The Vortec 5.7 has about 250 HP, the older 5.7 has about 200. The Vortec 5.7 makes about 330 lb/ft, I think the older one makes 300 lb/ft.
  • cdeancdean Member Posts: 1,110
the old 350's made 330 ft lb of torque, the Vortec's made 335. torque peak wasn't much different, but the vortec had a much WIDER powerband than the throttle-body engines.

Does anyone know how much horsepower a 1993 GMC V6 4.3L Engine has? Or maybe a web site I could look it up at?

I am looking to buy a 95 GMC 3/4 ton Ext Cab 4x4 with a 6.5 turbo deisel has anyone had problems.

Either the diesel goes and goes and goes OR they have have fuel pump/injecter problems.

Unless you are going to put a million miles on the truck, in a short time, or haul heavy, heavy loads ALL THE TIME a diesel is not economical and they are REALLY exspensive to run. A gas engine is much more economical and will haul a heavy load, also.

Ya ya diesel sounds good and it seems to be the thing to buy now. But no one really talks about how much a diesel costs to run. I work in a dealership trust me they cost.

OH YA, GM is coming out with a new Isuzu diesel in a year or two. Which we hope will be much better. Should be Isuzu is will known and trusted for there diesels.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Agree completely with you on the diesel comments. Most cases, go gas. I have owned two diesels, and Isuzu and a Ford. Accumulated 210,000 combined miles.
Probably won't buy another diesel. Your second paragraph in the above post sums it up very well.

    I'm looking to buy a Chevy S-10 pick-up
or blazer. Can anyone give related
experiences owning one of these vehicles
or info about what to look for when buying
a used one or what troubles I may
encounter when owning one. Any help
    would be appreciated Thanks

Bug guard from G.M. Mr. Goodwrench parts counter. Installs in 15 minutes, includes fasteners that fit in "peg" holes on underside of hood, perfect fit, no sticky tape, no hook-and-loop fasteners, in stock. Costs a little more but worth it! About $60 I think.

Does anyone have any news on the 1000 voucher GM that GM was going to issue in settlement of the class action lawsuit for the older pickups with side mounted gas tanks? There was supposed to be a decision in mid April but I have heard nothing.
    Thanks

Does anyone know of a dealer from Atlanta, Ga. South willing to sell around factory invoice?
    I've talked with these folks

Ande Chevrolet Oldsmobile, located 25 minutes from
downtown Cincinnati, is committed to offering the
Cncinnati consumer the best price on any new Chevrolet or Oldsmobile automobile, truck, van or sports utility vehicle. If you don't live within driving distance of Cincinnati, we can make arrangements to ship you the automobile or truck
of your choice if you find the Chevrolet or of
your desires on our detailed New Vehicle pages. Please feel free to E-mail us for a
"$49 over invoice" quotation or call us
on our 800 number. If you live in the Cincinnati area, feel free to visit our showroom 1 block off the Route 50 exit on I-275 in Indiana.

I would like to find someone closer to home, Tallahassee, Fla. However I'll consider walking to Cincinnati rather than give my local dealer 1k over invoice +.

Anyone had experience towing with either the 5.3L or 6.0L Chevy/GMC?
  • jlee1jlee1 Member Posts: 4
I ordered a '99 Silverado on 3/18/99. Have just this week been informed Chevy isn't accepting any
more orders for '99s. (And my order didn't make it
in time). Anyone have any info about this? May
seems kind of early to close the model year books.
Things must be either real good or real bad at
    chevy...

Yes, I have too have gone to several dealers trying to find a Silverdo only to be told that the one I want is not available and orders are no longer being taken for Chevy trucks. Consequently I have opted to purchase a GMC Sierra 1500, Ext Cab w/2WD. This particular truck has the SLE package with the 1SC upgrade - total cost is $22,951 excluding tax and tags. This is a better deal then I could have gotten with the Silverado!!!

