have $300 worth of options installed before we get them". I assured them that I could wait for a van without the option pack or go some place else. They also won't deny or confirm the $500 marketing incentive from Honda. They act like they have never heard about it :-)
The end of the month is Friday so I expect to see some more adjustments in the price. The Ody has been such a money machine for the dealers I am sure it is painful to sell one below invoice even if Honda hands them $500 per van.
I was expecting to pay invoice for the special lease offer from Honda, but I was pleasantly surprised to get a quote from internet sales at Carmichael Honda for over $1000 BELOW invoice.
So my final deal on an EX-L was:
$25019.94 cap cost
$277.78 /mo for 23 mo ($297.92 incl tax)
$20286.00 residual value (purchase option)
$400.00 up front cost (includes 1st month payment and title/registration)
12k mi/yr
I could have residualized the $400 so that I would have to pay $0 on delivery, but I wanted to stay just under $300 on the monthly payment.
Lute Riley Honda. $25655.29+TTL= $27,500 OTD
I leased it for 24 months, no cap cost reduction. Paid first month plus CA DMV fees.
Pre-tax payment of $312.50 a month. This is based up on a .00106 MF, and a 68% residual. I probably could have bartered a little more on the residual as AHFC is using 72% in their current ad, but that is just for an base odyssey. The navigation cars are usually a couple of points less on the residual. This was done in Irvine, CA. Couldn't have been a smoother transaction. Price was quoted over the phone with their internet sales guy. Same numbers when I showed up at the showroom. No pressure for add on's with the F&I guy.
Before I left they handed me a nice travel bag embroidered with their logo full of small gifts (pens, water bottle, key chains, nail clipper set, a nice owners manual case, pen and calculator set, free oil change coupon, and a nice Honda vest).
Everyone I talked to seemed to like their job and the product they were selling. They all gave me the feeling that they were glad I was there and wanted to make sure I was completely comfortable with every step of the buying process.
This was one of the best car buying experiences I have had; second only to when I bought my Lexus at Portland Lexus.
Thanks!
Been a year since I bought (2003 EX-L w/RES) and I thought I'd check in...
First and foremost, its GREAT to finally see that people are getting better deals. Amazing to see what a little competition will do! And don't be ashamed about not getting that 2005 model. Remember that experience is on the side of all those boxy Ody late 2003 - 2004 models (my guess is - so will be the deals as well).
BTW - when did Honda start offering the RES in the EX without the leather package?!?!
Where we are at...
- Just turned 21000 miles - all dealer serviced
- Daughter baptized the paint one week after we brought it home - ran her bicycle handle across the passenger slider
- Wife got hit in the front driver wheel - much to everybody's surprise, the only damage was to the aluminum rim that was replaced at the "hitters" expense...
- Needed to have doors lubricated because of "metal on metal" sound (dealer fixed)
- Had a couple of phantom door closing failures and occasional beeping (door alarm only - no dashboard light) inside as you were accelerating - not necessarily fixed - they just stopped happening after last fall (however, lubrication above may have helped the issue - the door affected was the driver's side slider)
- one unidentified noise when the TCS light come on (won't see that until the next snowfall)
Here are my "happy" points:
-Mileage is just about as advertised 17/24 for our use on regular (87 Octane) unleaded gas...
-FABULUOUS ride; especially loaded up and long trips - just awesome!
-Extremely Kid friendly (cup holders, cleaning up spills off leather, the RES, etc.) - also - the RES has paid for itself by eliminating the phrase "Are we there yet?"
Things that could be improved:
- On windy days, the cabin needs the radio on a little louder...
- Paint scratches VERY easily - almost too easily - and it really shows on the dark colors - buy a bottle of touch-up paint...
- I do miss the split rear magic seat, however, I couldn't pass up the deal I got at the time (Invoice + $2)
- I do have the brake linkage click - wish Honda could do something about this...
Other notes:
- One of the best pieces of advice I got off this site was the slow starting suggestion. If your Ody seemd to turn over more than it should during starting, try this: turn the ignition to the last position (RUN) prior the the cranking (START) position, let some of the idiot lights go out, THEN click to the START position. Since we started this routine, it starts almost immediately.
- On buying an extended warranty... Wait until you are at the end of the first year of ownership or just under 12000 miles. Go back to the dealership and offer them COST for the 7/100000/0 ($861). I did this and they took it - no questions.
Enjoy All!
2004 Honda Accord EX-L Graphite Pearl
2007 Honda Civic EX - Atomic Blue
2013 Honda Civic LX - Crimson Pearl
I spent almost 3 hours when I bought my own car under the same conditions (no trade, outside financing).
I do find things will move faster if you go and sit in all the cars in the showroom, opening/closing doors. I was sitting in the MR2 spyer, popping the hood and the engine cover (hey! mid engine!), examining everything. I can see other sales people were getting annoyed.
A couple of notes:
1. We got hit on the wheel with our former Civic and scratched the bumper. The wheels wasn't damaged but we found two problems after we had the car repaired. First the alignment got knocked out which the body shop didn't check so we ruined a tire before we detected it. Second the wheel bearing on the wheel that got hit failed 10K miles later at 50K miles.
2. In the manual for my 04 there is a note saying that the engine could take longer to start in some circumstances due to emission control.

