Yesterday, after going thru the checklist and drive test (everything was fine), I pickup my '01 EX w/ Navi (at MSRP price, HondaCare 7/100/0 for $925), I never thought it was going to be such a superior ride, since I had only drove tested the '99 LX (16K miles on it) w/ a dealer tag of $24K. I was not that impress with the road noise, vibrating around 65mph and lack of extras but we were willing to overlook some things since we didn't want to get our second choice the smaller minivan Toyota Sienna. But paying that much money for a used one, wasn't ideal either, so we decided to buy a new one. I order the '01 EX - for the extras at a better value (with very expensive toy for me - the navigation system, and actually my wife will use it since she gets lost anywhere, I hope this helps her). Now, there is a difference so far from the '99 I tested, I don't hear the road noise I had heard before, I think that is great.

This minivan is very well put together and handles very well (especially in corners). It rides very smoothly and quiet. Next, we are going to take it for a 4-hour trip to NYC.

This message board really helped me made up my mind, thank you all!

Does anybody know if it is possible to install fog lights from '01 Ody onto '00 one? I hate those fog lights that they were offering back in the year of 2000. But I do like the new ones. The vehicles do look the same, but I just don't know whether indeed these '01 fog lights will fit on my '00 Odyssey...

I'm just about positive they'll fit, but to make sure, call Trevor at (888) 440-8655. His site is http://www.handa-accessories.com/ He's a big help and knows his stuff.

Yes, the new fog lights fit the '00 Ody--and I agree, the new ones look great.

Bringing my '01 LX to the dealer to fix some initial problems. I notice that the doors do not automatically lock when I turn the key to start the engine, nor do they unlock when I remove the key. I'm used to having that feature from my 94 Camry and my 95 Galant. Is this the way the van is supposed to work? I got the Honda remote entry/alarm installed and I want to make sure that didn't mess up my locks.
  • rrf7rrf7 Member Posts: 5
I am considering installing the fog lights myself but I have read before that it is easier and it is better for the dealer to do the installation for the fog lights, so I am almost retracting from the idea to install them myself. Taking the bumper and cutting the holes sounds scary, I know I could do it, but how easy it is to mess-up? How difficult it is to take the bumper out, cut the holes and put everything back together? Does everything looks and feel just like it was before the installation?

Another thing, How do I make sure I am ordering the '01 Fog Lights at the time of ordering them? Is there a part number difference between the '00 and '01 Fog Lights?

    Thank you,

The guy at Partsheap.com is telling me this about the installation of '01 Ody fog lights onto '00 vehicle: "... The fog lights are vehicle specific. There are different styles of
fog lights for the 2000 and the 2001 Odyssey. Mainly because of the
difference in the shape of the holes where the fog lights are
    installed..." Now I'm really confused...
  • ckonckon Member Posts: 22
I don't believe it, since both require cutting out the crossbar in the hole. In fact, I just checked Trevor's site and the old lights aren't even there any longer.

Call Trevor at that site. He'll know for sure since he supplies them.

BTW, you might be able to save a dollar or two somewhere else, but Trevor's been available and very helpful EVERY time I've called him and his prices are at least very near the lowest. He also monitors most of these boards so he keeps up with what's going on around here.

I am considering buying an extended warranty. My 2000 Odyssey is over 12 months old and has over 20k miles, so buying the Honda Care is not an option. I have been looking at this company called Warranty Direct. They have a coverage (Diamond) which is inclusionary, not exclusionary, meaning that everything is covered unless they specifically exclude it in the contract. The prices are very competitive. I can get the 100k 7 years for $825. It has a $50 deductible, and roadside assistance. Has anyone used this company or heard positive/negative stuff about them?

I installed the '01 fog lights into my '99 EX. No problems and they look great!
  • ckonckon Member Posts: 22
They really are a great finishing touch, aren't they?

being out of gear while stopped at an intersection is illegal in at least california and arizona...i don't know about others but i'm sure this law is not uncommon. i believe the reasoning is that, if you're rear-ended and lose control, your car would just drift into middle of the intersection in more danger. imho, don't worry about this...i don't think you'll incur any more wear leaving it in gear like you're supposed to...at least not within a lifetime of normal driving.

""... The fog lights are vehicle specific. There are different styles of fog lights for the 2000 and the 2001 Odyssey. Mainly because of the difference in the shape of the holes where the fog lights are installed...""

That is just plain silly. The 1999 and 2001 Odyssey take the exact same front bumper and even the supporting parts behind it are the same.

