thanks for the info. on the filter.Sounds like a pain to me.I also wonder about having to replace worn-out fasteners.
http://home.earthlink.net/~mcervantes
It isn't as bad as it sounds, and probably worth a try. I've done a couple of oil changes without any problems so far. I've obtained fasteners for other purposes in the past from Nissan. They are overpriced, but you really don't need many even if the few you are dealing with do wear out over time.
I guess I'm guess I'm a little gun shy.I just bought a '99 626 in Feb. for my wife that is a real pain to get to.You can't even see the filter from top or bottom. You go from the bottom by feel.
I was also wondering about the Tacoma's (4-cyl) filter and whether the Toyota had a timing belt or chain, but I haven't got a response on the Tacoma page yet.
thanks
it is apparent you have a problem, you certainly
have the right to like any vehicle you choose, but it looks like you purchased a ranger and have a serious case of buyers remorse as evidenced by your efforts to convince everyone who will listen that the ranger is a superior truck. i ask 1 question when was the last time you heard of anyone with a ranger with more than 90000 miles?
i rest my case
The solution is don't buy any vehicle the first year out of the gate. Teething problems with the machine, manufacturers and dealers learning how to work on them, etc. Be patient and you'll get a better machine equipped as you want it at a better price. Believe me, I speak from experience.
what quality problems are you talking about on the Nissan CC? I haven't heard of any.
I know folks don't like to pay MSRP for anything,
but the crew cab really isn't that expensive when you compare it to other trucks, you can get a V6
crewcab with some nice equipment for less than a 4 cylinder 4x4 toyota tacoma!
soon. I live on a small ranch so I need a truck
and I'm a Realtor so I need a passenger car, and to top it off my garage is to small for a dodge ram 1500. The Frontier bed is big enough to carry a weeks worth of horse manure. What more could I ask for!
Seems like alot of people are "shopping" Frontier but not buying based on the comments in the topics
listing,
I guess I'm one too. My 2 cents is some research
I've done on my pet peeve with Frontier 4X4( by the way I have 173 thousand miles on my Nissan PU
and never been in the shop I do brakes, belts and bulbs myself)is the rear end gearing.
here is my summary of RR ratios of other makes:
Based on carpoint and excite\auto data bases
B4000/Ranger 4.0(V6):=3.73:1:: Tacoma 4X4 (4cylinder)=3.42:1::Dakota(V6)=3.55:1.
Frontier (V6)=4.63:1.
My conclusion is Frontier design philosophy favors
off road over hiway use.
I drove B4000,Ranger 4.0,DakotaV6,and frontier
the first 3 will cruise at 60mph turning about
2000 rpm the Frontier is better than last year
but still requires 2500 for 60mph
this is a MINOR gripe but I'd like to see a 3.70
rear end in em instead of 4.63.
I'm 90% freeway 10% off road-most folks who can afford a new vehicle today aren't kids tooling
around the mountains we go to work.

