Usually gas prices and oil prices rise and fall in tandem. Also there is usually a relationship between wholesale gas and retail gas.
Lately, things seem out of wack. Demand fell but oil went up (coming down now though). Gas went up after IKE even though there was minimal damage.
I also notice that gas is taking a long time to match wholesale price reductions. In my area with the taxes and profits, gas is usual 90 cents higher than the wholesale level. Today wholesale gas was at about $2.17. This means that RUG should be at about $3.07, yet the cheapest I can find is $3.49, with most higher.
What are they doing? Perhaps the gas supply system sees decreased profits when Obama gets in and they are milking things for all they are worth until then.

Something is really amiss when San Diego gas is cheaper than most. We have gas as low as $3.35 and diesel for $3.67. That is down since yesterday when I topped my Sequoia at Costco for $3.41.
I saw my first $3.10 regular yesterday. It was a no name station (One Stop) and that was the cash price. They wanted another dime per gallon for credit. With a 5% card I would still come out ahead with the card but I don't buy there.
Last I paid was $3.18 and it's still coming down.
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
Last night TV showed a Sunoco station in a small, rural town with gas selling at that price. Usually gas there is higher than our average around the metro area; higher than the low price competitive area, but lower than the high priced stations.
Stations around are coming slowly down through the $3.30s. I bought gas for $3.17 with a $0.10 gallon off with Kroger card.
dtownfb: that's a real discount at $1.10 per gallon!
Yes the discount is for real. Giant Foods is a grocery chain and some of their stores sell gas. They offer $0.10/gallon discount for every $100 spent. Every once in a while they have a special if you buy a certain amount of specific products, you get $0.40/gallon off. since we shop there regularly, we use the discount to fill up my wife's van.
$3.89 RUG 10/04/08. Some stations did not have any gasoline at all for a day or two. At my local BP station there was only Regular and no other grades.
Of course my next fill-up will be at Giant where we get $1.10/gallon off our next fill-up.
Too bad that's not the same Giant chain we have down here in Maryland! Here they're just grocery stores.
BTW, I was up in PA yesterday, for fall Carlisle. Cheapest I saw gas was for maybe $3.199 per gallon, on a few signs off I-83, just above York. Actually, I take that back...at the Hess in Carlisle, it was down to $3.179.
Down here in Maryland, it's still around $3.499. I probably should've stopped up there to fill up, but it wouldn't have saved me much. I drove my 2000 Intrepid 2.7 and started off with a full tank, having filled up Friday night, less than 2 miles from home. Filled up again when I got back home last nite, and only used about 7.6 gallons on the whole round trip, ~234 miles. Fuel economy came out to just under 31 mpg, which I guess ain't bad for a 9 year old car with 142K miles on it, that by today's standards is considered large-ish.
Too bad that's not the same Giant chain we have down here in Maryland! Here they're just grocery stores.
Actually it is the same chain but they do run the PA stores differently than the MD store.
Carlisle always has the lowest gas prices in this area, right along the Miracle Mile. I'm just glad gas prices are finally going in the right direction. I'm more worried about the effects of oil prices on heating bills this winter.
I'm more worried about the effects of oil prices on heating bills this winter.
I've heard that with home heating oil, if you have an annual contract where they lock in a price, it's usually best to have it renew around the Sept/Oct timeframe. That's sort of a sweet spot right in between where summer demand for crude oil in general drops off, but before home heating oil demand rises and makes prices go back up.
Of course, with this crazy economy and the way oil gets speculated, who knows anymore?
Temps down here are starting to drop down into the 50's at night, and got down to around 48 one night last week. If I hadn't gotten the heat pump installed a couple weeks ago, I know I would've been firing up my oil furnace by now. I do miss that nice, toasty, instant warm feeling that the furnace provided. But in the coldest months, that thing could chug down 3-4 gallons per day, and I know I'm not gonna miss that! I imagine that York is just enough further north to make heating bills a lot worse. I usually went through about 450 gallons per year.
for regular, BUT about a month or two ago everyone switched over to E10 crapola. Perhaps some of the price drop is because we're only getting 90% gasoline?
I don't think we have much choice, now that Congress has mandated this boondoggle of using X million gallons of ethanol by 2016 or some such year.
The pumps I use invariably say "may contain up to 10% ethanol," so you don't know for sure how much ethanol (if any) you're getting at any particular time.
We are still hanging right around $3.90 for RUG, give or take a little. Local news just reported we are the third highest in the country right now, just behind Alaska and Hawaii. My usual station was down to $3.59 this morning. They still have no plus or premium. Of course I filled up yesterday at $3.66. Oh well, I guess my kids don't have to go to Duke. :P
on my way into work this morning (Seabrook, MD). That's down a touch from something like $3.55-3.59 earlier in the week. On Tuesday I went out towards the county line, and saw it for as low as $3.359, so I'm sure it's dropped a bit there since then, too.
That is about right. NyMex wholesale gas closed Friday at $1.80. None of US should be paying over $3 right now. Even less when you factor in 10% subsidized ethanol.
C'mon 2 buck RUG.
CA is still at 67.1 cents tax per gallon of gas. Tops in the nation.
I wonder if NY is higher than that chart indicates. Our sales tax on gas is 4% by the state and then an additional 3-5% depending on the county. NY city may be even higher.
Anyhoo, gas at my local station dropped another 3 cents yesterday making RUG $3.17. About 15 miles away gas is down to $2.99 at one station. (just far enough away to cancel out the savings).

