Hello boomer1b, the warranty booklet has no notations at all which I take full responsibility for not checking b4 I signed the papers. Only way I found out was by calling GM after you responded to my earlier post about an extended warranty I was interested in. GM told me the Monte went in sevice in January 2004 . I guess i owe you one as I never would have found out about this if it wasn't for your original advise. Thanks!! I've spoken to the dealership and Im getting nowhere at all. My salesman admits to telling me i get the full 36 months less the miles. GM says different. Coverage begins at the in-service date with a maximum of 36,000.This was a demo that the dealer registered in January and sold to me in October. I double & triple checked everything else. I missed the in service date info as I believed the in service date was going to be the purchase date or title date. Vehicle was never titled, only registered and that was done in January and have to eat the 10 months as my 36 months are up 1/07. I gave the dealer the option of buying me a 48 month/ 48K extended policy which should cost them about 300. but I doubt they will do it.
Anyhoo....I would wait till near the end of the mfr. 3/36. Then if I was gonna keep it a long time I would buy a GMPP extended warranty for that piece of mind.
I figure that $1500 or so warranty price will be worth it and pay for itself in just about any 1 repair nowadays !
You got a nice car for a great price and you learned a good lesson from the experience. It sounds like you did very well.
Still, I would be tempted to have some fun. I might keep pestering the dealer and complaining to the general manager that they are not standing behind what their salesman said. I might write to the president of GM and a bunch of other people and tell them about the experience. In general, I might want to be a real pain to them, and thoroughly enjoy doing it.
Sometimes I just feel like fighting a fire with a holocaust. This might be one of those times.
Just posting to help others, do not buy a mechanical repair agreement from them:(
I have a 96 Vette that developed pinhole leaks in the gas tank. The tank is $1800 plus about 8 hours labor to r&r (the rear "skin" of the Vette has to come off) for a total repair before tax of about $2500. It wasn't that long ago was it that you could buy a new car for that much:)
The bladder inside the tank is leaking gas into the metal outer shell & then through pinhole leaks. Nobody is sure why.
An "inspector" from the insurance co. was assigned (BTW I bought this third party policy from the Chevy dealer that has the car)
First refusal said it was "hit" by rocks or something. There is zero evidence of anything hitting the tank.
Dealer called for a second inspection/opinion.
Second refusal said outside weather influences caused the leaks. Well the leaks are from the inside and there is not much "weather" INSIDE a gas tank:)
At this point the dealer and I both know that the insurer is going to weasel out of this no matter what.
I politely & calmly pointed out that I would have it repaired elsewhere. I would get three written independent opinions from certified mechanics that the bladder inside had failed. I would sue in small claims court for the damages (about $2500 which is about what I paid a year ago for the warranty).
I told the dealer, sorry, but I had to sue him in small claims court as he sold me the contract - locally. I dealt with the service manager & general manager only.
After a couple of days the general manager took it up with the owner & the owner ok'd the repair at his expense. The owner of the dealership is the guy who would have to show up in small claims court - without a lawyer:) Car goes in tomorrow, $1800 gas tank has arrived:)
My moral is if you know you are in the right don't give in, also small claims court is your friend.
Having worked my way thru about 10 pages of this thread I realize that I took a HUGE chance buying this 3rd party policy. I was lucky I bought it thru the dealer & not online:) as now I have the local dealer to hammer on when the 3rd party company weasels on the contract.
I do tend to keep cars well maintained with service records and I think (if you do that) a MANUFACTURER service contract is a smart move - but shop around for it, you don't "have to" buy it where you buy the car:)
but "The owner of the dealership is the guy who would have to show up in small claims court - without a lawyer" isn't correct - there's no rule where you can't take a lawyer to small claims court, and a guy like a dealer principal, who has one on retainer, would be foolish not to bring the lawyer along...especially against an inexperienced (in legal matters) consumer.
I have an Automotive Warranty Services Inc policy that was purchased on 5/02 on a new car. It has never been used. I understand that I can cancel it.
CANCELLATION BY YOU
You may cancel this Agreement at any time. To cancel, you must mail this agreement to us or provide written notice to us. If you cancel this agreement within 90 days of the date issued, and you have not incurred a claim, a 100% refund of the agreement charge will be made less a $30. admin fee. If you cancel this agreement after 90 days (this is my scenario) a pro-rata refund will be made based on the greater of the time or the mileage used, less an admin fee of $30.
Here's the question, since the policy was never used does the pro rata apply?? How much would I get back? It cost $1589.
Thanks:)
PS - different car than the one that's leaking gas - wonder why I want to ditch this policy???
In California there IS a rule - no lawyers can be in court with the principals on court day, I know, been there, done that. Don't know about your state:)
So if I bought on 5/02 and it's now 11/04 that's 30 out of 72 months. 30/72 times $1585 is $660.
So they will say I used $660 of it (even though it's NEVER BEEN USED) I would get $1585 less $660 Less admin $30. equals $895 refund?
I guess $895 is better than a piece of paper that's worthless? Right?
Miles used are 25K out of 100K so I assume they would calculate on the time rather than the miles?
Thanks for your post:)
I'm going to see if I can get a GMPP for a reasonable price as I'll likely keep this Z71 Suburban a while - great car to bring the kids stuff to college & back:)
Purchasing a 2001 Jeep GC today and need to find out about an extended warranty. Currently they are offering me a 1 month/1000 mile warranty because the factory warranty has recently ran out. Anyone have advice on what I should be looking for in reference to specifics coverages and price? Thanks for your help!
I just bought my Impala yesterday (YAAAY!), in large part to help on Edmunds boards and fightingchance.com (they give great advice and a fax information program for only $30. No, I am not affiliated with them).
I got quotes from 5 of the fleet managers on MasterGuard 72month/90K mile $0 deductible extended warranty. The highest was $2145, the lowest was $1315, and second lowest was $1715 (which he said was +$150 above cost). When I bought this car, I got this fleet manager to come down to $1895 from $2048 because I told her this. But she wouldn't budge any further. I know the really low bid was an incentive to get me to buy the car, and I didn't know if I could get maybe $1500 opportunity from her later. I felt really odd calling the other fleet manager from this fleet manager's office, telling her I was purchasing my car from someone else instead of her, and asking her price on the extended warranty.
How do you think I did? If I call today, which is the next day, can I stop her from sending it in and try to buy from the other person? I'd wait till I know the first one is cancelled to purchase from the second. I'd want my money back.
That's not really the sort of service we encourage here... asking other members to do basic homework for you. If you put "GM warranties" into Google, you'll come up with a load of sites that sell GM warranties.
When you've narrowed it down, you can come back and ask whether any of our members have had experience with a certain company, or whether the price you're being quoted is reasonable. Rather than being a "yellow pages," we're more of a member-to-member experience sharing board.
Hope we can help you with your choice!

