On a lighter note; Does any one have any recommendations for washing an obsidian black Mercedes. I do not want to go through the old fashioned brush system but have heard that touchless may also cause streaks.... Should I always get a detailer to do it??
I was told that I needed a cabin filter for my 1999 mercedes benz e320. Could anyone tell exactly where it go. some instructions came with it but they are not clear.
Looks like there are two filters...a charcoal cabin "pollen" filter and a regular dust filter
Pollen filter
1 Remove right cover below instrument panel 2 Move locking slide in direction of arrow and remove cover 3 Withdraw activated charcoal filter downwards
NOTE: Activated charcoal filte must not be cleaned but should always be replaced.
Dust Filter
1. Remove glove compartment. (undo light connector wire, undo two plugs, undo 6 screws, remove entire cover/box from instrument panel. 2. Push holding clips in direction of arrow and then remove cover 3. Pull out, push in dust filter 4 Install in the reverse order.
Since the mast broke in our local Mike's carwash, they paid for it. It cost $150 from the MB dealer. It is a rip off as MB should just have the gasket and mast instead of the entire cover as a kit. It is the body colored cover/mast and the base gasket. I googled it and found a place on E-bay that sold the base gasket and the mast for $32 free shipping. I bought the piece while not knowing what Mike's carwash would do.
Two days before the kit showed up, I was told to go to the dealer and pick up the piece. I felt bad that they paid $150 for this. If I knew the replacement piece existed for $32, I would have paid for it and would not have bothered to complaint about it.
I have a 1997 E320 and I am having the same problem, can u tell me what your solution was, I called the MB dealer and they sent someone out, they checked battery and stated that it was prob the key..they advised us to try another key, however we bought the car used and we do not have a spare key.. Please tell me what your solution is...other wise we will have to buy another key just to see if that works, if it doesn't then it more money out to send it to the dealer...please assist..
Hello good fellows, I am retired and my wish was to own a Mercedes Benz one day. So, I invest $5900.00 on a 2000 E320 with 186,645 miles with NO MALFUNCTION except for a LIGHT MALFUNCTION SOME TIME. But I did take a warranty for the Motor and the Transmission for 3 years. I will not be driving the car all the times because I own a 2000 Nissan Maxima with 89500 miles. Will you please tell me how many miles I have left on this car. A friend of mine has a Honda Accord that run 278000+ miles. So give me your advice. Thanks
I have 170,000 on my 200 E320. It runs fine. I'm the original owner and it has been mostly dealer serviced since new. Good luck with yours. If you don't know the maintenance history of the car you are at a disadvantage. Get the car to a dealer or knowlegable independent for a thorough check out. There are some good tips on what to look for and the proper care and feeding of your car at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/. How did you get a warranty on a car with that mileage???
Congrats and welcome to the club of MB owners.... MB is a great car in any age and you will like it. Here you can get lots of useful info : http://www.mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w211-20/
Have been driving MB's for almost 40 yrs. Strongly recommend that you join the MBCA. MB Club of America. You will get all the info that you need from fellow members.
I own a 2000 e320 and the oil sensor came on saying it was low. I filled it to just below the max line on the stick and now it says to redue oil level....should I be concerned or remove some oil.
50084 miles and needs a cam sensor- $5k for a damn sensor, o' :lemon: yea factory warranty went out at 50K miles and Mercedes USA does not want any part of this!
i'm surprised that a little shmoozing would not result in near-total coverage for such a major engine failure 84 miles beyond warranty! It sure sounds like a brutal/annoying situation, but probalby not a surprise, given that MB cars are known to be relatively unreliable and to have considerable maintenance-costs.
I bought 2009 E350 and has 3K miles on it. When my wife was driving vehicle, suddenly wheel rim burst and lost air. I checked tire and was not damaged from outside or didn't see any stress where rim was damaged.
I believe that this is bad quality of AMG wheel but Dealers are not ready to accept.
Few questions: 1) Why MB always ask you to buy wheel and tire warranty for AMG wheels? 2) I have seen several post where people has described about the chip, crack in the wheel. 3) They always denies for warranty with outside force (including pot holes). How many pot holes in this country on the road and have you face any rim damage by pot holes on another vehicle?
I am IT person and this is simple logic that AMG low profile wheel are not designed properly to handle impact of small outside force.
We are paying high for vehicle with priority of safety for family members. But if this happens while you drive, your family could get hurt.
I have filed complain in NHTSA. I wanted to hear about your opinion or if you have faced this kind of issue in the past.
It does appear to be impact-related, on the face of it, but that doesn't mean the rim wasn't defective to begin with.
I would contact Mercedes Benz of North America about this, and include the You Tube clip URL in your message; also, you can probably claim this damage on your comprehensive insurance policy, if your deductible isn't too high.
My personal opinion is that the dealer is wrong and this should be covered. AMG is owned by Mercedes Benz! It's not the same as a tire warranty.
When the tire is dismounted the damage/scuff may be visible.
