    Hi,

We recently moved to the bay area and I was going to buy a CIVIC hybrid about three months ago, but all the dealers were asking 2K over MSRP.

This was a joke to us since we had just bought a fully loaded Pilot with NAV for 26.4K in New England during the year end clearance -- about 7K off MSRP after incentives. The hybrid CIVIC with NAV would be almost the same PRICE -- no way!

So now we are visiting relatives in Dallas for a few weeks and had driven the Pilot here. While it was in for an oil change at the local Honda dealer, I test drive a CIVIC hybrid and the guy offered me one with NAV for 500 off of MSRP without even asking for a deal. After talking some more, thet will sell one off the lot at invoice (or 1700 - 2K off of MSRP)

So then I call some of the bay area dealers and am getting prices on the 2007 Hybrid/Nav for 1K - 1.5K off MSRP after telling them about my Texas options. Wow what a change from a few months ago!!!

The TX dealer said that Honda shipped a ton of Hybrids to the US in December, that's why they all have a lot in stock.

Also, I think there are another 10,000 HOV stickers now available in CA for HOV use thanks to the Governator. So unless I'm missing something, it's a good time to do a deal, right???

;) It seems like only yesterday when my dealership was getting about 2-4 hybrids every other week and I was having to wake up at 4am and drive down to our drop off lot to see if any came in and then text message my hot prospects as to which colors came in and have them text me back within 5 minutes to set an appoitment to purchase their HCH at +1500 from sticker at 7:30 am because we have a first come first serve policy! Ahhhh...miss those lack of sleep mornings to make a sale! :confuse: Now, we have 40 in stock and 9...yes 9, have the NAV! I've heard everything from 10-2500 HOV stickers available and that range happened in the same day...both from clients that were confident they had done their research correctly? Not sure about the stickers, but I can tell you due to the Inventory we have...now is definately a great time to buy. ;) Are you looking to buy (typical saleman...sorry) I'm pretty sure I'll have the color and model you want and a more than reasonable price...send me a message.

I just bought a 2007 Civic Hybrid without Navi for $21,900 out the door at West Broad Honda in Richmond Virginia. This included $726.50 in unavoidable costs (taxes, tags, title), so for an apples to apples comparison, I paid the dealer $21,173.50. This took a fair bit of haggling and it helped to have several competitive bids from other dealers within a day's drive of me. Although I feel like I got a good price, my sense is that I could have been a bit more aggressive and gotten a bit lower price. Inventories are high at some dealers; push for a good deal!

    emacias,

You may have not read the Rules of the Road http://www.edmunds.com/townhall/rulesoftheroad.html regarding this forum. You posted three times today, naming the dealership for which you work, in violation of:

    5. No soliciting or classifieds
The Forums do not allow solicitations or For-Sale postings. There are several reasons for this, but most importantly the discussions would be not be valuable if every other post contained an advertisement or falsified "customer testimonial". We strive to provide honest and accurate information.

Sorry for jumping in here Hosts, but...

Sorry Blane and the rest of the fine Edmunds forum community. For some odd reason, the Rules of the Road are web-blocked on my PC here at work, so once again, sorry about that. I was mislead about posting where I work and it wont happen again. As I mentioned before, I am here to gain and share knowledge about the Honda Civic Hybrid and GX and since I have been selling Honda's for over 5 years, and I am the Alternative Fuel Rep. where I work, I have helped A LOT of people in that time and have heard every question imaginable and I am constantly working hard at attaining more knowledge for that ONE TIME when I might have to say " That's a great question, let me find out for the both of us" and I hate saying that...so please feel free to ask away and if someone wouldn't mind doing a little COPY/PASTE of the Rules and seding them to me, that would be great!

Congrats on your good OTD price. I'm in no rush to buy and currently negotiating a better price. My best quote for a 2007 civic hybrid NON navigation is 21,025 (does not include tax, title, reg fees, etc). However, I'm considering the navigation version. I'm looking for an out the door price of 24,500 full cash buy. I emailed a few dealers with that asking price but have not gotten any replies. Anyone think that is realistic?
Also, do you know if your 2007 hybrid still qualifies for the federal tax credit? When I ask honda, they refer me to my tax advisor..How is my tax advisor suppose to know Honda's sales numbers?

