More power is available for off road use. *:o)) You just have to know where to get them.
Anyone know the location of this module and what if anything has to be removed to get at it? Is it in the engine compartment?
It's a 10 minute job to replace it, although I think it's rated at 30 minutes.
While CU does its best to compile objective ratings (and I applaud them for this) there are many confounding variables that it is probably impossible to take into account. A good example is the gov't safety ratings. A car like the Miata does fairly well despite its tiny size, but probably because it is often a 3d car and locked in the garage when it snows and rains, resulting in less collision risk and a good insurance performance. Large cars like Mercury Grand Marquis, while probably umong the safest, are also favored by older drivers who have a higher crash frequency and may experience more injury in a collision given their often more frail bodies, thus pulling down the loss experience and safety data from an otherwise very safe model. It's NOT all in the numbers - it's all in how you interpret them.
The NHTSA and IIHS crash tests should go strictly by the numbers, and not by interpretation. Those are scientifically controlled tests. Of course, they don't always predict what will happen in real world accidents where the masses and angles of the vehicles involved may vary. The loss ratings from the IIHS (death/injury statistics) are subject to interpretation. While these figures do have a component of real crashworthiness in them, they also have elements of accident avoidance and driver profile as well.
however at about 2000 miles I noticed a heavy
accelerating noise (like the sound you hear when a
semi-truck downshifts when they pass you) when I
would go over 45 mph. It seemed like it occured
just as you would shift into 5th gear (I guess that
is considered overdrive). It may have been there
all along but in our excitement of having a new
car, and stereo, we always had a cd playing and I
never listened closely, but I don't think that was
the case. Maybe I am wrong. The sound goes away
when you release the gas pedal and resumes when you
press down again. I also think it makes the noise
at a lower gear only it is just softer, now that I
have really listened. I took it to the dealer.
They said that it was fine. It was consistent with
Odysseys all across the board and probably due to
too high of octane gas. They said to use only 87.
My husband had used higher octane about then so I
figured they were right. Now, nearly 2500 miles
later and only low octane fuel I still hear and
feel the sound. Question. Is this true for other
Odyssey owners or should I make a fuss about it and
go back to the dealer. I am worried I am ruining
my new car by letting the problem go, if it is
really a problem. If not, I guess we bought a
noisey car. Thanks for your help.
I just thought that as a college student, some people might be interested in my opinions of the vehicle.
First of all, I love this van. Great power, comfortable, and as edmunds would say, a "cavernous" interior. I regularly lug 3-4 saxophones around and can still fit 5 other people in.
I have driven my Odyssey to school and back about 6 times - that's a total of 12, 2 1/2 hours trips, and the van is very comfortable compared to a Land Rover Discovery I used to haul things back and forth last year.
There are only 2 complaints I have about the van.
1) only minor, but the power seat controls are too easy to rub against when getting in and out. Then I can never remember where I had it set comfortably. no biggie.
2) the sound system is atrocious. absolutely unacceptable. The sound quality was horrible, and with work you could either get it to sound harsh or muddy, but that was it. I also found that the CD player HEATED UP MY CD's!!
The good news is that I would not replace the factory speakers. I had a new system installed (which I've never done before in any other car).
This system includes a 200 watt amp, an 8" sub, and a new head unit. For the sub the installers constructed a box. I had them remove the center tray, detach the top of it, and reattach it to the top of the box.
The head unit is the real sweet part. I don't know how many of you have heard of the empeg. It's an in-dash MP3 player. It's reeeeeally expensive, but it's well worth the price. Check it out at www.empeg.com
You can see pics of my installation here:
http://empeg.comms.net/cgi-bin/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=install&Number=21055&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5
I prefer to view the board in "flat mode", which you can get if you click on the box next to the 3 arrows.
I am extremely happy with my Odyssey. My friends are all amazed, and I never get tired of opening up my doors with a remote control
d.schnittka@na.manpower.com
And do the front speakers mute when the Nav system gives spoken instructions?
If both of these are "yes", there are probably several people in this forum interested to learn how.
Daryl
Thanks.
There is a way to get a sony controller to work with it, but for now, there's no way to use any steering wheel remote. So it's just sitting there useless. But the stereo has a remote control.
The installers, who did a very good job, had forgotten to connect the NAV audio. They have promised to correct this for free, so I don't mind. I believe they will be able to fix it, and he said he would be calling up a guy he knew at Honda for help if he needed it.
By the way, that is a very nice saxophone.

In addition to accessories, he's always provided me with good service and prices on repair or replacement parts.
So, for some more commercial spam, I can highly recommend both rwahonda (http://profiles.yahoo.com/rwahonda) and Trevor at Honda Accessories (www.honda-accessories.com). Thanks to Trevor, I hope to post some pics of the 2001 foglights on our 2001 LX by this weekend.
As tempting as it may be, please do not respond to to these posts. If it doesn't magically disappear within 48 hours, let me know.
Thanks!

Vans host
excuse me if this has already been covered. I just
received my roof rack through the mail and am
having trouble installing it. The instructions
tell me to insert the self-tapping torx head screws
into the cross bars when attaching them to the
side rails. This is proving difficult as the torx
heads on these screws are rounding off. Are these
screws supposed to tighten up all the way or do
they stay somewhat loose to allow the rails to be
moved front and back. Anyone with experience
putting on this roof rack please help. If anyone
knows what size bolt and threads per inch I could
tap the holes making it much easier. I hope I'm
not the only one that ran into this problem.
Hope this helps and someone can address the real problem.

