    For every upgrade in Octane level 89, 91 you can add an additional $.10 per gallon. Why are they fixated on this $.10 per gallon more? It used to be just a few pennies more for the upgraded octane.

    When was that? I've lived in a lot of places over the last 20 years, including CA. I can't recall the price differential between grades ever being just a few pennies. In fact if in CA the price difference between grades is only 10 cents that is probably a historic low on a percentage basis. If the price of 87 Octane is $3.20 and the price for 91 Octane is $3.40 that's only 6 percent more. I'd be surprised if it's ever been lower than that.

    You need to move to sunny San Diego. Gas prices are that high, but who cares? It is 75 and the sun shining all winter long. You do not have high heating bills in the winter. And if you are not wasteful you will not have high bills for AC in the summer. Next best thing to living in Hawaii.

    On a percentage basis 91 octane is the lowest it has ever been. I am surprised that the gap has not widened a lot more. Only the rich drive vehicles that require Premium, so why not gouge em? Wait, our old LS400 uses premium, forget that last comment.

    The gas prices are still the same at Mt. Arlington Exxon... been almost 3 weeks now. The diesel price went up a painful 15 cents, though.

    Filled today at Costco. Most stations now at $3.05 for unleaded regular. Diesel holding in the $3.50 range. The mountains all around me are white with snow. Now may be a good time to sell the Sequoia. Gas headed down and snow all around... Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells.... :)

    Filled up today at the grocery for $3.06 for regular. Most places are $3.09.

    We did a quick road trip to Reno last Friday/Saturday and forgot to get gas before the 100 mile high desert stretch without services, so had to buy some regular on the NV/OR state line for around $3.55 Diesel there was $3.99.

    last nite I filled up my Intrepid, and 87 octane was down to $3.039. It had been running as high as $3.059-3.099. I've been driving so little lately though, that the last time the car was filled up was back on November 5! It went a whopping ~305 miles in that time, for an average of about 21.3 mpg in mostly local, very short-trip driving.

    Sounds like Winnemucca.

    McDermitt - Winnemucca has one friendly station on Highway 95 on the edge of town that's $3.09. All the stations off the I-80 exits in town are about $3.20 ish. Well, the people at McDermitt are real friendly too, just a bit pricey.

    We decided to take the Subaru at the last minute due to the snowy forecast since the tires on it are lots better in the wet than the minivan. And the gauge read full, but the tank really wasn't all that full when we left town.

    Got company, so took a day road trip to the center of population of Idaho in Stanley, over in the Sawtooths. It's often the coldest spot in the lower 48 states, and is about 60 miles from Sun Valley and 125 miles from Boise. I topped the Subaru up for grins:

    Regular $3.75.9

    Premium $3.95.9

    Ethanol is not fuel efficient, it does not get the mpg that gasoline does and it costs more to produce.

    It is simply another scam by the left to say that we are being earth friendly and to give our country a false sense of security that we are developing a new fuel source.

    This is fine for limited use like auto racing but on a large scale it will never replace oil. We have had 20+ years to develop a new fuel source, drill for oil in our own country, build new refineries or allow more nuclear energy plants. Our Government has procrastinated and done nothing. It is now 35 years since a permit has been granted for a new nuclear power plant and the left will most likely shoot it down.

    We don't want to drill for oil on our own turf yet no one has come up with a viable alternative to oil..............

    Now that my ranting is done, the other reason why you seem to be getting less mileage is the grade of the fuel you are using. A lower octane than your engine likes to run on, though you pay more for Plus than Regular, regular will use more per gallons per mile to run your engine unless it is a lawn mower.

    If that is not the problem then the fuel you are using is inferior to a quality fuel. BJ's, Walmart and others use a fuel that does not go through all the processes that a Sunoco or Mobil does which leaves impurities and thus burns faster.

    Cheaper is not always better.

    Actually it's a scam by the right - all those red state farmers and ADM and Cargill lobbying heavily for restrictions on importing Brazilian ethanol and getting tax subsidies for building new ethanol refineries. Meanwhile corn prices are going through the roof making all those welfare farmers even richer. And I sure there's a few other ways of spinning this argument. :shades:

    Have you heard aboout Top Tier gas. The following manufactures recomended to use it: Toyota, BMW, VW, GM. I read a lot people had problems with fuel gauge, MPG and car running rough, because they used none Top Tier gas. Is it B. S.?

    We have gone under that magic $3 per gallon here in San Diego for the first time in 2 months. As an average we are about 50 cents per gallon higher this year than last.

    Chevron used to advertise that the manufacturers chose their gas when doing the required EPA mileage test to maximize results.

    I often buy Chevron for convenience but if I'm near the cheap pumps at the grocery, I'll buy that. It runs about 3 cents cheaper than the brand name stuff.

    Regular bumped to $3.11 here yesterday.