I got an EX for invoice in Vancouver, WA 2 weeks ago. You should have no problems getting that price or better in Seattle with a little persistence.
If you can't get the price you want in Seattle try Dick Hannah Honda Internet sales in Vancouver. I would bet they would pick you up at the Amtrak station.
Honda Odessey EX-L : 27500 OTD
Is it a good deal?

And I even tried several other dealers in Portland area, the best I can get is $27,999 (Costco website refered dealer). I should probably wait two more month too see what happen. From what I read here, it should be pretty easy to get invoice price.
In my local area I ran into the:
1. "I'll have to check with the manager and call you back". They never called back after I told them I would not pay anywhere near 27,950. This same dealer gave a friend a deal for over 1k lower one week earlier. My initial offer was 3-400 lower than he paid just to leave enough room to come up and match his deal- their counter was 1500 above my offer.
2. no replies to email requests for price quote (1 dealer)
3. No return phone calls (2 dealers) In one case the sales person just took my name/number and never called me back (amazing!). I could have been willing to pay sticker for all they knew.
I didn't care who I bought from, the first dealer to meet or even come close to what I had discovered was a good deal would get the business. Finally, I went to a dealer near closing time on a Saturday and offered $26,880 (which includes the $490 destination fee and no other doc fees) for a EXL-RES. They accepted without haggling. Happened to be the closest dealer also- even better.
There is a $500 marketing support incentive for dealers in my area through the end of May- this may be nationwide. I know this adds some cushion.
There seems to be a number of factors a dealer takes into account making a deal
1. Luck and timing- I think my sales guy had someone walk in right after me that was prepared to buy as well. Probably not worth wasting time on someone when another customer is in the wings. My guess they still made $1000 somewhere in the deal if you include the holdbacks. If so it was probably the easiest $1000 they made all day.
2. Inventory (every day a car is on the lost has a carrying cost)
3. Allocation of future models (if the dealer is big enough and looks that far ahead)
4. A flexible sales manager that is in a good mood that day
5. Perceived view of the customer. If they are informed and appear willing to walk then why not sell it.
I got what I think was a good deal at about 600 under invoice but have seen where others have paid 3-500 less than me in the last couple weeks. My secondary concern was locking in today low financing before rates start going up.
BTW- the van is great. 400 miles so far.
Thanks in advance.
Paid $24,769 +TTL-->$26,303 OTD no trade-in.Thanks to this forum for this great deal.
In general most dealers don't want to make it too easy to get the lowest price via the internet. If that was the case they wouldn't need a big showroom and sales staff. So unless you take the no haggle costco/credit union/etc price each deal is handled individually.
The pacific northwest market is not as competitive as some others. The geography works in favor of the dealers. Over the years it appears to me that there is some form of good old boy network that promotes some price fixing.
Persistence is the key here though. Keep calling and checking the price and qualify your offer with a time that you will buy the van like today or tomorrow. If dealing with somebody local, setup a test drive so you can meet the internet sales rep even if you haven't got the price you want yet.
I would bet that you could walk into any volume dealer ask for the internet department, then make straight invoice offer and get the van. As you can see from this forum price varies daily and by location. The next challenge is the out the door price. Knowing that more people are using the internet and are more informed about prices, the dealers are installing more option packs. These are great tools to confuse the consumer with. How many people know you can buy door edge guards for $23 online and easily install them yourself. When the dealer offers to drop their price from $150 to $100 for edge guards it might seem like a good deal?
Thanks in advance
1. Anyone have dealer recommendations in the St. Louis area?
2. An acquaintance shopped solely on the internet for a 2004 Sienna and got one for 3000 off list from a dealer about 75 miles from St. Louis in Illinois. The dealer even drove it down for them. Any suggestion about shopping for the Odyssey on the internet. I don't enjoy shopping in person, but I still feel that may be the best way to get the best deal.
3. Warranties---can you get as good a deal if you wait 6 months or a year vs. buying at the time of vehicle purchase?
4. While there is a holdback now thru May 31st, does anyone have a guess as to what might be available in June. Would it be worth waiting until June to purchase, or, since it is the end of the month, would May be a better time? Any thoughts.
Here's my experience.
1. I live in Columbus, OHIO. Emailed couple of dealers here and also some under the 100 mile radius with my offer of $26,500 for EX-L-RES in
Sandstone Pearl on 5/18(Tuesday) at 10pm ET.
2. Got a call from there internet sales guy on 5/19 at 9:30am ET accepting my offer. No haggling
period!. Put down my $500 deposit the same day at noon after he faxed me the buyer's agreement to see the numbers and odometer reading/VIn on paper.
3. Drove 70 miles from Columbus to Dayton to pick the van on 5/20 at 5 pmET. The van was all prepped up and all my paperwork was ready. Went in and drove out with my new van in less than 1 hr.
I highly recommend them to anybody wanting to buy an Odyssey. I got it for $1000 below invoice. My happiest, quickest, smoothest car buying experience.
Sounds like you got a great deal. I'm surprised it was so much below invoice.
Also check out www.bankrate.com for the latest interest rate. However, you should be able to get 3.9% from your Honda dealer.
For the $1100 difference, it was worth my while to go out of state to get the car.
I got my car from the Chicago area.
