I just changed my oil at 1000 mi and what a breeze it is to do. Imagine that...an oil filter thats easy to get to, It only took auto makers 100 years to figure that one out!!. The reason I changed my oil so soon is because of break-in wear. I'm a machinist and I know that from the manufacturing process it is impossible to get rid of ALL the metal burrs and sharp corners not to mention any metal chips left over from the machining processes. Maybe I didnt need to change so soon but at least I have my own piece of mind.
I reported it at my dealer and simply was informed "we can't drive it at high speed and hope for a cross wind." In other words, if they can't recreate the noise themselves, they aren't willing to investigate what might be causing it.
Hey, Did you ever get the aftermarket install kit that you were after for the 2005 Tacoma? The reason I'm asking is that I will need the same install kit. I am purchasing the double-cab long bed 4x4 Tacoma soon, and I will be putting the Pioneer AVIC-N2 system in it. :shades:
I'm told by a friend who builds race car engines that in new engines metal particles can circulate through your engine that can cause wear inside the cyclinder chamber walls. So I changed my oil at 500 miles and took a flash light to the oil and could see metalic shavings or glitter in the oil.
The people who recommend leaving the oil in for 5000 miles probally are encouraging the theory of "break-in" Break in periods in a engine vary by opinions and a the driver's habits. Oil change at 5k might encourage a faster break-in period. Break-in of a new engine will increase gas milage and power. Break in is supposed to create a suction fit around the cylinder walls and the piston rings. the piston rings glid up and down the pistion walls.
some auto manufactures do put special oil in vehicles like AUDI and othe manufactures do the break in for you like porche.
While reading up on this subject a very prominent mechanic in the motorcycle world encourage driving the hell out of you vehicle right off the lot to create the best seal around the cylinder and piston rings. Again-that is on the web and is an opinion. He did provide photos of controlled test enviornment of a harsh break in and a grandmother driving break in.
One thing that is consistent is that sythenthetic oil should not be used until the break in period has passed.
My OPINION is that break-in should occur at approx. 12k miles. I also think oil should be changed at 500 miles and 1k and then follow then follow the every 3k mile rule. Ofcourse many will disagree with me, but all I know is that I took a flashlight to my '05 tacoma oil at 500 miles and metal glitter was everywhere.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't drive the TACO to work, it's a weekend driver for me right now. Every time I drive it though, I make sure the temperature gets in the normal range. On some of these short trips, I will sometimes make them a little longer just to warm it up properly.
I was told during breakin to not run it at the same rpm for any extended length of time which I didn't. I never took it over 4000 rpms with under 1000 miles on the odometer. Lately, I have taken it over 4000 rpms a few times, which when it's warmed up and for short periods, probably does no harm. I had the suspicion that the engine probably needed that anyways to help break it in with lower miles.
I plan on getting the oil changed next weekend. The dealer needs to understand that it will be at the 6 month mark. If the put up a fuss, I will do it myself because I already have a NAPA Gold filter, which was cross referenced with the OEM.
That info on the metal particles was very informative. I still doubt that waiting till the 5000 mark would hurt the motor from my knowledge and observations on other experiences.
the dealership had my truck for two days and they pretty much said exactly what 88toylc said, that they were not allowed to drive at high speeds and that they could not recreate the sounds. when i was driving it back home in the wind, i heard the buzzing again driving 75mph. the dealership did not charge me a penny since it is under warranty, but they said that since it is a new body design, there will be problems. unfortunately, there were not any reports in their bulletins. so if you are having this problem, please report it so that they know something is wrong and they can look into it in depth.

What does the manual say about the first oil change? Must have missed that part?
For those interested, you can go to your local hardware store, and pick up a piece if clear vinyl tube about 3.5 feet to 4 feet long, with a 7/16" OD (outside/inside diameter), and a 5/16" ID, and remove the rubber stopper from the bottom of the oil filter cup, and attach the tube. You can then drop the tube down to the bottom of the engine compartment, and reach up from underneath and pull the tube out from there, and have it drain into your oil pan. Took less than 30 minutes to change the oil and clean everything up (new record for me).
This little tip was in the service manual that I got a few days ago...
It took 5 full quarts of oil to fill it up to the full line on the dip stick. I will check if later to see if it needs more (V6 engine).
