thanks jojr and bjw1, I appreciate the input- I have about 1400 miles on mine. It just seemed that racing a cold engine would not be such a good idea when first starting up, but if that's normal so be it.......... thanks again!

Always something- never happywith the stock item I guess.
My 2005 2WD Taco (4cyl.) has the stock rear and I'm thinking that come wintertime, a limited slip/positraction would come in real handy. A friend tells me that for $300 bucks or so, a tranny shop can mod it (or the dealer, for that matter). Has anyone experience in this area? Is this doable?
    Thanks,
    Tracon

I'm no expert but I would guess that if you mix tires you could 'potentially' wreck your transfer case when in 4WD. This would be because different tires have slightly different diameters (maybe from different expansion rates while spinning) even if they are the same size.

So it is not about traction, it is about the total front revolutions needing to exactly match the total rear revolutions.

I would also suggest to you that studded tires are a bit of a gimmick. What is more important is how soft the tire rubber is. The softer the tire is, the better it will grip in the snow and ice, but of course the tire will wear out much much faster.

I would also suggest getting a set of good quality chains for the rear if you are going to get into deep snow.

Another thing to try is to air down your tires when you need more traction. Doing this allows the tire to have a larger area of contact with the surface.

How did you get the fog lights to run anytime you want, via the dash switch?

I have the exact same problem. It sounds horrible and is on my list of things to talk to the dealer about. Anybody got any technical info about how to deal with this?

    >actually the plugs are to be changed every 30k miles according to the "manual" <>

My mistake. But you still need to quit driving so much!! ;)

Yep, I get what sounds to be a metalic tinny rattle, when I first hit the starter and the engine turns over. Then it goes right away and the engine comes up to speed.

Am going to take it to the dealer and just have it documented. Only seems to do it after a longer sit, aka overnight. But I think I'll just go out and start and stop it a few times just to see what happens.

I bought a skid plate shortly after I picked up my truck. Where were the old ones rubbing? I'm guessing mine is the old style as it only uses the original 4 mounting points. I've seen no rubbing though.

One thing I noticed when I installed the piece. 2 of the 3 bolts that held on the original plate in place were cross treaded from the factory. I had to clean out all the threads and put everything together pretty slowly and carefully to make sure the new bolts did not do the same thing. Could this have been the problem with the original? It seems to me that a monkey fisted mechanic could easily screw this simple job if they were not careful.
  • johndeerejoejohndeerejoe Member Posts: 19
Yea mine rubbed the bumper at 80+. The dealer installed the skid plate with less than an half inch of clearance. After it started rubbing, I bent the skid plate out to about at inch of clearance. I haven't had any problems since, but would like to modify the skid plate so it cant hit the bumper if something light hits it. the new skid plate part same as old one except last digit is "1" has two allen head bolts with brackets behind the plate. This seems to be an easy modification to my existing skid plate if they offer the brackets. Glad to hear about the rattling. I'm guessing that you have the 4.0. I thought that the k&N air filter was harming my engine. I currently have over 16,000 with no major problems. Only the rear breaks squeak and the minor skid plate problem. I had the clang with the rear leaf springs but the dealer replaced them, so no more clanging going over bumps.

    Thanks for the description, Searay!

Based on your description, I know what the problem is. My front shackle extends beyond the c-brkt, therefore I only had maybe a 1" of clearance between the frame.

I stopped at Supersprings lastnight and Gerry swaped with shorter spings. Now the front shackle is inside the c-brkt and there is about 2" of clearance between the frame. Probelm solved! Thanks for your feedback!

I just got under the truck and reached up in there and turned the socket counter clockwise ( I think ), and pulled the bulb out. It was easy to get to the fog lamps. I didn't remove the skid plate or anything.

Use the Search button in this forum and type in "fog lights". I've posted info and a picture on how to do it.

I recently added some 110 VAC outlets to the interior of the cab. I used a 700 watt inverter and mounted an outlet in the front and one for the rear too. Check it out on page 3 of my album.

Oops, I should have said about the rattle on start up:

I have a regular cab, Prerunner, 4cyl, manual tranny. 2k miles.

I wonder if anyone has a shot of the new plate installed. Looks like mine must be an old one, I'll have to poke around and see if anything is touching. It sure feels pretty solid to me, I'm no offroader and don't wish to do so, but it looks like that thing could take a pretty hard hit from below anyhow. Anything from the front I'm wager would bend that puppy pretty quick.

I have a 05 Tacoma TRD V6 Manual and I am considering installing a cold air intake and am wondering if anyone has done the upgrade or looked into it.??
In addition what is the warrenty situation when you do so.
    thanks

Just got the first scratch on my new Taco. Was in a hurry and didn't back quite far enough into the garage. When the door closed, a bolt from the garage door put a scratch about 2 inches long right in the middle of the front bumper.

Anyway, I had the brilliant idea that the perfect way to cover it would be to mount a front license plate bracket and put some kind of vanity plate on. I assumed that such a bracket would be easy to find as there are states that require two plates, but apparently not. Couldn't find a thing doing an internet search.

