I'm thinking of buying a 1998 Ram 1500 4 X 4 with auto, Laramie pkg, power every thing, AM/FM CD, 360 engine, trailer group, max engine cooler, sliding rear window and the quad cab feature.
My question is; has anyone else out there bought a similar truck? What much could I expect to reasonably pay over invoice and how difficult is it to get these dealerships to accept Edmunds level invoice prices?
I'm in SE Georgia, but will travel up to 500 miles to find the BEST deal.

Well, it looks like I'm back to square one so to speak...I talked with a couple of Dodge dealers yesterday (ready to go with
my order for a Ram Quad 4x4 2500 with the V10) and they both told me that Dodge has the V10 series on restriction due to some
engine problem...both indicated that there may not be any more V10's come out this year! Has anyone else heard this story, or know what the "engine problem" is?

    Hi, folks.
I've read some input from truck owners in other newsgroups about how they've been having a heck of a time with tire wear on their RAM 2500 trucks. They mentioned cupping as one of the problems. One respondent said he almost completely eliminated the problem by pumping his tires up to 47 LBS.

Both the problem and this solution concern me. I have a buddy at work who, like me is going to be in the market to buy a new 4X4 pickup around August/September. Unlike me (a greenhorn when it comes to trucks) he has a lot of experience with 4X4 pickups. He told me that cupping is a fairly typical problem with 3/4 ton 4X4 pickups with the live axle-type front end.

Along with my note of the 20th, I really need some input from you more experienced guys out there. I'm going to be spending a LOT of money on this puppy, and I want to go into it with my eyes open. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!!

    Armadillo,

I was told, but have no experience, that frequent
tire rotation was critical for good wear on 4wd's.
What other chat groups have you found?

snakepit1, Have you tried Auto-By-Tel, or Carquest. They both will put you in contact with dealers in your area that will that will deal at invoice, or very close. Be sure to talk only to the contact person that they give you. (usually the sales manager) Call and talk to him on the phone before you go out to the lot. They sometimes will give a quote over the phone.

Armadillo: My brother works at a tire shop in Central Illinois and I trust his advice. He says he has seen a number of Ram trucks come through his shop with ~10000 miles on them and badly cupped front tires. He believes Dodge may not be getting the alignment right at the factory and it may be wise to have a reputable (not the dealership) alignment shop assess the alignment of your new truck. Of course this is only one part of keeping the tires in shape i.e., proper pressure, rotating them regularly etc. but without knowing whether the front end is aligned right in the first place, all that other stuff may not help anyway.

    Hi, Ron,
Thanks for your quick response. To answer your question about other chat groups, there's one out on www.truckworld.com. I found another one using the HotBot search engine, and then searched on Dodge Ram Pickups.

Your advice on rotation is well taken. I think what I'm beginning to learn is that the normal, common sense things associated with proper tire maintenance are ESPECIALLY important with 4X4 pickups.

Icepick, I appreciate your insights about front end alignment. I will definitely follow up on that when I get my truck. By the way, did your brother happen to mention if there's any difference between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton trucks with regard to problems? Or are they both equally this way? It's unfortunate that the dealers know less than specialty folks like your brother. On the up side, it's nice to know that folks like him are around.

You guys have been very helpful. I appreciate your adding to my education. Take care. (smile)

    Hello all,

Getting ready to take the leap and buy. Got my eye on a Ram 1500 Club or Quad Cab, SLT Short Bed. Still trying to feel out the dealers in the area regarding price. Looking for a dealer in the Southern California area willing to go close to the Edmonds dealer invoice (maybe $250 over?). They have their 3% holdback and currently a $500 dealer incentive, what more do they want! :) So if any of you out there have gotten a good deal in the Southern Cal market, let me know....
  • lynlyn Member Posts: 2
    Hi there,

I have been looking at 3/4 tons for a while. I currently have a 1/2 ton SLT and love it. Never have had any problems either. So reading all the negative comments scare me a little. BUT, I want to get a 3-4 horse gooseneck and need more power. Well, I have looked at the dodge quad cab, diesel, leather, tow pkg etc. I picked out what I wanted for I will have it for a long time. These diesels are supposed to last 200,000+ miles, right?? I am nervous about the trany because I prefer towing horses with an automatic. I am very worried though about trany and other problems I hear about. Plus I found a nice 97 3/4 Chevy. I think that truck would work too, it is gas though. The dealer said he has seen an overabundance of Dodges going through auctions...is he feeding me a line??? What are some thoughts??? I am at a loss. The Dodge dealer has given me a GREAT price on a 98 but basically will give me nothing for mine. In fact he has undershot Edmunds trade in by $3000!! If anyone has any advice I am very interested. Thanks!!! Lyn

There is a someone logged in as "mharde" who just picked up his Ram 2500 diesel within the past week. You might check some of the other topics related to diesels/fords/dodges/towing to see some of his comments.

