When In bought my Ody with RES & NAV last Friday, I tried telling the dealer what I would pay for the extended warranty based upon posts in this site. He just about laughed me out of the office - telling me to feel free to buy it elsewhere if I could find it for my offer of $75 over the "book" price of $1050 for 7/100K/0. He wanted around $1800 for it, claiming that to be the book price.
I live in Florida where by law, I can only buy the Honda policy from a Florida Honda dealer. That shuts out a ton of good online & out of state deals. Does anyone know of a dealer in Florida that sells the 7/100K/0 policy at a decent price to a person who didn't buy their vehicle at their dealership?
" I live in Florida where by law, I can only buy the Honda policy from a Florida Honda dealer. That shuts out a ton of good online & out of state deals."
That does not sound right. Did your dealer by any chance tell you about this "law"?
No, the dealer didn't tell me that...the curryhondacare web site had a big note that they will not sell any policy to a Florida resident. And my research turned up the Florida limitation on another site - don't remember now which one.

It's a well discussed issue in other forums. Florida considers extended warranties to be insurance. As such, they can only be sold by insurance reps registered by the state of Florida. Further, Florida regulates the discounting of insurance.
We are beginning the process of purchasing a '05 Honda Odyssey EX (if we can afford that model). I've been reading these messages and found them very helpful. Can anyone in the suburban Philadelphia area give me some feedback on dealers who will really offer a fair price and what are the different models going for in recent weeks? Are any models more scare than others etc.. Any advice you can give to start us out would be very much appreciated.

Well, that explains why the dealer laughed at you and wants to charge $1800. He knows you are stuck. I wonder if any other Fla. dealer will match prices many people received elsewhere on warranties, or whether they are all in cahoots with high prices because of the law? That stinks.
Neighbor traded her '03 ODY EX for an EX-L. Dealer offered her $5K under MSRP but would allow only $17K for her '03 with 31K miles. She didn't say how it ended, but must have been better than that as she traded. This dealer JUST opened (barely). All the above are plus TTL etc.
Hi - I just wanted to post that I got what I believe was a good deal on a Sage EX-L at Joyce Honda in northern New Jersey. We negotiated over the phone to pay 100 over invoice, and were able to pick up the car the same day. We were treated very well and they kept to the quote over the phone and didn't "try anything" when we got to the dealership. All in all a very good experience.
Has anyone had any good deals in central Jersey on the EX-L RES? Trying to get a rough idea on what people are paying over price and what document prices are ranging in the central NJ area. I was looking at Clinton Honda as well as Phillipsburg Honda in my area.
I searched the forum for any recent update on best dealer prices in and around Boston for EX or EX-L. We seriously started looking for a week and best quotes we got so far are 1300 above invoice (+tax and fees). Is this price OK. I saw many messages with prices 500 above invoice; any suggestions in MA or NH. thanks.
thanks hprao. Might be obvious but just wondering: your price does not inclue tax right? (i.e. you paid invoice+500+tax+ttl to take out the vehicle or even tax is included); in any case its better than my other quotes. thanks for info.
I know what I want-05 EX-L w/ RES. Prefer silver pearl. We've gone to 3 area dealers (Coastal in New Bern, Lejeune in Jacksonville, and Parker in Morehead City) who all tell us they won't go any lower than $1000 under MSRP! I have been reading these posts and I know they can go lower. I am willing to drive to Raleigh or VA or SC to get my price. I'm willing to go $500 over invoice. But no one will even HEAR that around here! Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!
I am looking to purchase a 7 Year / 75,000 Mile extended warranty for the Odyssey. I have been reading that some people can get it for under $800. I was wondering if anyone who think they got a good deal on the extended warranty can give me the name of the dealer that they purchase the warranty from.
I put a $500 deposit down on an EXL RES/NAV, but now a different dealership has come back with an offer $800 less and I want out. What rights do I have? Thanks for your help!
What did you sign? Most dealerships will give you back your deposit and let you walk away. but you're not going to make any friends at this dealership.
IMHO, I'd be wary of the better deal - are they promising anything?
ellenm, I've heard/read good things about Sussman and Sloan. I'd recommend going to hondacars.com and doing a dealer search on Philadelphia. Send emails to 20 or so dealers asking for their best price on the EX and go from there. Edmunds also has a price quote tool you could try. Whatever you do don't pay more than $1,000 over invoice in this area, and you can probably do better than that. Good luck.

I just bought ours from Pohanka Honda in Salisbury, Md. It was $795 for the 7 yr/75K miles. Sorry board host for not putting this in the EW thread. I'm just an innocent responder!
"What did you sign? Most dealerships will give you back your deposit and let you walk away. but you're not going to make any friends at this dealership."
