I had the Cross Terrains on my '03 Honda Pilot and will put them on the '05 Tacoma when the BFG's go away. Without a doubt they are worth the extra money. I tried Bridgestones and Yokahamas for a couple of days then finally found the Michies...I have a very understanding tire dealer...they are far superior! I actually did some 4-wheeling in the Pilot and they worked great. Very quiet on the pavement. I ran them for about 10 months and 12000 miles and lost 2-3/32's of tread all the way around.

Well I know there's been a bit of back & forth on this. I'll add my two cents. I bought a 3-piece loading ramp system (Oxlite) so I could ride my Suzuki V-strom up onto the bed of my Access Cab.

I estimated (give or take 25 lbs.) that the combined weight of me and the bike was about 680 lbs. I rode up an 8' center ramp, and balanced me feet on two side ramps. So, about 90% of the weight was on the center of the tailgate (probably the weakest point). I did this twice and there was no damage to the tailgate. The bike has a pretty long wheelbase, and the rear tire sits squarely on the joint between the bed and the tailgate so I don't have the option of loading or carrying the bike without the tailgate.

I can't say for sure exactly how much weight was actually on the tailgate at any one time, but it was probably upwards of 400 lbs. So, my anecdotal conclusion is that, at least for purposes of rolling up some substantial weight, it shouldn't be problem. Still, I don't think I'd want 400 lbs bouncing up and down on the tailgate all day.
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
Not to sound like a broken record here people but please don't have anything on your tailgate more than 200pds for an extended period of time. I bent mine with my snowmobile and it will really piss you off. Toyota won't acknowledge that this is a manufacturers defect but trust me, when I took my gate apart there is no support in the middle. I have never heard of past Toyota trucks having gates like this. I only keep bringing up what happened to me as after seeing (white05taco's) post I would hate for someone to bend their tailgate like I did. It sucks and can be expensive to correct.

To make the fog lights come on whenever you want, check out message # 3654 and 3532. Here's a pic of how I did it. Easy.

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Now all you need to do is rewire the dash switch to a switch on the floor. If you pop out that fold down door by your left knee you can access the back of the switches easier.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Has anybody tried to take the tailgate apart and add some support inside it? I might look into this before any damage is done.
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
When mine was apart it was suggested to weld some supports inside but because of the welds you would have to repaint the outside. How about I take some pics of my gate to show everyone the bend and my own inexpensive way to correct it.

Does anyone know how to remove the name plates on the 05 tacoma (toyota, TRD, etc.etc.) I was thinking about having the California look with no name plates on the truck. Want to remove them from the front doors and tailgate.
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
Diamond plate welded to the inside face of the gate, replacing the plastic sheet, would make things super strong. No need to mess with the framing. Think "monocoque", ala airplanes, F1, and Indy cars.

For those of you considering the Wade hood protector/bug deflector. I've noticed a fairly significant difference as far the amount of bug splattered on my windshield. Plus easily installed. I’d definitely recommend it.

Also, i have some picks of the stainless steel tip i had installed when i had the Flowmaster installed (sorry, haven't crawled under to take shots yet)

Email me if interesting in seeing any of them

One other thing that I found was that on the decals, there is a happy medium on how much heat to apply. I ultimely found out that the Arizona sun on my black paint turned out the right temperature...Good luck.....

I just ordered an cover called an Undercover. It's made of ABS (black), fits on top of the rail caps and bolts into the new Tacoma Tracking system -- no drilling. It fits on top of the caps -- you don't have to remove anything to use this cover. It comes with two locks, and two pressure lifts -- weighs about 45 pounds or so. I don't mind the black ABS finish as a contrast on my White 4-door pickup.

take a look on the internet -- it's called an undercover. I paid about $525 with free shipping to a business address.

Has anyone had their cruise control looked at by the dealer, and fixed?

I mentioned this several months ago, but didn't get many responses, except a couple people that noticed the same thing.

During normal highway driving, using cruise control, going up a slight (and I mean slight) hill, the control would drop sometimes TWO gears to keep the speed constant. I found this very annoying, and have since then, not used the CC. (I'm not exaggerating either, my wife looked over at me one time when it did it, and was like, what the heck are you doing???)

