About how long after you get your order number does it take to get your truck. I got my order number on Aug 13th. When do you think I should start looking for a truck in my driveway???
Anyone had luck ordering from factory at the time of ordering a 2000 Silverado the folding hard Tonneau Cover? Supposed to be much cheaper this way, but it is on restriction according to my dealer so can't get right now. Kind of like ordering the 4th door. Anybody had luck ordering this option?
The dealer I'm working with told me today that my order would go in the first week of Sept on that months allocation, and that I should have an order# by sept 10, and should know the build date by oct 1, wait it gets better........he also said build date would be approx. third week of oct. with delivery two weeks later. elapsed time 9 weeks. Now I ask my cyber friends, is this dealer a straight shooter or a bull shooter......anyway the order is in and the wait begins....tttiiiccckkk ttoooccckkk zzzzzzzz night all!
First things First- THANKS to all that have shared info on here as it helped me purchase a great truck! Second - I agree with Davydd - NO PROBLEMO- as I am driving a new 99 Z71 LT w/ 5.3L and Dif Lock and TRL options. No PROBLEMS , NONE! (except I can't get enough time behind the wheel driving this OUTSTANDING Truck!) No Vibration, rough shifts, etc. I empathize with the owners that have had some problems as there will always be a few problems with any new vehicle (regardless of mfg.) That's why there's a warranty and lemon laws (two safety nets!) To all the previous Post's of problems, worries, concerns, possible buyers, etc., let me apply some basic logic to alleviate some of your concerns. Hypothetically speaking, let us pretend there is a significant problem with the 5.3 leaking oil, and numerous other combinations with vibration problems, wind noises, rough shifting, squeaks, etc etc and then put a conservative estimate of 2 days as an average time (conservative for these types of “major problems”) for each truck to be in the Dealers shop for repairs for these problems ..and then estimate that the average dealer sells 3 trucks a day (again very conservative) wouldn’t you see trucks just stacked up outside the service garage just trying to get all these problems resolved??? Has anybody seen a service department stacked up with new Silverado’s or Seirra’s?? With this simple logic if there were significant problems the trucks would be stacking up like cordwood for repairs. I checked the service departments on 5 separate dealerships to see what new Silverado’s & GMC's were in there for (as part of my homework towards buying a new truck) .found two in for minor adjustment which I haven’t even found posted on this board yet. Now I’ve said more than my share and close with --Enjoy your new trucks to all current and future owners Anthony
does anyone know if the door locks on the 2000 sierras and/or silverado's have that annoying locking feature the 99's have the doesn't unlock when you put it in park, or stop. Also when can i anticipate the arrivial of the crew cab with the new body style. Greg
YA! Thanks for the good news for a change. Makes the wait even harder!
kevin,
well maybe it's changed for 2000 or as you say because it's a GMC (doubt that). I have a call in to my dealer and will ask. I would really love to have the battery factory installed. What dealer did you use?
hai8,
There is a LOT of discussion on that issue in the various topics, look around. The bottom line is yes, you should get the locker. Otherwise you have a 1wd truck in the rain or other slippery conditions. I have one now and hate it. Slips pulling into traffic in the rain, got stuck on a grassy field of all things, slips in the mud at the dump... (of course my tires suck too but that's another story)
Thanks for the information, I thought that was right, but I wanted to verify it with someone else, because I was getting different answers from the dealer. I intend to try and get a new harness because in a year I intend to purchase a fifth wheel travel trailer. Some good news, I have had the truck 2500LS for app. 6 weeks, no problems truck runs great, mileage has been improving with each tank, best tank got me 15.1 mpg. For all of you out there with orders, hang in there and keep checking the dealer lots for new arrivals as I had an order in and was getting nowhere, and then this showed up on a dealer lot in Delaware, I live in PA. If you don't stay on top of your dealer and salesman, they will not tell you any information unless you keep asking. I do wish there was a better way to complain to GM about there ordering system, in plain English it stinks. I did not get the color I wanted, but I got everything else except the outside mirrors which are the camper type. Thought I wouldn't like them but they seem to be ok, I would have preferred the remotes, but that was the only trade off. The truck had a couple of additions that I had not ordered (bucket seats, limited slip rear and tow hooks), other than that it was as I wanted.
I have been watching this discussion for weeks now, ever since I decided to buy a new Chevy. I looked at the 99s but could not find one anywhere that I liked, so I ordered a 2000.
And now, 6 weeks later, after the first dealer gave me the run-a-round on the order (they also called me a liar when I repeated a comment that the made to me over the phone)I went to another lot about 40 mins away and found my new Silverado on their lot.
