I'm VERY interested (and have already driven) a '00 EX w/ 78k miles on it. This thing drove sweet, brakes seemed good, nav system, clean interior. However, I live in CA and it's from FL...not what I would typically consider as a purchase, but for the price, it seems reasonable.
I would like to take it to a dealer to have them "check it out" for me, but I don't really know what to ask them to look for. Anything in particular? Maybe pertaining to FL? I am DEFINITELY asking them about the tranny and past recalls...but that's about the extent of my list. Any suggestions? Is an extended warranty (~$1k-2k) worth tacking onto my purchase for "peace of mind"?

I wish you well and I'm sorry to hear you didn't like your Odyssey.

Thank God, you didn't buy a domestic and not like it!

Hopefully all will be well with your Sienna!

Chew on this guys . . . Quotes from Edmund's recent 2004 minivan competition:

"Under the hood, the Honda's 3.5-liter V6 purrs away at highway speeds and remains quiet and smooth under more aggressive acceleration. We were surprised to find that the Odyssey was slightly quieter than the Sienna with regard to both wind and engine noise."

"After driving them all back-to-back, I can say this with 100-percent confidence: the Honda handles the best, is the quietest at freeway speeds, has the most comfortable seating and has the second-best ride quality. The Sienna is its only real challenger. The Toyota has a very slight advantage in pure ride quality (very cushy), but that ride quality comes at a price in handling and steering feel (also very cushy)."

Pretty good for a 6-year old design aganist the new, state of the art competition in Sienna!! Quieter too!!

Latest issue of Car and Driver (June 04) tests mini vans and ranks Ody number one. Quite an accomplishment considering basic design of Ody goes back 6 years. It beat out the Toyota which is a recent design. Check it out.

after 6 years of admiring from afar we added a 2004 Ody EX RES to our driveway. We had our son in April and needed a larger vehicle for trips and Home Depot runs. Looked at everything from a Chevy equinox to a $2500 Ford Ranger. Decided on the Ody omce we saw the $259 lease deal.

I'm Anony's other half(male). As she said we have wanted an Ody forever. Even before "we" became three. As a three Honda family including the Ody we have confidence that we will enjoy this vehicle as much as our other two.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
by the C&D article. I hated the wallow of our '00 Windstar, and found the response and feedback from the '02 Ody to be quite engaging (for a minivan....). They summed up the driving experience very well, and in fact liked most aspects of the Ody. Sure, it is a bit behind the Toyota in some areas, but it is, after all, an updated '99 model year entry.

man we love this van. It is much more convenient and comfortable than our cars. Not to mention the V6 engine make it rather peppy. I am already considering buying it at the end of lease ... unless the 05 Odyssey changes my mind.

I am having a problem with my 2003 Odyssey LX. On a sunny day it gets really hot in the front seat. The sun beats down on the driver and passendger to the point of discomfort unless the AC is cranked, and then the passengers in the back complain that it is too cold, even with the separate AC controls.
I went back to the specs on the honda website and noticed that the LX does not have the "heat resistant glass" that comes with the EX. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I figure that I can have the windows tinted by the dealer or have the EX windows installed on the LX. Any idea how much this would cost.
    Thanks in advance

My 2000 EX shakes terribly when applying the brakes. It has done this for quite some time, but is really bad now at 70,000 miles. I know others have had this problem, but I've found no technical service bulletins for rotor problems on the NHTSA site. I called my Honda dealer parts department, who stated they've had no problems with the rotors, "otherwise my shelves would be full of them." Also, apparently the replacements have not been modified from OEM.
I hate to replace with the same parts if they are defective. Anyone have similar problems and found a satisfactory solution?
  • jmessjmess Member Posts: 677
The question is how many miles do the rotors have on them since they were turned (trued)? 70K is pretty good if they are the originals. Over time rotors get out of true on all cars and have to be replaced or turned. If I got 70K out of a set of rotors I would be happy.
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
But I agree Jmess. Sounds like he needs brakes. 70K is pretty good on a minivan's brakes. The way I drive I'd feel fortunate to get 70K out of a set of brakes.

    Hey All-

    Been a year since I bought (2003 EX-L w/RES) and I thought I'd check in...

First and foremost, its GREAT to finally see that people are getting better deals. Amazing to see what a little competition will do! And don't be ashamed about not getting that 2005 model. Remember that experience is on the side of all those boxy Ody late 2003 - 2004 models (my guess is - so will be the deals as well).

BTW - when did Honda start offering the RES in the EX without the leather package?!?!

    Where we are at...
    - Just turned 21000 miles - all dealer serviced
    - Daughter baptized the paint one week after we brought it home - ran her bicycle handle across the passenger slider
    - Wife got hit in the front driver wheel - much to everybody's surprise, the only damage was to the aluminum rim that was replaced at the "hitters" expense...
    - Needed to have doors lubricated because of "metal on metal" sound (dealer fixed)
    - Had a couple of phantom door closing failures and occasional beeping (door alarm only - no dashboard light) inside as you were accelerating - not necessarily fixed - they just stopped happening after last fall (however, lubrication above may have helped the issue - the door affected was the driver's side slider)
    - one unidentified noise when the TCS light come on (won't see that until the next snowfall)

    Here are my "happy" points:
-Mileage is just about as advertised 17/24 for our use on regular (87 Octane) unleaded gas...
-FABULUOUS ride; especially loaded up and long trips - just awesome!
-Extremely Kid friendly (cup holders, cleaning up spills off leather, the RES, etc.) - also - the RES has paid for itself by eliminating the phrase "Are we there yet?"