Does anyone know of any websites that tell about changes on the 2000 Chev/GMC pickups?
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
check there home page. it gives info on the trucks or pick up a info packet from local dealer. You could compare the two.
  • evergreenevergreen Member Posts: 213
andrew...I guess I live too far from Detroit. The dealers here in Oregon don't have any information on the year 2000 pickups. I haven't found anything at their websites, either. Probably just a little too early for them to be talking about the changes on their new pickups.
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93

ooops i misunderstood. I to live in Oregon, I don't know of any real changes except the C/K trucks are being fased(sp) out. The silverado is what you will be getting from now on. Also the tahoe, Sub, etc.. will start to have that same look, as well with some more changes inside.

I belive the new crew cab trucks won't be around until late 2000. If even that soon. There is also a new diesel (Isuzu) to come out in 2000 sometime. From what I hear at the training center it should be a good motor. Based on a motor Isuzu currently runs. I do know Isuzu is very well respected among the diesel community. They are quieter an very dependable. All I really know.

    BIG BLOCKS:

As many have heard the feds are going to crack down on SUV's and trucks emissions. I do not know the exact date but it is soon. My GUESS is GM did not do a big block because it will not pass the new laws. I have HEARD that the dodge v-10 will not be able to pass either. The ford v-10 I don't know if you look at the size it is not that big just alot of little squirrels. food for thought

Fender Flares are a option on the 2000 1500s
  • rlizardrlizard Member Posts: 1
I also made a request for a 99 silverado to be ordered about two weeks ago. The dealership was going to order it as soon as they were allocated one. The cut off date came before that happened.
I'm glad because the 4th door is an option for
the 2000 model. I'm told orders and pricing
info should be available 1st week in June.

I am looking at a new 1999 GMC SLE1500 Extended cab Truck and the sticker lists an option identified as Marketing Package for MSRP of 565.00
I haven't seen an such option listed on Edmunds list of available option for that truck. The dealer has been real forth coming about what it is. I trying to figure out dealer cost but can't come up with this one. Anyone have a suggestion?
  • mrs0020mrs0020 Member Posts: 1
mriggs - one of the best websites I have found for determining dealer cost is www.carprices.com. Edmunds does a great job of giving you retail and dealer, but carprices shows you the "hidden" items.

I'm thinking of trading my 1990 1500 in for one
of the new 2500s in 4wd with the 6.0 L. There are too many options to easily sort out.

Any experience/suggestions for the 5 speed vs.
the new auto? Is the locking differential
    worth the extra $245/$285?

I pull a horse trailer and do some off-road driving while hunting here in Montana.

    Thanks for any advice!

I just purchased an 96 Silverado Z71 with the 5.0L vortex engine. Does anyone know what the recommended MPG is? I was told it ranged from 17 to 20 mpg. Is this true?

If you compare the two axles side by side you will see that the 3/4 ton is a much larger axle.I wanted it for the towing. As for options if you get the LT chevy or SLT GMC you get most of them in the package.Just pick the axle ratio you want.I love this truck! Luckly I have not had any problems and the leather buckets are great.Alot of people say "leather in a truck?" but it sure helps keep dust down and kids spills don't hurt it.Good luck on you order.

Let me add because of the cheapness of the FAX I intend to copy one message and send it to every dealer I can locate in phone book up here in the north central states.

I think I am going to enjoy this function., Went to a couple dealers and have no problem talking to them or confronting them.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
You'll wait forever to get heated mirrors and a bench seat and engine block heater together in a GM. I think when you are ready, you should buy off the lot.

    99 Silverado, LS 1500, 4x4, Reg Cab, Long-box, 5.3L, Pewter.
  • ladyblueladyblue Member Posts: 326
... in a Dodge Ram 1500. Except for the bench seat - it's actually a 40/20/40 that acts just like a bench. And the guy you are referring to may be Dmat. He's a Dodge salesman who frequents the Town Hall and has a web site for ordering trucks at $99 over invoice. He hangs out in the Smart Shopper conference and in Pickups.

Does anyone have any idea when the specs and prices are coming out on the 2000 Sierra? I had a dealer order one for me, and they told me it would be somewhere around 3% over the '99 prices.
I'm just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me?
  • larryg2larryg2 Member Posts: 1
Can anyone tell me what gas mileage to expect from a 2500 extended cab 4X4 with a 5.9 motor? I'm toying with this combination or a Ford diesel. From the previous comments, I'm now less inclined to go with the diesel. Also any comments on the reliability of the motor.