It is a 1500 LS Ext Cab Z71 Med Grey Met w/ matching fender flares. 5.3L, 3.73 gears, bucket seats, cassette w/cd, autotrac 4x4 and towing. It is about $2000 more than what I was trying to order, but this dealer didn't give me any crap, and didn't try to sell me something I didn't want. I decided to spend more because it was there, it looked awesome, and I was tired of waiting.
I am picking it up this morning and will be checking it closely for any of the problems mentioned in this group. I'll keep you informed. Hopefully, I won't find any problems that have been found on the 99's in this group.
gta: like mentioned, the locks are dealer programmable, so you should be able to get them to work the way you want. I like the lock-as-you-drive-away feature, and also like the auto-unlock-when-key-is-removed feature on my 2000.
I also read all the posts here before buying my truck, and must say glad I'm very glad I bought the Silverado. Its been damn near perfect! Excellent ride, smooth engine, great shifting tranny, zero problems, and decent mileage 16.5-18.9 in 2.4K miles. No other truck did it for me like the Silverado.
Gordo , brought up the question of the tonneau cover a week ago on this list with no replies. Its feature E95 and says tonneau cover( not hard or soft) the price is $240. But on one of the first few pages of the 2000 Silverado brouchere it shows a picture of a truck with a soft tonneau. Later in the brouchere it shows 5 dealer installed options one being the hard tonneau. I called the parts dept and they said its $677 plus installation. I'm guessing the one you order with the truck is the soft, and the one you order from the dealer is the hard. But I cann't get a firm answer on this. ...... Rich
So you got the illusive camper mirrors, how do you like them? The dealers I spoke with didn't even know they existed much less whether they were power or manual. I ordered them and have since learned that they are manual (too bad) but have only seen a picture in the 99 brochure. Do they have the wide angle bit as a separate piece of glass, and is it that way on both sides or only the driver's? Is the wide angle portion big enough to actually use, it looks small in the picture. Thank goodness they telescope in and out so they don't look like Dumbo ears like the Ford SD! Don't worry about the wiring, you never know what the 5th wheel will need exactly anyway so it can be handled after you get it.
My salesperson is out so I can't ask about the dual batteries yet but I looked on the KBB site and it shows the restriction for Chevy but not for GMC even though the codes are the same. This is crazy because the trucks are the same other than trim so now I'm confused but hopeful. Thanks for the tip!
vince the camper mirrors are indeed manual, thought that would be a problem in parking lots but so far they are ok haven't had to readjust them yet. The passenger side is not convex it does have a bad blind spot, I put a little convex mirror on and it helps, strange but they do put a convex spot in the lower left corner of the drivers side.
I too have been debating over whether to get a Z71 or the Z85 because I have been told that the Z71 is too stiff for every day use. I will mostly commute in the Detroit area, which has terrible roads and will occasionally pull a boat (3500 lb).
But, my main question is what exactly comes with the Z71? The Edmund's site lists bigger shocks, off-road jounce bumpers, stabilizer bars, and the larger air cleaner. But, the window sticker only mentions the shocks and the air cleaner. Looked under the rear end expecting to find a rear stabilizer bar like others have mentioned on this site, but couldn't find one. Also, I assume that the jounce bumpers are the reddish "bump stops", but all the trucks (even the base 2wd) had the same ones. I'm also pretty sure that the Z71 includes the skid plates, but that's not mentioned either. So, if anyone out there knows FOR SURE what all the Z71 includes, please let me know.
i dont think the Z-71 package is all what its cracked up to be. i think a lot of people buy them just so they can say its a Z-71. i ordered the Z-85 on my 3/4 ton and cant wait till it gets in(the Z-71 package isnt available on the 3/4 ton anyway) . you are right about what comes with the package though. you know what makes me laugh? when people buy a Z-71 and then lift it and put totally different shocks and skid plates on! i swear they just like the sticker in the back, i mean it does look better than the 4x4 one. but a $1500 sticker!!come on. ive used all my chevy trucks plenty off road, and they have been great. now , maybe if i wasnt planning on lifting mine i would go for it. if you wanna buy a real off road truck, the only way to go is a 3/4 ton. stronger rear end , tranny, suspension, etc... just the thoughts of a 20 year old that has an 86' 3/4 ton, had a 90' ext. cab 3/4 ton and now got a 2000 3/4 ton on the way!!! ha ha ha. all four wheel drive too.
by the way, no charity here. ive worked since i was 12 and bought every truck with my own money. hahahah no spoiled rich kid here. why does being smart always make me look bad? lol. let me clarify what the Z-71 comes with. different shocks, not bilstien anymore:( ,stabilizer bars, "bump stops" whooeee. and a really cool sticker. i dont think the air filter is that special because i got my high capacity air cleaner free with my order, i think it comes with the 3/4 ton package.