I also was offered a great deal on the new vehicle last week, only to be low-balled on my trade-in by an almost equal amount. They said my truck was in above average condition and then offered me about $3,000 less than Kelley Blue Book "Good Condition" and about $4,000 less than Edmunds. The normal profit margin to the dealer on their average trade-in must be astronomical. I'm trying another strategy hoping to appeal to their business sense. If they don't offer me a fair value for my trade-in, then I'll buy the new truck from one of their competitors.

I posted a request earlier today about a '93 Extended Cab Diesel(4x4, 5 spd.) Would like to find a clean pickup to purchase for farm use, reliable 4x4 transportation for the wife and kids besides the mini-van (she put it in the ditch yesterday). I'm not concerned about the reliability; my dad's running a '91 with well over 150K - absolutely haven't touched the motor. They're harder on driveline joints than expected - farm work tends to be hard on suspension, but other than that, that pickup starts every single time and runs from 17-20 mpg. Would like to know what kind of room they have in back on the extended cab models for a couple of car seats. Don't see too many Ex-cab Dodges around. Thanks.
  • lynlyn Member Posts: 2
    Thanks Brutus,

I too am trying the same route, with not much luck. I told them I was real interested in their truck but needed a better deal for my "Wonderful" trade. They don't seem to be biting. I think I have a very laid back sales person too! joy.

I think I am going to trot off to the chevy dealer, see what they say.

Thanks again and good luck to you! Lyn

    Hey, everybody!

I'm a satisfied F150 owner who's coming to the end of my 5-year lease and I've heard some good things about the Rams. Plus, who could resist that sheet metal?? Having read every comment on this bulletin board, I'm sorry to hear about all the problems you've been having with the trannys -- but they seem to mostly deal with diesels?

For my own use, I'll be hauling a fair amount but won't be doing any towing, so I'm just looking at the 1500 series with a manual stick. Have you guys got a read on the dependability of these? (I'll check out the link to that "dependability site", too...)

Any info you can give would be appreciated. This is a great conference, loved reading the postings!

    Thanks!

Considering buying 98 1500 Club Cab 4WD 5.2L 5 speed short bed Laramie & Sport packages. Does anyone know if and when Dodge is going to be offering any factory to dealer or customer incentives? Also, I've done my homework about dealer costs. Is it reasonable to expect them to come down close to invoice? I've been looking at several area dealers for about the past month and it doesn't seem that these trucks are moving that well around here (Wisconsin). Am I better off waiting until summer or should I get serious now?
I really don't want to end up with a brand new 1 year old truck but I also need to get the best deal possible
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
Has nothing to do with the time of the year. It's all the dealer and how they choose to do business. I ordered my 96 Ram in February of 1996. Dealer gave me a price quote by mail of 3% over invoice a month earlier, and it never changed one penny from January til delivery in May.

When you're ready to buy, type up a spec sheet with the exact truck you want, including ALL the appropriate option codes. Mail copies to the sales departments of the dealers in your area, and request a price in writing for that exact vehicle. The good dealers will see that you are a knowledgeable consumer who knows what he wants without any song-and-dance sales pitch, and will give you a good price without a lot of bull or delay. Having a price in writing before you walk in the door makes the process a whole lot faster.

I just used Autobytel.com for a Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab and the dealer called me up 1 hr later with a itemized faxed quote of only $150 above invoice. I guess they figured since I knew their invoice price (which is listed on the web site) already it would be a waste of time to quote me a price that was way over invoice. Pretty good considering it usually takes a lot of time to get a sales person that low to begin with. I feel like I might be able to get a pretty good deal when I go back and mention the $400 college rebate, $500 dealer incentive and 3% holdback. Hopefully I will be able to get it under dealer invoice price. The only problem I can forsee is them trying to get me on the trade in. I'll keep you posted.
  • timmytimmy Member Posts: 4
Thanks kcram and HookEm for the info. I will be sending out requests for price quotes tonight. HookEm - you probably want to negotiate the trade in before you let them know who you are and what price you've been quoted. Stress how important the trade in is to the whole deal and how you won't be able to buy new unless you get a good price on the trade. Thanks again. Still interested in knowing if Dodge is planning any factory incentives on the 1500 Club Cabs.
  • HookEmHookEm Member Posts: 8
I spoke to 2 dealers yesterday here in Texas and they claim there is not a dealer incentive for the 1998 Dodge Ram pickups. This is weird because Edmund's says there is one. Made me look like a freakin' idiot when I argued to them about it.
  • jjd345jjd345 Member Posts: 3
I'm thinking of purchasing a Dodge, Cummings powered, 3/4 ton,. extended cab, long bed. I've heard what the dealers have to say and now I would like to hear from someone who has one. Pro and Con. Do you notice the desiel fumes in the cab? Are you getting around 16-18 towing? etc.
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
Anybody who recently ordered a 24v Cummins know what the lead time is once your order status is changed from a "BL" to a "D"? I'm in my seventh week.
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
606, BL I assume is build, and D must be deliver. Delivery is usually 10-15 days after it leaves the factory. Is your dealer not able to give you an arrival date? They should know how long it takes.. I hope you get it soon.....Mike
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
    Mike,