Tech? where did this come from? Noway am I regreting my second Ranger. My first did go to 94K with only general maintainance, and ran fine at trade in. Now I know I am in a Nissan room. I will make a room for a Frontier vs Ranger if you would like and we can take it there. I'm well ready for a debate. Just got done with the Tacoma room and have tons more ammo against the truely inferior Nissan Frontier.
etag, the Ranger is available with a 4:11. And is everybit offroad agressive, if not more than the Nissan!. What about the 225ft/lbs vs the 200ft/lbs of torque difference?? What about the limited slip? skidplates, plates that guard the fueltank??? 5spd automatic??? Please research more and visit the Ranger room.
I'm not much for debate and DO like the
Ranger 4.0/Mazda B4000!!-BUT have read about
the piston slap occuring in Triton V8 and some
3.0s and 4.0s after 1k to 15k miles...
They say it sounds like a bad main on cold start up.
Ford admits a prob and says a fix is coming in Sept?? WOuld you get one of those engines??
Oh and almost forgot, I actually got a good deal on the Xterra..
ciao
Dependability - don't know. Handles great. Tires are poor for off road - they're "all season" P rated, not even "all terrain". Spring over axle in the back - Xterra is spring under axle which means CC has better clearance in the back. No skidplate for tranny, transfer case or engine - makes me wonder what the "Off-road" sticker refers to.
happy hunting
Granted the 2.4 has more HP, but how much more torque? 8 ft/lbs was it? Now the 3.0 has 152HP and I won't talk torque. The v6's are not comparable. You may say the Nissan V6 is more "refined" because of its "technology" but, the 4.0 pushrod still out torques it by 25ft/lbs. And how can this new V6 be "proven"? Also, what is Nissan going to do when the 200HP 245ft/lbs of torque 4.0 comes into play??
I just don't like it when people don't know the facts about the Ranger and call them all junk or unable to work as a truck. Or can't offroad like the Frontier.
You know my history. I use my Ranger as an outdoors vehicle. I have only seen older Nissans while in the outdoors, and not very many of them at that. The only Frontier I have seen was during that last little private shootout between the Ranger/Tacoma/Frontier. I just don't see very many of them around. Even the Tacoma owners agreed, they don't see very many Frontiers on the road? Why??
Well, maybe it is time to start a Frontier Vs Ranger room and let the stats fly? I have learned alot more about my Rangers mechanicals and abilities.
into play??"
here is your answer>>> taken from a report
Frontier: In 2001, a new front grille treatment will have the compact pickup and Crew Cab looking more like the Xterra than a low-budget import. Nissan wants to take the commercial vehicle feel out of the truck, especially with the school bus-like, five-speed shifter. A supercharger will come with the V-6, giving the Frontier a frisky 210 hp.
also another snipit>>>
Pathfinder: The sport utility already has been given a new front and rear fascia for mid-1999. It will get a 240-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine from the Maxima family early next year.
so folks can get the facts. I understand how off roading is very important to you, but this is a seperate debate, since most folks buy the 4 cylinder 4x2 in the frontiers and rangers, so I suggest we concentrate on one topic at a time.
I guess we need to look at why someone usually buys a truck, it seems to me that they need something that doesn't cost alot up front, or to own, that is tough dependable and can carry alot of stuff and is a comfortable commuter. In all of these categories, the frontier wins, lower operating costs, lower purchase price, bigger bed,
longer warranty, more HP and torque, more towing capacity and a better ride. In my neck of the woods I see about as many frontiers as I do rangers, the V6 has been used in the pathfinder since 96 and is derived from the quest/ pathfinder
3.0l V6 that has been around for years, so yes it is proven. Now I may not have a whole lot of time
to be in this debate, I have been really busy selling frontiers!
later!
I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier King Cab with a leaking rear (sliding) window. Do any of you who actually own a Frontier have a problem with water dripping into the vehicle from the top seal?
Also, I have noticed a strong mildew smell emanating from the the doors when I roll the windows down. I know this sounds mundane but it is aggravating none the less. I have tried Lysol and I have looked for water leaks in the door with no luck. It seems to me that it may actually be the felt-like material on the door that makes contact with the window. Suggestions?
try febreeze for the smell, and it sounds like you need a new seal on the window, the dealer should replace it for you if you are not over 36,000 miles. I have seen this once before, but it was because someone had tried to break in through the
sliding window and messed up the seal.
By the way, the truck has been a real gem otherwise.
I have the 2000 Desert runner SE V6, have 150 miles on it, I'm getting 22.5 city miles. Of course it is only 2-wheel drive, but maybe it will help some.
am close to buying Frontier se 4X4-only if dealer
fixes a problem on the truck. I suspect the dealer has installed wheels and tires from Pathfinders
with front end vibration problems on the trucks.
the tires were Dunlops and larger than the stock
tires on one truck. One tire rubbed the mud flap
on left turns. The trucks(2) seemed to have
front end vibration at 60+. I think I'm going
to call the local nissan rep.
I also spotted the remains of a piece of weight
tape on a wheel indicating it required a fairly
large weight.
anybody know how to contact the nissan local
rep in Minnesota?

I have been to several web sites where they say there is but is not consistent everywhere.
500 miles on the engine. 18 to 21 mpg on the last 3 fill ups. Hopefully it'll improve a bit.

The residue is rustproofing. It coats the inside of the sheetmetal and is supposed to stay sticky. I had the doorpanels off recently to replace the speakers and saw alot of it. Its nice to know its there.