    Things that could be improved:
    - On windy days, the cabin needs the radio on a little louder...
    - Paint scratches VERY easily - almost too easily - and it really shows on the dark colors - buy a bottle of touch-up paint...
    - I do miss the split rear magic seat, however, I couldn't pass up the deal I got at the time (Invoice + $2)
    - I do have the brake linkage click - wish Honda could do something about this...

    Other notes:
    - One of the best pieces of advice I got off this site was the slow starting suggestion. If your Ody seemd to turn over more than it should during starting, try this: turn the ignition to the last position (RUN) prior the the cranking (START) position, let some of the idiot lights go out, THEN click to the START position. Since we started this routine, it starts almost immediately.

    - On buying an extended warranty... Wait until you are at the end of the first year of ownership or just under 12000 miles. Go back to the dealership and offer them COST for the 7/100000/0 ($861). I did this and they took it - no questions.

    Enjoy All!

You're right about 70K good for original brakes, however, the rotors have been warped since before 50K but weren't that bad, and only shuddered if you braked hard. Honda said they were fine. Now they are really bad even on normal braking and will have to be replaced. Others say don't bother turning them. My experience is brakes need to be looked at around 40K. With all the disc brake vehicles I've had, only one had rotors that deteriorated this badly, and it was a very heavy duty service vehicle. Looking for Ody owners that have experienced this, and if Honda has acknowledged a problem to them.

According to our salesman Honda began offering the EX cloth with RES about 6 weeks ago.

Can you give me the name of the dealership that you bought your van? I might call them about the extended warranty for my '03 Ody.
    Thanks!
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Interesting... I bought it over the net for $875 and was wondering if they were really making any money at this low a price. They must get some additional kickback from Honda based on volume of sales, otherwise it would be a money loser to sell at or near cost.

Has anyone got a recent quote for the extended warranty that they could share with us?

When I bought my 04 last weekend the finance guy said that Honda had increased the price of the extended warranties as of May 1st. He showed me a new Honda pricing guide date May 1st 2005 and opened it to page which he said showed his cost. I think it really showed Honda's suggested retail. I don't remember the exact price but it was over $1000 for the 7/100/0 Honda Care Warranty.

A possible cause for warped rotors is overtightened lug nuts. My 2000 Ody manual states that the tightening spec is 80 ft-lbs.

One might check their Honda dealer's service department to find out if they use hand torque wrenches rather than air wrenches when rotating or otherwise taking off and putting on wheels.

A new set of tires installed at a tire dealer with poor practices (air wrench tightening) could obviously cause rotor warping. When I bought a new set of tires for a car at an independent tire dealer 2 years ago, I asked about tightening before I made the deal. The dealer took me out to the shop and showed me the torque specification charts and wrenches that his installers use. I could also watch the installation in progress from a safe distance if I desired.

Can you tell me who you bought your warranty from? Thanks!

Because of the great rates and work that they have done with MANY folks on this site, I recommend going through Alton Blakley Honda in Kentucky. They were able to send me detailed information regarding the different warranties and pricing available.

I was actually NOT going to buy it, however, the fun I was having with my power slider made me think it may pay for itself in the long run...

rbell2 - if you still want my servicing dealer, shoot me an email (see my city in my profile) and I'll send you some info...

    Enjoy!

I just purchased a 2004 Honda Odyssey EX. I had never owned a minivan before. So, I'm not sure whether this is a common problem with minivans in general or all Odysseys or just my Odyssey.
I want to hear from other minivan owners, especially from Odyssey owners.

I feel a continuous vibration when riding in the 2nd and 3rd row seats even on smooth asphalt road. I don't feel it in the driver seat nor the passenger seat in front. It's definitely different from feeling the bumps on the road. The seats vibrate. Anyone noticed this? Thanks in advance.
  • jb_shinjb_shin Member Posts: 357
I felt the same when I rode in the 2nd and 3rd row seats while my wife drove. Actually it was much worse in the Pilot, to the point of being the worst ride I ever had in a car/suv. It felt like contstantly going over a wash board surface. While it was much less in the Odyssey, it was still quite noticeable. I am wondering if air pressure is set correctly, as cars are often pumped up with air to prevent flat spots on tires.

If that is how they normally ride, neither will be in my garage.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Just when I think I've heard it all...

The tires are either over inflated or in need of a wheel balance.

I have, literally, ridden in the back of hundreds of Odysseys and Pilots and have never felt this.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Sylvia lifted my post as I violated a Town Hall rule by mentioning names of sales staff. My bad.... So here is the post again, edited.