Silverado/Sierra Owners - I live in snow country and want to get a truck that will get through foot+/- deep snow and packed ice on steep hills. Which would be better, Insta Track or Auto Trac? Also, can someone explain the Locking Rear Differtial option?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
Locking rear axle is just another name for a limited slip differential. Tiny clutches inside the differential carrier help to transfer torque to the other side when one drive wheel slips. The effectiveness is limited, no big deal. Helps a bit where traction is even, but poor, like a slippery boat ramp. Helps you to accelerate in a straight line on roads that are coated with snow or ice. But useless in un-even off-road terrain.

I bought my 99 sierra about a month ago and it has been in the shop three times and is fixing to go back. It seems to have a vibration in it at about 60 on. The first time they balanced the tires and said it was fixed, the second time they put a new tire on and said one was out of round and said it was fixed. The third time they put a new set of Michilens on it and said it was fixed but when I drove it home it was worse than day one. Am I the only one having this problem? If anyone else is e-mail me at jkade@hotmail.com, I do love my new truck though but I am fixing to use the lemon law.
  • knobbyknobby Member Posts: 60
    Kade et al;

You, I and many others must be in the same boat. I have taken my 99 Sierra SLE 2wd long bed to the dealer three times now for the same thing. They have replaced the drive shaft, shimmed the rear of the transmission to correct the pinion angle and rebalanced the tires. They also told me that the rims run true and are not bent. Everything under 60 is fine, and everything over 70 is fine. Just don't cruise either side of 65 MPH (62 to 68 in my case). I get a serious shimmy like a bent rim or a seriously out of round or heavy spotted tire. I have taken the truck to other tire dealers in the area and they haven't done any better. All four of the Generals balanced out under 1 1/2 ounces and ran true with no apparent lateral or radial runout. I even changed the tires over to Michlin LTX M/S and they have done the same thing also (even though they did make an improvement in the front, however, it still shakes and vibrates in the rear). If ANYONE has an answer on how to correct this PLEASE post it to let us know how it was corrected so that we/I can print it out and show it to the dealer to see if they can do something about it. I really enjoy the truck otherwise and I would hate to give it up over this.

Am I the only person with brakes fading out completely on a 1997 Z-71.If you had this problem
    how was it remedied.
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
depends on how many miles. Brakes on the z-71 last anywhere between 15k-25k depending on driving habit. Also if you haul or tow do a brake flush often.
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
with 44K my 97 z71 brakes are still going strong. I also tow a 5th wheel occationally. But I am easy on brakes, I don't brake hard in normal driving. Rich

I'm looking for help getting a few extra HP and better mileage from my '95 Yukon with the 5.7 liter throttle body. All help is appreciated.
  • stevekstevek Member Posts: 362
Yes the breakes could be better, some front pads work better than others. I had another problem with mine: the rear axle seals were leaking oil onto the rear break shoes, therefore the rear brakes were not working at all.

Did the Chevy k2500 ext cab in the Silverado LS have a change in body style during the 99 model year. I have a dealer that said the early 99's did not have a third door. Is this correct?
  • billengineerbillengineer Member Posts: 2
I am looking for a 1/2 ton, 4.8/5.3 v-8, 4 WD Auto, 4 speed automatic, 3 door, SB. However, from reading the postings I am having second thoughts. Is the drive line vibrations limited to two wheel drives? Is the engine pinging taken care of by the software updates? Is there problems with the 4 WD Auto? I see that are two TSB's for dash rattles. Does this take care of the dash rattles? Is there a problem with sqawking, squeaking 3rd door? I want a tight truck. The new truck choice is between the new technology Chev/GMC or the older technology Ram. I would appreciate your thoughts, $30,000 is lot of money in my book and I do not want to be stuck with a truck.
  • jimcarrjimcarr Member Posts: 37
    (billengineer)

I have a 3 week old 5.3, 3 door that fills the description of your intended purchase with the exception of the Autotrack which I opted out of as I seldom use 4wd.

The truck was manufactured in Canada, the second one that I have purchased from this source and was made in May.

No squeaks, no rattles, no pinging, not anything to complain about. Averaging 18mpg for the first 600 miles. I live in rural Nebraska and have done little stop and start driving with this truck.

    Hope this addresses your questions.
