Host Kirstie indicated that the prices paid for the EW was off-topic, and I think my post #8327 accidentally survived some deleting. But I hope I'm wrong, because I thought it was an interesting question.

    dsmith1381,

Can you provide me with the dealer where you bought the HondaCare warranty from? That sounds like a very good deal.

Good luck with your purchase in Oregon.

I'm going to be looking to buy an Odyssey for the next 2 months for $1000 over invoice around the Bay Area. If I find one, great. If not, I'll buy a Sienna. I got a quote from my Credit Union for a Sienna for invoice (that's why I don't want to pay more than $1000 over invoice for the Ody).

By the way, Winter Honda (Davis, CA) gave me a quote for an EX-L with no DVD for $1500 below MSRP. He said he'd install an after market 10 inch screen DVD for $1400. Still not what I want.

    Thanks and good luck.

    3 more clues from friends/colleagues.

       1. Walnut Creek Honda: "a few hundred over invoice".

       2. Anderson Honda: (a miracle) EXL for just invoice, back in Oct. 2004.

       3. Trim=LX, invoice+$1000

I am trying. Don't know if still valid. Will update if there's anything better than you've got.

    Origami/Secondrow -

Thanks for sharing the detailed info. I'm also currently inclined to purchase an EXL/NAV/RES but am willing to wait until around June for hopefully better prices. One other possible dealer to try is Dublin Honda. We test drove the Odyssey there and were not pressured at all to buy on the spot. Unfortunately we did not get a price quote.

Please post any price updates you find, I will do the same later this Spring as negotiations turn more serious.

    Thanks!

Why isn't Honda Extended Warranties board listed under Honda Odyssey discussions? I think some of these topics might not die from lack of interest if they were accessible from some of the more popular vehicle discussions like the Odyssey. Maybe I just can't find my way around as well as others, but I'm not sure if many readers/members even know what the Smart Shopper board is. I didn't.
  • SylviaSylvia Member Posts: 1,636
It is - if you browse by vehicle Make/Model = Honda Odyssey, it is listed. It will also be added to the Honda Odyssey Owners Club. It will not be listed in the Prices Paid board. (Note - the majority of users browse by make/model, so they will see/find the discussion).
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
OK, I see. But I never come in 'through the front door,' as I have the list of Odyssey discussions saved on my favorites, and it doesn't come up there--at least not yet.

correction to #2, MSRP rather than invoice. no miracle.
  • janiejanie Member Posts: 2
I was just curious why you didn't go with the lower price, I have 2 dealers I am talking to and Freeman is one of them and Freeman is $578.00 lower than the other dealer but the other dealer is 30 minutes closer, I don't know what to do
  • longhorn2longhorn2 Member Posts: 9
As I said in my original post 2 weeks back, nobody had the Slate Green color in EXL trim at the time and my in-laws were coming to town. Besides, wife thought I was nut to drive 100 miles to buy a van (from Arlington), so I ended up paying $112 more than the Freeman quote for the tinted front windows/pin stripe/VIN etching, I consider it even. Of course I still wish I paid only $500 over invoice. My suggestion is to tell the dealer closer to you about the Freeman price and ask them to match, if they don't, go with Freeman, 30 minutes drive is not that bad.

Great post, scottyb, glad to hear you got such a great deal and fine service.

For whatever reason, things appear to have since changed at that store. I sent them an internet price inquiry a couple of weeks ago on, I believe, a particular unit. They replied with a list of all Odyssey model prices, each being $1500 over invoice as I recall. My second email questioned such "steep" prices in light of the many favorable posts about this store and I received no reply.

If they believe their product will command $1500 over invoice in NE Ohio right now their lot will soon be choked with cars as competition is fierce in that area.
  • SylviaSylvia Member Posts: 1,636
You'll need to add it to your favorites.

I want to admit that I am not a savvy negotiator. I have assumed that purchasing a touring with Nav/RES will pretty much require paying MSRP, which I understand is about 38,810. My husband and I have been looking for a Slate Green with olive interior. We have been occasionally dropping in to window shop at local dealerships, however, I am not sure we are going about it the right way. My husband got a call a couple of weeks ago that one of these dealerships will be receiving the van we want by the middle of Feb. We took a check to the salesman I assumed to "hold" the vehicle. We haven't struck a deal yet, but my husband did sign an order and the price quoted is 39,808 (this includes mudguards and I believe pin striping). This price is $1,000 over MSRP. Surely, they can't be serious about charging that much for about $100 worth of dealer product since they are making about 12% profit on these even selling at MSRP. Now, since reading these forums, I see that it is not impossible to purchase one of these for less than MSRP. For my area, what we are hearing and seeing posted for TMV is that people are paying MSRP. Is it too late to try to negotiate a better price or should I just kiss my deposit good bye and wait until I can find a better deal?