If you are interested in maximizing spousal safety and spousal vehicle reliability, I recommend you consider to purchase non-performance wheels & touring tires for your E350, independent of whether Mercedes will warranty the AMG wheels. (If there is a smaller wheel / taller-tire configuration available from the factory, I recommend you look at that setup. )
I agree with your point about design: I understand that making wheels/tires more susceptible to impact damage is a mandatory/unavoidable tradeoff for performance wheels & tires.
I currently own a 2003 E230. I keep hearing noice in the wheel everytime I go over a bump. I've had this problem corrected several times, but it keeps reoccuring. Can anyone shed some light on what this reoccuring problem could be? And also, why does the SOS message keeps appearing? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
I'm unsure of the noise you're having but a few months ago my MB E500 AWD Sport had a noise each time I backed out of my garage and turned my wheels. I had it checked by both the MB dealer and an independent authorized MB mechanic. It turned out that the noise went away when I had the transfer case fluid drained and replaced with a high quality replacement lubicant. This may also be your problem. But, don't waste time as it is much less costly to drain and replace the TC fluid than replacing the Transfer Case!
"benzgirl": Depending on where you are located, find a recommended independent garage owner who is authorized/certified to diagnose and repair MB (and other European cars) to check out your wheel bearings if the noise is not coming from your transfer case .
If your MB has the SOS button, you may have inadvertantly pushed the button, but don't worry about it if you have not subscribed to the emergency call service. I think that is what the SOS message is for.
Have a E320 Bluetec 2008. How do you take off the air cleaner that runs across the top of the fuel filter. Need to remove to take out fuel filterFuel filter
I've got a 2010 E and the SOS button is part of the mbrace system-used to be Tele-Aid, similar to Onstar for GM cars. Mine never lights up. My understanding is that it you have an accident or something, you push the SOS button and mbrace tries to talk to you re: situation. If unable to, they call 911 for you. This is IF you have paid for mbrace-$285 per year. Let mine expire without renewing.
Hi I bought one 2009 E350 on 3/27/2010. Same your issue, after one month, got the tire pressure warning started to repeatedly go on even with 3 separate inspections stating that they could not find a nail on the tire. We finally took it in to full service of Mercedes Benz , they found a crack on rim of the interior of the front driver's side. I have took a picture.
They suggested to replace a new rim, will charge $950.
We just bought this certified car over one month, drive less than 1000 males and we drive very carefully, never hit anything, also how can got the crack inside?
Since I used to drive TOYOTA and LEXUS over ten years, never met the rim problem, I think it is the rim quality problem (who made it, and what material is it), we should ask Benz to recall it, if it does not want to become the second TOYOTA in USA.
There is a beautiful white 2003 E320 on this reputable used car dealer's lot near my house. It's been sitting there for about three months now, I assumed something was wrong with it since it hasn't sold, but I stopped to take a look during my walk the other day. The office was closed so I didn't drive it, but it looks almost brand new inside and out. The only indication that it isn't a more recent model is that the headlights are starting to glaze over, but I understand that's relatively easy to fix with toothpaste or something. As soon as I get a chance during business hours I plan on going to take a serious look and a test drive. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how beautiful this car looks, I wish I could post a picture.
Anyway, I wrote down the VIN# and pulled a CARFAX. The car seems to have been serviced regularly, but, although they didn't scare me away, a couple things caught my attention:
01/17/2003 2,863 Service Facility Engine/powertrain computer/module reprogrammed; Engine/powertrain computer/module replaced
11/25/2003 15,511 Service Facility Engine/powertrain computer/module reprogrammed; Body noise checked
01/18/2005 33,184 Service Facility Electrical system checked; Engine/powertrain computer/module reprogrammed; Anti-theft/keyless remote battery replaced; Battery/charging system checked
07/13/2009 90,740 Auto Auction Sold at auction in Pennsylvania, Listed as a dealer vehicle
Does any of this look unusual or should I be wary of seriously considering this car? It seems as though there have been some issues with the engine/powertrain computer/module, whatever that is. Is that common? Would it be expensive to repair since the car is obviously no longer under warranty?
Is there anything I should be looking for? I'd certainly have a Mercedes mechanic check it out before I bought it. I don't even know the asking price, but I've looked on Ebay and run a NADA report, and somewhere between $11,000 and $14,000 seems reasonable. Is there anything that typically malfunctions around 100,000 miles that would cost a lot to repair ($2000+)?
Sorry for all the questions, I've always wanted a Mercedes, but it seems the reliability isn't what it once was. I've had two BMWs, and I never had the first problem with either. One is 16 years old and runs almost a good as it did the day I bought it, but I have no idea what to expect from a Mercedes.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds to any of the questions, I'd really appreciate your thoughts...