I have HAD EXPERIENCE with Black Chevy aka gm outlet also Capper Auto for a planned GMPP purchase.
They offered a GMPP warranty at a price ANY GM dealer in my area wouldn't even touch!
There are a few other folks here who have purchased from them successfully.
Even a few like ME who got BURNED by a 3rd party warranty company ! I have NO problem sending folks to a honest company who won't STEAL their money!..........
Hi bhw77. I would be more than happy to try to point you in the right direction. I have heard good things about the site that boomer1b helpfully posted a link to, http://www.gmoutlet.com . Community members also seem to have had good luck getting attractive prices on official GM extended warranties from http://www.capperautocenter.com/ .
Hi everyone, I bought a demonstrator in October with 5000 miles on it. Long boring story but I am attempting to get a copy of the service records for the car from my salesman. He informed me that when they enter my vin it comes up clean. No service performed. They do not write up routine oil changes. Now I am a bit concerned and have requested in writing when the oil changes were done. I was told that the last oil change was done once the car was put back on the lot to be sold (after the manager turned in the demonstrator at about 5000 miles) I have been lied to on other issues with this car so Im really hesitant to take their word for it that the oil changes were performed. Is this common or do I really need to press these folks for the info in writing. Right now my car has 7300 miles on it so if an oil change was never done, will it screw up my warranty?? I've been told that i can get one done now & the mechanic can tell if at least the filter had ever been changed. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks Juice. I plan on taking my car to the same mechanic who serviced my camaro all these years. Been using him since 1988. I even drove to him after I moved 20 miles away for simple oil changes. He is a cert small repair shop and and authorized GMPP repair center. The dealer is not going to so much empty the ashtray in this car(if there was one);)
It PAYS to be thorough! I get my chops busted on a regular basis for driving into another county for an oil change on a 14 year old car but my guy is so thorough and totally honest, I know it's the right thing to do. I made an appointment with him for next Saturday to take care of the Monte Carlo so I feel better already. thanks, -juice, for all your help!!
I have just bought a low mileage 2002 Lexus LS430 at a bargain price. I expect to keep this car for a long time. Any work done on a Lexus by Lexus is by definition expensive so am gambling that I will finally benefit from a 6yr/100K warranty. I have narrowed my choice of a VSC provider to Warranties Direct and Ultimate Warranty Corp. WD is the more published while Ultimate is only available through the Warranty4Wheels brokerage. WD charges $500 extra for the same advertised coverage. Does anyone have experience of working with either service? Do they misbehave when asked to honor their contracts?
I'd be weary of any extended warranty not backed by the manufacturer. I've read to many horror stories here in Edmunds to even consider one. I personally would spend the extra money for a Lexus backed warranty if you feel you really need any extended warranty. The peace of mind for me would far exceed the money I saved on the cheaper non-manufacturer warranty. Just my $.02. Better to put the money in the bank and go with the odds that your Lexus will stay reliable with the regular scheduled maintenance.
I live in New York and am trying to find out what I should pay for a Major Guard GMPP 100,000 mile/72 month, $0 deductible extended warranty on a new 2005 Impala. The best price I got so far was $2,600. I can't seem to get any information anywhere on what this warranty costs the dealer and what I should pay for it. I hope you guys can help me. Thanks in advance.
I bought my Sienna 2 weeks ago and the dealer sold me a 6yrs/100,000 miles extended warranty for $1095 with $100 deductable from Western General. Anyone with experience with Western General? I am wondering if I should cancel it and get and Toyota extended warranty instead.