I took the other style ones off the site because no one seemed to want them after seeing the new style. I'm still waiting for Honda to offer just the replacement lamp assemblies in the new style for those that want to just swap out that part.

The new style will fit 1999-2001

Everyone, Just got my AutoWeek magazine today and behind the front cover is the new MacNeil ad with a CSS Odyssey with their products that go on the Odyssey. They've got some good pictures for those of you who are interested in after-market mats, their ventvisor (Weatherflector looks pretty good), and other add-ons. Keep in mind though that they lightened up the photos to make it easy to see. The grey mats are not that white, and the Canyon Stone Silver Oddysey was overexposed to the point that it gets close to a Starlight Silver. It could be just the print quality, but I'm pretty sure they brightened it up. I believe they say a headlamp cover which that didn't highlight for the Odyssey.

I'm sure this print ad will appear in other rags.

    Happy Shopping!

I am thinking very seriously about buying a new Odyssey and have been reading with great interest about the problems that the Odyssey owners have been experiencing. Some are very frustrating. For the amount of money that I will have to shell out, I feel I shouln't have to put up with these problems. So my question for all the experts out there is: Is the Honda Odyssey all that it is cracked up to be and is it the best minivan out there? I would greatly appreciate your input. Your honesty about the pro's and con's would help out a lot. THANK YOU

You may not be out of luck on HondaCare... As I mentioned in post 1614I recently purchased a 6yr/100K/0 ded HondaCare for my 1999 EX w/ 32,500 miles, which I bought new 3/28/99, the HondaCare cost me $795 and also includes roadside service, only excludes listed items (short list, pretty much same as exclusions in Honda Warranty listed in the Owners Manual. Since you put over 20,000 miles already you'd probably be better off with a 5yr/100K/0 ded which was quoted at $695. For anybody else who cares the 7/100/0 was $925. All the above are from Gregallen at Union Park Honda Inc. (Wilmington, Delaware) 302-573-5222 e-mail:

As for Warranty Direct, I've only heard of them because they mailed me an unsolicited application for their Warranty. I decided to go with the known, and backed by Honda choice.

I've never purchased an extended warranty before (actually, I've never had a vehicle with a warranty before!), but I've become all to well acquainted with the local Honda Service Manager (Recalls, doors, doors, doors, and my Oddy drinks a quart of coolant between (3,750 miles) oil changes--first coolant addition was at 2900 miles. Honda Techline allegedly says mine is the only one... it holds pressure when tested, no drips or coolant trails anywhere, just disappears. not subject to Colorado Lemon Law because it isn't a safety problem and doesn't prevent me from driving the vehicle (except when it is in the shop, but offering me a (Cavalier Sedan) loaner takes them off the hook. I'm gonna keep it, but I hope what ever is causing the coolant disappearing act heals or fails more dramatically before 100K. I always have the dealer add the coolant, check the system, and make a record, so it is very well documented. They did replace the Radiator once, but that wasn't it, or else I also got only the second leaky radiator in Honda V-6 history!)

Leave the selector at D4 while stopping in traffic unless it is major long wait like in case of a major accident or similar situations. In that case, it's much better off to apply parking brake, shift to P, then turn off the engine and wait. Shifting between N and D4 on every stop is not a good idea. Here is why, 1st clucth is engaged every time you shift to D4 and dis-engaged when at N. The engagement causes some wear and tear on the clutch due to friction.
There is a slight chance for the torque converter to overheat the ATF in long...long... wait at D4 due to friction by fluid coupling . For the short duration wait like in normal traffic situation, it is much better off to leave it at D4. Hope this answer your question.
    Happy driving!

    Auburn63,

Any thoughts on the neutral at stop' controversy. Is there any wear associated with the N-D4 shift or sitting at idle in D4? What's the deal?

And is there really a law against sitting in neutral in CA and AZ?? Are the Neutral police enforcing this? What about all the cars with manual transmissions? What are they supposed to do?
  • binkybarnesbinkybarnes Member Posts: 69
i remember this from years ago (and i mean years! ago) when i was brushing up for my driver's license tests but now i'm curious and will check into it again. and, yes, there are some pretty arcane laws out there...for example, in AZ, it's against the law to drive barefoot (at least it used to be) but no such law exists in CA. i think the law is actually intended for manual transmission cars...i guess you're supposed to leave it in gear but with the clutch pushed in all the way while stopped? but, i don't think police proactively enforce these types of laws. i think what happens is, if you're in an accident and they discover your car wasn't in gear, you are can get cited and, depending on the circumstances, may be found at fault. in any event, i'll ask my BIL who is a CHP officer or search the DMV website. i do remember asking him once about the seatbelt law and he says they only cite for that when the driver is pulled over for something else, like speeding. i hope i won't have to come back in here and say that i dreamed the whole thing up! :-)

I am looking for opinions about the available transmission cooler for odysessy. If one is going to tow something, its a no-brainer. Otherwise, is it worth it (about $300). I was thinking it might be if I load up the Ody will the family, stuff, dog, bikes on the back, etc.

