I have yet so see a new silverado in LS or LT that is NOT a 6.5 foot bed with an extended cab.

Brother in law just bought a Dodge 2WD ext. cab Diesel..with the 8 foot bed...YUKK!

    Same color as mine..black..with Grey...

Told him he should have got the Chevy!

..he didn't like to hear that...

I am new to this but I will tell you I have on order a Sierra, ext cab, 4.8, automatic, 2wd and 3.42 locking rear. When I ordered the truck mgr showed me the book on availability. It seems silly but this is what I found out. Ext cab locking rear NOT available in 3.73 rear but IS available in 3.42. In Reg cab It was other way around. This is on GMC. I do not know about Chevy. I ordered my truck the end of July and I was told the other day my tuck should show up the 3rd week of Sept. Can't wait!
  • wcelbewcelbe Member Posts: 10
Sorry, I forgot to mention it is the short bed truck. Again may be different for long bed. I know this is the truck that everyone says has problems with but I will test drive and we will see.

I have a 99 Silverado LT Z71 with the Firestone AT 265 tires. I am thinking that when these tires wear out, I will replace them with 285s. Any problems with doing that? How much additional height will that give the truck? I have a small garage, and I can't afford for it to get too much higher than it already is, although I wouldn't mind a couple inches more.
  • shamptonshampton Member Posts: 53
Regarding replacing your 265's with 285's when the time arrives - you may run into some problems with this switch regarding your speedometer readings (also setting cruise at a certain speed may not yield the correct speed you desire), and you may notice braking issues and/or mileage drops. I would check directly with the dealer before doing so - as the inside garage height may be the least of your issues to consider.

    Good Luck!

order mine [same truck in a chevy] first week of july and still waiting. was told originally 8-10 weeks, now pushing 12-14 almost bought one off the lot inbetween, cant stand the long wait.370 rear could be holding my order up.[non locker]have to beg for info from dealer, never calls back.your combo is not a problem truck but acually a reliable one.4800 is being proved more reliable then 5300 from what i here.good luck keep us posted.

I work in a lumber yard on the weekend (its a job while im in school) and believe me chevy trucks hold much more ( bricks, cement, shingles, wood, any thing u can think of) especially the z71 package or a 4x4. once we tried to put a pallet of shingles (48 bundles) on a guys dodge ram and and you wouldnt believe how much it sagged. This is how i would rank the 3 trucks on hauling it would have to be chevy then ford followed in a distant third dodge. I think the chevy 1500 (4x4 models) hold about the same as a f250 (this is from first hand every day expierence.) SO if u need a truck to haul building materials id go with chevy unless you want a ford to do that hard work and let your chevy sit around and look pretty.

    Hey,
I just test drove a 2000 x-cab Z71 (shortbed) with 3.73 rearend. This is the exact same configuration as my '98, and I can honestly say that the 5.3L definitely has more high-end power.
I still like the 5.7L for it's low-end torque though (e.g. going up hills without having to shift down, and better acceleration without having to mash the pedal). The 5.3L is definitely lacking in that area, comparatively. The latest edition of "Truck Trends" also has that same criticism. I'm not sure it matters, though, because at the high-end, there is no shortage of power (and I'm at 5600 ft elevation). Overall, I was very impressed. I can only imagine what it would be like at or around sea level.
I've not driven a Ford (lately), but according to the Truck Trends article, the F150's numbers definitely looked the best (by far) and they said it was the fastest (with the new Tundra coming in second). In fact, the Chevy may have only beaten the Dodge because the Dodge was yet to be broken in (had only 60 miles on it). In short, GM definitely made an improvement in their engine line, but they are still far behind in the performance race.
    keep on truckin'