The way the dealer explained it to me....
As soon as the order was placed in Feb the order was given a BL status. Maybe BackLog, I don't know. As soon as all the parts are received to build the order moves to a D status, the vehicle given a serial #, and you can not make any changes
to the order. As soon as the order is scheduled for assembly on the production floor it goes to a
D1 status. Progressive statuses are Q-someting for final inspection and a few others for various delivery stages. I've been calling the dealer every Friday for status. I guess they don't/can't
know anything definite until it goes to a D1, actually scheduled on the floor status. Plus the salesman is no where near excited about when its cumming in than I am. I though that I could get an indication from a current buyer what the approx lead time is now.

How's your's running? How many miles you got on it now? Notice any difference in break-in performance?

    Ron
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Hi Ron, I have about 500 mi on it now. Its getting stronger the more I drive it. I only got 17 mpg on the first tank, but I guess thats pretty good, and should get better. I plan to make a 300 mi. trip this weekend and see what I get on the highway.
I hate ordering..Too much suspense. I can't stand waiting. I guess you feel the same way.
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
Mile, Ditto on ordering, This is the first vehicle
    I've ever ordered.(Feel like a kid!)

Have you pulled the fifth wheel yet? Is the 17 mpg
city driving. I hope it does a little better than that. Seems that I've heard somewhere that you got to do some serious pulling to get the engine broke in to the point you get the 20+ mpg milage. Go to get the engine HOT for a decent break in. I don't know if that's true or make up.

Man, is it cold here in Pa. tonite, coldest its been all winter.

Today I started to consider adding the Mopar Ventvisors to the order. Maybe Friday I'll stop by the dealership to check the status of the truck and order them.
  • jjd345jjd345 Member Posts: 3
    Hi Mike,
You seem to be doing what I want to do. I also have a 5th wheel and have questions as to performance Disel v. Gas. I have a F250 w/ a 460cid now and 105K miles. Stills pulls smooth with very little loss of power.
I also want to know about the mpg with the difference between the two. We are smogged down pretty good in Ca with gas engines and that why I want to go to disel

Hook'em: I didn't notice anyone responding to yours that your local dealers denied there is any incentive to them on Ram sales.
Anybody able to confirm? I would think any incentive is national program?
  • Knight1Knight1 Member Posts: 1
Has anybody had any problems with the newer Rams?
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
ron, I've heard same thing. As a mater of fact it kinda says that in the owners manual. It says, "engine run-in is enhanced by loaded operating conditions which allow the engin parts to achieve final finish and fit during the first 6000 miles."
Well I'm getting the wiring and brake control installed Saturday then I will be ready to go. I will be towing my 5th wheel to East Texas weekend after next, to South Texas in April, to Gulf Shores Alabama in May, to Indiana in June, and to Colorado in September. That should break it in pretty good...
    What are vent visors?
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
jjd, The diesel should pull a little better than the 460. (more torque) Diesel power feels different than gas. Its hard to explain, but you will like it. Its a more solid, longer lasting feel of power. (Like I said its hard to explain) You will like the mpg's, you could possibly double the mileage you get with the 460.
The only drawback is the noise, but allot of guys like that too.
What size is your 5th wheel?
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
mharde2, Also called "side window air deflectors" in jc whitney catalog. They are a smokey gray plastic part that attaches to the door just to the front and top of the side windows. I guess they allow you to have the window cracked open approx 1" for ventilation and not worry if it rains. I wasn't that interested in them until this week when a guy at work who got them with his new Quad showed them to me. I might like them. I noticed tonite Whitney has them for $32 while the Dodge Mopar accessories catalog lists them for $57. I am getting a 15% discount on accessories if ordered with the truck so it probably comes close. The Mopar's have a small ram logo on them.

