I understand what you are talking about. It was a little hard on the way to work this morning to try your theory though, so I'll be sure and do it on the way home. Just from initial results though, I still believe it's dropping into 3rd, but I could be wrong.

I need to hit about 75MPH or so, before I'll know for sure what gear it's going into.

Meanwhile, it's time for my second oil change...10,000 miles already!

    Thanks, ronk44.

I finally ordered an Extang Tuff Tonno III from AutoAnything (for $198.95). I installed it in about 30 minutes and it looks great and is really waterproof from rain.

The clamps fit inside the rail system perfectly and the extra-thick weatherproof strips on the cab and tailgate sections of the frame keep the other two sections of the frame in the same plane.

For a "soft" cover, I HIGHLY recommend this model.

BTW, I tried to order a Lund tonneau, but it would not have been available from the manufacturer until August!

Thanks for the tip about the fogs - unfortunately I neglected to bend the contact out and just pushed a piece of wire in the slot...this resulted in the head lights coming on when the vehicle was started...of course I thought I must have connected something improperly so I re - connected the wire to one of the copper contacts on the relay to the fuse...this was a mistake as my truck will now not start ! I am wondering if I blew the relay for the fuel pump as it felt quite warm, even though I didnt go near it with the wire.?? I now realize that I should have bent out that contact from the relay to get the lights working the way you described. Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Undo everything you did, and make it back to stock, then check all your fuses, especially that 10 amp red one. There is also a fuse block under the dash, behind that drop down "pocket" by the drivers left knee.

Yeah, if you don't bend that relay blade out then you are connecting to two different sources at the same time.

Actually, I did some further research on the ToyPod and took it back to the auto stereo place. It turns out that I can control my ipod w/ the click wheel. The interface has different modes: control through car stereo, control through ipod, and control through stereo and ipod at same time.

So, I do believe that this is a great unit if you're looking to hook more than just your ipod since it has an additional auxiliary input.

Of course, it's also $100 more.

I recommend this for anyone who wants to use ipod + aux.

I am looking to purchase D Rings for the bed from Toyota. Has anyone else purchased and installed these? Are they the same as the D Rings near the tailgate? How easy are they to install? THANKS

I will be putting a toytec 3" lift on my access cab TRD off-road very soon. All that I need is to confirm a good wheel for a (hopefully) 33" tire. I only saw one other post (#3252) where the author used a ProComp 16x8 6-5.5 w/ 4" backspacing to fit a 32.8" x 11.2" tire (285/75R16 by my calculation). These rubbed the mudflaps where they bolted to the truck.

Are these the correct size rims to use? Are there better options? Are there cheap places or preferred manufacturers to buy these size alloy rims?

    Thanks in advance

I just bought a 2005 DBCab LB TRD Sport pkg#4/ 4x2. I was going through the little quick referrence guide to learn all the buttons. My package has "Limited Slip Differential" (LSD) then I noticed that the spot where the "Auto Limited Slip Differential" button was suppose to be was covered. Is this something I should worry about? Do I really have LSD? I tried calling Toyota Service and the dealership where I bought it and no one knew.

Thank you all for your help,
    Max

I undid everything and still no start - checked all the fuses and they looked good - then I started swaping relays(same to same) and still nothing...it just left on a flat bed for the dealer..hopefully the data recorder wont rat me out...I was thinking the fuel pump relay or fuse for the EFI...but everything looked good .. will have to wait and see...thankfully I have another car(my toy) which will have to get me through the next few days...the kicker is that I was scheduled to have my truck pin stripped tomorrow too...which I have been waiting for 2 weeks to do..

It appears that your truck like mine has full time LSD - the missing button is for the optional electronic or ASD...I would not worry as this was not an option on your truck..fulltime LSD is better than none at all - especially with 2WD on wet roads and such...sit back and enjoy the ride I have the same set up in 4WD - its a very nice ride either way

I ordered some extras from the dealership. They're the exact same as the ones that come on the truck. I think I paid about $30 for a pair. They are easy to install. I think they come with instructions though. The truck's manual also shows how to use them.

I have the same truck as you, w/a 3" Revtek lift. I purchased 17x9" Mickey Thompson Classic lock wheels and a set of 285-70-17 BFG Mud Terrains. The Rev Tek site states to use 15 or 16 x8" wheels. Mine were hitting the mud flaps pretty good sitting still so I pulled the flaps off (Hesistantly) and they were still coming in contact with the fender sitting still. I really don't believe the extra 1"wheel width will make much difference in hitting. I now have 265-70-17's on it and it is much better. Still some slight rubbing on the flaps(put them back on) cornering with bumps.Be careful with the wheels , as I was told not all previous year applications will work on the '05 because of larger calipers.Hope this helps....tnt67

Hello Folks, I was just wondering if I just killed my 5 Day old Pre-Runner Double Cab? (TRD off road package #1 ) I accidentally activated the manual Locking Rear Differential , thinking it was the fog light switch, and drove off for about 1/4 mile at a max of 45 mph. The sticker on the driver door states max of 5 mph, if my memory serves me correct? Whew, I hope she'll be alright. I'd hate to have a dead taco w/ 350 miles on it.