I ended up purchasing a 2007 Hybrid w/ NAV in northern CA for 22,999 + fees. Not the best deal, but not bad.

Not quite under invoice ($22,867), but after holdback, the dealer made about $850.

They installed the wheel locks, but I refused to pay extra.

It's a good car and we are happy with it.

Seperately, I purchased a honda care warranty (8 years 120K) on the net for $940. We will likeley move from CA, and the 10 year 150K warranty on the batteries doesn't apply except in CA and some northeast states that have adopted CA emissions.

Having owned many laptops with batteries, I don't think they are going to last, but YMMV.

Did you check that the extended warranty specifically includes the hybrid batteries? Normally that warranty excludes such items... I believe that the hybrid warranty length is based on the state of purchase, not residence. But if the 2007 still uses the CVT, that warranty might come in handy...

I recently purchased a 2007 Civic Hybrid WITH Navi with the following options:

    All Weather Mats
    Leather wrapped steering wheel
    Splash Guards

For $23,250 (plus title, tax, lic)

The tax CREDITS for the car in Ohio are $3000.00!!!!! Plus the federal credit of $2100.00.

A few questions for those with some experience with the 2007. Was your mileage a little on the low side at first? Even with city driving, I am only getting mid 30's right now. Maybe I am still learning "how to drive" a Hybrid. I came from a 270 HP V6....

Also, what version of Nav database came with your 2007? Mine is from 2005 and I find that a bit suspicious.

    Thanks!

You got an awesome deal on your hybrid. That's almost 1k under their "invoice". I'm hoping to go to a few dealers this weekend or next with a check for $25k for a 2007 civic hybrid w/ navi Silver.
Anyone know if the Hybrid still qualifies for the tax credit? I read that it will get reduced from $2100 after 60,000 units are sold.

    typertec,

You wrote of junglejett's $23,250 deal, "You got an awesome deal on your hybrid. That's almost 1k under their "invoice"."

$23,250 is close to $1,000 under the MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price). Invoice for that vehicle is $22,272.

I'm looking for an '07 HCH w/Navi (prefer Taffeta White)...Do you have any available? I'm willing to go anywhere to get the best deal...We purchased an '06 Odyssey almost a year ago in So.Cal. and love it...Expect the HCH will be equally enjoyable...Thanks-

I am looking out the window at a sea of silver...with navi. Yes, the HCH is an awesome car and the navi they have added to the civic's is extremely user friendly and it's loaded with all kinds of good stuff.

Any of these '07 HCH's (w/navi) in white? Anything but silver!!

There is a 2100.00 credit from the Feds though.

Hybrids all over in Colorado because of the recent snows. I got great responses and probably could have gone even lower if I was a better haggler. I feel like like a got a good deal, but there are GREAT deals out there if you're good...
I got a 2007 civic w/no NAV for $22160 (23310 out the door w/ all taxes). It included all season mats, trunk tray, dimming mirror, splashguards.
  • tofu55tofu55 Member Posts: 2
Sorry I had my number wrong. I bought it for 21620 and then added on some accessories to reach the out-the-door total. I think I overpaid by like $200-300 because I got caught up in "new car fever". Keep your cool and you can do better than me!

Hi All. I just joined the forums and I posted my buying experience on the regular Civic forum (#4866) before noticing the separate one for hybrids.

I just got the car yesterday and so far love it, tho I do miss the 6 fwd gears my old car had. Anyway... I had done tons of quotes and stuff over the internet before going to Spirit Honda in the LA area. DO NOT GO THERE!! They were horrible. Tried to rip me off for my trade in then refused to give me back my own keys and registration paperwork when I wanted to leave. I finally got fed up enough that I went to that glass cage of theirs and just took my keys. Imagine literally being held hostage at a car dealer.

Anyway, I also had a quote from Norm Reeves Honda West Covina and my final is as follows:

23,100 for the 2007 HCH w/Navi + tax, title license
got 8850 for my trade-in (Spirit offered a whopping 6000)
And they did not try to rip me off with added options that I told them I didn't want up front. Overall, a great buying experience the second time around, and I was most def happy with my deal.

