There was some stuff about Geithner recently and requiring oil futures traders to be able to accept delivery but I can't find the link. Just this about OTC derivatives rule changes. (Oil & Gas Journal).

    Gas prices tonight in Boise:

    2.45 regular
    2.57 midgrade
    2.67 premium

    and ...drumroll...

Diesel is now cheaper than regular, coming in at 2.39.

I have not checked Costco for a week. Locally the Shell station is $2.79 for RUG and $2.49 for Diesel. Shoulda, coulda bought a diesel BMW or Mercedes.

I hope something is done to control the huge price swings in oil futures. It is very disruptive to the economy.

We shall see how well he lives up to this promise.

    ROFLMAO.

The messiah won't do anything. He was the expert on the economy, unlike his opponent, according to his handlers and ads. We can see what's happened with the economy and all the money spent which won't be spent in any amount to help the recession now that the recession is essentially over. But that excess politicals' spending will hurt the country more than Carter.

And people will continue to stand up and support his lack of follow through. The media will ignore it. And the same two groups would have been ranting daily about Bush43 having done anything close to the level of this guy.

How does this affect gas prices? None. That's the point. Nothing will be done to control speculation. I see the prices slowing the consumer recovery end of the recession, which is already ending financially.

Bad people are behind it. People who already have millions to leave for their heirs, and who want to put the squeeze on the little guy who has, comparitively, nothing. Why?
    because he can.

    RUG is at $2.45-$2.49.

Still trying figure out why gas is going up since demand is steady and supply is up.

filled up my '76 LeMans with 93 octane for $2.679 per gallon. Prices are definitely creeping up, but looking in the car's mileage log, it showed how bad it could be. The last time I filled up the car was October last year, and that was $2.779 per gallon for 87 octane. So, things could be worse. And probably will be, before we know it.

With prices climbing like they are we have fallen into the situation once more where the prices on the Garden State Parkway are the cheapest around because they only change once a week and that is based on average prices for the last week. When teh spread gets big they start backing the line out onto the road. A coworker lost a car that way last summer.

Just filled the Sequoia at Shell in town. $2.75 for RUG. Diesel at that Shell station is $2.49 today. One Shell station we passed was $2.99 and 9/10ths. $3 gas is back in San Diego. Costco was too far out of the way. Not sure the price there. Probably $2.65 today.

This ought to help the recession along.

I would bet your Total Cost Per mile will be a heck of a lot less than any stinking hybrid. It pays to keep the old car running as LONG as possible. Especially with the newer cars designed to disintegrate in 7.25 years. :shades:

to $2.80 on average for 87 octane. A couple of Citgos are holding at $2.69 for 87 octane. So we're pretty much $3 for premium. Can't find older records, but am wondering when the last time pump prices were at these levels:

    What was crude going for?
What was the demand / supply?
What excuses were being used for the price jumps / hikes?

    :confuse:

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
I paid just over 3 for premium yesterday. I only needed 5 gallons though, so not bad.

Supply and demand relates to gas prices like the tooth fairy relates to dental work.

I have a friend who takes the cost per mile to extremes. Of course he is in a state where he has to pay property tax on the car every year so his method really makes sense. He buys a cheap but dependable used car and drives it forever. Has a old Volvo 850 that he paid maybe $3,500 for. He's put on 110K himself and it hasn't taken major repair. His cost of ownership is minuscule.

Its not speculators per se, but Wall Street manipulators and dumb government. Laugh if you want, but until the commodity exchange rule changes (incidently I believe these happened under Clinton and Gore even though Bush always gets the blame) when you bought commodity futures you had to either find a buyer before your option expired or take delivery. Under those rules we didn't have near the volatility and extremes. Now risk is substantially reduced encouraging profiteering while Wall Street greed screws average middle class working Americans yet again. When Wall St. greed works the US citizens get shafted so the privileged "few" get extraordinary wealth and when Wall St. breaks the average American has to subsidize those who were just screwing them over with government loans, tax breaks, etc.

Our premium is now going for $3.10 in my neck of the woods - had another price jump yesterday - 87 octane is now average $2.86, with some already at $2.90. The city is much higher still. We've pretty much jumnped a dollar in the last month!!

I'm lucky my daily driver only needs and likes 87 octane. My Olds likes 89 but I fed it 87 last night.
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
Agreed. It's all about their short, big gain - not thinking ahead of how this will effect everyone. We average, middle Americans get screwed coming and going. Maybe that's where the phrase originated - money guys sitting around at the club trying to figure out how to screw the little man. Then someone comes up with the scheme and says "With this, we can get them coming and going...muh-ha-ha-ha".

16 days = +60 cents. Crazy. The last time it went up that fast was Katrina.

Well, at least more people might start thinking AGAIN about fuel efficiency and buying a more efficient vehicle.

Was there a big change in supply or demand that we missed? Or some disaster that the news media didn't catch?

Or do some people just feel entitled to a bigger yacht? Hang em high...

RUG at Sheetz increased from $2.39 to $2.45 yesterday. At the same time, diesel went up from $2.19 to the same $2.45. So much for the brief window when diesel was less than RUG.

I think the cheapest for RUG around here is about $2.39 today, and I've put off filling up any of my cars for the last couple of weeks ... not running on empty yet.

I've said it many times before: the only thing predicable about gas prices is that they are completely unpredictable.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Fuel prices rose two cents since this morning at the Sunoco station on Rising Sun and Longshore in NE Philly. At 8 AM, RUG = $2.49, at 12:30 PM it's $2.51! Nuts!
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
Oh my total cost per mile on that '67 Catalina is probably hideous, simply because it's more of a fair weather toy than daily driver material. It gets about 10 mpg in mostly local driving, although it has broken 17 on the highway.

