Deltoid1, It isn't as bad as it sounds, and probably worth a try. I've done a couple of oil changes without any problems so far. I've obtained fasteners for other purposes in the past from Nissan. They are overpriced, but you really don't need many even if the few you are dealing with do wear out over time.
I guess I'm guess I'm a little gun shy.I just bought a '99 626 in Feb. for my wife that is a real pain to get to.You can't even see the filter from top or bottom. You go from the bottom by feel.
I was also wondering about the Tacoma's (4-cyl) filter and whether the Toyota had a timing belt or chain, but I haven't got a response on the Tacoma page yet.
I think both the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Frontier Crew cab are typical first year models for the U.S. There are some options the manufactures seem to be holding out on. The Four Wheel drive options are limited. No locking diff, limited slip only comes on a 4WD. Rear seat on Nissan does not fold down. Miscellaneous complaints about the front seats on the Toy. Complaints about the lack of comfort in the toy rear seats. Complaints about the tiny Nissan bed, Toy bed is shallow. Some quality problems on the Nissan, some vibration problems on the toy.
vince8, it is apparent you have a problem, you certainly have the right to like any vehicle you choose, but it looks like you purchased a ranger and have a serious case of buyers remorse as evidenced by your efforts to convince everyone who will listen that the ranger is a superior truck. i ask 1 question when was the last time you heard of anyone with a ranger with more than 90000 miles? i rest my case
Bobby, The solution is don't buy any vehicle the first year out of the gate. Teething problems with the machine, manufacturers and dealers learning how to work on them, etc. Be patient and you'll get a better machine equipped as you want it at a better price. Believe me, I speak from experience.
The only neg about the CrewCab is the price. The dealer will not budge on the MSRP. Even if you throw cash in their faces.(dumb)Down here in Houston Texas, you need a truck, but why need a big truck only to go back and forth from work and hauling stuff from Home Depot. Then try srunching the family in an extentedcab! That is why you need the CrewCab. It doesn't gulp down gas (16-19 mpg), extra space for kids and mother-in-law (or in the truck bed, pending how much you love your M-I-L), hauling Home Depot stuff, enough clearance for those flash floods and Honda Civic's. The truck is a great truck. It's made to be used, not like the SUV's that never get put to the test and are over rated. The CC is made for a guy in mind. If you are ready to buy a CC, you will pay full price. Wait for other CrewCab models, see if the price goes down. Good Luck.
Coffey; what quality problems are you talking about on the Nissan CC? I haven't heard of any.
I know folks don't like to pay MSRP for anything, but the crew cab really isn't that expensive when you compare it to other trucks, you can get a V6 crewcab with some nice equipment for less than a 4 cylinder 4x4 toyota tacoma!
I cruise several boards and topics at the Edmunds board so I don't remember exactly where I read everything. I remember reading about some problem with the interior, I think it was related to the front seats, something was missing. I have also read of a loose rear wheel with one new owner. This makes me wounder what else they might of missed. I have also noticed on the Nissan board "SAY IT" the web page is buggy, and nobody seems to be minding the store. While I know there are people out there who swear by there frontiers and other Nissan trucks, I have seen a few flashing warning lights so far. I am currently thinking I am also going to wait it out for a year or two. While I would like to upgrade, I can't say I have an immediate need to.
For those that choose to wait a year or two before purchasing the Frontier (especially the Crew Cab), I say WHY? The Frontier has been on the market for several years now. The V6 motor has been in the Pathfinder for even longer. The Crew Cab is a Frontier with extra room....hello...am I missing something here?? In addition, the example of a loose wheel is a lame excuse not to buy a vehicle since this can easily be attributed to a lack of dealer inspection and/or customer test drive of said vehicle before signing any legal document. A loose wheel has happened to me after getting new rims/tires. I certainly didn't use this as a litmus test as to whether or not the vehicle was a wise purchase! I'm with cncman on this one....what quality problems?
I agree with the statement about the Nissan Web site being buggy, but there is no way you can compare the quality of a vehicle with the quality of a WEB SITE! That would be saying that this apple doesn't taste good so I won't even try the orange. Phew! I feel better now!
