I am thinking about getting a st. I really like the way it looks. I was wondering what the st owners on this board thought about their trucks so far.

PS. My dad works at the ford plant that makes the
Sport Trac. The plant is realy humming.

I just bought one. I probably ended up paying $1200 over invoice, but it had everything I wanted (leather, sport package, 4x4, cargo cage, 6 CD, convenience group, but no tonneau) and I didn't have to wait for an ordered vehicle. Kinda wish (now)I would've tried to get the tonneau for invoice as an add on later thing, but it's too late now. I love the car so far, but obviously have only had it for a short while. The interior is great and is comfortable and plush (went with leather). The ride is truck-like, but nice (previous car was a Jeep Wrangler though). I think the ST I bought is perfect--it's sporty yet snazzy. They don't feel that large to drive one bit. The stereo sounds adequate and the 6 CD player seems to be a good option. It takes a little bit to load them though, just have to be patient. All in all I think I'm going to love this vehicle. I had an Explorer previously and loved the amenities, but didn't feel it was sporty enough. I will probably get a tonneau cover in the future for times when I need to cover luggage or golf clubs and carry 4 people, but those times will be rare so it may never happen. Thanks to everyone on the town hall for all the insight you gave me. It really does help a great deal!

Does anyone know if the Sport Trac will be licensed as a pickup truck or a car? I live in the Chicago area and it makes a difference as to what streets you can drive on.

    How you doing,

I'm way up north of you in Ontario, Canada and every ST I have seen has the floor mats in the back seat for delivery. The dealership thinks because the ST comes with rubber floors figures you do not need floor mats. I get on their case right away. I'm going to purchase mine ST this week. Enjoy.

I think it is registered as an Sports Utility Vehicle. Don't know if that helps you or not.

I really like the new Explorer Sport Trac and am considering purchasing one soon. I want the 2WD but I would like everything else on it. I live in the Atlanta, Ga. area. Can anyone tell me if they have gotten a good deal in this area. If so, what dealer and how much?
  • wpoewpoe Member Posts: 41
I have talked with a few Dealers here in Atlanta. Marietta Ford gave me a price of $1000 over Invoice. Hub Ford in Tucker wouldn't Deal at all. I ended up at Perimeter Ford because I get 10,000 Delta air Miles for buying it there. There was a few others I visited but only test drove and didn't talk about price.

Is there a phone number where you can call Ford directly and check on the status of an ordered vehicle ?
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Yes there is. Just look back a ways at past posts and there'll be a number there.

Picked Up my SportTrac yesterday. Dealer made me wait about 45 minutes while they re-did all the paper work. Apparently they used my old address on the paperwork.

After the paperwork, I came out and the salesman had stuck the temp license plate to the rear window. I had to peal it off to roll it down. :-( He didn't know the rear window operated. The only SportTrac they had (Mine Now) was on the lot for just 8 hours.

Anyway I did a quick look over at the dealers and found my first big problem. I say big because I think they may have problems resolving it. The rear 60/40 fold down seat is out of alignment. The 60 side sits about 1 & 1/2 inches from the wall and the 40 side touches the wall. The 40 is also shifted to far towards the 60. The 40 must be laied flat before the 60 part can be folded flat. The 40's hinged platform (behind the seat) over laps the 60s hinged platform by about 1/4 inch preventing the 60 side from folding down by itself.

I was wrong about the charge of 24.50 for 12 US Gallons of gas in my previous post. I left with a full tank. It holds 20 gallons I think.

    Petty Suff:

I didn't realize that the button for the moon roof took up the entire space for the sunglasses/garage door opener. :-( I was looking forward to a space for my sun glasses.

I wish the clock was in a better spot than on the radio. There is so much visual clutter on the radio it takes me a sec to locate the time.

Looks like you need a special tool to remove the spark plug on the passenger side near the firewall. Its VERY tight.

I've got the limited slip 4.10 rear and it seems to work too good. Every time I go around a right hand turn the limited slip kicks in when I hit the grit on the road. I get a small chirp out of the right rear tire. It may be that I'm not use to the power in the V6 4.0. My old 4Runner had a V6 3.0 and I may be pushing the gas a bit more than I need to from habit. :-)

The power seat is too high for the rear view mirror. The mirror is right in my view. I'm
5' 11". I pushed the mirror all the way up and its better but I wish the seat would move lower.

I ended up with the heaver suspension and I can feel the difference between the two but it's still not truck like.

