Find a lawyer. Period. This is serious stuff and should be pursued by a professional before you get yourself in too deep. If you do not know a friendly attorney who will charge you less than $2,000,000 per hour, a phone call to the state Attorney General (ph # easily found on the Web or in phone book) may do you some good. They may even offer to help you out for free. The dealer should be put out of business if this is their gig.
Good luck, and Don't go it alone!

My '00 EX (GG) gets lousy local mileage (15 if lucky) but given my use, I canont complain. Cold start, 10 min in local traffic gets kids to school, 2 more min to my office. Also, many hills. Wife has van 2 days - errands galore. Stop and go. Cold start, short trip.
We recently took a highway trip which reaffirmed my faith. 24.99 MPG (to be exact!), some hilly highways, speeds typically 70+ MPH. 87 octane. I found no improvement with $$ gas.

Seems it's the driving and not the van. Poor aerodynamics, big mass - little else you can do on city streets. Try walking or riding a bike.

Thanks for the response Dave and Vanman. Dealer I purchased the minivan is Pauly Honda, Libertyville, IL. They have cashed the check in the exact amount that is in the deal or contract. But they are saying that they made a mistake by not adding NAVI system on the deal. We did not realize it, and realized it only when the mangaer called us after 7 days. I will call Att. Gen office tomorrrow, and will talk to a lawyer. By the way we paid ~27K for the minivan (with NAVI)+ tax. Thanks,

Is there a way to turn off the maintenance light with out going to dealer? For example if I get the oil changed not at the dealer shop, how to turn off the light? I have a 2000EX
  • mojo66mojo66 Member Posts: 83
From the way you are describing the transaction, you should be under no obligation to pay the additional $2K the Nav system would have added to the purchase price--only the amount agreed to and signed on the purchase order. I'm certain the lawyer will tell you the same and the dealer cannot hold title for making such a mistake. The dealer is out $2K. FWIW, you might want to find another area dealer for servicing the van, if you know what I mean.

Detailed procedure to turn it off is provided in the owner's manual.

A friend had a similar problem with a new Dodge truck. I don't know what all his options were but he ended up returning the truck for a full refund and buying from someone else. Unfortunately you won't find a deal like you got anywhere else and you'll probably have to get on another waiting list. Good luck with the Lawyer.

I just turned 5k miles on my wifes 2000 Odyssey EX, and decided to do a tire rotation myself. I looked through the owners manual, but was only met with the usual points for the scissors jack on the outer body rail.

I prefer using a quality floorjack and jackstands, and doing one side of the vehicle at a time. I ended up jacking the front up via the lower A-arm mount, placing the jackstand under the front subframe rail, then jacking up the rear via the shock mount. I noticed a small depression in the frame rail up front once I removed the jackstand. Is there a better place to support the vehicle than where I chose?

I suppose I might get a few suggestions to just let the dealer or a shop do this stuff, but that's not an option. I prefer to do my own regular maintenance since I take the time to do it right. I torque the lugnuts with a hand torque wrench. I washed the insides of the wheels and waxed them to keep the aluminum from pitting and corroding.

    Thanks!
  • treyh1treyh1 Member Posts: 34
The entire front can be lifted by the tie-down hook (center of the van, a couple of feet in from the bumper) if your floor jack has the capacity. I lift it when I change the oil, but I haven't had to lift the back yet so I'm not sure. I'll check the shop manual; if you don't have an answer tomorrow I'll post it.
  • geb1geb1 Member Posts: 19
There is a jack point in the rear similar to the one in front. It is a hook welded to the cross beam directly between the wheels. Just be careful of the exhaust pipe right next to it!

I know because I just rotated my tires this weekend for the first time (5K miles) While doing it I ran into a strange problem. I removed all the lug nuts from one of the front wheels and it wouldn't budge. All the other wheels came loose as soon as the last nut was removed.