I was the one talking about my loose wheel after 30 minutes of driving. After my purchase, it was raining in Houston on Saturday. It took another a hour after I heard a wierd clicking noise before my girlfriend told me my rear wheel was loose.(She was following me home from the dealership). I pulled over and tightened the lugs and have had no problems with my cc since. I absolutly love this truck, and you can buy it below MSRP at David McDavid Nissan in Houston (I-45 south). Talk to Sam. I was very upfrount, and told them I knew what the invoice price on my CC was and I was going to pay $300 over invoice. They showed me an invoice. I took off advertising, floor mats, and bedliner. I said I wouldn't pay for that stuff. They didn't take my offer of $21,300 drive out. The next morning, I gave in and paid for the extra $400. I got My se 2wd cc w/ power package, floormats, and bedliner for $21,700. That was $300 over invoice(thiers) and 1500 TTL. I drove out just $70 over what they had on the sticker. This truck is great and I would recommend it to anyone.
Thanks for sharing your experience thus far with you new Crew Cab. I'm looking forward to test driving one and possibly purchasing towards the end of Oct 99. BTW, my first new vehicle was a 87'Nissan Hardbody w/v6. It was a great truck. I didn't treat it very well, but it never let me down. No qualms about Nissan quality here either.
I saw a dark green and also a solar yellow crew cab and they looked real nice, but I was wondering what the purpose of the short bed is for it doesn't look like you could work out of them.Is it more of a family oriented truck.
I checked about a year ago on 98 Nissian Frontier Truck...Rechecking...I have an intermittant noise generally over 60+. Sounds like a wind shear noise from underneath on driver's side..Anyone else experience this sound? If so, contact me at bob0308@aol.com I would appreciate any assistance, since the noise is, well a noise. Thanks
I am interested in the actual mileage anyone is getting with the CC V6 Auto & Standard transmissions. I was wondering if the EPA estimates are in the ballpark.
I'm getting ready to purchase the Frontier 4wd cc soon. I live on a small ranch so I need a truck and I'm a Realtor so I need a passenger car, and to top it off my garage is to small for a dodge ram 1500. The Frontier bed is big enough to carry a weeks worth of horse manure. What more could I ask for!
Its probably not a good time to buy. Their is no competition. The dealers won't deal because they have more demand than they need. Dodge is coming out with the Dakota Quad Cab. This will cause them to deal a little more. I would wait if you can.
Hi Seems like alot of people are "shopping" Frontier but not buying based on the comments in the topics listing, I guess I'm one too. My 2 cents is some research I've done on my pet peeve with Frontier 4X4( by the way I have 173 thousand miles on my Nissan PU and never been in the shop I do brakes, belts and bulbs myself)is the rear end gearing. here is my summary of RR ratios of other makes: Based on carpoint and excite\auto data bases B4000/Ranger 4.0(V6):=3.73:1:: Tacoma 4X4 (4cylinder)=3.42:1::Dakota(V6)=3.55:1. Frontier (V6)=4.63:1. My conclusion is Frontier design philosophy favors off road over hiway use. I drove B4000,Ranger 4.0,DakotaV6,and frontier the first 3 will cruise at 60mph turning about 2000 rpm the Frontier is better than last year but still requires 2500 for 60mph this is a MINOR gripe but I'd like to see a 3.70 rear end in em instead of 4.63. I'm 90% freeway 10% off road-most folks who can afford a new vehicle today aren't kids tooling around the mountains we go to work.
Whoa! I was blindsided!, Tech? where did this come from? Noway am I regreting my second Ranger. My first did go to 94K with only general maintainance, and ran fine at trade in. Now I know I am in a Nissan room. I will make a room for a Frontier vs Ranger if you would like and we can take it there. I'm well ready for a debate. Just got done with the Tacoma room and have tons more ammo against the truely inferior Nissan Frontier. etag, the Ranger is available with a 4:11. And is everybit offroad agressive, if not more than the Nissan!. What about the 225ft/lbs vs the 200ft/lbs of torque difference?? What about the limited slip? skidplates, plates that guard the fueltank??? 5spd automatic??? Please research more and visit the Ranger room.