Got that right. I had a $500 deposit at a local dealer last fall and then negotiated an offer that saved me almost $2K from a dealer in Colorado Springs 90 minutes away. Asked the local dealer to match and then even split the difference, but no dice. Bought van in CS. I had told the local dealer they could send me my $500 deposit check, but then decided to call the bank and do a "stop check" because I suspected this might get ugly. I never heard from the local dealer again, and never saw my check again. To me, it was worth the $28 stop check fee to avoid the hassle.
Go to post 8355 in this discussion. Dick Brooks in Greer SC received good comments. Haven't heard a lot of good things about eastern NC. Toe Raleigh area is tightly held by a few owners. I.E. Leith Honda, Leith Toyota, Leith Dodge, Leith Chevrolet, Crown Honda, Crown Ford, etc, you get the idea. Maybe Davenport Rocky Mount or Vester in Wilson but have only heard a few things on each.
If you hear anything firm please post as there has been little info for this part of the country.
Stop check a good idea, but if you legally owed them the $500 they could have taken you to small claims court? But then again I doubt a dealership would do that over $500...don't know.
Not likely they would for a variety of reasons - the main one being that the only monetary loss they would suffer is if they end up selling the vehicle for a lesser amount. In that event the defaulting buyer would be responsible for the difference between the (breached) contract price and the eventual selling price - likely a small amount.
Sorry for this late reply to your inquiry but have you tried "Sam Swope Honda World" in Louisville? I recently purchased an EXL RES for 500 + invoice there. Swope also sells extended warranties almost at cost. On the other hand, a sales manager at Neil Huffman offered $400 + invoice when I told him, by phone, that I had 500 + invoice in hand at Swope. But I didn't feel like driving across the river for his shoddy $100 discount (he should've been more aggressive if he wanted to intercept Swope business). Nevertheless, this story should demonstrate a willingness on the part of area dealers to deal within a few hundred dollars of invoice for EXL-RES Odysseys. Hope this helps! Good luck!
I am in the market for a 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L and I live in the Lexington, Kentucky area. According to a dealer who responded to my e-mail inquiry, Factory Invoice Cost on it is $27,548.95 plus all applicable taxes and fees as required by law. The dealer said their last three Odysseys sold for about $28,200-$28,500. Has anyone had any recent good deals in the Kentucky area? If so, is it unreasonable to expect a purchase price of $100 to $200 over invoice cost?
Also, does anyone know if you are responsible for paying sales tax on the difference of your trade-in value? I have received conflicting answers from KY dealers on this question. Some have stated that I would be responsible for sales tax on the entire purchase price, while others stated that I would only pay tax on the difference after the value of the trade had been subtracted from the purchase price. Thank you.
Does an Odyssey bought in Oregon (or any other state) comply with California emission standards? If not, you have made a colossal mistake. Check out the California DMV web site (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29.htm). The dealer I'm talking to has told me he can't trade Odysseys with out-of-state dealers because of emission standards.
I had a similar situation. Lived in Sacramento Calif. Had to get rid of my Plymouth Voyager which is still the only vehicle I have gottten rid of with less than 100,000 miles (it had 71K). Wanted to buy an Astro in Nevada or order one without CA emissions since I was leaving in two months. No WAY! Dealers said that as long as I had a Calif address, they could not sell me a non-Calif car. Wound up buying a Ca emissions Astro.
I am the one that just bought an 05 EXL from Dick Brooks Honda at Greer, SC. Also silver pearl color. Two emails and one phone call to Dick Brooks Honda got me to the invoice price at 27,550 + 99.5 doc fee. I searched extentively back in Jan and sent out more than 50 quotes. I contacted almost all the dealerships within 200 miles of Charlotte and also several other dealers that are recommended on the forum. If you send me an email, I can send you a list of the quotes that I received. I can also give you the name of the salesperson I worked with at Dick Brooks.
Well, I'll find out for sure when I go to the DMV on Friday to register it but yes, Honda makes a single model of car that's certified for sale in all 50 states. They make all Odyssey's (and I believe every model) to meet California's emissions.
"Stop check a good idea, but if you legally owed them the $500 they could have taken you to small claims court? But then again I doubt a dealership would do that over $500...don't know."
I don't believe they had (have) any legal rights. I didn't sign anything when I gave them the deposit. They held the check for a month and never deposited it. It basically, according to them, "held my place in line." When I tried to get them to meet the new deal, I was told two people were in line after me.
Berkmom, a bit off subject: I have been following your posts on prices in eastern mass. Topics were very useful, can you please suggest one based on your experience (we live in MA). On verge of buying one, input will really help. thanks.
On the subject: I am not an expert, but was informed by someone knowledgeble that they dont really have much legal backing (and may not even care).
Contact Sam Swope in Louisville - posters repeatedly cite them as having the best prices around your area.
I don't know why the dealers would give conflicting information on the sales tax credit question - it is elementary. To be sure, contact whatever state or local agency handles your titling process and find out the definitive answer.
I will say that I (an Ohio resident) bought a new car in Kentucky last year and the dealer was well versed in the concept (as that is the law in Ohio and I got the credit IN OHIO even on an out of state transaction).