I tried pulling the tire, kicking it ( with increasing intensity each time ), and finally hitting it (the tire)with a sledgehammer. Nothing! Luckily I have the alloy wheels and was able to pry the wheel off with the wooden handle of the hammer.
When the wheel came off I could see some pitting where it contacted the hub. It must have begun corroding and bonding itself to the steel hub. Never had a problem like this before. If I had gotten a flat out on the road, I would be SOL!
I'd recommend a coating of wax or oil to keep this from happening in the future.

Question for you Odyssey owners. I am considering the Sienna XLE and the Odyssey EX. The Toyota salesman pointed this out to me, so I wanted other opinions. What do you do with your full sized tire when you have a flat and you have to install the mini-spare? Does the flat tire fit back into the mini-spare compartment?

I can get the EX for $1800 less than a similarly equipped Sienna XLE, so I am leaning towards the Honda currently.

    Thanks for you input,

    Jack
  • hotspurhotspur Member Posts: 34
No, the flat will not fit in the well. Honda provides a plastic bag into which you put the tire, and then you put it inside the van.

The last flat tire I had was eight years ago. The one before that was in 1975. It is really a non-issue, except perhaps in the mind of a Toyota salesman trying to close a sale.

You might remind the Toyota salesman that the additional space in an Ody vs. a Sienna would probably allow you to fit four or five spare tires.:-)
  • jsambatjsambat Member Posts: 4
I have been monitoring my gas mileage since I got my 00 EX ODY. It has been great with highway driving. Maybe 24 Plus MPG using Premium gas.
But local driving has been horrible. With 40% Highway and 60% local the most I get is about
13 MPG. Have told Honda and I have not heard from them.
Based on thses experience, I will trade my ODY for a Sienna soon.

Jtlanejr,..the right question should be...in case there is Rain or Snow..would you be willing to unload your family on the roadside to put the dinky tire (which is located on the second row behind driver) on your odyssey? First of all...why in world its inside the cabin? ..second..Try driving your 4200 pound van on tiny spare tire on ICY road and survive to let us know about your experience. Bottom line..stupid design...hopefully by 2003 or '04 models years...they will put it outside where it belongs!!! By the way...someone is already suing honda on that!!!

Have you tried to obtain the Title through your DMV? I would think that legally the dealer is required to submit the title in a required amount of time after a vehicle has been purchased. In any case you should be able to obtain a copy of the title from the DVM for about $10.00
You've got a good case going though---document everything-every email, keep messages left on answering machines and tape telephone conversations. Let him know you're recording though or it isn't legal in a court of law. Buy a recorder from Walmart where you have 90 days to return it. The dealer is S.O.L and the money they're making by charging MSRP will have to pay for HIS mistake. I would also contact the manager and inform him that you've contacted your lawyer(whether you have or haven't) and let him know that you've instructed the sales person not to contact you any longer conserning this issue.Good Luck!

Not only does Oly provide a plastic bag to cover your dirty flat tire, but they also provide (at least on the 99 Ody) a mounting point and hardware to mout it rigidly in the rear cargo well. Again, the owner's manual explains and shows how to to this. Maybe Honda no longer supplies this manual, since so few people seem to read it. Unnecessary accessory, I guess. *:o))

The last flat I had ,that I had to fix my self, was more then 20 years ago. It helps to carry a portable electric air inflator and can of air with sealent, to temperarily fix your flat and to get new tires when the tread gets low. Also helps to have AAA.
  • richcolorichcolo Member Posts: 81
You've made me laugh... there is no need to unload the family, the cover and spare come right out with the car seats still installed in both middle row seats. You asked about changing it in the rain or snow, and then "why is it in the cabin?"--well I once changed a tire in the snow, and the spare was mounted under the bead of my 1978 Chevy pickup, until you've laid one the ground looking up at a spare tire being held hostage by a mount that's been subjected to 8 or 9 winter's worth of salt, while the heat from the exaghst melts ice onto your face, you might think that under the vehicle is a good place for a spare. I no longer find that location desirable. I'll put my flat in the trash bag and proceed to town on the doughnut happily if I don't have to fetch the spare from underneath, even in the snow.