On the way in to work today I noticed the dew running off the roof right down the rear window. Opening the rear window in the rain might be a big problem. I also notice that the wind would lift the water off the bottom of the rear window and throw it straight up about 1/2 the height of the window. The water drops just hang in the air for a second before they fall in the truck bed. I don't have the Tounneau cover yet so I'm not sure what effect that will have on the air flow. But it was very interesting to watch. :-)

All of the power outlets stay alive even when the ignition is turned off. I would have preferred one of the power outlets in the front turn off with the ignition. I have to unplug my cell phone adapter every time or it will always stay on. Having one of the two go off with the ignition would be preferred.

The front head rests don't have a positive tilt lock. Firm pressure causes them to stand back up. My 4Runners head rests had a locking ratchet mechanism that kept them in position. The rear head rests are stiff to move up and down but I expect that will loosen up after time.

    Redesign Stuff:

If I was 6' or better I could hit my head sitting in the back seat. Its close but I'm ok. If ford could lower the seat or raise the roof 1 inch it would help. I don't plan on sitting in the back so...

The center console is lacking imagination. They could do better with the design. The standard console had imagination (the carry bag). The leather console is very nice but no imagination. Don't misunderstand me, I don't like the carry bag but it showed imagination.

There is no disable switch for the passenger airbag. Not a very big concern but I thought the industry had all that worked out by now.

The change holder is in a difficult spot and only holds dimes, nickels & quarters. Tokens don't fit any of the spots. They fall right through the quarter holder. The ash tray cup thingy is now my change holder.

I don't like the open area under the rear seats. I would have preferred they closed it off and make hidden storage out of it.

I wish heated seats was an option. Sitting on leather in the winter can be chilling.

    Unknown Stuff:

The brochure mentions a cargo divider but I'm not sure if it comes with the Tonneau cover or not. There is no separate part number for it that I can find.

The rear seat cup holder seems a bit flimsy and you don't realize at first that once you open it it needs to be pushed a bit more until it clicks.

The climate control is a bit confusing at first. Once you figure out what effect each setting does, its ok.

    Great Stuff:

I love the rear window up, express down, & vent feature.

The 6 disk CD although slow to load is great! And the radio is only missing one feature, auto volume adjust for interior noise level. The sound quality is good too. It just needs a bit of fade to the rear for a more even sound.

The fog lamps work great. Gives the extra light you need for turning in dark places.

The dashboard looks VERY slick in the dark. Well lit controls and well placed. The radio looks bigger in the dark because you can only see the display and buttons. I'm a bit concerned about fighting for control of the radio with the back seat passengers. The rear radio controls are an excellent idea but I haven't used them yet.

Compared to my 4Runner I've got POWER. I can't wait to try towing up hills. My 4Running couldn't hold 65 MPH while towing a double Wave Runner trailer up hill. It would fade off to about 58-60 MPH.

The storage areas behind the rear seats are bigger than I thought. I've got all of my gear in there and still have room to spare. The passenger side rear storage has a pocket on the door and IMHO its a much better place to put the owners manual. This leaves the glove box and center console free for junk. Compared to my 4Runner the center console is HUGE. I expect I'll loose stuff in the bottom of it. :-)

My wife for some reason loves the door grips. I think they're ok, but she loves them. My wife has also decided that we should have 3 kids because the Sport Trac has 3 child seat secure points in the back. (I'm not sure if this should be listed under Great Stuff )

The truck is also lower then my 4Runner. Although this is not as desirable for off road I prefer not having to climb up and down. I don't use the running board on the SportTrac getting in and out, I did on the 4runner. Jumping out of the 4Runner I also had a bad habit of hitting my pager on the seat, turning it off by accident.

The rear passenger climate controls are great. My 4Runner only had rear passenger heat. Although you cannot adjust the temp from the rear I assume it provides both Heat and Air Conditioning. You can adjust the fan and the output (Either floor or face).

I haven't driven it very far yet (Dealer to Work to Home to Work) about 15 miles total, so I don't have much handling input or HYW/CTY stuff to give. So far I LOVE it and will post what happens with the rear seat problem.

    Some short updates.

I found out the the Tonneau Cover comes with the cargo divider.

I havn't tried it but I read the rear climate control is heat only. :-(

The rear seat 60/40 folding problem was NOT difficult to fix. I loosened the both sides of the spring hinged panel and slid the bracket as far as it would go to one side in the elongated mounting holes. Now I can fold them individually. I'll still have to go back to the dealer to find out why the seats don't lock in evenly. That is the part that may be difficult to fix.