Truck trend says what ever is popular this week or this minute! Just a couple issues ago they where saying the chevy was the best thing since sliced bread. Next month the Ford will be the [non-permissible content removed], oops excuse me, I really don't want to sound testy but I don't give a rats [non-permissible content removed] about Toyota Tundra, We are talking apple pies and Bow ties here!!!! Whew I just had to say that. On a chevy note, $345 may be a reasonable price for the Z71 package, who actually takes a thirty thou plus truck off road other than farmers, ranchers, constuction guys ect, ect, you get my point, lots off Z71s on the road feeling every crack in the concrete. Unless you truely have use for it, why spend the money. Oh yea that limited slip will help me get the groceries home. I'm sorry I got on a rant, but somebody has to stir the pot! Capt

Can anyone tell me why the 4.8 5-spd has a redline, yet the 4.8 and 5.3 automatics don't? Are the clutch assembly/manual transmission internals structurally unstable at or around 6,000 RPM's?

For those of you who have automatics, (4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 liter owners) when you put your foot to the floor from a dead stop, at what RPM does the transmission shift? How much do the shift points differ in Tow/Haul mode under full throttle?

I'm buying a Silverado sometime within the next year and still don't know exactly what I want yet.
Anyone know where to find all of the specifications on the engine and driveline components?

Now, to save for a down payment...

A while back there was a run of messages on the "hours" display capability of the '99s. Everyone was calculating the average speed based on the miles and hours shown. It's my understanding (from using many tractors) that hours are based on a single RPM measurement. i.e. 1650 RPM on the old ford tractor my grandfather owned. So, if you ran the engine for 4 hours at 3300 rpm the hours would accumulate 8 hours. Or 4 hours at 825 RPM you would only rack up 2 hours. I think that's why most people were only seeing about 22 miles/hour on their calculation. The hours are only at a specific rpm and not actually clock based. I'm not sure if this is totally correct. But, it's the only way I've ever seen engine hours counted.
  • nargnarg Member Posts: 112
Some car magazine (forget which one) did a compairison between the new Ford Super Duty and a plain old Chevy 2500. The Chevy blew the doors off the Super Duty. While both rated the same load and pulling, the Chevy was a much better ride and comfort, had better engine choices, better milage, and I think it even had more power. They used to say "buy a Ford to do the work, and a Chevy to look good". Looks like that old saying is no longer correct. Chevy does better all around. My only explaination for the Fords selling more is the price of the Fords tend to be a little lower. Hmmm, I guess you really get what you pay for :) But, then again, does that "Ford sells more that Chevy" count both Chevy + GMC????? Methinks GM sells more trucks, period.
  • powerisfunpowerisfun Member Posts: 358
Actually, even if you add Chevy + GMC sales, Ford
still outsells them. Fords are good trucks. Chevy/GMCs are also good trucks. The reason Ford
outsells Chevy is just as you cited: price. The equivalently equipped Ford is on the order of $1000 less than a GM (sometimes more than a $1000 less). Plus for less money, they get more horsepower and more torque (according to the MEASUREMENTS in Truck Trend). Even if they would now raise their price to the same levels, they would still outsell GM just because they've gained customer loyalty.
I've always preferred GM, but marketing-wise, they are a bunch of knuckle-heads. When will they get tired of that "Like a Rock" slogan, for example? It was good for about 6 months tops, and they've dragged it out for close to 20 years now. I'm sure Ford guys watch that commercial and reply, "Yeah, and just as fast as one" or some silly [non-permissible content removed] like that. We should all forget about brand loyalty and be happy that ALL the American trucks are good vehicles, probably the best vehicles on the road.

Just picked up my new 99 1500 LS 4x4 Z-71 with 5.3 in Summit White with Medium Grey interior. Picked it up for $200 over invoice and then picked up a $500 rebate on top of that. Dealer said another $500 may be added and would keep me available for that for 7 days. Had a Rhino Liner put in back and let me say I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!

I'll come back at 15000 miles and tell ya more.

    And now...