I hope you enjoy your Quest. My sister has enjoyed her 1993 Villager (a Quest twin I believe), but after I picked her up at the airport and her Cello and luggage for 4 fit behind the back seat, leaving room for our parents to ride along to meet her,(1 of me, 4 of them, and our 2 parents) she was very interested in the Odyssey. After she drove it(about 350 miles!)she ordered a 2001 EX Navi when she got home. Maybe I'll buy that old Villager from her, to use when my Odyssey is (back)in the shop with sliding door or cooling system trouble!

jsambat--You might want to lurk on the Sienna boards a little before you trade the Odyssey off for a gas milage complaint, I believe you'll find some of the nice folks over there equally disappointed with their milage.

I too found myself listening to the Toyota Sienna salesman pitching the "terrible Ody spare placement.... and picture your family having to unload from the vehicle on a cold, rainy night to change the flat"..... just laughed at him and asked "got anything else to offer as a selling point over an Ody?" I have had 1 flat tire in my entire life and have also found that I can remove the Ody spare without EMPTYING the vehicle. Give me a break.

I picked up my GG LX Ody last week after briefly considering the more expensive Sienna LE. Pleased as punch so far.

Additional subject; Has anyone found good seat covers that at least somewhat match the fern interior of the GG? My young children are attempting to quickly "age" the new interior ....Thanks
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
FWIW, I would *never* jack any vehicle with passengers inside. Jacks are unstable enough as it is, without having somebody shaking the vehicle while it's up on a jack by moving around inside the cabin. That's just asking the vehicle to drop off the jack.

Safety suggests that all passengers get out of and away from the vehicle and away from the road. If the weather is bad, the tire changer needs to work fast.

Has anyone here actually purchased the warranty from Tracy Dalton at Alton Blakley in KY? I just got the paper work, and she's offering the 7/100,000/0 for $875. The contract states it's a B70 plan code. Is that the standard one? Also, does anyone know the difference between the "Honda Care", vs the "Honda EASY Care"?

I just wondered if anyone had experience with this dealership.

    Thanks in advance!

PS I'll be picking up my '01 EX in Mesa Beige this weekend!
  • richcolorichcolo Member Posts: 81
Mschafer, you make a good point, I haven't had the opportunity to change a tire, except on a car parked in a restaurant parking lot (Broken beer bottle that I didn't see in the dark, slashed sidewall) since becoming a family man, so I hadn't thought about it. Probably would not let the family stay in the van during a tire change, making "everybody out of the van" part of the flat tire drill no matter what kind of van it is.

Thanks for all your input concerning the spare tire in the Odyssey. I, too, have had few flats over my driving life, but it is a valid point that I needed clarification on. After driving the Odyssey again last night, we have decide that the Sienna is the best van for us. Although the Honda is a good value for the money (I found one for $350 below MSRP), the wife likes the ride in the Sienna better. After beating the Toyota dealer down to invoice with no doc fees, that is the best van for our needs.

I read an old post of yours concerning coolant loss. I suggest you replace your radiator cap. When the dealer "checks for leaks" they remove the cap to apply pressure. This explains why there is no residue or leakage. You can also do an oil analysis (try www.schaefferoil.com) to see if the coolant is getting into your motor oil. Could be a head gasket.

I know nothing about your Honda van, just applying other world knowledge.

You folks are either lucky, or don't drive on the wonderful New Jersey highways that I do. Just had to fix the first flat on our Odd with only 5K miles on the good-as-new Michelins. Talk about depressing. Picked up a 5/16 drill bit which went all the way in through the tread smooth end first.
After numerous nails, screws, and other metal objects I bought a 20-pack of plugs. They last a couple of years and eliminate a trip to the tire dealer. Can now repair a leak in 15 minutes!