Anyway, it seems like it should be an easy adjustment, since I'm sure the CC is computer controlled.
    :confuse:
  • ronc2ronc2 Member Posts: 8
Mine did the same thing. They did spray stuff on it a couple of weeks ago and now it is back. I have torn the clutch all apart and still have not been able to identify the noise. I am going to have to take it back to the shop next week. If you find out anything let us know....
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
What you may want to try is while the Cruise is engaged, drop out of overdrive. This should bring the transmission down to 4th gear and eliminate the gear hunting.

    Hope this helps.

You're a happy camper now ratskins!
I've been waiting patiently :shades: for my new truck for almost 2 months; have been told that it should arrive by the end-of-the-month -or- better yet, "soon." (I love that one BTW)
-Guess that gives my dealer (in Vermont) 2 days before I'm not so patient anymore -grumble. (alas, it'll be worth the wait - but am beginning to have a lot of questions about if I'm being told the whole truth) -Anyone else smell something? I'll bet that they traded my truck for a hybrid or something and some "eco-friendly person is laughing all the way to the "plug" - at my expense!

You'd think that Toyota would want their dealers to look like they know what they're talking about and give their customers honest delivery dates. I was told that it should take 10-15 days by rail from Freemont, CA. Then possibly 6-8 days in a holding tank in Ma... sort of curious about why it takes so long to make the final 100miles? FYI: my Double Cab, Sport, Long Bed was shipped on June 5th - guess I'll believe it when I'm sitting behind the wheel.

I think it was pretty clever that you (ratskins) "double booked" the truck you wanted... good advice to those who are in the same "waiting" situation that I'm currently in... bet you got a good deal too!

I've enjoyed all of the posts very much, and have learned a lot - really liked the hepa-cab filter trick... only if I had a truck to do it on.

I hope to keep you all posted... any positive feedback about long waits would certainly be appreciated.

I live in San Diego, so it doesn't get much more "California" than here...and my Taco has stickers (factory installed) all over it...
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
True, but I shouldn't have to sacrifice gas mileage just because of a poor design on the cruise control. That will get horrible mileage, at 65+ MPH. I'm thinking of taking it in pretty soon, as I need to get the tires rotated anyway, and have them see if they can hunt down this ticking noise that I hear from the driver's side rear seat. Wonder how long that will take them... It seems to be either in the seat, or under the seat, as it stops if anyone is sitting in the back of the truck...go figure.

BTW, I like the looks of that Undercover cover. It looks like it attaches to the rail system for the shocks, but what about the front part of it, does it use the rail as well?
  • pfaffpfaff Member Posts: 12
Sorry for the late reply. I took delivery of my new Tacoma on June 9. About eight hours later I was in the hospital taking delivery of my new baby son. What a day! Needless to say, I've been too busy for the past couple of weeks to spend much time with my new Tacoma.

Now I'm back here to report that after only two weeks and 320 kilometers, I'm experiencing a problem with the antilock brake system. Two days ago I noticed the brake and ABS warning lights were on. I got the truck in for service today. I haven't picked it up yet but they told my wife on the phone something about "dirt on the ABS sensor wires". Huh? How friggin often is that going to be a problem? Geeze. They also said that they aren't certain that they've fixed the problem. Great. First I have to wait 14 weeks to get the vehicle, then I have to take it in for ABS service after only 320 km. I smell lemons.

Has anyone removed the mudflaps from their 4wd truck? I ripped the front driver's side flap off today at work. Anyone interested in selling theirs?

"cedosada" - They're yours if we can agree on the price. I've been trying to get a post out to you, but it got deleted w/out warning. :( I'm not sure how to get you my information w/out big brother deleting it for my own safety :confuse: , but let's figure this out. I'm going to make my e-mail address public on my profile, and we can try it that way. I look forward to hearing from you soon ;) . Thanks!!

Just picked up a RED 05 tacoma quad cab 4x4 with the TRD sport package.
Got truck for UNDER invoice, YUP UNDER invoice.
NO complaints so far, very happy with the dealership where I bought it. :)

I have taken this up with my dealer with in the first month of owning my double cab. I was told thats the way 5 speed auto shift on the highway. I said it was crap, they said there was no fix but if one came available they would contact me and fix it. Haven't really used cc to much since. But when I do it doesn't seem as touchy as when it was new. hope this helps.