I just cut the top off a plastic 20oz. pop bottle and held that under drain spout when pulling filter off and it worked real good. When done I just threw it away
If you buy your oil from someplace like Autozone, they will usually dispose of your oil for you. As for the oil filter, I don't know. I usually throw mine in the trash...

Yeah, you would think, that the oil cooler would require more oil, but it doesn't make the distinction in the service manual. It just says if you have the 4x4 or the Prerunner, if I remember right. Nothing about the oil cooler. (Unless the 4x4 and Prerunner both come with the towing package?)
Oh, I also take my oil to AutoZone (used oil, that is). I don't even buy mine there. They won't let you leave your containers though, and those shouldn't be recycled (or at least, we aren't supposed to for some reason). I also trash the filter, usually after draining as much oil as I can from it.
Sometimes have trouble getting reverse to engauge on my 5-speed manual tranny on my 2005 Tacoma. Have to take it into another gear and then back or sometimes just give her a little bit of clutch to go.
No syncros on reverse or something? Seems somewhat stubborn at times. Anybody else have the same thing. Perhaps theres some technique/trick that I'm missing?
I had a Celica (5-spd manual - 4 cyl) that used to do the same thing. I checked the owner's manual. It said for a smooth shift into reverse you should push the clutch pedal all the way, wait 1-2 seconds then put it in reverse. It worked like a charm on the Celica. Try it and see, hope it works for you!
I have the same problem with my Jetta... If it will not go into reverse, shift it into neutral and let out the clutch. Then plush the clutch back in and it should go into reverse. You might have to wait a sec for the transmission to spin down with the clutch pushed in before you shift it back into reverse...
I am curious about what some of you on this forum suggest for break-in period. This will be my first Toyota and I want to make sure it lasts a long time. In shopping around for the best deal I will end up buying out of state. This will leave me with having to drive constant miles/speed for the trip home (300 miles). This goes against the recommended break-in. What to do? Thanks for the information.

Details should be in the owner's manual in the glove box, but in any event, I believe that you begin w/ the engine ignition off, press and hold the odometer reset button, start the vehicle and continue to hold the reset button until the maint req'd lamp goes off.
Didn't see a posting for rims anywhere so I'm going to ask you guys. Anyone know of a good company that makes nice off-road rims for the 2005 Tacoma 4x4's? I've tried looking around but nothings working out. In addition I was looking at the Fabtech lift system. Has anyone tried it out or has had any experience with the company? Which lift system is better? The one with blocks for the rear or the leaf system? Any recommendations would help. Thanks.
Thanks msibille. Yeah, I did my first oil change at 25oo miles. Replaced the filter and put in Mobil 1 SuperSyn. Gas mileage went up about 1.75 miles to the gallon. Mobil 1 is the way to go after break in.
Also, did you hear crash rating on this truck is rated excellent at 40mph head on.
The specific instructions are to insert the key, (don't turn it yet), hold the odometer/trip button down, turn the key to "on", this isn't actually starting it, just in the "on" position.
You'll see 5 dashes appear on the odometer, and they will go down, 4,3,2,1,0, and then display 000000. You can then let go of the odometer/trip button.
You should do this every time you change the oil. I think the manual says that it flashes at you when it reaches 4,??? miles, then stays on once you pass 5,000.
I also put Mobil 1 in mine, with a PureONE oil filter from Pepboys. The nice paint job on the filter makes the engine compartment look really nice! If you like blue, that is! :shades:
I just complete my first oil change 3,500 miles decided to put in mobil 1, after talking with my uncle who bought a 05 C6 Corvette (fast and smooth) So I drained the oil as much as I could and took off the filter and there was still dirty (dinosaur oil) stuck in the tubes that come up to the filter. Is there a way to remove this. I tried everything. Anyone else notice this when they changed the oil? By the way the Mobil 1 quieted the engine ticks down a bit. Also put on Westin's new Bull Bar (comes with a free light kit) and Platinum Black powdercoat over stainless step rails, they are guaranteed against rust for the life of the car and only cost $300 each. Much better than the Manik ones Toyota rips you off for. :shades:
Megamole - You have any pics of those step rails? I'm considering the Westin Signature Series for price reasons (got wayy to many mods planned to spend almost $400 on tube steps). I haven't seen any pics of any of the Westin bars actually on an 05 so any pics you have would be great.
Yeah, that seems to be normal for most cars and trucks these days. I think it is for emission reasons that they idle up like that. Probably to warm up the cat as fast as possible. (just my guess as to why, but it is normal).