I'm not much for debate and DO like the Ranger 4.0/Mazda B4000!!-BUT have read about the piston slap occuring in Triton V8 and some 3.0s and 4.0s after 1k to 15k miles... They say it sounds like a bad main on cold start up. Ford admits a prob and says a fix is coming in Sept?? WOuld you get one of those engines??
I have a weekness, I love cars! I spend way too much time looking at specs etc.. Don't get me wrong when I say this and I am by no means trying to snowball you but Ford Rangers, Chevys, Dodges, and Toyotas are a DIME a DOZEN. I had a CC on order until I recently changed my order to an Xterra.. but both vehicles are definately unique.. maybe not the fastest, most powerfull or the most worthy off road but definately the best blend of all the above and damn attractive too! I will sleep better at night knowing that they will only produce 25-35 thousand CCs a year and 70 thousand or so Xterra's and that I won't have to worry about my entire neighborhood owning one. Like I said, don't get me wrong because I love Rangers, Dakotas, Tacomas, and S-10s but I just have to exercise a little uniqueness. Oh and almost forgot, I actually got a good deal on the Xterra..
Hey, what made you change your mind? I'm curious because I like both vehicles. In fact, I got the full brochure and Xterra hat sent to me about a month ago. Last weekend I had the chance to look at both down in Olympia, WA. Impressive. Anyhow, just curious.
I bought a Crew Cab 4x4 2 weeks ago. SE auto. 18 mpg in the city on the first tank full. Not bad for a new engine.
Dependability - don't know. Handles great. Tires are poor for off road - they're "all season" P rated, not even "all terrain". Spring over axle in the back - Xterra is spring under axle which means CC has better clearance in the back. No skidplate for tranny, transfer case or engine - makes me wonder what the "Off-road" sticker refers to.
Well, the model and color that I wanted/ordered still has not come in and was told that it wouldn't be until November. I almost compromised with a slightly different color until my wife said "what about the Xterra?". I was a little baffled because I thought she wanted the truck for home improvement purposes.. anyhooo, I talked to the fleet guy that I was working with and asked if he would give me the same deal on the X as the CC (1K over invoice) and he said yes so I said changed it to the X!! It just seems like it has more usable space for everyday stuff. The price works out to be the same because I was planning on spending a thousand $$$ for the topper/shell. And if we need to haul anything big, I can hook up my dad's trailer and away we go.. I have a deposit down on a silver Xterra SE AT 4x4 that is due to arrive in late August - early September. If you havn't driven one, I highly recommend it as it will put a smile on your face.. not to mention all of the stares you will get!
Now, now Vince, you don't want to get this started again do you? The 4 cylinder gives the ranger a pants down spankin' and the V6 4x4's I thought we agreed were comparable, I don't see how you get truly inferior.
Well, the Ranger offers 3 engines to choose from, Nissan 2. The 3.0 can be had for about $500 more. Granted the 2.4 has more HP, but how much more torque? 8 ft/lbs was it? Now the 3.0 has 152HP and I won't talk torque. The v6's are not comparable. You may say the Nissan V6 is more "refined" because of its "technology" but, the 4.0 pushrod still out torques it by 25ft/lbs. And how can this new V6 be "proven"? Also, what is Nissan going to do when the 200HP 245ft/lbs of torque 4.0 comes into play?? I just don't like it when people don't know the facts about the Ranger and call them all junk or unable to work as a truck. Or can't offroad like the Frontier. You know my history. I use my Ranger as an outdoors vehicle. I have only seen older Nissans while in the outdoors, and not very many of them at that. The only Frontier I have seen was during that last little private shootout between the Ranger/Tacoma/Frontier. I just don't see very many of them around. Even the Tacoma owners agreed, they don't see very many Frontiers on the road? Why?? Well, maybe it is time to start a Frontier Vs Ranger room and let the stats fly? I have learned alot more about my Rangers mechanicals and abilities.
RE: "what is Nissan going todo when the 200HP 245ft/lbs of torque 4.0 comes into play??"
here is your answer>>> taken from a report
Frontier: In 2001, a new front grille treatment will have the compact pickup and Crew Cab looking more like the Xterra than a low-budget import. Nissan wants to take the commercial vehicle feel out of the truck, especially with the school bus-like, five-speed shifter. A supercharger will come with the V-6, giving the Frontier a frisky 210 hp.
also another snipit>>>
Pathfinder: The sport utility already has been given a new front and rear fascia for mid-1999. It will get a 240-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the Maxima family early next year.