Does anyone know if the Toyota Platinum Extended warranty is returnable? Albeit a good deal, I hate the fact I felt so much pressure to buy that thing. I just hate finance managers..period.

    Thanks,

    Enjoy your tacos

thistle, do you live in the la area?

your situation sounds just like mine. don't believe that dealer. he only has his best interest in mind. he will hold onto you for 6 months if he has to, in order to maintain the rights to your money.

when i picked up my taco from ventura toyota, they told me that they were one of only two dealers in california who can get trucks as fast as they can. i obviously believed them because i had been preferenced with my home town santa barbara toyota and heard the same runaround that you are hearing for 5 months and they never got my truck. i asked the dealer at ventura toyota if they have connections that other dealerships didn't have. he said "no, we just put forth more effort to obtain the vehicle than other dealerships." and in regard to money, they gave me an $1,100 discount right off the bat. i didn't even need to negotiate with them, when everyone else told me i had to pay sticker price because of the high demand for the truck at this time.

if you don't mind the drive, talk to ventura toyota.

it's only 2 hours away from you and it will be worth a phone call and drive to pick up your new truck in less than 6 weeks guaranteed. they will get your truck within 6 weeks and most likely within 4 (like they did mine).

you haven nothing to lose. if you preference with them and someone else gets the truck first, they will refund your money. i already got my refunds from the other two dealers i preferenced with.

I beleive auto LSD is like a cheaper version of the full time LSD. Full time LSD is a mechanical limited slip differential or "positraction" as they used to call it while auto LSD cheats and uses braking on the slipping wheel to transfer force to the wheel with the most traction. Not 100% sure but this is what I get out of reading the reports http://www.toyotaoffroad.com/Articles/Toyota/2005_Tacoma/2005_Tacoma.htm

That is very interesting, I have a TRD off road DC with same LRD and wondered as I was driving it how many people might do the same thing as you did! I don't think this is a good design for activating this system, especially because they clearly warn you not to activate it only in certain situations. Hope everything is ok with yours.

I read on a post that there was a problem with certain model numbers, said you had to make sure you got the right one. Does anyone know what the right model number is for the Bullbar? I want to get one but want to be sure it's right and fits with no problem. I have the Taco Double Grande
  • boesman1boesman1 Member Posts: 47
Has anyone else noticed that the bulkhead storage in the DC seems to have some sort of accessories. Anyone know what type and where to find them, in addition the tie down system in the bed must have other types of accessories aside from the moveable tie downs... I have yet to see any thing pertaining to these areas and I have yet to figure out what the moveable plastic clip in the bulkhead is for?

" Are they the same as the D Rings near the tailgate? How easy are they to install? "

Yes. If you can drill a hole and turn a wrench, you're all set.

Toyota includes VERY complete instructions with genuine accessories.

"I accidentally activated the manual Locking Rear Differential , thinking it was the fog light switch, and drove off for about 1/4 mile at a max of 45 mph."

Did it drive funny? With a locked rear diff, it should have been very difficult to turn corners, especially tighter ones in parking lots. The inside tire will attempt to turn at the same speed as the outside, making the truck want to continue in a straight line.

You'll probably be fine, save for some extra tire wear. I think the limit has as much to do with safety as it does mechanics.

Some states have recision periods for contracts, mine is 3 days. Read the back of your paperwork, and check your state's consumer protection website. You could also visit the owner or GM of the dealership, and respectfully beg for mercy. Other than that, you've probably got an extended warranty.
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
The locking rear diff. is only activatable in Low 4WD. So even if you had the button pushed, it didn't engage. It will just flash the light on the dash to tell you to push the button again to turn it off. So no harm, no foul.

As for the service program, if it is a Toyota program, they give you 30days to change your mind. I would recommend you determine how long you plan on keeping the truck and if you do plan on keeping it for a while, the Toyota programs are some of the best values in the industry. (I have them on both my and my wife's cars as we do keep our cars for a while.)

    Hope this helps.

You can have your original warranty refunded if its been less than 30 days. The extended warranty can also be purchased any time before the 3 yr 36,000 mile warranty expires. The best deal I've seen is from Greenfield MA toyota dealer. Saw it posted on this site and called and confirmed. $875 for the 4x4 7 yr 100,000 mile 0 deductible and $800 for the 2x4.

