They are halogen. Just low powered 60/55 watt (max allowed by law, btw).

More power is available for off road use. *:o)) You just have to know where to get them.

CU says that the Honda van does NOT match Hondas prior reputation for quality and reliability. Please read the Oddyssey problems forum. It is strikedly evident that Honda does not improve their van from year to year. The same problems that were there in 1999 are still there in 2001. CU ranks the van AVERAGE, I did not. The extended warranty on the engine/transmission is only available if you complain to your dealer, otherwise it remains at 36/36 (the shortest warranty on any van). Be sure to buy the extended warranty if you purchase an Oddyssey. happy motoring! :-)

The recall is to replace the "Multiplex Control Module" that controls dash lights which are failing in some 2000 Odys...like mine.
Anyone know the location of this module and what if anything has to be removed to get at it? Is it in the engine compartment?
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
It's inside, under the dash on the driver's side next to the driver's side fuse box.

It's a 10 minute job to replace it, although I think it's rated at 30 minutes.

One thing I have noticed about CU reliability ratings is variability. For example, cars with the same engine but different brands and body styles (for example, shared engines in some Mitsubishi/Chrysler products, Ford/Mazda products, Geo(Chevrolet)/Toyota products and even products within a line which have the same engine eg Firebird/Bonneville) will have varied reliability ratings probably depending upon buyers (eg sporty cars w/ same engine ALWAYS do worse then the sedan). Perhaps minivan users have a profile in line with more wear and tear (or perhaps the opposite, making this all the more sinful of Honda to manufacture an "average" reliability vehicle).
While CU does its best to compile objective ratings (and I applaud them for this) there are many confounding variables that it is probably impossible to take into account. A good example is the gov't safety ratings. A car like the Miata does fairly well despite its tiny size, but probably because it is often a 3d car and locked in the garage when it snows and rains, resulting in less collision risk and a good insurance performance. Large cars like Mercury Grand Marquis, while probably umong the safest, are also favored by older drivers who have a higher crash frequency and may experience more injury in a collision given their often more frail bodies, thus pulling down the loss experience and safety data from an otherwise very safe model. It's NOT all in the numbers - it's all in how you interpret them.

If you need a source for identifying available bulb replacement/alternatives, try out www.nextcollection.com. They sell mostly PIAA and Raybrigs. I got my PIAAs from them. Their prices are competitive. Susquehanna Motors is a good source for Hella bulb replacements.

I believe all cars today have halogen headlamps. You may be confusing halogen with HID (high intensity discharge) headlamps which currently are avaialble on higher end cars. They have a blueish tinge to them. No your Odyssey does not have HID.
  • cavillercaviller Member Posts: 331
CR's reliability ratings are made from responses of surveys sent to their subscribers. Obviously, if a different demographic of driver buys one similar car over another, their responses to the subjectively worded surveys may vary. Also, by only surveying their subscribers, the subscribers may be biased by the overall ratings and previous reliability projections. CR's reliability reports are NOT scientific, but they are still probably a reasonable source of comparative data. For the last few years, CR has lumped "twin" cars and given them identical ratings. Before that, it was typical to see the "Domestic" half of a twin get a below average rating, while the identical "Japanese" half got a better rating. Again, by surveying its subscribers, its ratings can be biased by editorial content.

The NHTSA and IIHS crash tests should go strictly by the numbers, and not by interpretation. Those are scientifically controlled tests. Of course, they don't always predict what will happen in real world accidents where the masses and angles of the vehicles involved may vary. The loss ratings from the IIHS (death/injury statistics) are subject to interpretation. While these figures do have a component of real crashworthiness in them, they also have elements of accident avoidance and driver profile as well.

