the gasoline market is very complicated and unpredictable

Couldn't agree more. Why is the price so much higher in the Midwest right now? It can't be gas taxes, at least for OH and IN.

Motorists Furious Over $4.50 Gas Near Orlando International Airport

"The high prices are not illegal since the state says businesses can charge whatever the market bears for gasoline, unless the governor has declared an emergency.

And, gas stations are not required to erect gas signs showing how much customers will pay, the report said."

Sounds like quite the Mickey Mouse operation!
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
What the gas station operator is hoping for is that the tourists fill up their rentals despite the high price as they don't want to waste time looking for a different station. Besides, most people don't hit Orlando more than once a year, if that.

That is why I generally fill up 10 miles prior to the airport.

Is that much different than the municipalities who charge 15-25% hotel room taxes (and rental car taxes) targeted at the tourists? (Or who finance their sports arenas in that manner?)
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
If all the hotels have to charge you the tax, that's just a burden. If one hotel is asking a price that's way higher than what seems fair, that's gouging (although as the article says, it's not illegal unless there's a hurricane or other civil emergency going on).

Seems like requiring the stations to post their prices would be an easy way of adequately notifying everyone - this station apparently doesn't tell you the price until you turn on the pump lever.

here on Tuesday and Wednesday by 12 - 22 cents, most by the 22 cents. The cheapest petrol on my commute is $3.05, down from $3.25 on Monday.

    210,

It is kind of nice, in a not so nice way, that Chi-town isn't the only area with +$3.00 fuel prices (your listing for Detroit). Was thinking of making a road trip to Indy this weekend but it is doubtful.

Have a good holiday everyone! :)

a lot of it has to do with the different blends of gasoline used across the country. I think, maybe somebody could check, there are about 40 different ones? anyhow, because different parts of the country require different blends of gas, the oil companies can't move excess supply to areas where demand is high, and supplies are low. for instance, the oil compaines have plenty of stock in Ohio, but inventories in kansas are very low. they can't just send the excess in ohio to kansas via pipeline or tanker truck. the stations in kansas wouldn't be allowed to sell it because it didn't meet certain requirements. So, because of the excess, prices in ohio drop, and in kansas (with tight inventories) prices go up.

because of a patchwork of regulations, the gasoline market if regional, not national.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
I dunno; even within Ohio, there's been quite a variance. I filled up this morning with 87 at a Meijer's in Mansfield for $2.78. But as I headed southeast toward Wheeling, WV, prices crept up higher and higher until they reached $2.99 just before the WV line.

Then in WV, the prices were back down to what I paid in Mansfield.

In Front Royal VA (Warren County), 87 could be had for $2.51; when I arrived home in central VA, the going price was $2.59, same as when I left last Saturday.

You found the regional gas price variances across Ohio. The price variation in one spot is amazing. I've been told that those price variations don't happen by someone here months ago. But they do. In the Dayton region last week the prices were $2.59x for nominal low price in a part of the area. Then the prices rose, almost in unison over two days, to $2.99x by Tuesday morning. The pattern is that if the price doesn't rise at most stations on Thursday for the weekly rise, then it goes up on Tuesday before a holiday weekend meriting lots of travel. That also occurs with some special events in the area bring in lots of auto travel.

Now by Friday morning of the holiday travel weekend, the prices are down to $2.75x at the lower quartile of station pricing. I would love to see the box plots for pricing here over a year period done week-by-week. The median price variation shown in the daytongasprices.com plots don't show the greater variation in the lower priced stations which many people seek out to fill up at lower prices, part of the time when they are lower.

Currently lower pricing is at $2.75x but many stations are still at $2.99x.

Well, its not done by state. I'm not sure how they determine it, but I believe its tied to air quality. Anyhow, thats only part or the reason. There's also different distribution costs, local taxes, how much the stations want to make off it, and a few other reasons.

for example, I live in central va. just 30 miles north, gas runs about a dime more. why? some of the counties up there charge an additional tax to fund mass transit. there is also the much higher cost of living and therefore overhead at the stations that cause them to need a larger profitt. How busy the station is can also have an effect. a station pumping 400,000 gallons a month can charge less than one pumping 100,000 per months.

Gas prices had dropped to a media $2.85-2.89 with some at 2.75 over the Sunday/Monday period.

Today they're all going to rise to $3.099. The first have started.

You win the lottery with the $2.89  .

Well, they are being raised, almost in group to $3.09.

I suspect that's because they came back to work today and decided there's a hurricane, so raise the price.

$2.89 is about all I ever won at Powerball.

Some stations fell to $2.73 here yesterday; haven't been out today to see if they've jumped. $2.89 to $3.09 is a big jump.
  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
The price of 87 octane jumped $.10 while I was pumping it in Coral Springs Florida. Don't quite understand why the sudden jump, as the hurricane hasn't done that much damage as far as I've heard. Am I correct here? Just makes me angry that the gas already in the ground can jump that much...feels like gouging to me and wonder why the government allows this underhanded practice to continue. Other commodities don't seem to follow this trend so I'm really angry about this.
Hopefully powercells or some alternative fuel source will be found so we can all tell big oil where to stick their pumps!!

