I reread the manual. Sure enough right there in black and white it said that it auto locks BOTH doors when you start the engine and ONLY unlocks the driver's door when you turn off the engine. What kind of bone head thinking is that? I'm getting in the habit of manually unlocking the doors when I shut off the engine. It's either this or take the truck back and have them remove the security system.
I love the power of this truck. I also love the rumble of the exhaust. You can't be near the truck without knowing it's a V8.
I think the blue looks great and I agree that the black fender flares that come with the TRD package look really good on the SR5's! I also like the blue with the black trim on the SR5s.

Tundra updatel; After 1500 miles I've been able to accurately track 3 tank. I've had two tanks at 16.5mpg and one at 15.5. I know it's how I'm driving and the speeds I'm driving that make the variations. I'm completely used to and comfortable with my truck now, and absolutely love it!
Roger's Tundra 1600 mile update(4x4 Limited):
1st tank: 14.0 mpg
2nd tank: 16.0 mpg
3rd tank: 15.5 mpg
All city driving except for a 150 mile trip for the Eagles home opener.(should have stayed home)
I definately like the sound of the Tundra accelerating from a stop light so the mileage should get better after I get over that kick. This is the first V8 I've had since my first car in 1975.
Problems to date:
The dome light lens cap keeps falling off! Seems very intermittent too. Sometime it will stay up for days, other times it wont stay up for longer than 60 seconds. Maybe I'll use a little velcro. The other problem came about from the dealership installation of the V3000 alarm. They didn't reinstall the ductwork properly and the little crotch cooler under the steering wheel didn't blow.
Ordered a Roll-N-Lock(non-vinyl)cover but after not recieving it in over 4 weeks I called the manufacturer and found they weren't making them for the Tundra. Then ordered a specialty cover electrically retractable cover. I hope I have better luck with this one.
Seems better here. My question on #665 is: Has anyone done any towing with a Tundra? I own (and love) my 98 4Runner, but it has limited towing capacity and I can't rent a travel trailer. Looked at and tested Sierra's, F150's and Silverado's. I'm now going to purchase a 2000 Tundra, because of my good experiences with my 4Runner, and the numerous comments and complaints in other forums about thes vehicles.

MY PROBLEM is that I am being told that Toyota is making very few LTDs with bench seats and that I may have to wait quite some time.
I can't wait! Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I getting the runaround?

Pace-Edwards does make a vinyl-over-aluminum cover similar to the Roll-n-lock.

I've made the sound go away by drying the gaskets with a towel and applying Armor-All. The Armor-All makes the gasket a little oily and slick and also makes the water bead up and roll off. I haven't heard the squeak since I've done this.

Trannies shiftin hard on 1st to second.
Noise and creakin on that cab.
Hard startin and such.
Vibration in the cab and on them seats.
If anyone know why please post it back to that #665. Anyone here know why them limited ones not come with that factory hitch? Anyone get that class 4 hitch on them sr5 ones? Good luck on these ones here!

The power retractable cover is made by specialty covers. The Pace-Edwards and the Roll-n-Lock do a vinyl over aluminum cover. The Roll-n-Lock also does a aluminum cover with a black power coat finish. I ordered the non-vinyl Roll-n-Lock and after not receiving it for a month I called the factory and found they were not making them for the Tundra(they will do the vinyl cover). I then canceled my order and ordered the Specialty cover from Dave's Tonneau. Should be in some time next week. I'll post details when(if?) I get it.

BTW, I ordered the Roll-n-Lock through California Concepts. They charged my credit card as soon as I ordered it. Four weeks later, after getting bull from California Concepts about why my order had not shipped, I called the R-N-L factory and found they weren't making the cover for the Tundra. Had to call California Concepts many times to get a credit posted to my card.
Moral : Don't deal with California Concepts!
I've narrowed the problem down to the brake lighting system, as the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is on the same circuit as the brake lights. So when the brake lights flash, the ECU senses I've put on the brakes, and (1) disengages the Cruise Control and (2) drops the RPM and tries to shift into a lower gear. I tied into the brake lighting system about 18" from the rear lights, so I have basically bypassed all the junction boxes and splices in the system. Someone told me I need to install a diode to prevent the current from the alternating flashing unit from "backflushing" back into the ECU. Can anyone tell me what kind of diode I should look for? I'm assuming I would install the diode between the splice I made and the ECU. I've disconnected the flashing system to prevent any damages to the truck.
Otherwise, I've had my Tundra Limited for 3 months now, and have over 4200 miles on it, with no other problems. I too am very pleased with the quite, comfortable ride, but I have not experienced any of the shimmey or rattles that others seem to have experienced. Mileage is what I sort of expected - 15.5 town, and 18.5 highway. Still get a lot of oohs and aahs in parking lots and a lot of looks while driving. I have the offroad package, and I find the ride comfortable and pleasing, not stiff and hard as I had expected.
Anyway, if any of you Tundra Fans out there can help me out, I'd sure appreciate it.

