I estimated (give or take 25 lbs.) that the combined weight of me and the bike was about 680 lbs. I rode up an 8' center ramp, and balanced me feet on two side ramps. So, about 90% of the weight was on the center of the tailgate (probably the weakest point). I did this twice and there was no damage to the tailgate. The bike has a pretty long wheelbase, and the rear tire sits squarely on the joint between the bed and the tailgate so I don't have the option of loading or carrying the bike without the tailgate.
I can't say for sure exactly how much weight was actually on the tailgate at any one time, but it was probably upwards of 400 lbs. So, my anecdotal conclusion is that, at least for purposes of rolling up some substantial weight, it shouldn't be problem. Still, I don't think I'd want 400 lbs bouncing up and down on the tailgate all day.
Now all you need to do is rewire the dash switch to a switch on the floor. If you pop out that fold down door by your left knee you can access the back of the switches easier.
i'll pick them up. do i have first dibs?

Also, i have some picks of the stainless steel tip i had installed when i had the Flowmaster installed (sorry, haven't crawled under to take shots yet)
Email me if interesting in seeing any of them

take a look on the internet -- it's called an undercover. I paid about $525 with free shipping to a business address.

I mentioned this several months ago, but didn't get many responses, except a couple people that noticed the same thing.
During normal highway driving, using cruise control, going up a slight (and I mean slight) hill, the control would drop sometimes TWO gears to keep the speed constant. I found this very annoying, and have since then, not used the CC. (I'm not exaggerating either, my wife looked over at me one time when it did it, and was like, what the heck are you doing???)
Anyway, it seems like it should be an easy adjustment, since I'm sure the CC is computer controlled.
:confuse:
Hope this helps.