My wife and I were just out looking at vans tonight at Carmax. Our intent was just to get an idea of what was out there, and hopefully check out the 2005 T&C and maybe look at a used Odyssey or Sienna while we were there. Well, they only had a few Odyssey's on the lot, but one of them is a 2004 EX with 4,000 miles. The best guess is it was a dealership's demo car. Anyway, the price is $24,599 ($26197.88 out the door). This is actually slightly higher than what we wanted to pay, but the best we can tell, this is a very good price for this car and we are now trying to confirm if it really is a good deal. KBB has the car listed at a value of approx. $30,000. However, in Edmund's info they have it listed around $22,000. I've been looking on-line and it's just about impossible to actually find any 2004s for sale, so I don't really have much to compare it to.

If anyone can offer some advice as to whether or not this price is a good deal, I'd appreciate it.

My guess is that for a $1000-$1500 more you could get an 2005 EX out the door shopping on the net. More than you wanted to pay, but a better deal in my opinion. You might even be able to find a 2005 Ex right at invoice 25,527 + TTL. The new Consumers Report tested the 2005 Ody, Sienna, Grand Caravan and some loser GM product. The Ody was rated best by just a whisker over the Sienna most likely because they didn't like the Sienna's braking distance.

It is worth a phone call to the Internet sales mgr; feel free to use my name, although I don't suspect it will help. My understanding is that their supply of NAV models is limited, but if they have the cars available, my sense is that they will be competitive.

See posts 7446 and 7441 for possible strategy.

My experience was not typical since it was the last day of the year; that pressure does not exist in feb '05. With my deal, there was no negotiation--she offered invoice, and my only decision was whether to go out of state. After having another car sold out from under me the same day (see post 7398) and knowing how fast odysseys--especially NAVs--were blowing out of showrooms in the last week of the year, it wasn't a difficult decision for me to accept the offer.

Very kind of you; just right place at right time.

The Internet sales mgr told me she can get non-Honda models from other dealers in her group. Since it seems that you are a Toyota guy, I'll let you know that there is a Toyota deealership in the group.

    With all good wishes...

I defer to the more experienced posters, but I thought that you can typically obtain a refund of such a deposit if no contract has been signed.

Get in touch with cccomposon to find out where there is a dealer selling the Touring RES/NAV at invoice, which sounds like a pretty incredible deal (see post 8382).

    Keep us posted.

I just picked up a new 2005 Odyssey EX today. I also purchased the all-season mats, but I was very surprised when the sales person told me they only covered the front and middle rows. The back row (3rd seat) has NO all-season mat. This seems very strange, especially for a minivan where all 3 rows are generally used. Can anybody else confirm this?
  • ewy123ewy123 Member Posts: 3
Thank you rashdir, I will be checking with Freeman and DavidMcDavid to see if they can make me a deal at under $800 over invoice. Good luck with your purchase too.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Oh, no question the end of last year presented a unique opportunity - one I jumped on myself by purchasing a Pilot EX-L Nav for $700 under invoice with 2.9% 60 month financing.

My point though was that many here have extolled the virtues of this store (including myself based on other posts) yet when I approached them my reception was, to say the least, chilly.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Since the vehicle has yet to arrive, I doubt the dealer would balk at a request for your refund though, legally, it all turns what, exactly, has been signed. It's certainly worth a try - the worst that can happen is that they say no.

If a refund is refused (and depending on the amount) it might even be worthwhile to just abandon the transaction altogether. Forget about MSRP and come on up to Ohio - there are two stores here offering to sell me a Touring R&N at invoice (a good $5000 less than your number) right now.

While I don't feel free to identify them until I conclude matters, College Hills Honda in Wooster (near Akron in NE Ohio) is offering all in-stock Odysseys at 1 cent over invoice for the rest of this month. See the home page of their website for their Odyssey inventory. They told me just yesterday they will pre-sell any coming in at $500 over invoice. While they do not have any R&Ns in stock, a couple (a silver EX-L and a white Touring) are scheduled to be built this coming week and some others are on tap for March.