I purchased my first truck in June, a 2005 Tacoma 4X2 Extra Cab in Impulse Red. I plan to purchase the following accessories:

    Tonneau Cover
    Bed Mat
    Door Sill Protectors
    Bug Deflector
    Bed Cargo Divider
    Toyota Seat Covers
    Tire Locks
    Spare Tire Lock

Are there any additional accessories that I should consider to increase safety and comfort?

Can you suggest any accessories that would add visual appeal?

    Thank you for your input.

I have the door sill protectors. I think I am going to pick up the bed mat from the dealer this weekend when I get my first oil change (only because the first one is free). I don't know if you have picked out a bug deflector yet but I have the Wade protector and I think it looks/works great. Everyone else that has it says it's great as well. Just my opinion.

I added the optional skid plate and exhaust tip. Looks a little better without going overboard. Whether the skid plate will actually protect the truck from hitting sand dunes or snow banks is yet to be seen. My PIAA Super Plasma headlights should be in tomorrow or friday.

The only other thing I might add to your list is all-weather floor mats. I guess it depends on what color carpet floor mats your truck came with. I have the light grey interior with matching floor mats and they look terrible already. It has only been two months and it's not even winter yet. :surprise:

I really like my black Toyota running boards. They give the truck a finished look, protect against rocks, help my wife get in, give me someplace to stand when washing the roof and back of the cab, and hold my beer when I'm outside the truck.

I prefer the boards over tube steps, but that's just my preference. The Toyota boards do not change the ground clearance and took about 15 minutes to install. My dealer matched online prices.

In my opinion, tonneau covers are a pain, but that's just me.

The rubber bed mat is a MUST HAVE. It keeps things from sliding around and can be tossed over lightweight cargo.

The rest of your choices are nice, but the only others I installed were the sill protectors and bug deflector.
  • mccullersmccullers Member Posts: 9
I got lucky, my truck came with the all weather floor mats.

Are you referring to the plastic tabs in the bulkhead pocket near the sunglass holder? I assumed they were to facilitate extension of the bulkhead door button in an effort to reach the button on the garage door opener I stuffed in there... worked like a champ for me.

If you're referring to another location on the truck, then I'm lost.

As for the track on the perimiter of the truck, I have seen a bike rack that Toyota parts sells (at $50/rack, 1 bike per rack, it's a bit steep). It provides a pin that runs parallel to the track that your front forks would mount onto, assuming your bike's front tire is removable.

First thank you for the messages concerning the wind/buzzing noise.
Especially "ask service manager John / Maroone".
I searched the Internet, and found Maroone Toyota, South Florida. And I spoke with the service manager John.
The problem and fix "Windshield needs to be resealed due to an air leak". No Technical Service Bulletin for this at this time.
I am going to make an appointment with my dealer to work on this! And I'll post a message if my problem is fixed.

    Lucky you!

I orderd mine 12 weeks ago, $500 above invoice . Got a call from the dealer (Team Toyota Highland IN) mid June that they had a build and ship date and it will be in June 27. I told him I was on vacation till July 4th and would pick it up on the 5th.

I called on the 5th and they said they are not getting it now???????

Think they got it and sold it at a better price while I was on vacation?

    Something is fishy here!!!

Don't blow the money on the toyota bike rack. I made my own with a $20 CDN bike (fork) mount, made by Sportrack (or others, Bovine bike racks...). All you need is two large washers, file off two sides (look at the toyota tie downs to get an idea of the shape) and rig a bolting system to get it into the sliding runner at the front of the bed. I used brake bolts from a road brake caliper (5mm allen) and it looks and works slick.

For an 05 Tacoma the Chrome Bull bar is 32-1600, the Black one is 32-1605.

BTW, if you get any black powder coated accessories from Westin, like the bull bar, put some good carnuba wax on it. It makes the dull finish look tons better.

Looks great! I was wondering about your tube steps, what brand are they? Do you have a side view pic you can post? I'm still trying to decide which ones look best...

    Tacoman

    FWIW

I just installed the factory DeeZee tube steps on my silver taco tonight and they look GREAT, installation was a breeze as it lined up perfectly. Mine were silver so it really was the best choice for me. I ordered mine from a Toyota Parts Dept just outside of Tacoma Washington. Also installed the exhaust tip and seat covers, the truck is real looker.