Premium fuel is currently going for around $2.70 per gallon around here, so this thing would cost me 27 cents per mile just in fuel!

I've been keeping track of my 2000 Intrepid's expenses, and over the ~9.5 years and ~146,000 miles I've had it, it's come out to around 22 cents per mile, plus gas/insurance, for a total of around 34 cents per mile.

At the rate I drive these days though, just about any car is going to have a pretty bad cost per mile. Most of my driving is local, and any money that I put into repairs (or a car payment, if I had one) is going to get amortized over fairly few miles.

I probably drive about 600 miles per month right now. So if I were to get a new car, my cost per mile would be about 16.7 cents per mile, per $100 of car payment. PLUS gas, insurance, maintenance, repairs, etc. So you might be right after all... something like a Toyota Camry Hybrid might actually end up costing me a fortune, on a CPM basis! :P
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Cheapest gas I can find in San Diego is $2.73 at Costco. Most are $2.79 - $2.89 for RUG. Diesel is mostly $2.39 - $2.49. Guys that bought the Jetta TDIs below invoice when diesel was high are laughing all the way to the bank.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
Gary says, "Guys that bought the Jetta TDIs below invoice when diesel was high are laughing all the way to the bank."

OK, that's the second time you said that. We get it.

Guys like me who bought a hybrid 5+ years ago have been laughing the whole time - even all those months when diesel was FAR higher than gasoline.

But just yesterday someone posted that diesel and gas were priced the SAME in his city.

So they might be laughing all the way to the bank, but disappointed in their balance when they get there.

Why gas prices are going up
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,414
    Supply and demand, of course!

Of course, oil is becoming ripe for speculation again as some fear the results of printing so much wallpaper fiat greenbacks. Safehaven and all that, but usage won't come into play.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
consumer reports article: the person writing says oil supply is low. That's the opposite of what I've heard real experts in the field say. They say the reserves of fuel and oil are higher than they've been for a while because of lower demand.

    Just another CR puff piece.

Relative bargain -- $2.38 for RUG at Hess. Prices overall have been stable for a week or so.

Gas Buddy shows Virginia and most of the South in the "green zone." OTOH, the Midwest is getting hammered, as is NY and CA (as usual). NJ is a safe haven, as always.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
Dayton was bumped two weeks in a row to $2.69 and then $2.89. Price started easing back down from $2.89 to $2.79 and a gas war area to $2.65.

Your $2.38 is, indeed, a bargain.

    U.S. Diesel Prices Surge
The national average price for regular gasoline jumped a dime to reach $2.62 a gallon. Despite a cumulative increase of 58 cents during the past six weeks, the price remained $1.42 below the average a year ago. Prices increased in all regions of the country with the East Coast gaining eight cents to reach $2.54 per gallon. The price in the Midwest shot up nearly 12 cents to settle at $2.70 per gallon. At $2.47 per gallon, the average price on the Gulf Coast remained not only the lowest of any region, but was the only region where the average price was below $2.50 per gallon. In the Rocky Mountains, the price rose nine cents to $2.52 per gallon. The price on the West Coast gained the most of any region, jumping over 12 cents to $2.80 per gallon. In California, the average price surged 14 cents to $2.89 per gallon.

The national average price of diesel fuel rose for the fifth week in a row, surging nearly 15 cents to $2.50 per gallon. That price was the largest weekly increase since May 26, 2008 but still $2.19 below last year. Prices in all regions of the country rose sharply. On the East Coast, the price jumped 15 cents to $2.52 per gallon. The average price in both the Midwest and Gulf Coast regions also shot up 15 cents to settle at $2.47 per gallon. The average price in the Rocky Mountains went up the least of any region but still jumped 10 cents. At $2.44 per gallon, the price there was the lowest of any region. The West Coast price moved up more than 14 cents to $2.60, while the price in California surged 17 cents to $2.68 per gallon

    It's up a dime here.

    2.69 regular
    2.71 mid-grade
    2.81 premium

2.55 at the grocery chain for regular

Didn't see a diesel pump; probably holding around $2.55.

LUTHERVILLE, Md. -- For a second time this month, contaminated gas bought in Baltimore County is being blamed for damaging dozens of cars.

The problems were first reported at the Exxon station in Parkton last week, and the Oceanic gas station on York Road in Lutherville is currently experiencing a similar problem.

Officials with Ocean Petroleum told 11 News the gas came from the Hess Corp. and damaged about a dozen vehicles Saturday night.

In a statement to 11 News, Ocean Petroleum said, "The gasoline was loaded at the Hess oil terminal at Curtis Bay and then resold and delivered to Ocean Petroleum."

Biglin said the gas station offered to get her car repaired and that Hess Corp. would foot the bill.

Ocean Petroleum said the problem is water in the gas and that other Hess stations might be involved.

"There are a number of other gas stations within the Baltimore area that have obtained fuel which was sourced from the Hess terminal that same day," Ocean Petroleum spokesman Ed Ellis said in a statement.

Phoenix, very difficult to find RUG for less than $2.50 a gallon.

Bring on the Volt !! Bring on the MiEV !! Bring on the Plug-Ins !!

From a story in my local paper:

NEW YORK - Retail gas prices climbed for the 50th straight day Wednesday, the longest streak in records dating to 1996, even as benchmark crude fell for the fourth day in a row.

Historically, filling station prices tend to rise during the summer as millions of vacationing Americans pour onto the highways. But a surge in crude prices during the past few months and less production from the refiners that make gasoline has added even more pressure on prices.

this morning I filled up my '67 Catalina with 93 octane at the local Shell. $2.919 per gallon. Last time I filled it up was back in April, when gas was $2.299. So, those prices are shooting up.

But on a more positive note, I broke 10 mpg on that tank! :P