Hi helloagain. Toyota's official extended warranties are excellent. I never purchase extended warranties for my vehicles and I actually have one on my truck. Toyota's extended warranty is basically an extension of its normal warranty coverage. It is much more likely to step up to the plate and cover a repair in a timely manner than some random third party that has no vested interest in your repeat business would be. If I was in your situation, I would either purchase an official Toyota policy for your vehicle or not purchase any extended coverage at all. I have heard too many horror stories about independent warranty providers giving their policy holders the run around, about service departments having to jump through all sorts of hoops to get repairs approved, and worst of all independent warranty companies going bankrupt leaving their policy holders without any coverage at all to go with a third party warranty.
Hi, this is my first time on this site. I really like it. Good info. I am just curious how your customers react when you show them your cost? What do you do if they want money off?
I'm not in F&I anymore, but I'll address this as if I was -
"I am just curious how your customers react when you show them your cost? What do you do if they want money off?"
Money off from what? If I show you my COST book, that indicates how much the contracts cost the dealership. How can you take money off of cost? You can't...
Customers would usually show some shock at the pricing, and then go into "let's figure out which one we need" mode. Finance department profits actually went UP, even though my "per unit" average on warranties went down - I went from a 40% service contract selling rate to over 70%.
I would have to disagree with statement. The policies that my company offeres have 0 deductible on new and used vehicle ESCs and many of our finance deals are 0% interest. Although a person may sell their vehicle before the ESC expites, the ESC will definitely increase the resale value.
There will always be some mark up and so if show the customer the dealerships cost price then they may want to only pay $100 above cost like another person on the site had stated. How would you handle that? I am a new F&I person so any suggestions would help. Thanks
I just purchased an extended warranty for my 2002 VW beetle. They would not give me a copy of the contract in advance (red flag). I signed the papers, and have been researching. Fidelity Warranty Services does not look like a very good company - but I don't know. Does anyone have this warranty? Please help.. I have 60 days to cancel. I'm considering purchasing Warranty Direct online - but I'm apprehensive to buy on the internet. That's why I went to the dealer - but I think I got ripped off, and got a lesser warranty.
You may want to research the local bbb report on 1Source. They got in over their heads with ebay. Both 1Source and Warranty Direct pay a fee to Car Tips to have them (advertise) re sponsor them.
Just purchased a GM warranty plan on my Chev PU at a good price based on info in this forum. Anyone know of a Lincoln/Ford dealer making good deals on factory ext warranties.
The best I was able to find 1 1/2 years ago was thru Mid-States Ford Truck Sales Inc. in Des Moines, Iowa and I live here in VA. No problem and very thorough. Just a few faxes back and forth after contacting them. On my new Mountaineer. Virgie. You can find the online. If you cannot post back and I will give you the details. Virgie
I'm picking up our 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L today. Dealer offered 7yr/100000 warranty for $ 1095. Should I buy it? Is this a good price? 100% refunded if not used anytime. If you take the warranty, do I have to maintain all the maintenance records and am I forced to do exactly per the schedule in the manual? Thanks in advance
what is the deductible? And is it the official Honda factory (Honda Care) warranty?
If yes and if the deductible is $50 or $0, then that sounds like a good price when compared to www.hondacares.com
I must point out, however, and maybe you know this but just weren't clear in your message, that is is not 100% refunded if not used. That's true for a certain amount of time, but the amount refunded goes down as the warranty period is used up. So, in a year, you may get (and I'm making this number up) 85% back if you cancel the contract. After 2 years, 75%, etc, etc.