Most of the problems you read are in relation to the power sliding doors. Some have had bad trannys but have gotten them replaced with little to no hassle(always exceptions but overall most have been replaced). If you eliminate the power door posts from the "problems" forum then the thread would become rather thin.

The LX version is really a bargain these days since they added traction control, adjustable driver seat height and itermittant rear wipers.(imho), I wish I could have waited a year to buy my LX to cash in on these updates.

I will say that I think the Honda matches up well dollar for dollar with any other mini out there even after all the rebates and such are accounted for. I feel the Honda's extras are in the build of the vehicle itself. Best engine still, strongest frame, 4-wheel independent suspension(no other van hads this), standard ABS(no other van has this at there low trim models).

None build features such as the rear fold down seat(don't forget about the well thats created when the seat is raised, allows for a ton of space for cargo), middle seat captain/bench feature along with the performance factors mentioned above are ones in which you can't substitute for. You can always buy a clutter catcher if you pass on the DC's 2001 model(I can't believe they are hyping that center console "organizer" in the focal point in one of thier commercials.) A power lift gate? please, Just bells and whistles folks. In three years the DC third seat will fold into the floor.

The best mini out there? Yeah, I think so but I bought one so I'm biased. Have had no problems save for sticky sliding doors but that was fixed. If you buy an LX your gonna spend the same amount of cash on just about any other vehicle so I dont see why your singleing it out when you say "with the type of money you have to spend". If your looking for a bargain with quality along with some of the unique features as the Odyssey and you don't need as big a vehicle then check out the MPV, they can be had pretty cheap and the owners are thrilled with them. Whatever you decide just make sure it is the best for your needs, not whatever you(or anybody else, me included) thinks the biggest and baddast is.
Good luck Lynn, If you choose the Ody I hope you stick around and share your thoughts with us on these boards.
  • thomasithomasi Member Posts: 9
I agree with masshoosier... it is the best mini out there. We bought the LX and could not be any more pleased. The van has been dependable, drives great, and overall quality is excellent. We intentionally stayed away from the EX - too many bells and whistles for the electrical gremlins to have fun with(power doors). Another part of the equation for you to consider is depreciation - the Honda will hold its value much better than DC, Windstar, etc. Good Luck.

i searched the california website for the vehicle code violation that leaving a car in neutral while stopped at an intersection was illegal...well, i cannot find such a thing. my apologies. did i just dream the whole thing??? yaaaaaaahhhhh!

Honda automatics can handle either way without any long term affects or damage to the trans. The trans fluid will stay cooler in neutral or park than in drive if sitting still for long periods of time. So if you are in a non moving traffic jam then I would say put it in park but other than that as long as your foot is on the brake you can do it either way. The major thing with Honda's is not being at a complete stop before changing directions. This shifting(R-D or D-R)while still moving in the opposite direction or rocking the car in snow or mud when stuck is the worst and causes the most damage.Hope I answered what was asked ok..
  • h20guyh20guy Member Posts: 64
just keep your foot on the brake at a stoplight, I've done it for years now with no problems and no traffic violations. I would think that the majority of drivers would do just that or have I fallen into a joke thats on me? Or is it simply that I should stop doing what other people do? =)
  • minimanminiman Member Posts: 85
I have had a few probs w/ my Odyssey EX (mostly headache-type stuff, tho the power door problems could affect safety). I have critically evaluated whether I bought the right van, and if I needed a new one, would I do this again - bottom line is that no other van compared to Honda in terms of utility. Toyota has marginally better quality per Consumer Reports but the space (or lack thereof) behind the rear seat is a joke. We would need a roof carrier to go the the supermarket.
Yeah, this is a boatload of $$, but it is cost-competitive w/ most other vans out there. Unless you buy a really base model from Ford or Dodge, you will be in this ballpark (or higher) before you know it once you get traction control, A/C, etc.
If you can live w/o the toys in the EX, get the LX.
    Good luck.

Only thing I remember seeing in the CA DMV driver's handbook was to not coast down hills in neutral or out of gear for the obvious control problem if you car dies while doing that. But that was back in the late 70's.