The Tennessee market must be rough for consumers now. A Memphis dealer offered a black/black Touring R&N on ebay last week for a "buy now" price that was $2000 over MSRP. I looked for the ad again last night and it was gone so perhaps they got that price - yikes!
  • lxbuyerlxbuyer Member Posts: 5
What are these going for in the Washington DC area? Since LX's are relatively rare, does that mean the price is lower or higher (relative to invoice) than for the more common Odysseys? I've seen quotes at around $24,300 for an LX with no options. Is this a good price? Edmunds what others are paying is $25,365 which seems unbelievable high.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
$24,300 seems high as the invoice is $23,100 on a model not in great demand.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
DON'T DO IT! That's a horrible deal! You can pay about that much for new 2005 EX.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
You should not pay more than couple of hundred dollars over invoice on LX. Pohanka Honda of Salisbury MD can give you a great price and deliver the car to your home for free. There's no need to just limit yourself to the DC area dealerships. That is unless you want someone to rip you off...

Just wanted to post our experience - we live in Florida where Touring Odysseys with DVD and RES have been extremely hard to come by. We had been trying to get the van since mid-November. There hasn't been one to be found until recently - and we have searched statewide. One that we could have had in December would have cost $4000 above MSRP, and, forget about getting anything close to invoice price. We resigned ourselves to MSRP as that's what everyone was basically offering, and the van is so hard to get. The van does seem to be getting slightly easier to find now, as the day we were buying it, a couple of other dealers called to tell us that they had one. Oh well, we had to act quickly as we are expecting a third child in a couple of weeks. So, to complete the story, we bought the van at Duval Honda in Jacksonville. It was an ok experience. We got it for $500 under MSRP with a $279.00 dealer fee (which was a couple of hundred less that a lot of dealers were charging). They didn't throw in any extras. I think we lost out on our trade-in - a 1998 Acura TL with 85,000 miles, in very good condition. They gave us $4700. We new that Carmax may give us a couple of hundred more; but, that was basically the tax savings. And, we live in Orlando, so we didn't really want to drive two vehicles back from Jacksonville.
  • bob45bob45 Member Posts: 8
I also live in Florida and agree EXL with dvd res/nav are also hard to find. However I REFUSE to give anything above 500 over invoice. I can afford to wait as I do not NEED the van I WANT the van. I'll just hold out because the supply vs demand can't last forever. Who know maybe I'll end up with an 06. I feel the 500 over invoice and dealer holdback equals about a 1500 profit which is fair to both parties. I have moved the search further from my home but believe that only time will allow this deal to happen. Who knows maybe Honda will offer some incentives later in the year.

Does anyone have any recent experience purchasing either EXL or Touring in the Louisville, KY area?
  • azkid2azkid2 Member Posts: 47
New dealer just opened up closer to us. Met a neighbor there who was thinking about trading in an '03. Older couple, thought I might be of some help to them.
  • bigblueindybigblueindy Member Posts: 18
Bigt2, I didn't purchase a Odyssey but a Pilot at the first of the year from Sam Swope Honda World in Louisville. I looked at the 04' Odyssey last summer when they had the killer deals going on and they seemed to be the dealer who most wanted my business. Neil Huffman in Clarksville is another good dealer but they don't want to do the same deals Swope does. I guess that's why Swope is the biggest dealer in the region. Bob Montgomery Honda you would be wasting your time dealing with. They act like you are taking food out of their mouth by asking for a good deal. When I looked for my Pilot in late December I told Swope to match the same deal I could get from Mike Pruitt in Akron, OH and they did. I didn't even have to bring them a quote. I know we can't give salesman's name so email me if you would like and will give it to you. I hope this will save you some time.

I just purchased an 05 EXL and wanted the all season mats and the cargo mat. I went on honda.com and found them priced at 199 for the cargo mat and 256 (I think) for the all season mats. I went to Burns honda in Marlton,nj and purchased the cargo mat for 110 and the all season mats for 159. I think the reason for the differnce is that what I purchased was not what was on honda.com. The cargo mat doesn't cover all the area when the third seat is in the floor. It stops short of where the third seat floor area would be. The all season mats only cover the front and second row flor area and don't cover as much as the regular floor mats do. They skimp a little onall sides. njhonda
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
No, what you purchased *are* the standard Honda cargo mat and all-weather mats.
  • tmk3tmk3 Member Posts: 7
Dulney, just so I understand... the all-season mats only cover the first and second rows? Second, if i buy the cargo mat does it cover the 3rd row even when the 3rd row seats are up, or is it only used when the 3rd row seats are down in the floor? This is confusing, as when I ordered the van my sales person told me the all season mats would cover all 3 rows. What are you using to protect the 3rd row from an all-season standpoint (vs standard carpet mats). Thanks again.