I've been away for a while. Was very busy trying to get things out of the way before my shoulder surgery on 16Nov. Still doing therapy to regain motion, but am at least able to type w/ both hands now.
On to the question- I did a search of this topic and didn't find any answers, but please forgive me if this is old hat. What is the current status on the tranny noise (which sounds like soft valve clatter) at 50mph and above? Any cures?
I saw jkrolak trolling about in my search. He mentioned something about "extended warranty on the engine and transmission..." "...only if you complain to your dealer...". What's up with this, or is this just add'l troll droppings?
While I'm at it, I'm still having sliding door sticking, mostly after a rain (oddly enough) and there is now an intermittent rattle in that door.
Any permanent cures found. (Lube of seals has not been a long-term cure for us.)
thnx
Things to keep in mind:
Canadian Odyssey's are not covered under the Honda warranty unless registered in Canada by a Canadian citizen before being registered in the US. An Alberta resident who buys and registers (and pays taxes) on his Odyssey in Alberta and then moves to the California and registers in California will have a warranty. A resident of California buying in Alberta will not. Many dealers with the gray market Ody's provide some sort of warranty, but read it carefully.
Canadian Odysseys have a couple more features not available on US models - heated mirrors, low washer fluid indicator.
Canadian Odyssey's sold in the US usually have the speedometer, odometer, and temp indicator (EX) changed over from metric to US measures. Whenever an odometer is changed out, it can cause trouble at resale time. The dealer should give you a certificate which indicates the mileage at odometer change out to "certify" the mileage on the van. Even with this certificate, some used car buyers are leery.
I personally would stay away from a Canada market unit. Too many issues for me.
Not definitive, but some answers for you:
1. No final fix on the transmission noise at around 50 mph.
2. I think one guy demanded and received a free extended warranty (Honda Care?) after they replaced his transmission (I think not for the above problem but for the older klunk problem).
3. Someone else mentioned a threaded rubber rattle-prevention fitting on the edge of the doors (sliding and otherwise) that you might look for and attempt adjusting.
Get well quickly. We've missed you in here. :-)
PS. I think I'm being confused with a silt covered Englishman-ape.
They give some information on them but nothing in the installation instruction area yet so no way of telling if it will fit other years.
-Trevor
piltdownman: There was no silt-slinging intended in my question. ;-)
-and Thanks for the welcome back and good wishes.
Therapy's moving along. I was a little disenchanted at first as I didn't realize how much lost motion and strength I'd have post-op. I had full motion before the surgery, so when, after 1 week, I could only lift my arm about 30 degrees, I was distraught. However, my surgeon's visit Monday was a little encouraging. You know, they usually twist and pull you enough to bring tears to your eyes, but the motion he put me thru was not even the least bit painful. He didn't push the limits of my progress at all, so I guess I'm making better than normal progress. Also, the therapist was skeptical about my surgeon's orders for only 2 or 3 sessions (per my request) to learn the exercises instead of continually going to the therapist. However, by the end of my session TUesday, the therapist said he didn't think I needed even a 2nd visit unless I had a question or developed a new prblm. He did say it would be at least 4 to 6wks before I regained full motion w/ no pain, and then strengthening starts. I'll just have to be patient. But I've got to be back in business by early spring for
SAILING! My boat's interior is still spartan, but I've got the essentials just about how I want them and NEED to do more sailing in 2001 than I did this year. (Only 5 trips)
Well, gotta go. Have a relaxing and holy Christmas.

We just installed the Cosco Triad carseat with the LATCH hooks to the built in anchors in the 2nd row of our 2001 - front facing the fit is tremendous.
I highly recommend this seat in this van - it was easy to install and is rock solid. I think they are only sold at K-mart and cost about $80.00 - well worth replacing our other carseat which was in but not as tight as this.
Susan
What is the weight range for the Triad?
We are in rear-facing mode right now. The LATCH system for carseats is great! It really snugs the seat in. Also, with the LATCH system, you can use the second row with the seats together AND put the seat in the middle seat. You wouldn't be able to do that with a seat belt. (It would obstruct access to the third row and not provide a tight fit.)
I've also included some links on Odyssey safety.
http://www.caviller.com
Do either have built-in locking clips to hold a seatbelt in place for times when you cant use the latch system?
Do either have a one-button adjustment on the tightness of the harness or do you have to remove the seat and fiddle around in back?
I'd been hoping for a latch version of the Britax Roundabout, but I might not be able to wait that long...
Thanks for posting the info.
It has one button for adjusting the tightness of the belts (very easily). Please note that when you need to adjust the height of the shoulder straps, you do need to re-thread them through the new holes.
I wish these were around before.
My complaint: The spray is too low, and too weak. It did not spray up to my eye level, and it sprays far too sparsely.
Anyone experience this? Do you think that there is an adjustment of any kind that could be made to fix this?
This is a big disappointment for this Yankee. It's a definite negative for winter driving, so I hope I can find a solution.
I do plan to call my friendly Honda service rep and see if he can tell me anything, but thought I'd get your wonderful feedback too!
Thank you!
P.S. ~ Since my last post a while ago: I did get my pull-to-the right problem fixed... and the loaner WAS covered-- as I was first told it would be when the contract was sold to us. (That became an issue when I first brought it in to the dealership for repair.)
Rgds,
Marcia
Trevor, I sent you an email earlier this week asking if the new rectangular looking ones are in. I sent it via the contact us part of your website. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered them... and look forward to getting them soon! They look really nice on Caviller's van.
And I also ordered a few more things-- the cross bars for the EX for one. I really agree with a comment way back... why sell a "roof rack" if you're only giving half of what's really needed?
Rgds,
You can get both the CD and tape, on our 2K1 EX, it came with the CD and we ordered the tape from Trevor and installed it.
The dealer asked when we bought the van if we wanted to add the tape...but not at 385. so we got it for 135 from http://www.honda-accessories.com.
In the event fog does occur on the inside of the windshield, you can simply turn the A/C back on with another touch of a button. I'm glad Honda included a manual override.