The cover is "late availability". It will be on my ST due for delivery about 5/1.

I was told that one does not want the dealer installing it. As well, the price will have labor to install added to the factory price.

Sure wish I knew what "truck ride" meant.

Just put a ST on order...was told by the dealer that I couldn't order the tonneau yet and if I wanted it then I would have to wait to place the order. does anyone know if you can order it? and if I get a production slot after may 1st can I add the tonneau to my order? does any one have harvest gold with dark interior???? how does it look?

    thanks
  • tl565tl565 Member Posts: 78
Maufacturers are not allowed by Federal law to put an airbag shut-off switch if there are rear seats available. The Ranger and F-150 have a shut off switch, but since the ST has a "real" back seat, they are not allowed to put a switch in.

Enjoy your ST. Mine is on order. My dealer has completely sold out of the 5 they got and have a waiting list for the next several incomings.
  • pbanko7pbanko7 Member Posts: 17
saw harvest gold with dark interior at the cleveland auto show end of february. it looks great. colors complement each other very well. in fact, i think the medium tan is kind of weak looking.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
The rear climate is a/c and heat. I love my Sport Trac! Couldn't think of a better all-around vehicle for the money. Still think I'll get a tonneau cover, but I'm nervous about what they'll cost through the parts department and labor to install. The one thing that seems a bit awkward to me is the height of the driver's seat. It seems really high to me, even after adjusting. You can get it fairly low, but you feel like you'll fall off the front of it. Anyone interested in a Sport Trac--get one, you won't be disappointed. I should probably wait till I've had mine more than 2 days to say that though.
  • zack1000zack1000 Member Posts: 84
To everyone who is concerned about the cost of the dealer installing the tonneau cover please read message #89. In it you will find that the cover is meant to be removed and installed by the consumer depending on what is being carried in the bed. Thus you shouldn't need to pay a dealer anything to install the tonneau---you would just drop in the bed yourself.

Looking at Leasing. Can anyone tell me what rates they have gotten? Was quoted for a 4x4, power roof, Cd, convenience package, no moneydown 3 yr - $395 per month. From all of the information I have found I calculate $375 to be fair but I can't get the dealer to budge! Thanks!

I just placed my order for a torreador red st with tan leather interior. Dealer showed me a sample of the color. Thought it was a nice metallic red. Got all the bells and whistles, including tonneau cover, except for engine block heater for 29,000. Got 1,000 off sticker price. I didnt hassle over the price. Havent seen a red one yet. Anyone got a red one? How does it look? Wont be in until May.
  • tl565tl565 Member Posts: 78
I saw a Torreador Red ST at my dealer. It looked great, it was not too loud like some reds can be. The contrast of the red and gray lower body cladding/bumpers looked sharp too. Of course it sold immediately like all the others the dealer has received so far

I ordered mine, Black on Black.
  • el88el88 Member Posts: 14
I bought a Toreador Red ST with all the bells and whistles, leather upgrade, premium sport group, 6 cd disc etc.. on 3/11/00. A real attention getter!!!
Go to the msn carpoint website http://carpoint.msn.com/Vip/Overview/Ford/Explorer%20(2001)/New.asp/, there are a few pictures of some ST's. I have the red ST saved as my wallpaper on my computer. My wife drives the ST to work daily (30mi rd trip). She loves the ride and handling. We have two 1999 f-150's (one is a 4x4 company truck the other is a flareside driven by my son)this left my wife driving the hand me down 1988 Toyota PU with a 3" liftkit and the hardest ride you can imagine. Compared to the three, the ST rides more like a car than a truck

Saw a Torreador Red and have to agree it looked really sharp. To the person who ordered the Black ST--it looks really sharp. I love mine! Drove it on the interstate today and loved every minute of it. Vented the moonroof and the rear window and it allowed in a pleasant amount of air. Can't see liking anything better. Enjoy!

is anyone else bothered by this? it seems to be right in my field of view out the windshield. seems like just a poor design. ford should have moved the mirror up higher, or had it designed to come down out of the overhead console, like my honda, and not stick it right in the center of the windshield. maybe you could get used to it, but if ford doesn't change this, i would be tempted to take this brand new vehicle to an aftermarket shop and ask them to reposition the rearview mirror, or possibly even give me a smaller one. any comments?