We bought a 2000 Odyssey in July. Love the car,
however at about 2000 miles I noticed a heavy
accelerating noise (like the sound you hear when a
semi-truck downshifts when they pass you) when I
would go over 45 mph. It seemed like it occured
just as you would shift into 5th gear (I guess that
is considered overdrive). It may have been there
all along but in our excitement of having a new
car, and stereo, we always had a cd playing and I
never listened closely, but I don't think that was
the case. Maybe I am wrong. The sound goes away
when you release the gas pedal and resumes when you
press down again. I also think it makes the noise
at a lower gear only it is just softer, now that I
have really listened. I took it to the dealer.
They said that it was fine. It was consistent with
Odysseys all across the board and probably due to
too high of octane gas. They said to use only 87.
My husband had used higher octane about then so I
figured they were right. Now, nearly 2500 miles
later and only low octane fuel I still hear and
feel the sound. Question. Is this true for other
Odyssey owners or should I make a fuss about it and
go back to the dealer. I am worried I am ruining
my new car by letting the problem go, if it is
really a problem. If not, I guess we bought a
noisey car. Thanks for your help.

Okay, it's been a while since I last posted here, but I've been enjoying my van too much. I have an EX with NAV

I just thought that as a college student, some people might be interested in my opinions of the vehicle.

First of all, I love this van. Great power, comfortable, and as edmunds would say, a "cavernous" interior. I regularly lug 3-4 saxophones around and can still fit 5 other people in.

I have driven my Odyssey to school and back about 6 times - that's a total of 12, 2 1/2 hours trips, and the van is very comfortable compared to a Land Rover Discovery I used to haul things back and forth last year.

There are only 2 complaints I have about the van.
    1) only minor, but the power seat controls are too easy to rub against when getting in and out. Then I can never remember where I had it set comfortably. no biggie.

    2) the sound system is atrocious. absolutely unacceptable. The sound quality was horrible, and with work you could either get it to sound harsh or muddy, but that was it. I also found that the CD player HEATED UP MY CD's!!
The good news is that I would not replace the factory speakers. I had a new system installed (which I've never done before in any other car).

This system includes a 200 watt amp, an 8" sub, and a new head unit. For the sub the installers constructed a box. I had them remove the center tray, detach the top of it, and reattach it to the top of the box.
The head unit is the real sweet part. I don't know how many of you have heard of the empeg. It's an in-dash MP3 player. It's reeeeeally expensive, but it's well worth the price. Check it out at www.empeg.com
You can see pics of my installation here:
    http://empeg.comms.net/cgi-bin/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=install&Number=21055&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5

I prefer to view the board in "flat mode", which you can get if you click on the box next to the 3 arrows.

I am extremely happy with my Odyssey. My friends are all amazed, and I never get tired of opening up my doors with a remote control :)

i own a 1999 honda odyssey. i had fog lamps added by the dealer. one of the fog lamps was hit by a stone which cracked the lense. the dealer wants $144 plus labor to replace one fog lamp!! any ideas where i can buy a honda fog lamp off the internet at a more reasonable cost??? thanks.

Did you get the steering wheel mounted controls to work with the new stereo?

And do the front speakers mute when the Nav system gives spoken instructions?

If both of these are "yes", there are probably several people in this forum interested to learn how.

Thanks for the post. I'll give them a call and have them send me some cover samples. Glad to hear they include covers for the head and armrests also. Maybe some extra padding for the armrests, too!! ;-)

I haven't kept up with this forum for a while so excuse me if this has already been covered. I just received my roof rack through the mail and am having trouble installing it. The instructions tell me to insert the self-tapping torx head screws into the cross bars when attaching them to the side rails. This is proving difficult as the torx heads on these screws are rounding off. Are these screws supposed to tighten up all the way or do they stay somewhat loose to allow the rails to be moved front and back. Anyone with experience putting on this roof rack please help. If anyone knows what size bolt and threads per inch I could tap the holes making it much easier. I hope I'm not the only one that ran into this problem.

Planning on buying a Honda Ody EX. Any one's experience or comment about Houston Area Dealerships, Price and Availability would be appreciated. Looking to get this fairly soon (at least get in line).
    Thanks.
  • dignan17dignan17 Member Posts: 16
Unfortunately, for now the answer to both questions is no.

There is a way to get a sony controller to work with it, but for now, there's no way to use any steering wheel remote. So it's just sitting there useless. But the stereo has a remote control.

The installers, who did a very good job, had forgotten to connect the NAV audio. They have promised to correct this for free, so I don't mind. I believe they will be able to fix it, and he said he would be calling up a guy he knew at Honda for help if he needed it.

By the way, that is a very nice saxophone.