Taffeta White at MSRP less $180. No add ons. No gimmicks. Were told it should be ready for delivery in April this year. It will be their first Honda after owning these world class cars: Corvair Monza Spyder, Studebaker Champion, Datsun 510 SW, AMC Pacer, Chevy Monza Spyder, Chrysler LeBaron (K-car), Ford Econoline 5 Passenger Van, Nissan King Cab pickup, Ford Escort 4 door sedan.

I'm looking to buy a Odyssey EX for use in Europe and then ship it back to the states. In Europe all I can buy is the Canadian version.

Does anyone have any experience in dealing with a Canadian Spec Odyssey-EX in the US. I've heard that the warranty is not valid. Is there a way to buy a warranty for this vehicle once I return to the states?

"Best engine still, strongest frame, 4-wheel independent suspension(no other van ads this),"

Where did you learn that the Odyssey has the "best engine, strongest frame" ? The Honda web site ?

"standard AS(no other van has this at there low trim models)."

Totally untrue. Did you learn this on the Honda web site as well ?? Or the salesman who sold you your van ?

Hi everyone, I haven't visited this board for months, and tried searching for these topics, but couldn't find any.

I need to take my 2000 Odyssey EX in for problems with the pulling to the right--what solutions has everyone got for this--our local dealer plays dumb, says no bulletins, hasn't heard of it, etc, yet I know Honda was investigating this problem. I'm going to drive the hour back to the selling dealer to try and solve this problem, and want some info to take with me from others who have gotten a fix for the pulling to the right.

Also, regarding the brakes--they make a clicking noise when braking, and also when I reverse from parking they skip/skid??? Don't really know how to explain this, but it's kind of like when you run over a rock and your tires skid for a second--the clicking noise (like a metal rod is stuck on another one then releases itself???) What solutions have been done for this brake problem if anyone else has it? It's hard to explain how it sounds--so I will make sure I go for a ride with the service advisor.

Thanks for everyone's help in this matter, sorry if it's been answered before

Is the clock in the Odyssey EX supposed to be lighted at night? I rarely look at it/drive at night, and noticed recently it is not lit/can't see the time in the dark. Was just wondering if it doesn't have a light, or for some reason mine quit working? Everything else lights up just fine.
  • exindenverexindenver Member Posts: 32
Just checked since I don't pay attention to that either. The clock lights up as soon as the ignition is turned on. Just like the climate control panel. If that is on but not your clock, you have a problem.

I got mine in San Diego and I got a great deal considering some places were asking 1000 to 3000 over MSRP, it was kind of time consuming to find the right dealer though, but I am very satisfied overall. computergeek96@hotmail.com

I had a 2000 Odd on order and 1 month before delivery I cancelled it because my needs changed or rather my wife's.Now that I am going to retire and move out west its time to sell the UV and get something more practicable. You Odd owners that live in the hot climates such as Arizona and Nevada, how does the air-conditioning cool down the van? Are the speakers still lousy?

Apparently you missed the "imho" but then again you more and more just quote what you want and make some stuffy reply to it. Best engine is right, thats my own opinion and NO I am no expert. Does some mini out there have a better one, I didn't see you add anything to this statement. Any other mini offer ABS at the low trim model(maybe toy, maybe ford), I didn't see your answer. I based the frame on the crash test scores(all 5's) and the 4 A-frame piller set-up, I guess I should have given the Windstars there due in that catagory...sooorrrrryyyy Mr. grapelavloff. The lady wanted an opinion and I gave it to her, if she wanted a debate she would have asked for it or started a thread of her own. If she was looking for an engineers only opinion than she could've asked for that too. I suggest you just give your own opinion and stop trashing what others think all the time. Thats what the VS. threads are for. If you can't do this than just go away, you are becoming a bore with nothing to offer.

I recently noticed excessive wear on both of the outer edges of my 2000MY Oddessey's front tires and took it to the dealer. The van had about 25,000 miles on it. The wear on each tire was identical. I got a call from the dealer saying the vehicle needed alignment as well as new tires. I saw message #1715 and decided to post this message on the board because my first indication of a problem was the pulling to the right.

Also, if someone knows how I respond to a message I'd like to learn. The person who put out #1715 has interesting information.

Here are Tom and Ray's opinions from cars.com:

"Overall, we were favorably impressed with the construction of the Odyssey. Ray put it on the lift at the garage and took a look at the underside. The frame and frame rails appeared to be very ruggedly built, with four-wheel independent suspension. Ray was impressed. And he even managed to get it down without dropping it off the lift. "