    Hey All,
I have a DC with the off road package. I noticed the switch for the locking differential is right next to the fog lamp switch. I was wondering..... If I'm cruising down the interstste at 70 mph and reach over to hit the fog lamps and hit the differential button by mistak, what happens? I've checked the manual, but it doesn't say anything about the button being deactivated unless you're in 4LOW. Does anybody know the answer? I and imaging either killing myself or leaving the tranny in bits on the freeway.

    Thanks!

Had an ' 04 Taco before I got the 2005..Removed the TRD stickers( my buddie said "get rid of those") Used a blow dryer( keep on low) Sticker peeled right off. Big mistake!! Truck never looked right to me..I guess in Cali or maybe southern states(or "tuner trucks") that might be the look, but i live in Pa. I'm keepin" This one a good old fashioned 4x4!! I wouldn't even think 'bout removing the chrome name plates!!! But hey, Whatever blows ur dress up!! It's all good!!! Good Luck!

i just returned from a trip and i used cc, and doesnt seem to be that sensitive with my but when i going up a hill, i take it out of overdrive to advoid from constanly shifting, i have 7000 miles now so its broken in by now.
  • bigandybigandy Member Posts: 70
I ripped off my left rear when I backed into a rock in Death Valley. As I backed up, the rock pushed the mud flap into the lower part of the rear tire and a little gas was all that was needed to tear it straight down and off. Shredded the little plastic rivets that work with three bolts to hold it in place. The $93 price tag on a new replacement means I'm going to try to live with some scratches and widened attachment holes on the old one. This never happened with my '99. Will try to be more careful.

Why would a dealer sell a taco for under invoice ?
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
The truck will beep at you until you push the button again to turn the system off. It will not engage unless it's in 4WDLo.

I've had the same problem including the weird looks from the Mrs. In addition I have an intermittent wheel mounted, on-off switch. I have an appointment at the dealer the end of this week and will let you know what they say.
  • imatroutimatrout Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the answers. That's what I thought but ccouldn't find it documented anywhere!
  • stephgstephg Member Posts: 17
my dealer's line was: "we're definitely getting closer to the delivery date"... really no help at all :)

I don't think the dealers know the exact dates. My DC LB sport 4X4 (indigo ink) was built on May 16, and finally got to the dealer yesterday. i spoke to him Monday and he didn't know when it would come. When I bought Honda's the dealer always had an exact date, and knew that new vehicles came in on Tuesdays. I don't know if other Toyota models are the same, but I suspect this is specific to Tacomas, due to high demand. i know that I have better luck/info speaking with the finance guy than with my sales guy. Needless to say, I won't deal with him anymore. I hope Toyota sends me a customer satisfaction survey...
  • geogeckogeogecko Member Posts: 225
Well, it is crap if they say that is the way a 5 speed auto shifts. Why then, does my wife's Acura TSX not do it? Her car usually stays in 5th unless it's a massive hill (and it's a freaking 4 banger).

What do you mean about an intermittent wheel mounted, on-off switch?

Yes, please let us know what you find out from the dealer. Would be interesting if anyone else has had the problem fixed.

Also, another funny thing I have noticed several times upon starting the truck. When the A/C is already on, low speed on the fan, fresh air, just after starting (within probably 5 seconds), if I switch to recycled air, or sometimes, change from low to medium air, I hear about 2 seconds worth of rapid clicking. Almost sounds like a relay clicking, or something making contact with a fan. I seemed to notice it more when I had the door open. It's happened about 5-6 times that I recall hearing it.

I'll have to try the CC again, since I haven't used it since it was brand new. Maybe the problem has gone away. This weekend will tell.

Has anyone tried to remove the huge yellow warning stickers on the sun visors? They are obnoxiously large, and I think an eyesore. I tried to peel them off with my fingernail, but it seems like they are almost welded onto the plastic. I can't even get a corner edge to start to peel back. Maybe there is some technique I'm missing. I'm thinking about hitting it with a hair dryer for a minute or so to see if that softens the glue.