I got my Odyssey from David McDavid, they have more allocation than any one else in tow, I waited three weeks for my van, 300.00 off MSRP. you may get it cheaper else where but much longer waiting...

I actually purchased my odyssey from a dealer who posted on the Yahoo Odyssey forum. Though unlike these posers, he is a regular, helpful contributor to the forum and posted the price and details on the forum, too. I got the van over a month ahead of when mine was due where I ordered it, and got a much better deal than any other dealers offered, too.

So, for some more commercial spam, I can highly recommend both rwahonda (http://profiles.yahoo.com/rwahonda) and Trevor at Honda Accessories (www.honda-accessories.com). Thanks to Trevor, I hope to post some pics of the 2001 foglights on our 2001 LX by this weekend.

...who is writing our URL address in every dealership restroom around the country? :-) The Ody topics have seen more than its usual share of soliciting in the past two weeks. I suppose we should be flattered by the attention, but it is a violation of the guidelines.

As tempting as it may be, please do not respond to to these posts. If it doesn't magically disappear within 48 hours, let me know.

I know your problem is that the screws are too tight and I have no experience with the roof rack in question to help you out with but I would double check the size of the Torx driver you are using. I have found it VERY difficult to round a Torx fastener when using the right driver and I have often thought I was using the correct one until I find the next size up works even better. One size smaller driver seems to work well until I apply some real torque and then I'm already in trouble.
Hope this helps and someone can address the real problem.

We are planning to purchase a 2001 Odyssey LX. As we were told that the wait might be up to 3 months we approached a couple of dealerships. One called us up within two weeks telling us he had an LX with just the options we wanted. When we called the other dealer (as a courtesy), he told me to be careful that "it's not a Canadian Odyssey." He said that Canadian Odysseys are different than American ones (which seems logical). Is there anything to this? I thought all Odysseys were mfg'd in Canada. Thanks in advance.

    Hi, guys and gals.

I've been away for a while. Was very busy trying to get things out of the way before my shoulder surgery on 16Nov. Still doing therapy to regain motion, but am at least able to type w/ both hands now.

On to the question- I did a search of this topic and didn't find any answers, but please forgive me if this is old hat. What is the current status on the tranny noise (which sounds like soft valve clatter) at 50mph and above? Any cures?

I saw jkrolak trolling about in my search. He mentioned something about "extended warranty on the engine and transmission..." "...only if you complain to your dealer...". What's up with this, or is this just add'l troll droppings?

While I'm at it, I'm still having sliding door sticking, mostly after a rain (oddly enough) and there is now an intermittent rattle in that door.
Any permanent cures found. (Lube of seals has not been a long-term cure for us.)
    thnx

Honda North America is trying to discourage the cross border sale of Odysseys. In Canada, the Odyssey seems to have less demand and as such some US dealers and consumers are crossing the border to purchase.

    Things to keep in mind:

Canadian Odyssey's are not covered under the Honda warranty unless registered in Canada by a Canadian citizen before being registered in the US. An Alberta resident who buys and registers (and pays taxes) on his Odyssey in Alberta and then moves to the California and registers in California will have a warranty. A resident of California buying in Alberta will not. Many dealers with the gray market Ody's provide some sort of warranty, but read it carefully.

Canadian Odysseys have a couple more features not available on US models - heated mirrors, low washer fluid indicator.

Canadian Odyssey's sold in the US usually have the speedometer, odometer, and temp indicator (EX) changed over from metric to US measures. Whenever an odometer is changed out, it can cause trouble at resale time. The dealer should give you a certificate which indicates the mileage at odometer change out to "certify" the mileage on the van. Even with this certificate, some used car buyers are leery.

I personally would stay away from a Canada market unit. Too many issues for me.

Welcome back! I hope the healing and probably-painful therapy is going well.

Not definitive, but some answers for you:
    1. No final fix on the transmission noise at around 50 mph.
    2. I think one guy demanded and received a free extended warranty (Honda Care?) after they replaced his transmission (I think not for the above problem but for the older klunk problem).
    3. Someone else mentioned a threaded rubber rattle-prevention fitting on the edge of the doors (sliding and otherwise) that you might look for and attempt adjusting.