In late summer will be making a cross-country round trip which will include a few days in Las Vegas. Do not have our ODY yet. Hopfully, in a month or so. May possibly be in line for a periodic service around LV visit time-frame. Will be staying at Sam's Town and see that there are 3 Honda dealerships fairly close. Does anyone in the LV area have a recommendation where best to go for service (hopefully, not for probs)?
    Thanks/DeHawk

I have a 2001 Ody and the Purge Control Solenoid (PCS) Valve in the engine area (upper right corner) does not shut off while the car is idling. Normally, such a valve will go on and off to allow air into the engine. I complained to the sales manager and service manager and they have tried to repair it twice but to no avail. First, they replaced the valve. The second time, they adjusted it. Any suggestions or thoughts?

have you heard how much yet??
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
What symptoms does this defective PCS valve exhibit?
  • neech7neech7 Member Posts: 23
Looking at the pictures, the screen seems to be mounted too close to the 2nd row seats, causing the kids to strain their necks looking up in order to view it. I thought perhaps the overhead unit should be mounted closer to the front for comfortable viewing by those sitting in the second row seats.

Why, in the year 2001 don't they at least offer a DVD version? There is little future in VCPs and they take up much more space.

does anyone know if after market leather is any good? if so is there anyone in the md, dc, va area that does it? And is there an entertainment system available?
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
The purge control valve has a constant duty cycle at idle. Some are louder than others but it is normal for them to cycle on and off at idle and sligtly above idle then stop off idle on accel.

I actually think the spare tire placement is genius! If its inside the cabin, it takes up room. Underneath the vehicle....(as stated in #1830) is just a ridiculous location. Where will Toyota dealers (or Nissan owners) suggest as a better location...... the hood?
  • lumanskilumanski Member Posts: 39
Has anyone had any good or bad luck with either the Cargo Cover or Cargo tray? They say the tray doesn't effect the folded third seat. As far as the cover goes, it seems like a great idea but I'm not too keen on drilling holes in my new van.

    Rich,

Last night I picked up my new Ford Expedition after waiting for Odyssey for 2 months...by the way..I had an '94 quest with over 100K that I traded over with no problems...so you are making wise decision if you buy the one off of your sister...Quest and Odyssey are two different vans..ones cost lot less than the other...you should really compare Odyssey with GC or Sienna..they are more closer in price range and size...While Odyssey was listed at 29K with Nav...I decided that it won't make any sense to buy a minivan for that price when I can have expedition for 1K more...Lot more room (3rd row seating), power/towing, and safer. As for gas mileage...for my highway commute...it won't make much of a difference.

    430 of 720 Cargo cover by daisydavi1 Aug 27, 2000 (07:08 am)
I purchased the cargo cover for my '00 Ody. The dealer drills 4 holes in the rear panels. All you do is put the ends of the poles into the holes.
It's a horribly designed product. The rubber grommets keep coming off the end of the poles when you want to remove the cover. They get stuck in the holes, thus needing a tweezer to pull them out. In the process you scratch up the panels with the end of the unprotected poles. And of course you build up a sweat removing the cover because the poles do not bend so easily.
It is such a hassle, because I frequently lower the rear seat when doing errands. It has to removed to do so. When I first ordered it, I assumed it worked the same way as the CRV cover.
I did not want it anymore and asked to return it. The dealer said Honda has acknowledged the problem with the cover. Hennesy Honda in Woodstock Georgia, took back the cover AND replaced the rear panels with the drilled holes at their cost.

Today I noticed while driving in the rain that with intermittent wipers on,it is actually slower in half the set speed when my Odyssey is at the stoplight then it is faster as soon as I'm off. Its a good idea since its annoying if you're not actually driving.
I'm wondering what sensor they used?
They can actually use the same sensor so we don't need to put the van in "park" to open the power sliding door. What do you all think?