Power Door Locks; Yes, my 99 has those locks that automatically lock when the truck reaches 15 mph. I like this option, I just wish they would unlock when I turn off the key. I saw a post about this on the list that said the 00s can be programmed by the customer four different ways. Can someone scan me this and I will try it out on my 99? Or maybe just post the directions onto the list. Or does someone know if you cannot do this on the 99s? (I bet you can).

Z-71 package; It is a less than $300 option if you look at invoice. The ride on mine is great. Nice and stiff, but it does not throw you around. Go take a trip through the pasture in my old 1/2 ton 2wd and hang on! The 4WD Z-71 is comfortable even on the rough city streets. $200 plus for the bigger shocks, air cleaner, and skid plates? Yeah, if I'm buying a 4x4 I'll make that investment. I have no idea what jounce bumpers are, (can someone explain that), and I don't like the decal. Bring back the old decals!

Accessories; Has anyone ordered the factory mud flaps for their truck? I really like them and was wondering about the price and satisfaction on them. Ditto for truck steps. My wife says she has to have them, so I am looking for some. No nerf bars, (yuk!), no running boards, just some good ole stainless or aluminum steps.

Ford #1?; I would have to see somewhere in writing that Ford sells more pickups than GMC and Chevy combined. Every chart I have seen in newspapers showed Chevy #2 and GMC #3 and combining both outsold Ford. I am trying to look some of that info up; I'll post it or eat some crow (Caw! Caw!) One thing that I cannot prove but I think is true is that Ford gets the benefit of some huge fleet sales. I know of several companies that have Ford only truck fleets.

Have a great Labor Day weekend,

    Matthew

I'll get ya the 4 options soon. I got my own Labor day party going on and can't comprehend too much right now..(wonder why??)

I just did my initial oil change at 988 miles. Questions:

Not fully understanding the algorithm the computer uses, do I need to "reset" something so the computer knows I changed my oil?

    Thanks

    >Can anyone tell me why the 4.8 5-spd has a
redline, yet the 4.8 and 5.3 automatics don't?<

The engine with the automatics has no redline. We can rev as high as we want and never have a problem.

Seriously, I never noticed the lack of one on mine, but most likely it has to do with the computer controlled automatic never allowing the engine to rev past whatever redline the engine has.

I'll have to see where mine shifts at WOT, but it seems to be somewhere near 6000 rpm.

The Silverado trucks are limited by the stock computer programming to 5,600 rpm and then it cuts the fuel pump off. The only way around that is aftermarket programming. I can't think of one smart reason in doing that though. Youre taking a chance of bending a rod or something the closer to 6 grand you get. Hypertech only allows up to 6,200 rpm but I think it would be stupid to reprogram that option from stock and I have the Hypertech PPIII.

One gains nothing past the peak torque and hp curves anyway, which are both under the stock rpm limit.

    Take care.

Look it up in your manual, but it goes like this.

Turn key to run (don't start), immediately pump gas pedal completly 3 times in the first 5 sec.

The oil change light will flash 4 to 5 times. You have to be patient and wait for the Bat light to go out.

This is the only way your truck knows to reset the oil change counter.
  • f220swiftf220swift Member Posts: 103
One of my friends actually believes that the oil light will tell him the viscosity rating of his oil(or when to change it). Ha! Ha! I aint saying nottin.

I have a 1999 Silverado LS w/power windows and power locks. The power locks engage after reaching 15 miles per hour. The manual says this will occur. However, the power locks do not open after the vehicle is placed in park and the ignition turned off. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • dallas75dallas75 Member Posts: 72
Jon34, the locks are functioning correctly for a 99. You have to unlock with the switch.
Tim, enjoyed all of your posts. I will tip back a cold one in your honor! By the way, which bed liner did you end up with? Have a good one!

From comments on this board I understand the 99 annoying door locks can be reprogrammed by the dealer. The 2k models can be set by the customer.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
narg, I suspect the old tractor was limited to a RPM based clock due to the mechanical nature of the clock. With the electronics in the truck today counting real hours is trival. I think the general public would be quite confused with the RPM clock.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Just found this site at another topic, they sell some solution for the automatic locks.