Has anyone had success removing the stickers?

    hello,

would anyone have any recommendations as to when picking up your new truck, what to look for so the dealer won't try and pull a fast one on me?
This will be the first vehicle I have ever bought brand new off the lot so I want to make sure everything goes as smooth as possible.

I ordered last week and delivery is set for the end of August
    -2005
    -TRD Offroad package
    -4X4 Access cab
    -Auto tranny w/tow package
    -black

    $$35,000 CDN (NORTH BAY)

secondly would anyone like to offer any tips on enhancing performance such as fuel economy, horse-power???
    -i.e. muffler, air-intake filter, etc.

    thanks

    appreciate any info given

I would HIGHLY recommend you try this if you're having trouble with the cruise over-shifting on certain hills. Move the shift lever from "D" to "4" to take it out of overdrive. I have tried this on several of the new ones in stock and it works. The cruise still keeps the speed constant, but the truck doesn't shift from 5-3-5-3 over and over on larger hills.

You need to check the window sticker and any documentation that shows the price of your vehicle to make sure there aren't any unexpected items added by the distributor or the dealer. These are paint and fabric protector, VIN etching, pin stripes, optional alarm, etc.. You may want these items and I haven't had much luck avoiding them but make sure that you know what you are paying for.

Make sure they don't try to lower the value of your trade-in compared to the price you discussed while you were shopping.

At some point your salesman will take you to the Finance and Insurance (F&I) representative and then disappear. The F&I rep will pressure you to buy an extended warranty. They may even bring in a manager to try to scare you into buying the warranty. Even if you intend to buy one, don't accept their first price. They will come off of the price significantly. You may even be pressured to put minimal funds down in order to increase finance fees and to keep you upside-down on your loan balance.

At every step in the process, pay close attention to every number and ask all the questions you want. They are much more interested in taking your money than in fairness and accuracy.

Of the last six vehicles that I have bought, I can only think of one where the dealer didn't annoy me and try to take advantage of me during the paperwork process. At the very minimum, they have shown no respect for the value of my time. This process has typically taken two hours, totally unnecessary.

As I recall, the only positive experience I had was for my wife's car. She went shopping by herself and found what she wanted. She told the salesman that I wasn't committed to buying a car and I was too busy to negotiate with them so they better just put the best deal on paper and fax it to me. The deal was good so I told them I had a few minutes on a Saturday morning to drop-off a check and sign the paperwork if everything was ready, otherwise no deal. It worked.

I would have to agree moving from "D" to "4". I just picked up my DC Prerunner OffRoad #2 and noticed that it tachs somewhere around 1500 rpm on the highway which is very low. That is probably the reason why it downshifts more frequently than a car when encountering hills. The low rpms is probably the same reason we all get to enjoy good gas mileage on the highway as compared to other trucks. If I were to choose between good highway mileage or the annoying downshifting while in CC, I'd opt for the gas mileage.
    Just my 2 cents.
  • ratskinsratskins Member Posts: 7
that's good to know. but i wouldn't go so far as to say that the truck is smart enough to not let you do anything to hurt it. if you are in 4wd low and you engage your rear locker at speeds higher than 5 mph (automatic) or 2 mph (manual) you can blow it out.

    so be careful.

I have a 2005 taco prerunner v6 auto sport package.

Just went to the dealer to have the engine pinging looked at. It has been pre-igniting for a while now. I have a K&N air filter and otherwise stock. Long story short.... We absolutely determined that the trucks computer cannot handle the change in flow that the K&N filter creates. I had to go back to using the stock air filter. The bottom line is the truck will probably have preignition under full throttle if intake or exhaust work is done.
  • bjw1bjw1 Member Posts: 152
that would make some sense being that the variable valve timing increases or decreases airflow depending on conditions, so it makes too much aiflow thus the problems, just my side, did not no much about the v v ti untill i got the taco.

The largest tires I was able to realistically fit onto my DC LB PreRunner TRD Sport w/out a lift were 265-75-R16's. They look pretty sweet with my new Toyota Tundra Ivan Stewart wheels!! :shades: I'll try and get some pics up eventually...