Actually I was referring to the storage area behind the second row seat in the DC. It appears as though there is some kind of optional clips for various storage, the one clip that came with the unit looks like it holds a flash light? Perhaps someone knows more about the options for storage in that area

Anyone know of new 2006 double cab, short bed features over the 2005 model? Sun roof? Or are the expected changes minor tweaks and therefore 2006 prices ought to be similar to 2005 models? Considering buying a 2005 double cab short bed and wondering if it's worth the wait for the 2006's. Thanks.

Hola! I installed my front d-rings today...a twenty-minute job...and I am slow. Most of my time was spent trying to convert mm to inches, as the install instructs uses mm's. FYI... 70-72 mm is 2 3/4 good old American inches. Just measure and drill, a pilot hole is good, as the composite bed gets real choppy when drilled. DO NOT worry about removing the wheel well liners, per the instructions, as you can easily reach the bed area to attach the backing hardware. That is probably just a ploy to give a Toy Tech more chargable time!!! This is a two person job unless you have really, really long arms...but easy...my wife and I got it done in no time. Good luck.
  • stephgstephg Member Posts: 17
you're both right. the hooks are for grocery bags, and the other clip-on piece is to hold a flashlight. i'm sure you can use them for other purposes, but that's what the owner's manual says. seems like they've put some thought into it.

after a little over 3 months' wait, i finally picked up my 05 Tacoma Sport DC long box 4X4 on June 30th. I love it! It's turning a lot of heads!

    a few things I noticed:
the bottom of the doors and bed have rockerguard on them. were the early builds like this as well, or is this a response to pitting?

although i expected to get 4 ply Dunlops with the truck (which i would have changed), it came with 6 ply Bridgestones (which i'll try, although with the truck's torque and my heavy foot, I'm not sure how long they'll last!). trucks like mine (same model) I've seen around here usually have Dunlops. So I don't know how they decide what goes on the wheels.

i got the running boards installed. i like the look and the protection they offer (i got them for protection). they are a little high to use effectively as a step, as was mentioned here before, but i find that if you place your left foot as far forward as you can on the running board as you get in, it is much easier. i still find it awkward to get out though.

the Toyota bug deflector looks good. it protects the hood, but doesn't do much for keeping bugs off the windshield. If you have one installed, check two things: on the ends, make sure that there's enough clearance between the deflector and the fender/hood so that it won't touch during hwy driving. i added an extra clear stick-on spacer on one side. also, on both sides of the grill, where the deflector comes out from under the hood, check to make sure that it doesn't touch the grill. I had to file mine down a little.

What's the deal with downhill assist, hill start assist and VSA? what's standard and what's optional? I think VSA is optional (and perhaps not on 4X4s) and I don't have the indicator light in the gauges, so I don't think i have it. But what about the two others? Are they US options and not available in Canada? I can't seem to find the info. also, i'm assuming that limited slip differential is the standard diff.

the 5-speed auto tranny is very smooth, and shifting from 5 to 4 on the hwy makes passing easier than stomping on the accelerator. the manual says to drive in 5, but for in town use, i find 4 works better.

I scotchgarded the carpets and seats last night, and I'm getting it oil-sprayed and liquid glassed in a few weeks. i'll post some pictures when i get a chance.

i was thinking of putting a lift kit on my new tacoma. i see that most of them are just spacers to put in the front and rear. i was wondering if the front spacer would make the cv joints in the front wear faster because of the more extreme angle put on them. i was also wondering if puting a lift kit on voids the warrenty in any way.

    Ray
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Typically, any modifications you make will void the warranty on any affected parts. So for a lift that would be the suspension, drive axles, and related components.

Check with your dealer to confirm before though to make sure.

You need to get into an awkward position, but if you look under your dash and push on the clutch with your hand, you will see a white plastic ring rotating around a short, tiny rod. It is located a little above a spring. I put some grease (cam lube) in the area where the plastic ring rotates around the short rod. I still get a little noise from the clutch but has improved significantly.
  • stephgstephg Member Posts: 17
If you order one now, you'll be getting a 2006. I think it will be fairly difficult to find that model on the lot. Most dealers I spoke with could only get half of all the Tacoma's they wanted, and over 80% were pre-sold.
  • tacoman05tacoman05 Member Posts: 37
Thanks, I've been looking at the DeeZee steps.Do you have a pic you can post?
  • nepropneprop Member Posts: 41
Thanks Stephg. I'm in the Boston area and the dealers seem to have a good inventory although I haven't spoken to any about my exact configuration. If there's a waiting list in general, then the likely best pricing will be what Edmunds.com suggests and not much more. We'll see.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Mine are Westin Oval Tube steps. I like them because they are made from extruded aluminum and won't rust. The install was easy. You just use all of the stock threaded bolt holes. Very solid mounting. I have more pics in the "Tacoma Pictures" forum.