Does anyone know what brand of soft tonneao GM is selling as a factory or dealer installed option? Also are there any large rubber mud flaps avail for silverado, I think the molded ones suck.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
Any chance that the door locks are the same on 2000 as 1999, but they now tell us how to program them ourselves? In other words, will the proceedure for the 2000 work on a 1999? ... Can someone state what the proceedure is?

You can use a Hypertech programmer to re-program the PCM yourself. Or some say you can have the dealer do it.
  • somales1somales1 Member Posts: 22
GM offers both 245 and 265 size tires. Does the factory calibrate the speedo for what ever size tires is on each truck? I ordered my truck with the stock 245's with the intention of buying 265 michelin's later. Will I need to recalibrate my speedo?

    1.)Yes.
    2.)Maybe.

This past weekend I saw a Summit White Silverado with the Pewter, two tone option, along the lower part of the vehicle.

Does anyone know if it is available in Summit White with Gold along the lower part of the truck?

My salesman just said, "Gee, I don't have a clue." Way to earn my business buddy! He was also unaware of the horsepower increases, 4th door option, etc.

    Your help appreciated.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Ive heard so much funny stuff. My uncle is a dealer and next summer gonna be buying one and i was gonna give him $26500 cash but he told me that i would have to get less options. I know i can get a real good deal and my own uncle is trying to bs me around. My parents just bought a 2000 blazer they first went to him to look for one and he did absolutely nothing so we got it elsewhere. I dont know how these people got their jobs its ridiculus but the Z71 2wd comment was hilarious im still rollin.
  • jose13jose13 Member Posts: 11
Not dealing with the Silverado in particular, but a year ago my friend was in the market for a new sports car. Every dealer he went to, he knew more about options/std./performance for a given car than the salesmen. Not just Chevy either, he knew more about the Prelude than the Honda guy, more about the Camaro than the Chevy guy, etc, etc. Just found it funny you guys have had the same experience with truck salespeople.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Just the basic options are all they know. Overall all that really matters for most people is making sure they know how much it will cost a month and what the current deals and rebates are. My salesman admitted that with forums like this...we know things before GM tells them.
  • jose13jose13 Member Posts: 11
Since I posted my previous thing about salesmen, I might as well talk about why I"m in this message thread. I currently have a '99 (got it June 98) Tahoe, 2yr lease which expires this upcoming yr (I know I know, 10 months still, but I always begin to check possibilities early) The vehicle I would prefer would be a Corvette, however, the insurance is too high for the next 2 yrs. So I"ll be patient and wait for a couple more years :)

Well, with the vette out, it leaves me 2 options that I"m considering, a Camaro, a '00/'01 Impala LS (with spoiler) or a '00/'01 Silverado (I"m sure '01 will be out when my lease is over, worse case I"ll try to extend it, if I can), I"m not married, have no kids, nor tow a boat, so in truth I don't "need" any of the 2 vehicles (more in truth I don't need a Tahoe either, but damn I love it) so the decision will be based on looks (personal tastes), fun to drive, reliability (but not a Honda..I did say fun to drive :) ,and future usage (buying a house in a few yrs, unless I get the 'vette first ;) and ride quality. I would prefer Chevy since I usually get good deals where my mom works.

My questions are : has the Silverado been reliable so far? my Tahoe has been, even though I am bad with scheduled maintenances (21K miles and only about 3 oil changes). What advantages (aside from more space) are there to the pickup truck than the car. any things current owners that you would have/have not gotten , or changes you would have preferred. Also, any things you like/dislike about them. I still have time to choose, so I am in no hurry. Thanks in advance
  • jose13jose13 Member Posts: 11
2nd paragraph....it leaves me 3 options, not 2 :) sorry, rewrote part of 2nd paragraph but that miscount went unnoticed :)
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
hmm, let's see... A sports car, a sedan, or a truck. You've about covered the field! Since you have a truck now, go for the Camaro.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
The only place I found non-ignorant salesmen was at a truck-only dealership. Unfortunately it was Ford! So I did my own research and bought a Chevy without asking many questions.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
A Corvette or an Impala??....what Kinda combo is that?