Try this.
Diodes can be 50-100A ( I doubt that your light draws anywhere near that much amperage, but in electrical circuits, you need margin) silicon retifiers. Look in the phone book for electronics suppliers. Often, there is a used parts supplier in you area to get these rectifiers cheap.

I'll try to keep this informative and short, my apologies if it runs long.
I've been reading the Tundra posts for a few weeks now, and would like to thank everyone for the useful input.
This summer I fell in love with the Dakota R/T, but woke up one morning wondering what it would be like to have one when it's 10 years old. Scratch the R/T.
Having been a chevy man all my life, I liked the promise of the new Silverado. Truthfully, the behavior of a certain chevy loving poster to this group turned me off to some degree. I'd feel like these were my peers on the highway. And then I woke up one morning wondering what it would be like when it's 12 years old. Maybe O.K., but my experience suggests the interior, buttons and handles would be lying on the cab floor.
So I looked at the Tundra: A little spartan compared to the goodie laden americans, and somewhat overpriced, but god, what a beautiful power train. (Oh yeah, nice ride too).
My wife and I have been driving for 70 years between us and never owned a japanese car until this year. We did'nt want to start now and tried hard to "Buy American", but there is a limit to what we will suffer so Detriot can keep it's management layers in place. (O.K. enough politics).
I just bought a black limited x2 yesterday 'n haven't slept since. I just keep going out and getting in the truck and driving. I LOVE IT!
I would, however, like to toss my two cents in regarding a couple of issues raised in these discussions.
The issues:
1. Lexus Truck
No way. I mentioned that point to my wife and she sniggered at me. If you have never gotten the chance to drive an LS400 or LX470 for a few days, then you may not know what luxury can be.
The Tundra's a great truck. An Avalon Truck? But even a short trip in the wife's LS400 humbles me and my Limited. Of course, she declined to compete with carrying a half ton of rock in the back seat, so my male pride's intact.
2. Price
I don't know about the rest of the world, but the dealers are negotiating around the California Bay area. I grabbed my checkbook and headed down the freeway to every Toyota dealer along the way. the first two dealers did'nt have limiteds. The third dealer (25 miles away) accepted my first and final offer of $2200 off MSRP so fast that I think I screwed myself a bit. (I know some of you have done a lot better, but I haggle like s**t).
3. Wheel Vibration
I test drove the truck on the freeway. I drove it home on the freeway at 60 - 70. Then with 50 miles on the odometer I suddenly got a bad shimmey at 65 that does not stop until I'm down to 35 or so.
This ain't wheel balance or tire pressure. Balance would have resonant frequencies at certain speeds and pressure's on the money.
Maybe poor balance kick starts this problem, but I think there is an issue even if you don't feel it (yet).
My humble theory is that the caster angle may be so small (these trucks sure steer light)that any play in the linkage may start a feedback loop. Maybe I could test this by turning sharp to break the oscillation, but I kinda don't want to try this at 65 MPH. I'll talk to service in a day or so. Do you have any thoughts?

The problem that you are experiencing could possibly be solved with the strategic (and correct) installion of several diodes. I do not have a Tundra; (am searching for a new vehicle at this time) however, with all the additional electrical devices that you have added (even tho' strobes do generally use less current than conventional) have you done an analysis on the additional electrical demands that you have placed on your alternator/battery?
How much juice are you using when all your emergency lights, regular lights, AC, windshield wipers etc. are operating and can your electrical system handle it without an upgraded alternator?
You may be asking your electrical system to do too much for you and creating a voltage drop at the ECU which may cause the problem. You didn't say, but did you also install a 2-way radio as well, which also taxes the electrical system.
In addition, strobes do radiate RF energy and may be getting into your ECU as well.
Try contacting the strobe manufacturer for assistance (Whelen strobes had an excellent engineering department that helped me solve some unique problems with Chevy suburbans that we used for ems vehicles)
To select the right diode, figure out how much current the load draws distal to the device that current flows through the diode, and then either double it and buy a single diode to handle that amount of current or place two of the same diodes in parallel of the current rating needed. If you match a diode near your rating, you may experience alot of heat dissapated by that device, which may break down or it could melt other wires if they are in close contact with it.
For instance: In our suburban, the brake light circuit drew 6 amps at the point where the diode was to be installed. I installed 2 - 6 amp rated diodes in parallel at that point. The diodes were NOT available at radio shack; but, were easily obtained through an industrial electronic supplier. I believe the 6 amp diode was an ECG-5814....however, the supplier can easily cross reference his catalog for the right device. You just need to know what size. Cost per diode was < $5 each at that time (1990).
h bosi is correct.....you do need margin, so don't skimp.
