A week or so ago I posted a problem developing with my Pilot. It happened when the Torque Converter was trying to lock up at about 50 MPH.
It got much worse. Once the TC locked the chattering and bucking would be almost constant. So it is a good solid failure.
I made an appointment with my Honda dealer and delivered the car to them at 8AM Monday 08/21. The service writer (Steve) that I was suppose to see was coming in late, so another one helped me. The tech I was supposed to see was not there either, but another one got right on the problem. After driving the car he agreed the failure was solid and repeatable but he had NO IDEA as to what it was.
The Computer showed no "hits" of any kind and transmission fluid was the right color and had no metal particles. This indicated that nothing was coming apart and nothing was slipping in the tranny.
He spent about 4 hr looking but had to stop. They were short handed on techs and customers were stacking up. The dealership gave me a 24 hr "Courtesy" Rental from Enterprise Leasing. I left there about noon.
Note: I think the tech was totally lost on this one and they wanted another one to take over.
I called the dealership about 5pm and ended up talking to Steve. This is the one that I was supposed to see in the 1st place. He said the tech had not found the problem but someone would get on it the 1st thing Tuesday AM.
He was not really aware if what had been going on, so I filled him in.
He instantly said, "That sounds like a classic case of EGR Valve failure to me. We had a rash of those a while back. Honda has even issued an extended warranty on them. They stick open or closed, or are sluggish in operation. It is more noticeable when TC is locked and there is a more solid hook up of the drive line."
I called again at 10am Tuesday. Steve said the a tech had tested the EGR Valve and it failed. He was installing a new one. I got there at Noon and the car was ready to go and FIXED!

...I am very frustrated with the Pilot's ability to stay put on the hill (exit from the parking garage) when I take my foot off the brake (in Drive position). The car basically rolles back freely....
My 03 Pilot holds just fine on most all hills involving streets. However, coming out of some parking lots with their steep accent will get the same result you are describing.
Your friends cars may not hold on your problem hill either. TEST EM Yourself!
Congratulation on your new Pilot.

I had it in for servicing last week and bitched about - said they were going to get back to me.
Have you heard from others?

Thankfully, HONDA no longer (as of 2006 model) uses steel wheels for their PILOTs. Even the LX now has alloys.

earlier post;
Have about 2000 miles on 4 week old Pilot EXL 4WD and also get the single loud knock when started in the morning. Does not make the noise again until at night after work when the engine is started again. If you shut the engine off after starting and restart it, the noise does not happen again until the next morning or evening. Have not tested to see how many hours or minutes the engine needs to be shut off for the noise to reappear.
Again, thanks Kip for your reply
thanks,

The upper inner light is the directional signal.
Good luck getting it fixed. It is probably a minor thing anyway, maybe a bad gasket or something.
(say in the 2007). By the way where is the Navi box and is the knob on the roof connected to it?
It can't hurt to call a Lexus service dept, as anyone who's been there long enough should remember the problem.
We just have one problem. The drivers side seat has come unstitched twice now. The dealership has replaced the entire leather and it held for about 3 weeks, then the back piece came loose. So they once again put on new leather and then replaced the back hard piece also. Yesterday, I drove it back in and showed them, yet again, the stitching is coming loose and the hard piece on the back is gapping. The tech guy looking at it, said he has seen several Pilots with this SAME problem and Honda refuses to send new seats. They can only fix it with new leather and replace the hard backs. So now they are ording in the new pieces to redo my seat again. I am NOT a happy person about it.
Anyone else experience this with their leather seats?

About a week later I got a notice in the mail from Honda regarding that very problem.
I don't know if maybe Honda doesn't want the dealers to know in advance in case Honda decides to not do the recall, or if the dealers are told to play dumb until the customers have gotten the notices.

I'm thinking of buying Goodyear Fortera triple treds which rate as the number one tire in the truck category in the same survey. The $800 cost, which includes mounting, balance, tax etc, means I'll be spending more of our kids' inheritance, but they would deal with it.
Have participants herein had "close calls" or even accidents with these tires due to hydroplaning or other problems. I thank anyone whose has some thoughts on this matter. Best wishes. Ralph

Honda should, at a minimum, put medium grade tires on their Pilots, rather than cutting corners with our safety at stake. It is disappointing to say the least. Best wishes. Ralph

kmazz,
I had a similar problem over a year back. My check engine light go on. I Took to the service department - need software update - no problem. Few days later - same problem reapeer again. Only after my third return they figure out that the problem was with a 'goose neck' of a gas tank had loose contact with gas cover cap. They replace 'goose neck' - never had this problem again.
Maybe some help? Normh.
