I was concerned that you were fast approaching the 100K warranty period without a replacement tranny for a known manufacturer defect.
There is no reason why your engine should not last for another 100K. Changing your oil and filter per recommended intervals or more frequently is cheap insurance.
ENJOY!
Last night the "check engine " and "TCS" lights came on again, which were the only signs I had when my transmission went. I took the van to Honda this AM, thinking that probably my rebuilt transmission was failing as has happened to so many on this board.
What they tell me is that I have excessive carbon build up in the EGR valve, which they also referred to as the "manifold". This interested me because after having the van only 9 months, I was stuck on vacation at a Honda Dealership with the same problem. The service technician at that Dealership told me that carbon build up is caused by cheap fuel, so I have diligently purchased only name-brand, middle level fuel ever since then ... apparently to no avail since I am back in the garage with the seemingly same problem.
This local Honda dealership tells me that "this happens to all vehicles" and "is to be expected". He told me they will make this repair by "drilling holes in the EGR valve" and "inserting a teflon sleeve". This sounds very strange to me ... more like a recall-style fix rather than a true repair.
Anyone else have this experience? Or can anyone explain this "repair"? Cost was estimated at $250-$350.
Susan Melvin
PS Also, within the last week I have no illumination behind my odometer .... and fuse is NOT blown ... what's up with that?
I know people expect their Hondas to be perfect but things happen to ALL cars. You dealer is correct. EGR valves will carbon up after alot of miles.
It sounds like you may have some burnt out bulbs in your dash. Bulbs will burn out.
As far as having a "Whopping" 109k, big deal. I know people who have over 150k and never had this problem, of course they aren't driving Honda's.
Do a search on Edmunds for this problem and see how many people have complained about a clogged EGR.
Good luck.
If my existing Ody or any other vehicle were to last at least 100K mile before a check engine light comes on, I would not be disappointed. For me, changing the EGR or the oxy sensor in my garage should not be a problem then.
Ask any independant who works on all makes and models!
I can't remember other owners of minivans complaining about their EGR's like the people who own a Honda Ody. This problem was beat to death a while back with Ody owners. Didn't Honda extend the warranty for this problem to something like 80k?
Read Susan's post again. The fix requires the dealer to install "teflon" sleeves. That alone tells the average "Joe" that Honda's are having a huge problem with carbon in the EGR system. If there isn't a problem, why use the teflon? Honda isn't going to spend money researching a fix for a non-existing problem.
My advise to Susan was to call and talk to Honda HQ about this problem and tell them that this is a well known problem with Honda Ody. The dealer will make more money from Susan if she pays for this out of her pocket than if Honda covers the repair. The labor rate is less to the dealer when the manufacture is footing the bill rather than the customer. So don't look for much help from the dealer.
If this problem is not only with Honda Ody's, point me to the board that has as many complaints about clogged EGR as the Ody.
Have a 2004 Odyssey with DVD Player, but have been unsuccessful (to-date) getting home-burned DVD's to play in it.
I've only tried DVD+RW's... has anyone had success with DVD-R, DVD+R, or DVD-RW discs?
Thanks in advance!
It wasn't a big deal and I just accepted it as normal "things that happen".
The teflon insert may be a modification to reduce the chances of it clogging again?
Steve, Host
People in the past have been complaining about EGR's on Ody's with 40k having the EGR cleaned and having the same problem again and again. Show me where other makes are having this problem with the EGR, I have read plenty on the Ody boards in the past.
Gee, an 89 Buick would have had the old "tech" pushrod domestic engine, not the good stuff that Honda uses today. Get real.
I am sure some people here will say that I am picking on Honda again!
My point was, simply, that after over 100,000 miles, things break, wear out or get clogged. It's to be expected within reason.
My 89 Buick used the "old tech" 3800 engine that is still in use today. Great engines BTW.
That has nothing to do at all with an EGR valve.
So, at 100k a customer should be on their own to cope with problems that the manufacture can't fix? You may be selling, but I am not buying that!
I don't know if Susan's Ody ever had the recall done or not. People expect to repair somethings in a vehicle, but not the same part repeatedly.
