L.A. seeing more people living out of their cars

Knoll said she can barely afford to drive around with the rising price of gasoline eating away at the $950 monthly disability check she receives because of mental illness. Having lost her job and her three-bedroom house, Darlene Knoll has joined the legions of downwardly mobile who are four wheels away from homelessness.

She is living out of her shabby 1978 RV, and every night she has to look for a place to park where she won't get hassled by the cops or insulted by residents.

"I'm not a piece of trash," the former home health-care aide said as she stroked one of five dogs in her cramped quarters parked in the waterfront community of Marina del Rey.

Yes, agree. Those are the "rob Peter to pay Paul, don't have a pot to '-' in" types. I'm surrounded by those in my burb; I just don't understand it. I guess growing up poor & not getting an allowance really did help me because I save every dime I can and spend wisely!! I take being called cheap as a compliment

A lot of people I used to work with had that mentality and some got burned badly when the good times stopped rolling. Oh well, enough with the gripes, back on topic.

i had to dip into the throttle a few times to get some heat into the engine, before the test.

I've done that myself, especially on the old Merc and Nissan Turbo-turd I had years back. Got to take 'em out on the x-pressway and blow 'em out a little, as pops would say.

Gas prices by work dropped somewhat. After the initial 12 rise last Friday the prices have dropped back down about a dime at most places. The Citgo, Jewel and a Shell dropped to $4.099, but the Shell & BP right across from work are still at $4.199. Hopefully the $4.10 price will hold until next Monday ~ Tuesday and I can get a "cheap" fill-up (fingers crossed).

I read a similar article a couple months ago about homeless women that stay in parking lots in different cities. Though the article concentrated on CA (can't remember the exact city), there were also areas in Seattle, Georgia and other states where there are specific parking lots set up just for women, and men, to spend the night in their cars. None of the lots were for men and women, for safety reasons, and each were guarded during the night by either city patrols or security guards. This particular lot was for women and they would pull their cars / SUVs in between 6 and 9pm and would stay there until 7am I believe. Some worked, some not, some pulled in SSI or other type of benefit but none could afford a house or apartment. They made their own community basically. And these are the things you don't here about. Very humbling and makes you really be grateful that you have a job and a house / apartment to go to every night.

I don't know if someone has already posted this... but all major oil companies posted record profits last year..... hmmmm I wonder why??? If they are making record profits, does that mean that they have jacked the prices so high it was bound to make a profit or are we just using so much gas that they are turning a profit inspite of the rising cost per barral of oil??

By the way.. gas is around 2.90 here in Phoenix

And I thought my $60 fillups were bad... But that was also every other day. Because of location and it just happened to be when I needed gas, I gased up 3 consecutive times at the same station... The ladies at the counter when I paid were in shock by the time I came in the 3rd time in less than 5 days.

Same here... were too close to California and so I don't see $2.00 ever being a reality again. We're still at 2.73-85. Averages were 2.73-79 for the Arco's and ConcoPhillips and 2.85-89 for the Shell's and Chevron's.

2.00 would be nice... that's means I could fill up for around $40 and save $20 a tank. That's 60 dollars a week, $240 a month. I can't believe I am saying I would love to see $2.00. It wasn't long ago that we never thought gas would get ABOVE $2. And we freaked out when it did. Aw "SIGH" (where's that "sigh" emoticon???)

Southern Oregon gas prices are about 3.45-3.50 for regular. Premium is up around 3.73 or so. Diesal is still below or right at $3. Lower with PUC card's.

here in humble little 'ole Willcox, AZ, is Mustang selling it for $3.76 and Doc's matching that price. Doc's used to be a Standard Chevron and his price was about 8-10 cents a gallon higher than Mustang was. But once he broke free from the big 'ole monster he's free to lower his price somewhat. And you get a $.03 discount per gallon if you pay your bill in cash, too. I know, sounds dopey but you'd be surprised how people's eyes light up when they tell you about that 3 cent savings per gallon!

Talk about being happy to give you their 3 cents worth!

Shoot and you're ten degrees cooler than us today too. (102 at the airport currently - my house thermometer shows 108 - if the gas doesn't kill me, paying for the AC will :P ).

hee-hee, while the wife and son are gone to Chi-town on vacation it's just me and the 5 pets. I'm not turning the A/C on, just using fans.

Yeah...workin' great, man. I think I've sweat away about 35 gallons of sweat since she left.

90 degrees and warm today here....but it's a dry heat! RUG still $3.76 at Mustang and Doc's, but I'll check it again when I cruise home on my 1/4 mile commute.

was on Monday for $4.129 for the truck. It was time for the normal fill-up and right on time because most every station raised their prices Tuesday afternoon by 20 cents, except for the Mobil and Citgo by me. They were actually at $4.099 so I topped off the Cutlass (that should last me about a month). But by Wednesday morning they were the same as the rest. The prices actually jumped faster than I thought (believed they wouldn't go up until Wednesday) but I guess the stations / sellers wanted to start the July 4th gouging, I mean price adjustment, early.

Oh, the wifey came to town just in time to enjoy our 1% ~ 2% sales tax increase!! We're sitting at 10.25%, 11.25% depending on which areas of Cook County and the purchase you made. Hope she didn't go shopping downtown...