Generally, is College Park Honda the lowest-price dealer in the Washington DC area? Others I have contacted are offering Odysseys at higher prices. Is $1000 over invoice about what people are paying in this area?
  • pmarcospmarcos Member Posts: 17
As posted previously, I'm in the bay area and decided to purchase a Touring R&N from Kendall Honda up in Oregon. We just got home after a REALLY great experience. The person I dealt with there stayed true to his word, no surprises, no gotchas. Their dealership is in a new location and is sparkling clean, the people are friendly and helpful. My family and I flew up to Portland, drove down to Eugene, spent about 1.5 hours at the dealership and drove off. Very, very, nice people there. No BS, just the standard ext. warranty, etched glass options and dealer installled options offered (we declined on all) with no pressure or anything.

After we left the dealership we drove down the Oregon and California coasts for an absolutely beautiful drive home. The Ody drives great, is LOADED with features and we made good use of the Nav system already finding places to eat and stop along the way. We're really happy!

The price we paid was $1800 over invoice so $36,358. Since we're out of state we didn't pay the dealer the TTL and that will go to the dealer. After a $1000 deposit and a $20 trip permit I showed up with a cashier's check for $35,378 and that was it.

All in all after accounting for the 3 one-way tickets, hotels, meals, etc. we probably saved about $1800 off the prices the Bay Area dealers are asking. It appears that more people are getting Touring models in now so perhaps they'll come off their high MSRP horses now, but in the meantime we got our van, saved some money in the process and had an enjoyable trip down the coast. I'd highly recommend it to anybody in the Bay Area! And if anybody's looking for a stellar dealer in the Eugene, OR area, drop me an email.

Thanks again for all the tidbits of wisdom in this forum!

    Hi Rashdir

I am just entering the market for the EX-L with RES. Can you guide me to what price you got your's for. Your posts have been quite informative and I greatly appreciate it.

Best price so far is 30,100 including all fees, no accessories.....

Anyone else have a better price??
  • andy28andy28 Member Posts: 3
Does this include the taxes. I have got a quote of 29987 (1000+ invoice) + TTL extra. This is for the east coast for EX-L/RES.

    Moondance,

You mentioned your husband's deposit was by check. I would do two things: First, IMMEDIATELY call your bank and stop payment on the check. Second, call the dealership and tell them you'd like to void the deal and purchase a different van. If they refuse, let them know they hold a now-worthless check and they can do with it... (insert your most colorful version here). If they threaten legal action, they're bluffing... you have not taken delivery. (If you'd feel better, contact your family atty in advance for verification).

True value is 'what the market will bear.' But if that dealership feels that market value is really $39,808, then they should have no qualms voiding your deal, because they'll have 10 more people lining up behind you to pay that (they won't, or if they do, those 10 people don't read these boards).

I know a certain poster will likely say "but you signed a contract... you're not holding up your end of the deal." But as you said, is charging you $1k for $100 of accessories fair, either? Honesty and integrity are a two-way street.

These guys are selling Honda Odysseys, and I'd guess about 2,000 of 'em roll off the assembly line weekly. This is not the last Slate Green Nav/RES that will ever be made. I'd bet there are 20 vans just like the one you want at other dealerships throughout the state/country. Don't be afraid to walk away if you're uncomfortable now.

There are good deals in TN. I bought a slate green EX-L from Dobbs Honda-Mendenhall in Memphis for about $500 over invoice. Got that price over the phone... simply checked their on-line inventory for color/options, and said "$26,284 is what I'll pay. Will you sell?" Answer was 'yes.'

A neighbor bought a dark blue EX-L at similar savings from the same dealer. They will negotiate openly and (for a car dealer) honestly.

There is a better way, and knowledge is the key to successful negotiation. These boards are a good starting point.

I wish you best of luck.
  • SylviaSylvia Member Posts: 1,636
You can get the same mat as found from Honda at H&A (banner above discussion title) for less.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
The all-season mats come only for the front and 2nd row. You get nothing from Honda for the 3rd row.

The cargo mat is supposed to cover the 3rd row seatbottoms when the 3rd row is folded into the floor. It's supposed to fold onto itself, when you you lift the 3rd row up. I don't have it myself, just saw pictures of it when the 3rd row is up and down.
  • s2000fevers2000fever Member Posts: 37
For the same price as the Honda black rubber mats, you can get clear Exact Mats that cover the front row, between the front seats, the 2nd row, the 3rd row, and a liner for the rear well (flat piece - doesn't go up the sides like the Honda piece. I paid $112.50 at a SoCal Honda Dealer - that was $125.00 less a 10% discount just because I asked for it. I was skeptical at first but am quite happy. They fit all contours perfectly - not a universal item. They also have a website and emailing them resulted in a list of several local dealers. If you already have the black Honda mats, I believe that they will just sell you the 3rd row.