I still think the Ford engines will out torque the Nissan engines. I will just buy whichever one is cheaper. I think the supercharged engine will cost too much. I also think that Ford might buy Nissan out in a few years.
Vince, looks like you need to start up the topic, so folks can get the facts. I understand how off roading is very important to you, but this is a seperate debate, since most folks buy the 4 cylinder 4x2 in the frontiers and rangers, so I suggest we concentrate on one topic at a time. I guess we need to look at why someone usually buys a truck, it seems to me that they need something that doesn't cost alot up front, or to own, that is tough dependable and can carry alot of stuff and is a comfortable commuter. In all of these categories, the frontier wins, lower operating costs, lower purchase price, bigger bed, longer warranty, more HP and torque, more towing capacity and a better ride. In my neck of the woods I see about as many frontiers as I do rangers, the V6 has been used in the pathfinder since 96 and is derived from the quest/ pathfinder 3.0l V6 that has been around for years, so yes it is proven. Now I may not have a whole lot of time to be in this debate, I have been really busy selling frontiers!
The one difference that I noticed in driving the 2 is that the X is a little less stable in the twisties simply for the fact that it has a shorter wheelbase and is a little taller.. If you plan on doing much offroading, the X would be better. I'm not sure if you have been following the magazine articles on it or not but they have been putting it in direct competition with the Jeep Cherokee Sport and have been favoring the X in most catagories. Of course the Jeep will win in departure and approach angles but the X is not too far behind. It's been a while since I've posted but here goes:
I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier King Cab with a leaking rear (sliding) window. Do any of you who actually own a Frontier have a problem with water dripping into the vehicle from the top seal?
Also, I have noticed a strong mildew smell emanating from the the doors when I roll the windows down. I know this sounds mundane but it is aggravating none the less. I have tried Lysol and I have looked for water leaks in the door with no luck. It seems to me that it may actually be the felt-like material on the door that makes contact with the window. Suggestions?
curt; try febreeze for the smell, and it sounds like you need a new seal on the window, the dealer should replace it for you if you are not over 36,000 miles. I have seen this once before, but it was because someone had tried to break in through the sliding window and messed up the seal.
I am at just under 12,500 miles on the truck. I have an appointment on Thursday to get the leak taken care of. By the way, the truck has been a real gem otherwise.
can anyone tell me what the yellowish waxy residue is coming out from (drain holes I guess)from the bottom of my tailgate and how to eliminate this? I have a 00 nissan frontier crew cab. Also is 13.5mpg normal for this truck with 750 miles? Thanks Cliff
cct5378-- I have the 2000 Desert runner SE V6, have 150 miles on it, I'm getting 22.5 city miles. Of course it is only 2-wheel drive, but maybe it will help some.
am close to buying Frontier se 4X4-only if dealer fixes a problem on the truck. I suspect the dealer has installed wheels and tires from Pathfinders with front end vibration problems on the trucks. the tires were Dunlops and larger than the stock tires on one truck. One tire rubbed the mud flap on left turns. The trucks(2) seemed to have front end vibration at 60+. I think I'm going to call the local nissan rep. I also spotted the remains of a piece of weight tape on a wheel indicating it required a fairly large weight. anybody know how to contact the nissan local rep in Minnesota?
Does anyone know if there is a $1000.00 dealer incentive on the Frontiers Crew cab? I have been to several web sites where they say there is but is not consistent everywhere.
There is no rebate on crew cabs because Nissan is selling them as fast as they can make them. The plant in Smyrna, TN is on overtime just trying to keep up with demand for the CC and Xterra. As for contacting the Nissan rep, I'd call Nissan Motor Corporation in Smyrna (separate from the mfg facility) and complain to them.
cct5378, The residue is rustproofing. It coats the inside of the sheetmetal and is supposed to stay sticky. I had the doorpanels off recently to replace the speakers and saw alot of it. Its nice to know its there.