Get well quickly. We've missed you in here. :-)

Does anyone know anything about the Kelton Bassworks subwoofer from Honda for the Odyssey? I have noticed that a couple of the online Honda parts places have it listed with no price and a January availability. I also saw it in the accessory display at my local dealer (I didn't get a chance to ask anyone for more detail). It apparently fits under the driver's seat. It may only work with the 2001's.

Thanks for the feedback on Canadian Odysseys. I've called 3 dealers now and one tells me that they're all made in Canada (the one selling me the car), one says that there are Odysseys from Canada which have "issues" and Odysseys from Ohio, and a third dealer that says they all come from Japan. I guess I'm just a little suspicious because after being told I'd have to wait 2-3+ months, they've got almost exactly the car I want in 10 days. (Whaddaya mean "don't I trust them?")

PS. I think I'm being confused with a silt covered Englishman-ape.
  • sfearingsfearing Member Posts: 31
All US and Canadian Odysseys are made in Canada with differences for each market. I don't know where the Japanese market "La Great"s are made.
  • hondaaccessoryhondaaccessory Member Posts: 74
Honda hasn't given out much information on them yet. January might be a bit on the early side to expect them since Honda only says "early 2001" and they said October on the fog lights and they were almost into December before they arrived.

They give some information on them but nothing in the installation instruction area yet so no way of telling if it will fit other years.

    -Trevor
  • timothyadavistimothyadavis Member Posts: 322
are also Canadian-built Odysseys. There are Japanese-built Odysseys but they are the older, 4-passenger-door design that was sold here 1995 until 1998 (thus the renaming of the bigger, luxury-to-the-Japanese market version as La Great there).

piltdownman: There was no silt-slinging intended in my question. ;-)

    Thanks for the update.
-and Thanks for the welcome back and good wishes.

Therapy's moving along. I was a little disenchanted at first as I didn't realize how much lost motion and strength I'd have post-op. I had full motion before the surgery, so when, after 1 week, I could only lift my arm about 30 degrees, I was distraught. However, my surgeon's visit Monday was a little encouraging. You know, they usually twist and pull you enough to bring tears to your eyes, but the motion he put me thru was not even the least bit painful. He didn't push the limits of my progress at all, so I guess I'm making better than normal progress. Also, the therapist was skeptical about my surgeon's orders for only 2 or 3 sessions (per my request) to learn the exercises instead of continually going to the therapist. However, by the end of my session TUesday, the therapist said he didn't think I needed even a 2nd visit unless I had a question or developed a new prblm. He did say it would be at least 4 to 6wks before I regained full motion w/ no pain, and then strengthening starts. I'll just have to be patient. But I've got to be back in business by early spring for
SAILING! My boat's interior is still spartan, but I've got the essentials just about how I want them and NEED to do more sailing in 2001 than I did this year. (Only 5 trips)

Well, gotta go. Have a relaxing and holy Christmas.

For anyone out there in van-land with babies or toddlers.

We just installed the Cosco Triad carseat with the LATCH hooks to the built in anchors in the 2nd row of our 2001 - front facing the fit is tremendous.

I highly recommend this seat in this van - it was easy to install and is rock solid. I think they are only sold at K-mart and cost about $80.00 - well worth replacing our other carseat which was in but not as tight as this.

    Susan
  • van_fanvan_fan Member Posts: 8
I will have to look for the Cosco Triad. We just purchased a Fisher-Price Safe Embrace II seat with the LATCH system. It cost us $149 minus 20% coupon at Babies R US. It was the only LATCH system child seat I could find. Yours is definitely less expensive.

What is the weight range for the Triad?

We are in rear-facing mode right now. The LATCH system for carseats is great! It really snugs the seat in. Also, with the LATCH system, you can use the second row with the seats together AND put the seat in the middle seat. You wouldn't be able to do that with a seat belt. (It would obstruct access to the third row and not provide a tight fit.)

  • cavillercaviller Member Posts: 331
Are both the Triad and Safe Embrace II real snug? If you push or pull on them, does the seat wiggle or does the car wiggle?

Do either have built-in locking clips to hold a seatbelt in place for times when you cant use the latch system?

Do either have a one-button adjustment on the tightness of the harness or do you have to remove the seat and fiddle around in back?