Again, good luck Susan.
Thank you.
This car is so popular that I'm sure they all can't ride like this or no one would want it. My husband drives an SUV (Chevy Trailblazer) and he can't stand to be in my new minivan because it rides so rough. We've spoken with our salesman and next week we will go drive some of the other 05's to see how they compare to ours. If we can't find a solution (they suggested maybe shocks froze with our cold weather last week) then I'll probably have the first 05 used minivan for sale. Bummer...we had planned to keep this car for 10+ years (our last car was an 88 Caprice) and hate to lose money (including all that sales tax we paid). By the way, if we trade it in for another vehicle, do we pay sales tax on the full amount or just new car minus the trade in value? Other than the rough ride I truly love this vehicle!
Was this sound similar/same as when the sliding door(s) are open and the car is in gear, i.e. not in park. If that is the case and the sound is present even when the gear in Park, then I suspect that it may be a faulty/dirty sliding door sensor or the sliding door is not closedd properly.
By opening and closing the door, you may have corrected the problem. Is the same problem recurring under similar conditions.
This is simply a safety issue. If you had put the shifter in D,the alarm would still sound as this is the verbal warning system, because most folks dont look at the visual light on the instrument panel.
It covers all the REAR doors plus tailgate.Olso sounds when the shifter is in D or R and your kid tries to open the rear sliding door from the inside while driving.(sounds for 5sec.).Do the test yourself and u will see .I think it is a great safety feature, especially if the radio or res is on and you cant listen as what the back passengers are doing.
ps.you olso have to unlock all the doors with your remote from outside (press 2 times) before you can open any sliding door with your remote as well.
As for the folks with a BUMPY ride, simly deflate your tires to 33psi and that will solve the problem.
As for road noise,Michellin is the noisiest tire on the market, but one of the best and Honda uses them on all their vehicles.
Goodyear Avid Touring tires have very little road noise.
Good Luck,

The shop lead tech took a drive and noted the sound right away. With confidence, he said he had personally seen it a number of times and knew he could fix it....He indicated that on a number of ODYs that had this issue, the solution was to dismount / disconnect the strut from the strut tower, grind down some irregular welds at the strut / strut tower interface, apply a grease / lubricant to the area, and re-assemble.
And 19K miles later, it is still quiet!
I *think* that either the Acura MDX, the Pilot or the ODY had a TSB on the strut tower and this exact same issue... I remember seeing someone had posted a link to it. Maybe you can do some searching, or ask Steve the Host if he has a super secret means of doing an Advanced Forum Search.
Then again, maybe a kind soul with access to TSB contents can post something for you.
Anyway, look at message #110 in the Accura MDX Problems and Solutions Forum. It describes spot weld burs that needed to be ground down. This was pretty much exactly what they had to do to the front passenger strut tower on my ODY.
Hope it helps.
Good luck!
My sense is that it might be related to tire noise from the PAX tires in my case. On smooth asphalt, the ride is smooth and quiet.
If you learn anything, please post your findings. Thanks.
After that, if you are not having the red light on that door (panel), you have to go to the dealer and let them know the problem.
1) Is it reliable to replace the original front glass by the third party one (about $400) or I must use the original Honda's (provided by dealer only for more then $700) front glass only?
2) Is there any tricks which I should pay attention?
I'll appreciate any opinions and shared experience.
How did you get Honda to replace the transmission at 109,000? Who did you call and how much arm twisting did you have to do. My transmission just went at 116K
Will your insurance cover it?
Good Luck.
What I believe is happening is that a gentle closing/push just engages the first/one of the two latches or the first of two stages - this may be safety feature. A stronger closing/push gets both latches/stages engaged.
I believe that over time that it would be easier to accomplish both latches/stages with less effort as the resistance offerred by the door rubber weather stripping would be less. It may be possible to adjust the latches for an easier initial closing, but as the rubber weather stripping ages, rattles may occur. So this may be a trade-off...
Just some thoughts...
Does anyone have any experience with anything like this?
Before I leave the dealer I do a walk around my car to make sure they have not scratched my car. If they have done some damage it is harder to prove it once you have left.
Good Luck