I've been waiting patiently :shades: for my new truck for almost 2 months; have been told that it should arrive by the end-of-the-month -or- better yet, "soon." (I love that one BTW)
-Guess that gives my dealer (in Vermont) 2 days before I'm not so patient anymore -grumble. (alas, it'll be worth the wait - but am beginning to have a lot of questions about if I'm being told the whole truth) -Anyone else smell something? I'll bet that they traded my truck for a hybrid or something and some "eco-friendly person is laughing all the way to the "plug" - at my expense!
You'd think that Toyota would want their dealers to look like they know what they're talking about and give their customers honest delivery dates. I was told that it should take 10-15 days by rail from Freemont, CA. Then possibly 6-8 days in a holding tank in Ma... sort of curious about why it takes so long to make the final 100miles? FYI: my Double Cab, Sport, Long Bed was shipped on June 5th - guess I'll believe it when I'm sitting behind the wheel.
I think it was pretty clever that you (ratskins) "double booked" the truck you wanted... good advice to those who are in the same "waiting" situation that I'm currently in... bet you got a good deal too!
I've enjoyed all of the posts very much, and have learned a lot - really liked the hepa-cab filter trick... only if I had a truck to do it on.
I hope to keep you all posted... any positive feedback about long waits would certainly be appreciated.
BTW, I like the looks of that Undercover cover. It looks like it attaches to the rail system for the shocks, but what about the front part of it, does it use the rail as well?
Now I'm back here to report that after only two weeks and 320 kilometers, I'm experiencing a problem with the antilock brake system. Two days ago I noticed the brake and ABS warning lights were on. I got the truck in for service today. I haven't picked it up yet but they told my wife on the phone something about "dirt on the ABS sensor wires". Huh? How friggin often is that going to be a problem? Geeze. They also said that they aren't certain that they've fixed the problem. Great. First I have to wait 14 weeks to get the vehicle, then I have to take it in for ABS service after only 320 km. I smell lemons.
Got truck for UNDER invoice, YUP UNDER invoice.
NO complaints so far, very happy with the dealership where I bought it.
I have a DC with the off road package. I noticed the switch for the locking differential is right next to the fog lamp switch. I was wondering..... If I'm cruising down the interstste at 70 mph and reach over to hit the fog lamps and hit the differential button by mistak, what happens? I've checked the manual, but it doesn't say anything about the button being deactivated unless you're in 4LOW. Does anybody know the answer? I and imaging either killing myself or leaving the tranny in bits on the freeway.
Thanks!
Ken
What did you trade, and how much did you get for it?
I don't think the dealers know the exact dates. My DC LB sport 4X4 (indigo ink) was built on May 16, and finally got to the dealer yesterday. i spoke to him Monday and he didn't know when it would come. When I bought Honda's the dealer always had an exact date, and knew that new vehicles came in on Tuesdays. I don't know if other Toyota models are the same, but I suspect this is specific to Tacomas, due to high demand. i know that I have better luck/info speaking with the finance guy than with my sales guy. Needless to say, I won't deal with him anymore. I hope Toyota sends me a customer satisfaction survey...
What do you mean about an intermittent wheel mounted, on-off switch?
Yes, please let us know what you find out from the dealer. Would be interesting if anyone else has had the problem fixed.
Also, another funny thing I have noticed several times upon starting the truck. When the A/C is already on, low speed on the fan, fresh air, just after starting (within probably 5 seconds), if I switch to recycled air, or sometimes, change from low to medium air, I hear about 2 seconds worth of rapid clicking. Almost sounds like a relay clicking, or something making contact with a fan. I seemed to notice it more when I had the door open. It's happened about 5-6 times that I recall hearing it.
I'll have to try the CC again, since I haven't used it since it was brand new. Maybe the problem has gone away. This weekend will tell.
Has anyone had success removing the stickers?
would anyone have any recommendations as to when picking up your new truck, what to look for so the dealer won't try and pull a fast one on me?
This will be the first vehicle I have ever bought brand new off the lot so I want to make sure everything goes as smooth as possible.
I ordered last week and delivery is set for the end of August
-2005
-TRD Offroad package
-4X4 Access cab
-Auto tranny w/tow package
-black
$$35,000 CDN (NORTH BAY)
secondly would anyone like to offer any tips on enhancing performance such as fuel economy, horse-power???
-i.e. muffler, air-intake filter, etc.
thanks
appreciate any info given
Ken
Make sure they don't try to lower the value of your trade-in compared to the price you discussed while you were shopping.
At some point your salesman will take you to the Finance and Insurance (F&I) representative and then disappear. The F&I rep will pressure you to buy an extended warranty. They may even bring in a manager to try to scare you into buying the warranty. Even if you intend to buy one, don't accept their first price. They will come off of the price significantly. You may even be pressured to put minimal funds down in order to increase finance fees and to keep you upside-down on your loan balance.
At every step in the process, pay close attention to every number and ask all the questions you want. They are much more interested in taking your money than in fairness and accuracy.
Of the last six vehicles that I have bought, I can only think of one where the dealer didn't annoy me and try to take advantage of me during the paperwork process. At the very minimum, they have shown no respect for the value of my time. This process has typically taken two hours, totally unnecessary.
As I recall, the only positive experience I had was for my wife's car. She went shopping by herself and found what she wanted. She told the salesman that I wasn't committed to buying a car and I was too busy to negotiate with them so they better just put the best deal on paper and fax it to me. The deal was good so I told them I had a few minutes on a Saturday morning to drop-off a check and sign the paperwork if everything was ready, otherwise no deal. It worked.
Just my 2 cents.
so be careful.
But will try to load pics shortly on my bent tailgate and my TIM THE TOOL MAN fix up job !
Just went to the dealer to have the engine pinging looked at. It has been pre-igniting for a while now. I have a K&N air filter and otherwise stock. Long story short.... We absolutely determined that the trucks computer cannot handle the change in flow that the K&N filter creates. I had to go back to using the stock air filter. The bottom line is the truck will probably have preignition under full throttle if intake or exhaust work is done.
Is there a place to read about the taco's eng and the vvti in specific?
would like to know the tech side of it and what make it go and do what it does.