We're doing geothermal, but the action if over in northwest Colorado near Rangely and then back west towards Green River UT. Lots of work over there in the oil patches.

Dinosaur CO isn't all that far from Sinclair actually (the one in Wyoming :shades: ).

Gas in Louisville is 20-40 cents higher than in neighboring cities... about $4.24 gallon. Our governor (Bashear) is asking for an investigation. Says he is going to put pressure on the oil companies to explain why Louisvillians are paying so much more. A fruitless effort to be sure. :sick:

Out prices have dropped from almost every station magically selecting $4.15 as their price to $4.06 and even $3.99 late this afternoon. All the people filling up to leave occurred yesterday and today.

Our prices dropped about 20 cents. Costco is $4.35. Filled the LS400 with 91 octane for $4.55. Premium seems like a bargain now.

Is there a special event in the area like Thunder over Louisville?

No... that event is the first part of Derby week. But, we are always having big conventions etc. at our Fairgrounds. The only thing I can think of is our city is so much bigger than those surrounding, in the state, so maybe the old supply and demand equation.

Most common is $3.95 for 87.

Yikes, 95 cents higher for diesel than 87, and at the height of summer! I can see those new diesels (VW et al), if they ever get here, are going to be big hits with consumers. :sick:

$4.13 RUG
$4.25 mid-grade
$4.37 premium
$4.79 - $4.89 diesel

I need gas but decided to hold out to see if the $5 fall in crude oil futures reported this morning holds up. Maybe that'll save me a quarter when I do have to fill up.

I just did a chart of the monthly gas prices I paid here in Phoenix over the last 4 years.

It's almost a perfect roller coaster - ups, then downs, then ups, then downs.

Right now it is at a peak. I expect a valley next.

Look for gas prices to go DOWN in the next 2-4 months.

Yesterday we jumped a dime up to $4.09 here in State College and that's the first change since May 27. I'm just curious what was so different now. Back at the end of May, crude was running like $118-$120 per barrel, and the price at the pump, which HAD been changing with the price of crude (up faster than down of course) has stood still through all the run up, including that one day when oil jumped over 8%.

There's still something about the oil markets that stinks in Denmark :confuse:

I made it 5 weeks on the last tank but broke down and filled up the Outback today. Paid $4.10 for regular (saved .03 a gallon using my grocery affinity card). The wagon was pretty empty although the low fuel light wasn't on - the 12.5 gallons it took came in over $50 and that's a first for it.

Filled up for this price at Hess today for 87. The "no name" gas at the local car wash is one cent lower.

We've been in a bit of a "holding pattern" for a good 3 or so weeks now.

...I went to the Carlisle Mopar show and saw a Sunoco with Regular selling at $3.99 that morning. By the time I returned that evening, it had gone up to $4.09! Nuts!

Here in Oklahoma our gas is not as high as some----I pay between 3.759 and 3.799 for gas / 10% ethanol and I believe diesel is around $4.05-$4.15. Pure gas is around $3.999 to $4.09 but it changes about every three days!!! And in some parts of the state gas can be a little higher or a little lower but not by more than 7 cents.

Good for you !!!! Here in Oklahoma our gas has gone down considerably to 3.41 in some places. I saw gas at 3.43 here in my little suburb of Oklahoma City last night. Who knows just how long it will last though. However, every few cents counts for us.

Just filled at Costco. $3.99 for RUG
Premium was only $4.14 per gallon. There must be a glut of Premium. It used to be 20 cent difference.

I think $3 by election is likely.

Rug-$3.93 down from $4.15 in two weeks!
High test-$4.15 down from $4.35.

I have been hearing that oil @$122 per barrel is a critical point. If it breaks that barrier they say the price could plunge.

So what happens today? Some one attacks a pipeline in Nigeria and the price goes back up $1.75. How convenient! Just as the price was set to break that barrier.

I think the powers that be are getting desperate.

You do realize that the international oil market could give a rat's patootie about the US "election" date, right?

The election or the fact that we are having one plays an absolutely negligible part in the prices.

Worldwide gas and oil prices are coming slightly down from record highs, and it's not just happening in the United States.

If there was a dramatic fall of gas prices only in the United States, it would be easy to say it was part of a conspiracy. However, since the entire world has been affected by the spike in oil/gas prices and the entire world is enjoying the benefits of the now slightly lower prices, it's hardly anything to do with politics in the USA.

I think people need to examine this supposed "conspiracy" with common sense and understand that the arguments for anything like that are circumstantial at best.

This is a world oil market issue, not an American political party issue.

According to the news, the price of gas dropped more this week than any other week ever. I filled the Ranger PU after a month sitting. Price $3.93 per gallon. Worst part is the longer I let it sit between fillings the worse the mileage. After 33 days it only had 145 miles and I got 13.25 MPG. Worst mileage ever on that truck. I think the 10% ethanol is evaporating when a vehicle sits in the hot sun day after day.

Our gas has dropped a lot--10% ethanol is 3.399 and may even go lower today---Pure gas is about 3.55 ---never look at premium !! However, air transportation has NOT gotten any cheaper because of fuel prices-- However, with the triple digit heat temps--no one wants to get out anyway !!!