It may be a problem car, maybe not. The 2003 E320 was the first year of the W211 E series. Many issues were reported with those early cars. Not sure about your example, but I'd be curious about the 5 1/2 year, 60,000 mile gap in the Carfax report. Ask your questions on mbworld.org and benzworld.org. They have a lot of information on the W211 and some very technically knowledgeable owners frequent those sites. It would be worth some time reviewing the W211 forums on those sites.
Assume nothing has been done on the car, anything can go wrong and everything will be expensive. Other than that, if you get it sorted out, expect a nice ride.
I have a 2000 E320, W210 with 170,000 miles, running fine. For a replacement I'd consider a W211, but only the later years, 2007-2009. In any event, don't do anything without a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified MBZ specialist. Good luck.
When I bought my 2001 E430 from a MB dealer in Mar 2006, the MB service adviser said..." If you can spend the money...go with 2005-up models. if you don't, stay with 96-2002 style.
Although 2003-2009 E-class are very beautiful and elegant cars, and one day I might consider a 06-07 black/taupe model, Pre- 2005 were terrible and unreliable to the point of destroying MB's reputation with its horrible brake by wire technology and other electronic and stereo glitches. Electronic glitches are expensive to fix on any car let alone Mercedes.
As nice looking as these 2003-2004 E-classes are...stay away from them. I KNOW they are very hard to skip since they look so good!!
My 2001 with 100K miles and four years of having it, has been exceptionally trouble free. Even with those models, you still need to pay attention to service/repair history.
I've taken my new 2010 E-class 3 times to the shop to fix an interior center column squeak. The last time the car was in the shop, they dissasembled the center column and installed felt. The squeak is still there, and it's sometimes weather sensitive. It sounds like plastic hitting plastic. Does anyone else have a similar issue? The shop doesn't seem to have a solution.
I doubt if anyone else will have this problem, as I don't know of any current Mercedes street cars with a "center column". Steering column, maybe? Center console, maybe?
One thing nice about the pre 2005's is they have real leather, the 2006-2010 have vinyl (Mercedes calls it MB-Tex,it was originally designed for taxi cabs in Europe I think). Not sure how the pull of selling a car like that with vinyl, good marketing I suspect. The E500's and the S' do have real leather thou.
The problem is there is now major cackling and static heard in the front passenger side speaker, even when the car is not on! It started out softly, but now it pops as if there is a loose wire. When I purchased the car (used MB 2003) from the dealer it did not do that until 30 days after the purchase! The car phone was partially dismantled and I'm wondering if that is the cause of the problem, or is the atennae or is this a big expensive electrical problem? Will it possibly drain the battery? The car is running fine, but the sound is driving me crazy! Please, anyone that can address this problem! Thanks, Chicago Girl
car has a moaning noise most noticeable at stop. dealer said power steering pump which was replaced with no change. anyone have same problem in convert or coupe.
I have the same problem as well as garage door remote on the mirror fails to remember the garage code. Dealer tells me that both are normal. Noise is there and nothing they could do about it. Garage door remote is a problem that they can't fix.
My buddy has a pristine 1998 E 320 and although he just loves his car, it's a car I wouldn't put up with.
A headlight bulb (xenon) replacement was 309.00 Both rear power windows started falling by themselves - 1000.00
Last month, he was driving the car and he heard a noise and suddentl;y lost his power steering. Towed to the dealer who informed him that his serpentine belt had broken.
Told him that the broken belt had caused a "lot" of damage - 4200.00!
Not a timing belt but a serpentine belt!
Now, can anyone here possibly tell me how that much damage could have happened?
Gee I wonder if his harmonic balancer or some other pulley came apart? Screws up lots of stuff as it flies into the radiator, fan, rips belts, bents pulleys, shreds hoses, spills coolant everywhere. Not nice.
Mighty fat bill he got. I'd certainly look it over with a fine tooth comb. Some dealers do like to pile it on.
You'll have to go to the dealer and maybe they can help you out here. Some online services claim to be able to provide the code, but I haven't personally tested their reliability or credibility.
Did you buy the car? My 2005 E320 w/45,000 miles is great. There are computer updates the dealer performs when you bring your car in for inspections or oil changes which may show on carfax. Anyway, i'll be selling mine this fall for around $19,000
I have a 2011 E350 Cabriolet and a 2011 GL350 both bluetooth and the iPod Connector.
I am having an issue with the convertible. If I start playing music before the car has found the phone or if I receive/make a call while music is playing, the music shuts off and will not resume again unless I physically disconnec the iPod connector and reattach. The GL works flawlessly it is only the convertible.

Anyone out there know what sensor or computer part I must change or reset to get a correct outside temp reading on the dashboard temp sensor?
The temp now stays at 136 degrees F, and the airconditioning is continually trying to compensate.
This is the only auto carwash I ever use, so I don't know if the mast was getting old and developing cracks or they have modified the carwash brushes.
The piece costs whopping $155 from local MB. That is the painted base and mast with the gaskets. Does anyone know of a site that has lower prices.
I found one on E-bay that has the base gasket and a black mast. I would like to get the original painted piece.
Thanks,
Joe