I forget the name of the borough, but I stopped off at an Exxon station at Exit 32 off I-83, north of York on Saturday nite. Got 87 octane for $2.999. Now that gas prices are dropping, I've noticed people do seem to be driving faster. Have to admit, I even did it myself, although it was partly to avoid becoming a safety hazard.
I made the same trip up there last weekend for Fall Carlisle, and got around 31 mpg, keeping it around 65 mph for the most part. This time around, I was running more like 70-75, hitting 80-85 on occasion. Even with the more spirited driving, my 2000 Intrepid still managed 30 mpg. Oddly, that car seems to be getting better fuel economy now than it did when it was newer. I've heard that's actually common with cars, once they get a few miles on them. I guess mine was just a late bloomer (142,000 miles).
I dunno what gas is down to here in MD. When I came home on Saturday nite, the local Shell station had 87 for $3.239. Local Citgo was closed, so its sign was off. And I haven't left the house since then, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's dropped some since Saturday.
I topped the Sequoia at Costco today. Price $3.21. On the way home passed an Indy selling gas for $3.09. Oh Well. Should be to $2 for part of the country soon. CA has too much tax to ever get that low. Oil dropped today. Brent selling at $73. I would doubt it will go much below $60. Then you never know with this economy. No one would have guessed it could go below $10 in 1998.
I see a few stations in the $2.8X and couple were at $2.99 on the map. That looks like with gas on the markets tickers on CNBC showing $1.9X the companies are holding prices up to make good profits.
The spread retail around the area may mean the companies are back to raising gas prices on late Wednesday and early Thursday and then they drop back after SAturday and Sunday and get raised again the next Thursday.
But I plan to top the tanks at $2.58 this morning!!!
was for $3.24 ($3.239), 87 octane, at the Jewel. Everyone else in the area seems to be following suit in lower prices, with Citgo being at $3.26, BP & Shell being $3.29. The Mobil was still at $3.36. But the Speedway on my work route was still $3.38. The Jewel has added a free donut with a 16 or 24oz. coffee purchase, which works out pretty well since you get a free 16oz. coffee with 8-gallon or more fill-up.
I was in the city working this past weekend and petrol prices were still in the $3.50+ range, with downtown Chicago higher still. Though I miss living in the city sometimes I don't miss the prices and taxes!!
I do find myself going a little faster unfortunately, have to stop that. I'm not sure if it's the drop in prices, that the truck is now running better or a combination of both. Any event I am getting back to being a slow-poke!

Still experiencing pesky shortages, but regular is becoming more readily available. Plus and premium very scarce.

NC avg. RUG at $3.65 or so. My usual station is down to $3.45. We still have widespread shortage of plus and premium.
Diesel was 3.89.
Price for regular unleaded in the York area ranges from $2.94 to $2.99. Local Rutters execs expects gas to drop to $2.50 by late fall.
Yesterday I filled up with RUG at $3.24 (down 5 cents in the past few days) and when I drove past the station in the afternoon it was down to $3.20.
This is still way high. Based on the wholesale price of gas it should be about $2.76 here.