I'd been hoping for a latch version of the Britax Roundabout, but I might not be able to wait that long...

    Thanks for posting the info.
  • van_fanvan_fan Member Posts: 8
The Safe Embrace II is really tight when installed. It does have built in locking clips for regular car seat belts.

It has one button for adjusting the tightness of the belts (very easily). Please note that when you need to adjust the height of the shoulder straps, you do need to re-thread them through the new holes.

I wish these were around before.

I did see a bulletin yesterday that I think was for manual slidding doors and involved replacing the entire door seal. This is supposed to repair the sticky door problem. I have had continued success lubing the upper sub seal with Shin Etsu but if this hasn't worked for you then call your dealer and see about that bulletin. If I remember I will bring home the number on monday..

Today was our first winter weather experience with the new EX. I was very disappointed with the poor performance of the windshield washer. I was on the interstate during a light snow and around lots of trucks, so the van needed frequent sprays by the washer to keep the windshield clear and clean for safe driving.

My complaint: The spray is too low, and too weak. It did not spray up to my eye level, and it sprays far too sparsely.

Anyone experience this? Do you think that there is an adjustment of any kind that could be made to fix this?

This is a big disappointment for this Yankee. It's a definite negative for winter driving, so I hope I can find a solution.

I do plan to call my friendly Honda service rep and see if he can tell me anything, but thought I'd get your wonderful feedback too!

    Thank you!

P.S. ~ Since my last post a while ago: I did get my pull-to-the right problem fixed... and the loaner WAS covered-- as I was first told it would be when the contract was sold to us. (That became an issue when I first brought it in to the dealership for repair.)

    Hi again.

Trevor, I sent you an email earlier this week asking if the new rectangular looking ones are in. I sent it via the contact us part of your website. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered them... and look forward to getting them soon! They look really nice on Caviller's van.

And I also ordered a few more things-- the cross bars for the EX for one. I really agree with a comment way back... why sell a "roof rack" if you're only giving half of what's really needed?

    Rgds,

Hi. I'm interested in the Odyssey but don't like the fact that you have to choose a cd player OR cassette player. Can you get both? Also, I test drove one and kept hitting the windshield wiper switch when I would shift the vehicle into gear. Is this something that I just need to get used to and I will eventually not hit it? Thanks for any help!

One more question-my friend has a Honda car and says that to use the defroster you have to run the a/c. Has this changed? It soounds cold to me!
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
Most cars run the A/C automaticly when you run the defrost and have for years.Honda has just recently made it that way on most of it cars but not all.If the A/C is ran in the fresh air mode with the defrost and heat on, your windows will clear alot faster than if the controls were not set that way.
  • shaganastyshaganasty Member Posts: 23
I too pulled the wiper arm the very first time I drove the Odyssey. Have not done it since.
You can get both the CD and tape, on our 2K1 EX, it came with the CD and we ordered the tape from Trevor and installed it.
The dealer asked when we bought the van if we wanted to add the tape...but not at 385. so we got it for 135 from http://www.honda-accessories.com.
  • cavillercaviller Member Posts: 331
When you hit any selector with defrost (on a 2001 Odyssey at least), the A/C comes on automatically. You can then disable the A/C by pressing the A/C button, leaving the airflow through the front defrosters. This is handy in winter when you just want hot air to warm the windshield but don't need the A/C because there is no moisture or fog on the inside of the window.
  • mike734mike734 Member Posts: 128
STOP TURNING OFF THE A/C!! Please excuse the yelling but I can't understand all the efforts to turn off the A/C. The A/C makes dry air. If it is too cold for you, add some heat. That is what the red/blue temp control knob is for. I have to laugh when I see a car with all the windows fogged up driving down the road. I wonder how someone could spend $30,000 on a car and not read the manual.
  • cavillercaviller Member Posts: 331
In winter, you don't often need dry air, especially in areas where it is routinely below freezing. What you need is heat from the defrost vents to melt the frost and snow on the OUTSIDE of the windshield to assist the wipers. Turning off the A/C is effortless. The A/C is not helpful in these situtations, and simply consumes more gas and saps power.

In the event fog does occur on the inside of the windshield, you can simply turn the A/C back on with another touch of a button. I'm glad Honda included a manual override.