Me and my wife recently ordered a harvest gold with the convenience group and the pem sport group. We wanted the hard tonneau cover but our dealer said ford isn't installing them till june.(not good i wan't as soon as possible). I will still order factory one and should be very easy to put on myself. Seeing that it is removable. WE was also told that the 6 cd changer was $550 extra... not true... $229 for invoice and $270 for retail . I got this info from a great sight... It is autopricing.Check it out!!!I wish I would of found it before I ordered mine..Address is http//autopricing.autoworld.com/autopr.htm
Hope this will help others!!! oo yea i was also told it is going to take 6 weeks for me to get mine... Good Luck Jeff

Isn't the rear view mirror on an adjustable stalk coming out from the windshield? I thought it had two pivot points so that it can be raised up or down depending on the drivers preference.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Doesn't bother me any and yes I think it's on a double pivot.
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
    I agree.

I pushed the Rear View up as high as it will go (Both Pivots) and it is still in my Vision. I've got the Seat as low as it will go. I'm 5'11" and I am considering unscrewing it. The seat is VERY comfortable but I feel it is to high.
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
Don't get suckered by the salesman. They CAN order the cover for you. If you don't get it as part of the sale you'll have to buy it at the parts counter pricing. Which is usually allot higher. Make him/her invoice it to you when you order the Truck and get a "We Owe" slip from them.
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
Thanks for the info on the Air Bag switch. That explains it! It also makes safety/technical sense to do it that way.
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
Thanks for the update I still havn't tried it but if its true Edmunds needs to change their description because they state,

    air conditioning, rear heat ducts;

    Ford says

    high series floor console with rear climate/audio controls;
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
    Another short update:

I checked the ground clearance on the Sport Trac using a curb. It cannot cross a standard curb without scraping the skid plates. My old 4Runner had no problem with the same test. I'll let you know how the off road test goes.
  • dep7dep7 Member Posts: 12
if I order tonneau cover will that push my production date back until they become available which could be in may/june time frame? the salesmen informed me that If I wanted the tonneau they would even look at my order until the tonneau was available and that could push my delv/production slot back weeks/month..Is this true....
    thanks for all the help
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
My suggestion is to ask the dealer to order it separately. I bought my SportTrac off the lot but the dealer ordered my cover separately. It may be true that if you order the cover with the truck it will delay the truck but I REALLY doubt it. It sounds like dealer hype to me. Take a walk to another dealer and see what they will do for you. Start dealing from scratch and stand firm on what you want. If you don't get what you want you still have the first deal in the works.

We have been looking for a while for a new vehicle and couldn't decide between a truck or an SUV and then I read the information on Edmund's regarding the Ford Sport Trac. Sounded like the perfect solution so I called our local dealership and asked if they had any. She said they had gotten one in in the color white but she did not expect it to last long. So - I called my husband he reluctantly went with me to the dealership because he wasn't sure he was ready to buy yet - actually I had to practically drag him there. I also had told the dealer that we would come only to drive it to see if we would like it for the ones they had coming in later because I definitely did not like the color white. Well...we got there, took one look, one test drive, came back in to the dealership and my husband and I both were in agreement - we were ready to make a deal! I thought I would hate the color white but with the grey leather interior and black bedliner, roof rack, etc. and later the black tonneau cover it is absolutely beautiful. What a head turner! Ours is loaded, leather group, 6 disc cd changer, moonroof, etc. Drives like a dream, has plenty of room. We are very happy with our choice. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone like us who would like to have a truck but don't really need a big truck and like the convenience and comfort of the SUV. I believe we are the only ones in our area with one at this time. We have already been stopped several times and asked about it. I can't really give you any techical information since that's not my area of expertise but I know what I like and I love this. I've driven a Toyota Tacoma for the past 3 years - what a relief to get out of that! Have also enjoyed reading everyone's else's posts. Happy driving!

One more for the Petty Stuff Category:

It is difficult to access the electric seat control with the driver door closed. I have a small hand and I still find it difficult to reach the control with the door closed.
  • rockygrockyg Member Posts: 1
a great place to find info on vehicles and invoice pricing is "digitalcars.com". I pulled invoice off there and ordered a sport trac from my local dealer.he gave me a very fair price without haggling.I ordered "estate green" which is not yet available for some reason, although the use that same color on expeditions. if anyones heard why the colors late coming please let me know
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
I definitely agree with the statement that it's hard to operate the power seat controls with the door closed, but oh well. I finally figured how to get the seat down a little further. You can move the whole control directly down and it moves the seat down without tilting it like pushing forward on the control does. It doesn't seem to go down too far though. I have no problem with where the rearview mirror is and I'm 5'11". I have noticed that with my moderately wide butt the seats seem to hug a little tight though. Overall I love this vehicle! Looks like my first tank will be about 16mpg or so combined interstate, but mostly in town. I am ready for the tonneau to come out though! It's not too big of a deal for now, but if I have four sets of golf clubs in the back and a group of us go out to eat, it sucks flipping the seats down and moving them from the bed to the back seat.

