Can't help you on the alarm issue.
The alarm system is probably designed to go off if someone opens the hood while the vehicle is just sitting, in case someone tries to steal parts.
I would try keeping the keys in the ignition (perhaps in "accessory" mode before opening the hood and connecting the cables.
I had my battery drain once (kids left all the interior lights on), and the alarm did not go off when I jump started the car-- had keys in the ignition.
'03 Ody EX
And when you connect power to the battery, the alarm system has power then and realizes the hood is open (with no key in the ignition).
I think that certain Odysseys had more issues than others. Amongst the ones that I think had more problems than others would be the first ones off the assembly linen after the MMC (Late 2001 production) and the first ones off of the Lincoln, AL assembly line. (2003 maybe?)
Regarding the high MPG, I have gotten ABOVE the EPA estimates in my Odyssey quite a few times crusing down the freeway on cruise control. In the fuel economy area, the Odyssey is pretty good compared with some other alternatives for carting around 7 people. (Suburban, Excursion, etc)
The Odyssey won't nickle and dime you into poverty- sure, there may be problems, but in my case, once they're fixed the van is very solid.
On my Odyssey I've had the transmission replaced, the SRS sensor replaced, and the fuel tank seal replaced. (whatever that is
Sorry to hear of those problems. I have not had those problems with Ford or Chrysler. I have an 2002 Odyssey. If I did not own one already, I would be quite sceptical about their reliability. As it is, I am losing confidence in the Odyssey the more I hear from friends and acquaintances. Sometimes they say that they too have had to replace the transmission (some had to pay) and pay to fix the sliding doors. I have had a number of not so big things go wrong and my dealer gives me bad service too.
An occasional problem on this vehicle is failure of the third gear clutch in the Automatic Transmission. When the Automatic Transmission is replaced with a remanufactured Automatic Transmission, Honda recommends the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) be replaced to improve the durability of the Automatic Transmission. The cost to repair the Automatic Transmission is estimated at $2,400.00 for a remanufactured Automatic Transmission and $572.00 for labor. The cost to replace the PCM is estimated at $500.00 for parts and $32.50 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax. An occasional problem on this vehicle is failure of the optional Power Sliding Door. The cost to repair the Power Sliding Door is estimated at $233.50 for parts and $227.50 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

Me: I disagree. While most people would come looking for answers to their problems if there are a lot of people posting problems it would be resonable to assume that the car has a lot of problems.
The 95-04 problem forum has over 6,000 posts.
The Sienna for 03 and older has 3541
The MPV for all years is 4389
The G.Cravan for all years 3938
Speaking of which- I had this replaced too I think when my Odyssey failed the state of Tennessee emissions check. You have to pass to renew your plates and the van took the test 3 times and finally passed on the 3rd time.
I've moved your post to a discussion where it'll be more at home and receive more feedback:

My advice is to ensure that you get a genuine Honda Care warranty and shop around for quotes. I would expect you would be able to get one for about 1K. That is very low miles for an 04, you should jump on it!

Past Vans:
'00 Ford Windstar SE (2 year lease): Tranny replaced around 10k miles. Front rotor and pads replaced after picking up a rock (could happen to any vehicle). Needed work on drivers side power slider to make it close reliably. Power seat died twice (switch problems that burned out motors). Decent vehicle overall.
'97 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport (3 yr lease): Steering rack failed, front left caliper seized up destroying rotor, all doors (manual sliders) needed adjustments more than once, multiple evap emissions leaks resulting in 6-7 dealer trips, tranny slipped and was going west when we gave it back. Again, decent vehicle overall.
Bottom line - Honda more reliable of the three, and more fun to drive / easier to live with on a daily basis. No vehicle is perfect.

BTW: ...after all the tranny bashing, who has the most miles on an original '99 -> '01 tranny? My Ody has been nothing but bliss!!! I love the V6 and the smooth drivetrain... at 75+K miles...
Will Pilot wheels fit an Odyssey (both 5 lug) and has anyone used a tire this large? I did a search and found many use 235/60/16 but found no mention of 235/70/16. Vehicle is used as around town work van and a little speedometer error is acceptable. Thanks.
Does anyone have any idea what caused this to happen?
Thanks in advanced!
Depending on the type of fault, the CEL might stay on forever, or for as short as the next 4 engine start cycles. Regardless, the most recent error code and snapshot data should remain in storage for 40 more restarts, or until cleared by a scanner instruction or a battery disconnect. So either you are waiting too long before bringing it in for them to check and the data is lost, or they are reading out valid data but not telling you what they found.
You mentioned gas cap. Did they say it failed a system pressure/vacuum test, or was that just a guess? Get them to tell you the code and conditions, then maybe we can take a stab at what is up.
Steve
They performed mechanical tests and all solenoids operated normally. This is the same that I have been told at several dealers.