People here have mentioned calling the GM 800 number about problems. What is the number and what type of things can they answer? Is it only for complaints or can they give info like details on options etc.?
I have a dash rattle coming from the passenger side of my 99 ext.cab4x4 . The dealer said that a lot of them do it and that chevy has no fix as yet.The dealer had my windshield sealed by a glass company and that took care of some noise but not the dash rattle.Dose anyone have any info. that could help find that nasty noise? Thanks Rick
First time owner of a GM product and I have a 1999 2WD Chevy Silverado LS 1500. Have 7500 miles on it and have had no major problems with it so far. Got something in the mail yesterday about the GM Protection Plan for my truck. Top of the line coverage covers everything even wear and tear on the parts that need to be replaced. Is it worth it to get this protection plan? Costs $1130 for 5 years/75K.
Let's see, you get 3yrs/36,000 miles with your truck. And for a mear $1130 you can get and additional 2yrs/39,000 miles of warranty.
Extended warranties, undercoating, paint sealant, and Scotchgard and the biggest money makers for car dealers. Most failures occur early in the life of the vehicle or very late in the life. The period covered by the extended warranty is the most reliable part of the vehicles life.
I would agree that the extended warranties are not the most productive use of your $$$$$
The overwhelming majority of significant problems occur during the warranty coverage period - in this case 3 yr / 36K miles. In addition, you have the lemon law to back you up for major problems that would reoccur.
For my $$$$ I would use a small portion of that amount to lower the deductibles on my auto insurance policy (to cover minor fender bender problems) and use the balance to add after market upgrades to the vehicle.
Good Luck with the truck - I'm am awaiting the arrival of my new 00 Silverado 1/2 LS 4x4 - sometime in November!
thanks for clearing up the price of the Z71 that $1500 is ridiculous. The package is only $345. AND DONT EVEN TRY TO SAY ADD THE 4x4 because even if your gonna get the z85 u will get 4x4 so dont even add that CHECK UR MATH SKILLS DUDE
Any word on the timing & cost of the 4th door option listed as available for the 2000 silverados? Dealers are currently telling me it not yet available on 2000 models.
At the risk of offending my fellow Chevy owners, I must say your application calls for the biggest baddest truck you can find. Right now that's a 1-ton Ford Power Stroke Diesel, maybe a dually! When GM comes out with its new 1-ton with diesel engine maybe the advice will be different.
can anyone tell me about the gas tank settlement. $1000 toward the purchase of a new GM product. All you need to qualify is to be an owner of a GM pickup with a side mount gas tank as of July of 1996. Any info...?
You may even be bumping up into F450 or F550 land. Take a look at Trailer Life magazine for adds by companies that finish those HD chassis specifically for pulling 5th wheels. From the rear window forward it's the same as the lighter SD models.
On the way back, I actually got 21.28 miles per gallon in my '99 LT (5.3 2wd 3.73 gears). Overall trip mileage for both ways (including a SMALL bit of local driving and a few high-speed passes) was 18.95. AC was on most of the way.
ok ok, so i was buzzing a little the other night when i quoted the $1500 Z-71 price. i threw that number out off the top of my spinning head. i think my math skills are still up to par the last time i checked, but thanks Ryanbab. my point was, if its only $345, then buy it! its probably the best package for a half ton.thats all. thanks.
Locking Diff: You can order the LD with either the 3.73 or 4.10
4th Door: This will be an option on '00 models, however the latest update I recieved was production on the 4th door will not begin until after the 1st of the new year, production will be very limited, and they will not begin taking orders for this option until EOM Nov'99. Option Number E24, not sure of the price.
Don't be surprised if you order it in November..The project gets pushed off for a few months...you hold out..and it gets cancelled..and you end up ordering a 2001. If you really want one this year....and it has to be a 4 door...Good luck.
I recently heard of structural problems with 4th door option...hard to believe since it's a duplicate of passenger side. Yeah, making the 4th door an OPTION is a "GOTCHA" by Chevrolet...we have to pay for something now available on Fords and Dodges. Did not know it would be a limited production, but I did hear it wasn't available until year 2000 sometime. Does anyone know if it's possible to get an extended cab LS Silverado with a V8 AND a 6.5 foot truck bed??? The 8 foot bed makes this thing too long.
Absolutely - ordered my '00 LS 1500 Ext Cab / Short Bed with the 5.3L V8 on August 16th. As a matter of fact I have seen 3 of them on the lot at a local dealer.

While on the topic, I've seen references to the "Chevy Rules!" message -- how do you trigger this?
AIRAID induction adds 10hp and 20lbs/ft torque at the rear wheels