Sounds like you'll get a good 6000 mile break-in. Are these all campgrounds you're going to?
Are you going to test run the camper much before your East Texas trip? I'll be anxious to hear how it does.
  • HookEmHookEm Member Posts: 8
I just signed the papers for my new Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab. I got it at 2% over invoice. Pretty damn good if I can say so myself. I also got a better price for my trade in. It actually does work really well to nego. the trade-in up front. They will go a lot higher that way. I feel I got the best deal possible which is a really good feeling. I used all the info I got from Edmonds.com and it helped a lot. Talk to y'all later.
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Ron, Oh, I had those on my Ford. I liked them.
Yes they are all state parks. I stay at State Parks or Core of Engineers Parks whenever possible. Much nicer, and more privacy.
I don't know if I will make a test run not, this weekend its going to be raining all day Sat and Sun.. I will hook it up though just to see how it sets on the overload springs. Thats my only concern.
Do you have a travel trailer or 5th wheel?
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
Mike, you're as bad as me. Ref: Topic #46 RV Towing-reply #14. I forget what I tell who.
My biggest concern is how level my fifth wheel will be when hitched. I'm probably going to have to flip the camper axles.
Another question: How are you handling the electrical(lights and brakes) plug. On my present truck it's mounted on the inside wall of the bed. I guess that's the typical location. I would like to locate it somewhere else incase I haul some tanbark and accidently hit it with a pitchfork. My '90 has a second plug underneath the front of the bed. What is this used for, a slide in camper perhaps?
Seems if the 98's have this second plug I could run an extention line down to it. What's your thoughts?

What type of hook-ups do you get at your state parks. I haven't camped ouside of Pa. yet. Do you have a slide out on your fifth wheel?
  • buck_bbuck_b Member Posts: 8
Hi guys -- just wondering if anyone had heard anything about any problems with the gas engine trannies or if it was just diesel that was having problems (maybe related to the tendency to tow heavier stuff w/deisel)?

Agree on the smog but I had a girlfriend once who managed to put regular unleaded into her diesel VW and I don't relish the thought of that happening to a beautiful p/up!

    Thanks ... later!
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Ron, Oh,ok, I remember now. Forgive me I just turned 50. I'm having the plug installed in the traditional place. I guess you could put it up higher in the bed somehow. There is lots of room between the bed wall, and the fender. You can also get a metal one. That should be a little safer from the pitchfork. I havn't seen a second one. Where is it located exactly?
The State Parks all have at least Water & Elec, and some have full hookups. Private campgrounds (KOA ect.)that I have stayed at are like parking lots. You just pull into a slot between two other campers. Thats fine when your just spending a night on the road. I like to have some trees, and bushes, and a little lawn space if I'm staying a few days.
I don't have a slide out though, just a strait 26' Terry 25 5H. 1993 model. I've hauled that little critter from coast to coast in the past 5 years. Sure beats staying in a motel. You know what they say.."Home is where you park it."
We even stayed on the strip in Las Vegas. Circus Circus has a campground across the street from the casino, with about 1700 sites with full hookups. It really feels strange to come back from the casinos to your camper.
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
buck_b, I think most of the transmission problems where with the earlier models. But when you have the awesome power of the diesel or the V10, you could cause real strain on a drive train. If you take care of it and don't abuse it I don't think you will have a problem.
How did the the VW run with the gas in it? Your right that would be a nightmare. A $30,000 nightmare.
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
mharde2, the Dodge sales booklet lists the trailer tow group items and one of those items is "- Seven-lead wiring harness with fifth-wheel take-out". So what exactly is a fifth-wheel take-out? Called my dealer again today and he still can't tell me when my truck will be built.
He claims they haven't got ANY 24 valves in yet and don't know what they even look like (other than pictures).
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Ron, Thats a bummer...I feel sorry for you man. That doesn't seem right to me. Maybe you could drive down to the factory and just take one...Very tempting huh?
I would be tempted to go over to the Ford lot and buy a Powerstroke. I've seen them already on the lot. Oh well, maybe if you give up it will come in.
I saw that 5th wheel takeout too, but I haven't been able to find it. I thought that was maybe what you were talking about, that reseptical under the bed. I'll have to look again. going to get it installed in an hour. I guess I'll know then.
    Hang in there guy...
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Ron, Well I just took the trailer for a test tow. I just pulled it 5 miles down the Hwy and back. It did pretty good. I could tell it was back there when I would take off from a dead stop. I guess I didn't think I would. I don't know why I thought that, it weighs 1000 lbs more than the truck.
One thing I don't really like is, third geer is a little low, (very noisy at 65mph,and 2650rpm)and O/D is a little high,(at 65 and 1750rpm.) It seems to like 75mph in O/D, but thats to fast for towing. I think I will try towing in O/D as much as possible, unless it is two hilly. I hope that is not to hard on the transmission. It runs pretty quiet at 60 mpg in third.( thats about 2500 rpm) Thats probably what I should tow at, but I'm used to 65.
The other thing is the overload springs. I think I will take the stops off. With the trailer hooked up they set just about a 1/2 inch from the stops, so every bump makes a banging sound.
Its going to take awhile to acclimate myself to this truck.
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
mharder2, I'm confused about the over load springs. Is that the same thing as the camper special package AHJ option? I read another thread somewhere about thumping sounds when going over medium bumps. Why would you only have 1/2 inch clearance with a light load? Are these springs meant for heavery loading and did I make a mistake by ordering them? You mentioned you might take the stops off. Is that easy to do? Will the whole rear suspension work properly if you do that? Maybe the stops need to be higher for lighter loads.