I just spoke to the Finance gal at Pohanka Honda and she quoted $764 for 7yr/75k and $1069 for 7yr/100k, both with $0 deductible. It sounds very easy and well worth it.
I found the exact vehicve that I wanted at a dealer near the Vegas airport. Since I'm in Socal, this would have been an easy flight and a cab ride. I called Honda and they said that the CA emission warranty is only valid on vehicles delivered in CA. I don't know if this was a story or ?? Fortunately, I was able to locate my vehicle near my residence a day later.
"Does anybody have any info on Scott Honda in West Chester?"
I was just there today (picking up my '05 Ody being serviced). Their service department has an excellent rep. My 2 experiences with that dep't have been very positive --offered loaner even though we didn't buy there, washed our filthy van each time, car washer even told us to stop by even if we weren't getting service and he would wash our van in 5 min. for free.
On the sales end, I dealt with a very nice and accomodating salesperson, whose name I will be happy to give you if you email me. Unfortunately, they were $3,100 more on a RES/NAV than I was being offered in Ohio (see post 8389) and manager wouldn't close gap. If you want to save another $500 after shipping and don't mind having the car shipped, it may be worth a call to Ohio.
I suspect on an LX that Scott will match the Martin quote. (I had heard that Scott had a reputation for not matching the cheapest prices, but they were offering decent prices on a Pilots few weeks ago.)
There have been a number of LX sales at invoice ($23,100) cited on this board; I'm sure you can do the same. If you are willing to go to NJ, prices at or near invoice were discussed from Joyce Honda, Honda of Essex, Metro Honda, and Garden State Honda.
Other Philly dealers to try:
JL Freed - Lansdale--I'm sure they will beat Martin.
Marty Sussman in Roselyn--you will get a good price
Mike Piazza Honda--maybe, especially if you like the Mets
Martin is one of the cheaper dealers in the area.
I have contact names at many of the dealers if you want to email me.
which model are you looking for? i know of 2 very good dealers that are offering good deals - not sure about invoice price but much better than most other dealers
Curry Honda in Chicopee, MA will do 31,400 with $99 doc. for EXL RES/NAV. Commonwealth Honda in Lawrence will match if that is closer. I am still working to see if anyone will go lower. Hope this is helpful.
Thank you, that is useful. I am looking for EX and the best quote got so far is Invoice+250+doc fee. I will try couple more and hopefully close deal today. Thanks again.
What are the things you suggest to check on the EX model before taking a delivery?
I am asking this because I got a couple very good quotes (near invoice) and when I tried to shop around and get invoice price at a different dealer. That guy suggested that no one will give a vehicle for that price and if someone is giving there is something wrong with the vehicle itself. Well kind of understood that its his gimmick but just want to make sure that car is in good shape before closing. I am not an expert please suggest any things to be extra careful of. I test drove the car going to buy its nice as any other odyssey. Please share any must check items. thanks.
I purchased an EX-L from Kelly Honda in Salem, MA in December. Started out w/ EX ended up buying EX-L. Both quotes were ~300 over invoice (including destination fee). Haven't had service yet, but their service program sealed the deal for me. Several of my friends have nothing but great things to say about their service. I shopped via email w/ Honda North, Bernardi Honda, Commonwealth Honda, Honda Cars of Boston, Herb Chambers, etc. Honda North has a similar service program. If you're willing to go to N.H., you may do better.
The service program includes, free lifetime inspection stickers (excluding the first one), free towing w/in 30 miles, loaner cars w/ appts., pick up and drop off @ your home or business w/in 10 miles, 5 free oil changes, $800.00 additional for your Honda trade in and a free 100k powertrain warranty.
My next door neighbor owns a Toyota dealership. Kelly worked hard for my business. They knew I was deciding between a Sienna and an Odyssey.
Turn signals, dim/brights, brakes, ignition, automatic doors, remote automatic doors, remote lock/unlock, electronics (radio, power windows, etc.), odometer reflects new vehicle, vin no. matches contract description, moonroof, seat function/stowage, spare tire present, interior lights, cruise control, ECO/VCM engine function, transmission up/down-shifts appropriately, fluids topped off, heat/a/c function to include rear area, seat-heater function, seat belt function, floor mats present, the list is illimitable but these were key points for me...and if we were talking EXL RES, I'd DEFINITELY recommend checking the RES function since the missing fuse for the Odyssey's RES seems too often to escape the dealers' pre-delivery inspections.

Can you please state the dealer's name whereabouts in Southern California which is selling the EX-L RES for $30,100?
In Northern California, the best price I got is $30,900 from El Cerito Honda (north of Berkely). I don't mind traveling south to save $800.
Plesae let me know and thanks.
515 is destination.
483 over invoice.
After that we paid tax+ttl.
This price is with no bargaining. We offered and they accepted on web/email. May be you can try with a lower number on President's day sale!!
IMHO, I'd be wary of the better deal - are they promising anything?