    Was able to fuel up this morning for $2.949 for 87 octane. Yesterday petrol at the usual place was $2.999 so a 5 cent/gallon discount helps, at least psychologically. Everyone else seems to be running in the $2.959 to $3.039 range for 87 octane, Chicago being higher.

    Hopefully this will keep me out of the re-fueling stations until at least after Christmas, with maybe a fill-up between that and New Years. Canceling my travel plans again this year really helped over Thanksgiving and now Christmas.

    The blip up to $3.11 was short-lived. Now the norm here in Boise seems to be:

    $3.07 regular
    $3.19 midgrade
    $3.29 premium
    $3.49 diesel

    have ticked up approx 20 cents from last Friday's (12/28) 20 cent uptick. At work the average petrol prices are now:

    $3.259 for 87 (by work; near home the price is $3.359)
    $3.399 for 89 (10 cents higher near home)
    $3.499 for 91 (10 cents higher near home)

    Before this latest uptick I found fuel for $2.999 on 12/28 near home where other stations were at $3.129 ~ $3.159 range for 87 octane.

    Maybe this isn't for this board but my first question is are these prices based on the January delivery prices from last month's trading or from yesterday's & today's $100+ trading, which is supposed to be for February oil futures? And if petrol supplies are increasing (as well as NG), while demand has decreased and continues to do so, why are petrol prices increasing? :confuse:

    At this rate we'll be back to $4 before spring...

    Interesting - they are falling here in Boise. I filled up last night for $2.99 at the Fred Meyer store. The regular service stations are running $3.05 to $3.09 for regular, and diesel is down to $3.39 most places.

    Yes, have read and listened to the news reports and came across articles online stating that demand has slowed, as usual for the winter months. I'm not stating that demand all but stopped by it has gone down, based on N.A., since the warm weather driving season. (I say warm weather since the normal "summer" driving season this year was actually from spring to winter). The inventory levels have decreased due to sell offs for oil but demand has dropped, again based on N.A. But China and other developing areas are coming on like gang-busters, but all of this is for another topic / forum.

    Back to petrol prices. I filled up for $3.179 for 87 octane this morning, everyone else holding steady at $3.259 or $3.359. Wasn't in the city this weekend so unsure if prices ticked up or not.

    Gas prices look bout $2.88 for a nominal price.
    Marathon at a competitive station is $2.73

    Oil prices today are under 90. The economy is slowing or has already slowed. The markets haven't had a resilience bounce with the recent drops meaning they may go down more.

    AND reserves of oil/petroleum jumped in the week's or month's report. They usually use lower reserves and higher crude prices to give excuses for raising the gasoline in general. Now we'll see how they lower the price.

    I'm betting for the Thursday bounce we usually get with pricees then dropping slowing from Saturday into next week.

    That .25 differential between regular and midgrade I saw the other day must have been an anomaly.

    It has been a long high priced winter season. We are now seeing $2.89 for regular.

    Last year by November we were paying $2.25 and did not head back up till March. Cheapest diesel I have seen is $3.15 for BP/ARCO ULSD.

    I am amazed that it is not higher with $90 per barrel oil.

    Gary, the CA average for reg unl as of yesterday was $3.299, so anyone charging $2.899 is 40 cents under the state average. That's a good price.

    Here in Pa-HOE-Nix the best avail price is $2.769 with the average price at $2.889

    The 50 lowest priced stations in San Diego are below $2.98 per gallon. As I have pointed out in the past. We have stations across the street from each other with as much as a 50 cent difference. Those high priced stations also add 10 cents per gallon for using a CC. They still have loyal customers. Go figure.

    Many are lower today than yesterday, C'mon 2 buck gas :)

    Well, with oil still $80+ a barrel, gas can never get down to $2 for a USA average price.

    I think I just had my first $60+ fuel bill yesterday. It was partly my fault, though. I let my '79 5th Ave get to the point that the low fuel light came on. Took 19.1 gallons to fill it up, at $3.259 per gallon for hi test, which it tends to prefer.

    $2.99/gal for 87 no-lead. I held it to my $20 maximum fill-up rule, too. Even if I'm on a 1,000 mile road trip I refuse to give any ghastly station along the route any more than $20 of our money at any one time. It's a rule I feel particularly proud of.

    ASAP I'm off of this futures-trader hoot-en-nany and on to EV's. As Mitsubishi continues working on competent EV's I'll enjoy my ICE Lancer GTS for 2008 to the hilt.

    87 is down to $2.84 or $2.85 at the lowest places. Thus far, (in the last couple of years of the great run-up), it's never gone above $2.99. I guess I should be thankful.

    That price happens to the highest I ever paid, away from home for 87, at a no-name place in Truxton, AZ on historic Route 66 last spring (the long stretch that loops well away from I-40).

    We were running low on fuel, and this was a "desperation" stop. We only purchased $10 worth, enough to get us to Kingman and civilization!