Anyone (like in a two tag state) have any ideas??

UPS sells them at their store.

Nice ones, black or crome and you can personalize them with what ever you want on the top and bottom, I just bought one for someone as a gift and it really looks nice, going to get one for myself.

Does anyone know what the largest tire size you can put on the stock, 16 X 7 TRD rims?

The snow plow is a great idea, except for the fact that I live in Florida! :shades:

I'll give UPS a try, thanks for the suggestion.

has anyone put on chrome nerf bars on a 2005 Taco Access cab. I'm having trouble finding some other than directly from toyota
  • wanderer00wanderer00 Member Posts: 5
Cruiser Frames has a couple of license plate mounting brackets (look under "Hardware") and a pretty extensive selection of license plate frames.
  • tjyodertjyoder Member Posts: 22
Try searching for these web sites:

    TruckXpressions.com
    USTAW
    Truck Candy

They all offer 2005 tacoma nerf bars - I was looking for the double cab, but I asume they also offer the access cab version.
  • tjyodertjyoder Member Posts: 22
I thought you could get those anywhere - Walmart auto dept, pep boys, etc.
  • coldfootcoldfoot Member Posts: 49
Ive found a couple places that have cruise for the Tacoma. Only problem is they all have to be hard wired. The owners manual and my dealer says the warranty will be voided if any hard wiring is done.
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
I have the new skid plate. The dealer replaced the old one no questions asked. The problem with the old one is that it vibrates very noticably and loudly and ultimately hits the front bumper (mine had to be repainted). Mine vibrated to the point that the skid plate cracked (major safety issue). The new plate looks the same as the old one except it now has bracing bolted to the inside (side facing the engine). Much better design than the original. No problems so far and it has been about 4 months or so since I got the new one.

Nice job on the install. Very clean. I'll be doing something similar myself maybe this weekend when the dual batteries go in. Where did you get the inverter? I like the size of that one. How difficult was it to get the center console out? You have any type of write up on it?

Also, you know that you can make the stock outlets "hot' all the time right?
  • volleyvolley Member Posts: 298
    Check Ebay also.
  • ruskastudruskastud Member Posts: 34
Got mine yesterday in the mail (bought it on ebay). Looks to be a great quality part, not like the crappy generic stuff you get from Crutchfield. I haven't installed it yet, but I'm thinking of painting it to more closely match the dash. Either grey or silver, but I think it would look good as is too. It is textured very similar to the top of the dash.

Does anybody have any suggestions on interior car paint? The only thing I'm worried about is scratching it after I install it.

I'll post pics of the finished product.

    Thanks!

Yep. I was pretty surprised to see that the "standard" replacement (not even "severe duty") was 30K miles.

Then again, mine is 6 months old and has only 3500 miles, so I'll probably end up changing them due to boredom in a few years... ;)

Search the internet (including ebay) and find a price that you are comfortable with. Take a printout showing the nerf bars and the price to your Toyota dealer and ask the Parts Department supervisor if he/she would be willing to sell you the nerf bars for the same price that you found on the internet. This is how I ordered the following accessories from the dealer last week:

    Running boards
    Spare Tire Lock
    Door Sill Protectors
    Bed Mat
    Seat Covers
    Cargo Divider

Buying these items from the dealer at the internet prices saved me a lot of money off of the dealer prices and I didn't have to pay shipping and handling fees!

    Veronica :)

I got the inverter at Sears. AutoZone also carries the same brand, but I haven't seen the big one there. It seems pretty well built.

Here's a link with some more pictures and more info on how to remove the center console.

    Inverter Link

I figured there was a way to make the plugs "hot" all the time, but I haven't really taken a look at the wiring yet. What info do you have?

It 90 today but I'll try to think straight.... I've had 4 trucks and always had snow tires to go with it (Including my 05 4x4 DC sport). I'm in Upstate NY (lake effect snow country), Not sure where you live, if your not in real snowy area, may be able to get away with all-season. If you need to buy snow tires then get 4. No sense in going in halfway, jump in and enjoy the benefits of not sliding off the road with the all-season SUV soccer moms.

    1. Front tires steer and do most of the braking. Snows on the front too.

    2. With snows on all 4 you'll probably hardly ever need 4wd. But when you do, control is amazing.

    3. see point 1

    4. the studded vs. non-studed debate... Well I'm running 4 Blizzaks now. Those are the 'new' non-studded super soft compound tires. If I'm lucky they'll last 2-3 more seasons running only 4 months a year. They are sick on snow and good on ice. Stick like glue. Just get them off when snow season is done! Wont ever go back to studded tires.

I ran studs on previous trucks they work good too. But only advantange I noticed is maybe glare ice. In snow, hardpack, whatever Blizzaks just as good if not better cause of the soft compound. And they dont buzz on the dry pavement.

Thats my 2 cents, now back to roasting in the summer sun.

Anyone know if there will be any changes for the 2006 Tacoma? Mainly color options, sunroof available, and different package offerings...