In response to : Bought New Sport Trac .

I know the feeling. I was not even in the market for a new vehicle, I was just getting my oil changed, minding my own business when I spotted a new ST on the lot. Before you knew it I was inside it taking a test drive. A few minutes later I ordered one!
  • jlurksactojlurksacto Member Posts: 17
Have wanted a ST from the moment I saw a
picture of one, and when one came into a
dealer here, had to have one. Ordered a
2WD with all the bells & whistles less the
block heater (not really needed in sacto)
for 100 over invoice (includes 28 for gas
and 130 advertising) thru Bonanza Ford in
Cheney, wa. Am going to have to fly in and
drive home but am due for vacation in about
six weeks. Couldn't even come close to
that price in central (northern) CA

The tonneau cover will hold up production until May 1st (and that date could change again). I was going to get an IOU from the dealer and pay now for the cover, but all vehicle orders will be filled first before the parts department can get the tonneau covers. The tonneau covers may not be available from the parts department until Sept-Oct time frame (maybe longer). I canceled may tonneau cover so they could begin building my vehicle. There are a couple of after market companies that are going to offer tonneau covers in the same price range. They may be even better quality than the one from Ford. We'll see....

Just got a call from the Dealer, my Cargo Cage should arrive in 7-10 Days. No delivery date on the Tounneau covers yet.

At least Cargo Cages are Available. :-)

I am considering purchasing a Sport Trac in the
Atlanta, Ga area. I want it loaded. Can anyone
tell me what they paid for theirs in this area?
  • geepsygeepsy Member Posts: 10
Hey Hi Neighbor...I got a price which was 3% over invoice at a local dealer here in Yreka CA, I wonder how it compares to yours? It was 26,300 tax, license and all the goodies including engine block heater (we DO need it here). Of course this is via phone and not on paper...he wants me to come in and sign on the dotted line...says he will give me 9,500 for my Ford Taurus GL with 66,000miles on it..has all the goodies too including integrated phone but no CD and no electric seats...I want to go on vacation too.;0! Can you let me know your cost and all the goodies..did you figure in your flight and all...I really love this rig! Really great for a city girl in the country! I have loved this site since December when I was told about it..I think on ZDTV...Peace to all.

I can't help you with pricing in the Atlanta Area but I can give you the Excel sheet I used to calculate my price. It contains the price I paid. Just fill-in/change the white boxes to match your truck order and it will tell you the amounts, taxs, totals, estimated payments, and max dollars the dealer could make. The sheet is locked but there is no password if you want to unlock it. I should of brought my lap top and this sheet when I made my deal it would have made things smoother. I hope it helps you. Standard disclaimer if its broken I'm not responsible.

Sounds like you and my wife had the same idea. She really didn't want a truck or a full SUV but something in between. Since all our present vehicles are or have been white (Southern Calif.weather of +115 deg F makes the summer months more bearable), one look at the Toreador Red ST with leather interior and she didn't care if she got blisters on her behind in summer, she want it. I still have driven it yet since we bought it on 3/11/00. She drove it to San Diego, Calif. the other day, took the O/D off, left it in cruise control it zipped over the mountains (6%grade) with ease. NO PROBLEM!!!

I am trying to figure out if a Sport Trac would work for me since I really like it. I need to know what the measurements are at the back with the back seats down. I have two dogs that would need to ride in the back seat section. Does anyone know what the measurements are in that section?

    How you doing,

Cargo volume (cu. ft.) behind rear seat is (36.8 feet) with seats down

Hi to the north. I'm paying the dealer 25,630.
Right now the one way ticked fm Sacto to
    Spokane is $104. So I figure I'm $362 over
    invoice. 1. 28 gas-dealer filled tank
    2. 130 advertising
    3. 100 dealer advertised 100 over
    4. 104 1 way plane ticket
I drive to Ontario, OR about once a month so
will stop off there on trip south from Spokane
and consider this trip a monthly. No extra
gas or motel cost. Hope this helps. Jim M