It sounds like you aren't overly impressed towing the first time out.
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Ron, Don,t pay me any attention. I am really picky about everything. It takes me time to warm up to new things. Also I've always had a Ford truck, and it will take a while to got used to the Dodge.(Also my first diesel)
With the truck empty the overload springs are about 2" from the stops. Untill the load is heavy enough to make the stops contact the springs they don't do anything. They are not adjustable, although you could rig them to make contact all the time by attaching a thicker piece of rubber to the stops or something. The stops are just bolted to the frame, so they will not be hard to remove. I actually got them mostly for the heavy duty sway bar that comes with them.
I hope you get yours soon, so we can compare, and maybe share some ideas.

Any comments on the Isuzu Hombre?
  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Ron, Just got back from a run to Durant Ok. It was 180 mi. round trip at 70mph. Got 21.2 mpg, had a strong head wind on the return trip too. Not bad, I'm hoping for 23 and it looks attainable.
Another bit of good news...to hook up the brake controller all you have to do is plug it in. You will get a plastic bag that contains a wiring harness. You just splice the wires together with your brake control wires and plug it in. (15 min job)
  • 606zp606zp Member Posts: 57
mhard2, That sounds like great milage, even at 70 mph. Do you think it'll get better after it gets broke in some more? Maybe 25!! What was the rpms, I'm assuming you ran in OD. Are you getting use to the noise?

I stopped by the dealership this afternoon and crawled underneath a 2500 to look at the over load springs. If you take the stops off, don't you think the springs may come up though the bed if heavily loaded up. I'm thinking if the stops were lowered 3/4 inch so they rest on the springs when you have the fifth wheel hitched, you would eliminate the bump sound.

Is that what they mean by fifth wheel take off? I'm assuming this plug is underneath the dash board. Neat!

I just picked up my Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 (Driftwood color - silver) from the dealership! Man, I love it! This truck turns some heads, plus it feels really safe since it rides so high off the ground. I think I am really going to enjoy owning this bad boy. I am pretty pumped right now. Talk to y'all later.

  • mharde2mharde2 Member Posts: 278
Well I don't know about 25mpg...I'll settle for 23. The RPM at 70 in O/D is 2000, at 65 its 1750. In 3rd geer at 60 is 2500, and at 65 is 2650. You get your peak horsepower and torque at 2500rpm, so I guess thats your optimum range. The noise level at 70 is not bad, just a low rumble. Now I cant wait to find out what the millage will be towing. I'll have to wait until a week from Friday for that one. I'm hoping for around 14mpg.
I was just thinking about that spring hitting the bottom of the bed also. I'll come up with a solution for that one.
I never did find that 5th wheel take out...Let me know if you find it on yours.

Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I've read the last 30 days of comments in this section and am pleased with the quality of answers given. I'm very much in love w/the Ram Quad and intend to purchase one in the near future. I have a 93 ranger now,( it's been prob free). But the time has come to Step-Up to a FULL size truck. And I want to make sure that I SPEC it correctly inorder to avoid any disappointments later.Any suggestions on gear ratios, this REALLY confuses me.My uses for the truck are: daily commute (36mi round), occassional hauling of lumber/gravel etc, light towing (initally), w/ plans for a camper in the future.I plan to visit a camper dealer to get some idea of "tongue wts.etc." Also it will be 2WD, I just don't think I'd really use 4wd that much to justify the added expense.Sorry for the length, just wanted to provide details for your suggestions. Thanx in advance. :>>