Got an e-mail today from fordwarrantys.com which is Lombard Ford in Ct. I checked with them maybe a year ago when researching vehicles...ended up buying an Envoy XL instead of the Expedition. Anyway, they sent a note offering a $200 discount on a genuine Ford ESP plan from their site. Don't know if this is a one shot deal or what, but it is good through Dec 21, 2004. If anyone wants the warranty you can try for the discount... PROMO CODE 96127 . I don't need it but maybe one or more of you can use it.
Just posted about a discount offered on Ford ESP warranties and noticed at the bottom of their page they have a link to Honda Care warranty provider...don't know anything about them, but you might want to check them out for Honda and also Acura extended warranties. curryhondacare.com is the site for Honda or curryacuracare.com for Acura. (If somebody knows about them or tries them, please post so we have some more info.) These are from Curry Honda in Chicopee, Ma
Search under car and truck warranties for a broker of service agreements through the internet. I bought one for 500.00 less than what the dealer wanted. Same coverages and nicer folks to boot!

I agree that you should hang onto it until you have a little equity, basically enough for the downpayment on your next car (from a different dealer!).

Did you confront the dealer over it?
I would call the mfr. 800# and ask for details or help on the miles and time........
They OWE you that.............
Like I posted my truck had 100 or so transport miles and they were noted in my warranty booklet.
BUT I made sure of it and for any other problems (esp. the GM CSK issue) BEFORE I signed the papers!

I'd change the oil now, to get a baseline. Maybe even take my business some place else, to a place you trust. And keep reciepts.
7500 miles is not that much, some oil change intervals are 10,000 miles or more nowadays.

I bought a used Miata and the seller even showed me the receipt for the 30k service, which he did early (I bought it with 27k).
Still, I wanted a base line and did the service again anyway.
Seems wasteful?
Not really, they had changed the gear oil in the tranny but they forgot the rear differential fluid. It was brown, clowdy, and basically spent.
So I might have saved a $900 limited-slip differential because I was thorough.

The Sandman :-)
But those 2 sites listed www.gmoutlet.com and capper auto center listed a few posts back have the BEST GMPP pricing that I or others have found!
Best off calling them for pricing.
Remember tho.....You can purchase a GMPP up till the end of the mfr. 3/36 warranty.
Sure the pricing is different. But like me..Am Igonna keep the car? Will I want a different car, AmI having problems with the car?
I guess it just depends...........good luck!