"nstg8r" - I don't think many posters on this forum are into that particular "mod". I placed 2-separate postings last week requesting advice on the pros and cons of the 2-types of lifts, and the only response I was able to get was from some helpful and good-natured soul trying to talk me out of getting a lift entirely. Regarding rims/wheels, I just ordered the Ivan Stewart TRD wheels (16x8), which were made originally for the Ivan Stewart edition Tundra that came out a couple of years back. They seem pretty killer, and allow me to trick out my truck, while keeping it OEM TRD. I got them on ebay for $750.00 including shipping. I know a guy that owns a wheel store here in San Diego, and he couldn't get them for me at that price, so I went ahead and bought them. Good luck!
No need to sweat the residual used oil when you make an oil change. There will be used oil adhering to every wetted surface in the engine (e.g. oil pan, cylinder walls, crank journals, lube channels, valve stems, etc.) -and that's a good thing- otherwise your engine would start up DRY-that would not be a good thing. The goal of the oil change is to remove most of the contaminated and sheared oil, you won't get it all out short of a tear-down, which then requires applying lube during reassembly to avoid a dry start. Most things that you might try to remove residual oil will cause more harm than good, so just block it out of your mind. (sort of like that temptation to run the brush over the wet varnish one last time.... and then you leave those big brush marks. Just got to discipline yourself.) By changing the oil at the appropriate time, the amount of contaminants in the oil as a whole after the change is very diluted.
I finally used 93 octane, and kept my 05 DCSB 4x4 auto under 65 miles an hour and I did get 22 mpg right on the money. I appreciate the help on getting this mileage out of the truck.
Maybe it is a Canada thing. Was at my dealership (Sask) on the weekend and was told Aug or Sept for a DC 4x4 with factory tow..... nutbar. My sales guy was quite candid about the fact that Yota really mis-judged the popularity of this model. They are swimming in Tundras but Taco's are nowhere to be seen. They will certainly be angering people who traditionally buy vehicles in the spring in anticipation of using them for summer travelling etc..... it's even made me go back and look a the Dakota's again (ouch).
nstg8r andd hammaa. Well, I put on a spacer as I figured it wouldn't change the spring rates as an AAL probably would. For wheels, I installed Pro Comp Xtreme Alloy series 1079 on 285/75-16 (32.78"X11.2") tires. It looks really good IMO. It doesn't feel unstable AT ALL in turns. The slightly stiffer front suspension and wider wheels compensate for the added height. Good Luck
The 19/26 is miles per CANADIAN Gallon, and as for the mileage, it is now on tack at 26 mpg on the highway as of Sun April17. They changed the comp and fuel management system, and had me go back to 265x70x16, I had switched to 2657516, when it was new, and Toyota blaims the poor mileage on the tires....I do not no, but it is working great now. The only prob I have now is a vibration in the drive line at 120kms, and waiting for the trailer wiring, they cannot seem to find a 7 pin harness, even though my truck is wired for it in the front...???? As for the lease, I was prom missed my equity would be there in Nov 2004, when they launched the new Tacoma, and it wasn't, I got NOTHING out of my 2004 Tundra, just dropped it off, and walked away,$6000.00 disappeared. Bought today. Desert Sand Mica. Fremont, CA. Doesn't look near as good as DC, or the fancy ones, but sure is a significant upgrade over my 2001 Reg Cab 4x2 Base 5spd!! This engine works at very low RPM's This from Vvti? The steering wheel seems to be just slightly cocked to the left. If I let go I go straight, so will wait on that. Get a wax/sealant and fabric spay tomorrow. Walk-in price ($139.99), not Toyota package from the finance salesman. I run two vehicles, 2001 Camry and the just-traded 2001 4x2 Base, both manuals. Am hoping this new Base model will work well with an Auto. Looks to be plenty of power to spare, time will tell. Been up for over 24hrs, gonna go look at it once more before going to bed. bearcrkrd.....
Glad to hear that the info worked out for you. How many miles do you have on your tacoma? I didn't get the higher mileage I had stated until I got around the 2800-3000 mile mark. The mpg I stated getting earlier (24.56 & a bunch of times 23) are all straight highway driving. When I change from city & highway combined roughly 50/50 I get around 18mpg which is not bad for a truck.

I think I'll call a few dealerships in my surrounding area tomorrow and see if they all give me the same delivery date. It may just be a Canada thing.