I just put an iPod adapter in my 2005 Camry from Street Machine Systems (www.streetmachinefx.com) and it sounds great. I didn't know that I had the option of controlling it directly until Shan the owner of Stereo City Stores told me that I can control two different ways. So he switched over to the direct mode for me and I can see the display. I can search by artist and song title and all the features available on the iPod. It worked out great cause now I have control options. They're suppose to come out with some type of cradle but I don't know if I wanna wait or just buy another brand. But I'm definitely gonna get a sirius radio and just use the auxiliary input that's already on the adapter which makes it great that I don't have to go out and buy another one or have to pay for another installation:)

Thanks for the info and the link. I definitely plan to do this or a similiar mod.

as for the factory outlet, the mod basically requires pulling the relay controlling the outlets and installing a small plug to keep the relay closed ("on") at all times. It literally takes all of 10 minutes. I have the how to on my computer somewhere, I'll post it tmrw at lunch.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
OK. It's basically like the "fog-light on anytime" mod that I posted a few weeks ago. I should have thought of it sooner. I guess the relay is in the under-hood fuse box. I'll do that tomorrow.

Do you know what is the biggest tires I can put on my sport 4X4 ?
  • bro45usbro45us Member Posts: 36
I just got my second 05 coma last week. I had a 05 black 4X4 double cab long bed untill a careless driver turned in front of me and caused $9000 damage and the truck only had 4000 miles on it ! So I decided to trade it on a new one and I got a white TRD sport LB #4 and am I glad I did. I like it way better than the plain jane SR5. Am I wrong here....all the specs say 4X4 double cabs are the same height. I never put a tape measure on the trucks but just from getting in and out of both trucks I would have to say the sport sits 2 to 3 inches higher than my non- TRD 4X4 did.

    This gets me wondering...

Has Toyota EVER offered a sunroof in a pickup?

I can't say that I've ever seen one, but that dosen't mean it's never been a factory option.
  • wanderer00wanderer00 Member Posts: 5
You've got larger wheels/tires with your TRD sport package, right? ;)
  • ltmarltmar Member Posts: 45
My 1992 SR5 has a factory sunroof. It is a glass panel that pops up at the rear and can be removed. I will be purchasing an '05 or '06 and am really disappointed that I will be giving up that option.
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Back when they were Toyota "trucks" and before getting the name "Tacoma", the SR-5 model which was the top model had an avialable factory pop-up/removable glass sunroof with a removable sunshade. When they changed over to the Tacoma, the Limited Models in the extended cab models also had this option.

I orderd mine Tacoma 12 weeks ago, $500 above invoice . Got a call from the dealer (Team Toyota Highland IN) mid June that they had a build and ship date fronm Toyota and it will be in June 27. I told him I was on vacation till July 4th and would pick it up on the 5th.

I called on the 5th and the daler said they are not getting it now???????
    Toyota did not build it????

Think they got it and sold it at a better price while I was on vacation?

    Something is fishy here!!!
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    UPDATE

OK  I call 800 GO-TOYOTA they tell me they will have the Customer Relation Manger Call me. A Corporate Leasion.  (In fact a Dealer Pawn at the Dealership)

I catch him lying saying they mis-ordered a short bed instead of a long bed.  I asked if that truck was still on the lot, he said yes.  I then ask about is being the Sport PKG #4 that I ordered and he said it was not.

I tell him if that is the case, other then the color, it is not close to the truck I ordered. I can not except the explanation.  he say's that is all he can tell me.

So I call Toyota back and they refuse to confirm that the order was placed or shipped and that it is Toyota's final decision and they have no control over an independent dealer. So I ask for the supposed Corporate Leason's boss. To no surprise he does not work for corporate as they presented him. In fact he works for the dealer.

    What a bunch of crap!!!

You would think that Toyota would want to protect there reputation instead of just letting the dealer say Totoya is a fault for not shipping it,  after Toyota provided the dealer with a build date and ship date. (Great reputation to have as a manufacture)

I think Toyota should step up to the plate to resolve this, or at least protect their reputation with an explanation showing they are not a fault.

      What do you think?
  • aztechianaztechian Member Posts: 31
This was posted a while back. Looks like you could only realistically get a 10" in there. That may be the best place to put it too (while keeping it out of the way). I'm interested in doing this too in the future.

Also, does anyone know if the factory stereo has an external amp somewhere, or is it just built into the head unit? (I have the std single disc stereo).

    Thanks.
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
There's no external amp. I'm not sure about Tacos with the JBL system though.

what kind of paperwork are you holding? i put $1000.00 down and waited 6 weeks (holding a contract for a sale) on the fifth week we spoke and they couldn't deliver a prerunner sport pkg1. so they gave me sport pkg2, with some small extras at no addl' cost to me.... they'd rather make the deal than give up money.... your best resource is the salesman, he'll work for you, if you make a deal

I found that the bolt of the upper control arm is blocked by the fender lining while trying to replace the arm. Does anyone know the proper way to remove the bolt?