00 Is supposed to be the last year for F-Body. (Camaro and Trans Am)
  • mfreemanmfreeman Member Posts: 37
I would buy the truck, and here is why. I too wanted to buy a Corvette, but they still want too much for it (dealers in my area still want more then MSRP!), so I bought a nice truck. When I finally buy my corvette, I want a convertible which will leave little room for groceries, my bikes, and everything else I could presently stuff in the back of my Trans Am. With a truck I can carry anything I want, go camping, pull the sail boat that I'm in the process of building, etc. Then when I get the corvette several years from now, I will keep the truck as a do everything vehicle and have the vette for a "lets see what this car will do" vehicle.

That's my plan. Note: if the new Yukons were out this year, I might have bought one of those, but my GM employee discount vanishes on Dec 18th. (I now build weapons of mass destruction for Raytheon since GM sold a chunk of it's Hughes division to them.)

I should just scan this...but here goes. This is the 2000 Supplement for the Locks. Don't know if it works on a 99??

    To enter Programming Mode:

    1. With Ignition OFF...Pull back on turn signal lever all the way toward you and HOLD it while you perform the next step.

    2. Turn your Key to ON and OFF Twice. With the Key in the OFF posistion..release the turn signal lever. Once you do this..you will hear the lock switch lock and unlock.

    3. You are now ready to program one of the 4. You have 10 seconds to begin programming. If you take longer...the locks will lock and unlock...indicating you have left the program mode. You can exit programming any time by turning the key ON.

    Options:

    1. All doors lock/Only the Drivers Unlocks:

Press the lock side of the power lock switch on the door panel once...and unlock once.

    2. All doors Lock/All doors Unlock:

    Press Lock Once...Unlock twice

    3. All Doors Lock/No doors Unlock:

    Press Lock Once...Unlock 3 times

    4. No doors Lock/No doors Unlock

Press the lock side twice...(this turns off the auto.door locks.)

    Hope this Helps.

Lemme know what happens...as I have not tryed this yet...and will not try...as I am happy with the factory setting.

    Good Luck

Has anyone received a price to get the fourth door on an extended cab for the Silverado LS? I can't find the price anywhere. What's the comparison between the 4.8 and the 5.3? Is it worth extra bucks for 5.3?

If you are looking to purchase a new Silverado (or any other GM product), Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg Idaho sells them at $218 over dealer invoice (for Boeing employees it's $282 below dealer invoice). They will typically have to order your new vehicle; unless somebody ordered one, it came in, and the person decided not to buy it. Then they will sell it to you straight off of the lot.

You can fly into the Spokane airport, a free shuttle will pick you up and take you to Dave Smith Motors (about a 90 minute ride), and then you can drive your new vehicle home from there.

    Dave Smith Motors web site.......
    http://www.usautosales.com/

They also sell Dodge and Chrysler products too, but you'd better be prepared to open up you wallet a lot once the warranty ends.

Sorry future Ford owners, no Fords sold there. When Dave Smith first started, GM and Dodge said yes while Ford said "no thanks". Once Ford saw how many vehicles Dave Smith was selling, they approached Dave Smith Motors about selling Fords there, Dave Smith Motors said..."no thanks".

    Hurray for the little guy!!!

Does anybody know what the industry equivalent tint is for the deep tinted glass option (code AJ1)? Is it equivalent to 10%, 20%, 30%, etc.?

I'm not sure if I should order my new Silverado LS with this option, or wait and do an after-market professional window tint installation if the AJ1 is not dark enough.
