My 2005 2WD Taco (4cyl.) has the stock rear and I'm thinking that come wintertime, a limited slip/positraction would come in real handy. A friend tells me that for $300 bucks or so, a tranny shop can mod it (or the dealer, for that matter). Has anyone experience in this area? Is this doable?
Thanks,
Tracon
So it is not about traction, it is about the total front revolutions needing to exactly match the total rear revolutions.
I would also suggest to you that studded tires are a bit of a gimmick. What is more important is how soft the tire rubber is. The softer the tire is, the better it will grip in the snow and ice, but of course the tire will wear out much much faster.
I would also suggest getting a set of good quality chains for the rear if you are going to get into deep snow.
Another thing to try is to air down your tires when you need more traction. Doing this allows the tire to have a larger area of contact with the surface.

My mistake. But you still need to quit driving so much!!
Am going to take it to the dealer and just have it documented. Only seems to do it after a longer sit, aka overnight. But I think I'll just go out and start and stop it a few times just to see what happens.
I bought a skid plate shortly after I picked up my truck. Where were the old ones rubbing? I'm guessing mine is the old style as it only uses the original 4 mounting points. I've seen no rubbing though.
One thing I noticed when I installed the piece. 2 of the 3 bolts that held on the original plate in place were cross treaded from the factory. I had to clean out all the threads and put everything together pretty slowly and carefully to make sure the new bolts did not do the same thing. Could this have been the problem with the original? It seems to me that a monkey fisted mechanic could easily screw this simple job if they were not careful.
Based on your description, I know what the problem is. My front shackle extends beyond the c-brkt, therefore I only had maybe a 1" of clearance between the frame.
I stopped at Supersprings lastnight and Gerry swaped with shorter spings. Now the front shackle is inside the c-brkt and there is about 2" of clearance between the frame. Probelm solved! Thanks for your feedback!

I have a regular cab, Prerunner, 4cyl, manual tranny. 2k miles.
I wonder if anyone has a shot of the new plate installed. Looks like mine must be an old one, I'll have to poke around and see if anything is touching. It sure feels pretty solid to me, I'm no offroader and don't wish to do so, but it looks like that thing could take a pretty hard hit from below anyhow. Anything from the front I'm wager would bend that puppy pretty quick.
In addition what is the warrenty situation when you do so.
thanks
Anyway, I had the brilliant idea that the perfect way to cover it would be to mount a front license plate bracket and put some kind of vanity plate on. I assumed that such a bracket would be easy to find as there are states that require two plates, but apparently not. Couldn't find a thing doing an internet search.
Anyone (like in a two tag state) have any ideas??
Nice ones, black or crome and you can personalize them with what ever you want on the top and bottom, I just bought one for someone as a gift and it really looks nice, going to get one for myself.

They all offer 2005 tacoma nerf bars - I was looking for the double cab, but I asume they also offer the access cab version.
Also, you know that you can make the stock outlets "hot' all the time right?
Does anybody have any suggestions on interior car paint? The only thing I'm worried about is scratching it after I install it.
I'll post pics of the finished product.
Thanks!
Then again, mine is 6 months old and has only 3500 miles, so I'll probably end up changing them due to boredom in a few years...

Buying these items from the dealer at the internet prices saved me a lot of money off of the dealer prices and I didn't have to pay shipping and handling fees!

Here's a link with some more pictures and more info on how to remove the center console.

I figured there was a way to make the plugs "hot" all the time, but I haven't really taken a look at the wiring yet. What info do you have?
1. Front tires steer and do most of the braking. Snows on the front too.
2. With snows on all 4 you'll probably hardly ever need 4wd. But when you do, control is amazing.
3. see point 1
4. the studded vs. non-studed debate... Well I'm running 4 Blizzaks now. Those are the 'new' non-studded super soft compound tires. If I'm lucky they'll last 2-3 more seasons running only 4 months a year. They are sick on snow and good on ice. Stick like glue. Just get them off when snow season is done! Wont ever go back to studded tires.
I ran studs on previous trucks they work good too. But only advantange I noticed is maybe glare ice. In snow, hardpack, whatever Blizzaks just as good if not better cause of the soft compound. And they dont buzz on the dry pavement.
Thats my 2 cents, now back to roasting in the summer sun.
as for the factory outlet, the mod basically requires pulling the relay controlling the outlets and installing a small plug to keep the relay closed ("on") at all times. It literally takes all of 10 minutes. I have the how to on my computer somewhere, I'll post it tmrw at lunch.
Has Toyota EVER offered a sunroof in a pickup?
I can't say that I've ever seen one, but that dosen't mean it's never been a factory option.
Ken
I called on the 5th and the daler said they are not getting it now???????
Toyota did not build it????
Think they got it and sold it at a better price while I was on vacation?
Something is fishy here!!!

UPDATE
OK I call 800 GO-TOYOTA they tell me they will have the Customer Relation Manger Call me. A Corporate Leasion. (In fact a Dealer Pawn at the Dealership)
I catch him lying saying they mis-ordered a short bed instead of a long bed. I asked if that truck was still on the lot, he said yes. I then ask about is being the Sport PKG #4 that I ordered and he said it was not.
I tell him if that is the case, other then the color, it is not close to the truck I ordered. I can not except the explanation. he say's that is all he can tell me.
So I call Toyota back and they refuse to confirm that the order was placed or shipped and that it is Toyota's final decision and they have no control over an independent dealer. So I ask for the supposed Corporate Leason's boss. To no surprise he does not work for corporate as they presented him. In fact he works for the dealer.
What a bunch of crap!!!
You would think that Toyota would want to protect there reputation instead of just letting the dealer say Totoya is a fault for not shipping it, after Toyota provided the dealer with a build date and ship date. (Great reputation to have as a manufacture)
I think Toyota should step up to the plate to resolve this, or at least protect their reputation with an explanation showing they are not a fault.
What do you think?

Also, does anyone know if the factory stereo has an external amp somewhere, or is it just built into the head unit? (I have the std single disc stereo).
Thanks.