    Here too Imi,

At first I thought it was a misfortune to fill-up yesterday morning for $3.04 but I considered that lucky when I left work yesterday evening. Within a 12-hour period (6am to 6pm) the petrol prices jumped anywhere from 15 to 25 cents!! We're now in the $3.19 to $3.25 range for 87 octane.

What the cuff is going on? :confuse: Is it because Felix jumped to a Cat 3? Is it that the speculators remembered they artificially extended the summer driving season to September 30th? Someone got a hang-nail? Sky is too blue in Dubai?

While everyone else has been going down the last month or so we've been getting nailed

Diesel and Unleaded have traded spots as the most expensive 6 times in the last 12 months. Now Unleaded is cheaper.

    From This Week In Petroleum

I saw it later that day just east of Holland, for as low as $2.90 but with oil prices breaking the $80 a barrel record they say prices should rise over the next few weeks instead of dropping like they traditionally do in the fall.

I filled up my '85 Silverado with 93 octane at the local Citgo. It was $2.959 per gallon. I think 89 octane was $2.859 and 87 was $2.699.

last time I had filled up was on September 3rd, and prices were the same.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
at $2.699/$2.859/$2.959 per gallon at the local Citgo in Glenn Dale, MD. I have a feeling this is going to be a rough billing cycle on my credit card. Filled up the truck on Wednesday, my '76 LeMans yesterday, and the Intrepid this morning. LeMans got a whopping 13.5 mpg on its last tank. 202 miles, and about 110 of that was driving back from Carlisle. I made the mistake of putting 89 octane in it though. Even though it's not exactly high performance, it seems to have an appetite for premium. And to be fair, most of the rest of that mileage was local driving, so maybe 13.5 mixed with something like that isn't TOO evil.
  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,017
I paid $2.79 yesterday at Speedway here in Wyoming, Mi. It was the best price I've seen in a long time but with oil prices on the rise I'd be willing to bet that price will go back up by the end of the week.

at the usual Meijer's was $3.049, a drop of 8 cents from last week. I did see a couple of stations @ 2.989 but most are still running in the $3.11 ~ 3.15 range. Higher in the city.

May be time to pull the Olds out and fill it up before the prices jump again since it's going to get cloudy in the next couple of days.

I paid 2.95 at the Sam's Club in Crystal Lake ... and most of the Randall Rd stations were in the $2.97 range.

Paid $2.59 for 87 at Hess yesterday and today (2 different vehicles).

The going price seems to be $2.65 -- looks like we're not going to get that nice decline we got last year at this time.
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
We're starting to go down. Yesterday by home it was $2.98 but on the commute it's still over the $3 barrier, with the highest being right at work, $3.11 for 87.

I saw gas was $2.52 per gallon on the way to work. But, they have a gimmick where you can get at least $0.03 off a gallon with a receipt from the affiliated grocery store. That would make it $2.49 a gallon. :P
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
We dropped a whole penny yesterday; lowest is $2.97, with the average being $3.01. Maybe it'll drop below $3 after tomorrow since summer will be officially over...but wait, is summer driving season actually tied to the season of summer? :confuse:
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
We're still holding steady at $2.75 here in Boise. I don't think we've had much change for a month or more now.

I did notice that diesel jumped 4 cents to $3.09 at a nearby Sinclair.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
Most places now have 87 at $2.69, up a dime from a week or so ago. Hess is $2.64.

I noticed at Sheetz that 93 is $2.89 and diesel is $2.99.
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342
While there seems to exist a disconnect between oil prices and gasoline price I don't think it is possible for wholesale gasoline prices not to impact the price at the pump. The NYMEX price for unleaded gasoline had gone up about 20 cents in the last 4 weeks. I guarantee that pump prices are heading up in the near future.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
So much for holding steady. Regular bumped 4 cents to $2.79 around town today. Midgrade is usually 2.91, but most stations are trying to hold premium under $3.00. It's a relative percentage bargain here at $2.99 most spots.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
We are matching you now. Costco regular $2.79 Premium $2.99. We are 24 cents higher this year than last year on this day. Is it a sign of recession or inflation?

Is it a sign of recession or inflation?

    Yes. :shades:
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Maybe the former pushed by the latter.

I was hoping the prices would stay down a bit till I am all moved. 6 weeks making a trip per day and I still got about a month to go. Where did I get so much JUNK?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Stuff happens. We sold or gave away everything in '99 that didn't fit in the minivan - we had been in that house 15 years. A few months after settling in again, we had a house full of crap.

I hope some of those trips at $2.79 a gallon are to the dump, 'cause you don't own stuff, it owns you. ;)
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I have a 20X25 foot shop at the old place that is filling up with stuff for a garage sale. What does not sell in ONE day goes to the Salvation Army. Our price just went up from $2.63 just a couple weeks ago. This little V6 Ranger only gets about 2 MPG better than my fullsize GMC V8.