Now this was over a year ago, but I worked with Alton Blakley Honda in Kentucky. The van was about a year old with almost 12k miles when I decided to do it. My local dealer was talking $1200 or so at the time. They charged me $875.

But the middle seats ride a nicely as the fronts. Maybe the tires are over inflated.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
how gee would know how the ride is in the middle seats when he won't get out of the driver's seat long enough to find out? :)
  • 1997montez341997montez34 Member Posts: 202
The tires may need a balancing or may be defective. My in-law's Camry had this same problem.
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
it worked on my sister's van, which vibrates like a massaging chair when the seat is empty and the van is going 65 mph.

let's ask gee about 3rd row comfort...
  • gee35coupegee35coupe Member Posts: 3,387
I folded the third row down when we bought the van. We'll probably never see it again.

The wife and I decided on an ODY EX. A dealer we've been speaking with says that they can get the price between $24000 and $24500. Should we be pushing for invoice or below invoice? Is this reasonable? What is a fair "OTD" price?

We're planning a road trip and need a roof top carrier for our 2000 EX. Anybody have some experience with these that they can share? We need maximum cargo space as we're bringing 3 kids and grandma and more junk than should be allowed on a trip...
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
you might try posts 461,2,3 over in the "Post your Van Mileage Here" forum for a description and links to the soft Kanga Roof Pouch as one possibility. FWIW, I used a 10cu. ft. "Typhoon" model on an LX (without cross bars - just rails) and I thought it was great and viable alternative to a hard-sided carrier.

I'm looking for middle row seats from a 2001 or newer Odyssey, preferably gray fabric. I'm hoping there's a big salvage yard in the Washington, DC area. Brandywine's doesn't have any seats.

i have had 11 hondas, 3 odysseys. you dont know crap ! my 2001 ody. is the worst honda i have ever owned, after trans repl. car shakes severely, 16 tires at 39,000 12 alignments - had to fight for nearly 2 yrs to get 1 seatbelt fixed !!! you get the award for being a honda cronie. read the other info all over the net including at dealer rater.com- honda screws its customers-and wont back its own warranty, eventually you wont have a job, why ? honda sucks !
  • rocky76522rocky76522 Member Posts: 7
i have had this same problew w/ my 2001 odyssey. after 16 tires, 12 alignments, and 2 rims also a new trans, the dealer states no problem w/ van, all in my head ! report it to nat trans hwy dept. while there, read all the tsbs concerning our vans. honda wont fix it-a lot of people have had to get 2-3 trans. replaced. sell it and buy something else, i am !
  • rocky76522rocky76522 Member Posts: 7
11 hondas, 3 odysseys. never have run anything but 87 octane regular unleaded. you are just wasting your money ! if engine starts pinging or knocking take to dealer, moisture in gas ?

hello,we had a 95 ody. all of the abs sensors needed to be replaced at 47,000 miles ! dealer said $ 240.00 per wheel i traded it in the next week ! but, they did tell us we would have no abs, but the brakes would still work ! good luck, i tried to post once before, i had to turn our firewall off this time ! it worked !
  • rocky76522rocky76522 Member Posts: 7
also had to have front brake pads replaced at around the same time you did, also many others are, go to the nhtsb site and make a complaint about the brakes ! ck out the tsbs, and beware of the bent rotors and tranny noises !
  • aspesisteveaspesisteve Member Posts: 833
    strongly recommend a soft pack
    1. fits nicely between the cross bars
    2. fits odd shaped things better than a hard pack
    3. easy to store when not in use
    4. sits lower than a hard pack causing less air drag (I think)
    5. much MUCH cheaper -$35 a Target with all the ties downs you could need.
  • rocky76522rocky76522 Member Posts: 7
bad news, changed 2 wheels- all at my cost, 16 tires, new front disc pads, new tranny, still got the shimmy !!! honda is giving me fits, and wont even admit to the problem !!! ck out some posts here concerning the sub frame, my vibration problem got a lot worse after honda changed the trans. have you noticed the right side drift when taking hands off wheel while driving, good luck, after a year and im still fuming w/ no success yet !

IF an Odyssey does not ride smoothly, it has bad tires or might be a rare lemon.

Thanks for setting us all straight about Hondas though. Maybe you should try writing a book about how to win friends and influence people while you are sitting there at the computer wasting O2.

New to forum...Just sat with my local dealer about the 05 and ordering process. I did see the new color chart, Honda will have 4 new colors on the 05 Ody, Silver Pearl, redesigned gold, mystic blue and light green (mint). Total of 9 colors available on the 05. He confirmed the moonroof will come standard on the EX-L. It also appears that the RES will only come in one color if the buyer wishes cloth seats, color is dark green however, dealer cannot confirm. All colors available in leather, I am also told the EX L RES will definaltely be less than 30,500. You may also purchase RES+Navi in one package. My dealership has already placed an 05 order and is accepting deposits on the first shipment due in Mid Sept. Expects one dealer demo to be shipped in mid Sept probably an LX model. Has anyone else sopke to a dealer on an 05? Mine is pretty straight forward with information, even spy pics!