Just picked up my Ody LX yesterday. Paid at MSRP. I received very good services from the sales person, Kim Suos, at Herb Chambers Honda in Boston. I was offered a 7/100 Warranty contract from the dealer (from API with Guaranteed Price Refund) for $1500.00. API will Refund 100% of the warranty premium at the date of expiration of the contract, if no claim filed against the warranty and has less than 100,000 miles. Sounds too good to be true? Does anyone know anything about this type of warranty contract and do you think it is a good deal?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
If I am following your question correctly, yes the int wipers will speed up (reduce downtime) when the car is in motion. The presumption is that with greater speed, more moisture hits your windshield.

One thing which I think all Hondas do (at least all of mine) - with wipers in the intermittent mode, the they sweep as soon as you release the brake pedal to wipe off any moisture which is on the windshield. Try it in your driveway - with your van in gear and foot on brake, put int wipers in slowest mode, wait for wipers to sweep and then let foot off brake - the wipers will sweep again.
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
They charge you more for that type of warranty. A 7/100/0 Honda Care warranty costs about $900. You can figure that they have calculated the odds so that the dealer will make more money on that type of warranty then one without money back. What you are doing is gambling and play against the house odds, which have been fixed to not be in your favor. If there was a market for it they would probably be happy to sell you a double or four times your money back warrranty, which they would sell high enough, to make a good profit on it.

Warranties are an insurance policy. Why pay extra for gimmicks. Also the warranties I have seen so far, that are not Honda Care, are not as good as the Honda Care warranty and the dealers try to sell you the non HCW because they make more money on it. Also on a HCW all the Honda dealers take them without question. On others they have to call the company and sometimes enter into negotiations as to what is cover or not.

Buy a HCW 7/100/0, at say $900, and you are getting it at a lot less, then most people who don't read this board, get it for.

"have you heard how much yet??"

The 'unofficial' information from Honda is that the list price for it will be $1695.00 The install time is estimated at 1.4 hours (I'm looking forward to seeing the installation procedure to see how it could go in that fast, that or the # is a mistake)

The Honda cargo tray fits perfectly in the well and does NOT interfere with the folding of the third seat. Best deal is to buy it from one of the Honda Parts sellers mentioned in these threads. The cost is about $60 with shipping and beats the dealer by about $50. Installation time is 5 seconds. (really!). I have not used the cargo net.

Spend the cash, its the best accessory you can buy. Buy online like the previous poster said, the dealers will gouge for that thing. No installation, you just drop it in, its that easy.

hello all, My advice to prospective Odyssey owners:Buy the extra warranty!! I know I am.
As i anxiously await my new SS EX, I'm getting ready to sell my '97 Civic. This car has run like a dream, with no problems whatsoever... typical Honda. HOWEVER, just days before I'm about to put it up for sale, the SRS (airbag) light comes on. Bottom line--$430 for a new SRS computer. Ouch!!! Had a standard 3 yr/36K for the civic. Civics are so trouble-free, i wouldn't have contemplated the xtra warranty for a minute. I am for the Od, however, because obviously there are alot more potential electrical problems that can happen at any time.

Thanks to all the people who have given such invaluable info here. It has really helped!!!

I have read with interest the questions and comments about getting an extended warranty and/or where to get the best deal on one. I noticed the field is mixed as to which way to go. I too am very interested in this subject for a few reasons. First I just picked up a '01 EX and plan to keep it for a few years. With all the bells and whistles on this vehicle an extended warranty seems like the smart thing to buy. However, I also posted the question in a couple of news groups and was very impressed in the replies I received. The majority said do not buy the extended warranty. That it is a waste of money. Also keep in mind you do not have to buy it at the time you buy or take delivery of the car. You can buy it just before the factory warranty expires. Others said take the money you would spend and put it in a separate savings account in case you need it for a large repair out of warranty. The best answer was from a fellow who said he has owned 7 Hondas since 1978 all of which had over 150,000 miles before selling and not one needed any major repairs. Just keep it maintained and you won't need the warranty. As a result I am not going to buy one at this tim. I will wait and see what happens before I spend my money. Just my .02 cents.