I bought my car on Saturday for 21, 505+ taxes and fees in Columbus, OH at Hugh White Honda. Out the door price was $23,238.46. No added accessories and without navigation. I had a good buying experience online with Hugh White Honda, Immke Honda and Honda Marysville. Also with Byers Toyota Delaware; they gave me the lowest Prius price. My lowest price was from Honda Marysville for the HCH if I had been willing to buy January 30 or 31; they were selling all civics (hybrid and non) for invoice. But I wasn't ready. :( Anyway, I got a good price quote from Immke via email and then Hugh White went under it by $100.

I am guessing I could have gotten a better price by contacting more dealers or haggling but I feel good about what I got. I really liked dealing with a lot of this by internet and email. The particular sales person I dealt with at Hugh White was very non-pressure and knew the product well so he could show me and tell me all about it during the test drive. The internet staff people there were also very helpful, nice and non-pressure.

I already love driving this car. I can't wait to learn all about it!

Bought a magnetic pearl hybrid w/o navigation at Bankston Honda Lewisville this past weekend. The selling price was $21360. I requested all-season mats, splash guards, and a Lojack system installed so the price became $22155. Add on 6.25% sales tax ($1384.70), dealer inventory tax ($42.99), documentary fee ($50), inspection fee ($21.75), license and title fees ($92.80), and road and bridge deputy fee (don't ask but it's $17.50). Total bill was $23765 out the door.

This was the price I gave the dealership, and told them to give it to me at this price or I walk away. They bit so that was it... no haggling whatsoever. Having done some research on the internet, I thought the price I gave them was going to be too low. Edmunds.com even stated that the national average was above MSRP. I was also looking at another dealership in the area and they told me after I bought the car that they sold two hybrids at below invoice. I can't confirm that (maybe they were just ticked off that I bought the car from their competitor) but if it is true, those who live in this area shouldn't have to settle for anything above invoice at this time.

Hope this helps the next person get a great deal on the Civic Hybrid. Good Luck!
  • mlk3mlk3 Member Posts: 10
Congrats on your new car! It sounds like you got a fair deal. I will be adding the all-season mats. I wish I had made that part of my deal. The doc fee in OH is $250. Although that is supposed to be the max, the dealers I talked to said that was the fee.

I purchased my Silver HCH w/Navi for $22,844.84. OTD price was exactly $25k @ Honda of Oakland. Honda of Livermore gave me the same deal, but ended buying with Oakland because the sales person deserved the commission... I thought it was a fair price.. What do you guys think? :) And so far, at 322 miles, I've gotten 42.6MPG...
  • mlk3mlk3 Member Posts: 10
That sounds like a good price for w/Navi. I envy your MPG. I am getting 35 or so in the city but have to run the defrost and heat quite a bit here in OH. My mileage is at 319. Now that temps are in the 30s and 40s maybe it will be better. Have fun and be safe with your new cool car!

Thought I'd share after getting valuable information here on my leasing decision.

Here's the deal I got at a Bay Area Honda dealer two weeks ago:

07 HCH w/Nav in Silver $22,989 (over $1900 off msrp)
I really wanted leather seats +$1500 (got $500 off $2k price)
Total price $24,489 (with leather remember)
    money factor 0.00275
    residual 57%
cap cost reduction $727 (to keep monthly payment just under $400/mo) . . . I know, never put a down payment on a lease but I did.
Total $2500 out of pocket ($400 first month payment,
$400deposit, $727 cap cost reduc, $595 lease acquisition fee, $378 title and other misc fees)
    $390ish/mo, 15k mi/yr, 36months, 8.25% sales tax.
    no trade-in

Wish the negotiations were as simple. In late January, first Bay Area dealer hinted the best they could do was a couple hundred off MSRP. After carpool stickers were all taken and Toyota started doing lease deals on their Prius, I felt I had better bargaining power. In early February I talked to two local dealers. One agreed to $1500 off MSRP and $500 off leather (a wash basically), .00275 mf, 59% residual, and about $1k cap cost reduction on 15k mi/yr lease over 36mo. I confirmed twice before going into the finance room.

This is when all this research pays off. In the finance room the contract shows that out of pocket expense is the same as well as the monthly payments. However, they completely tried to screw me in the details: money factor up to .00285, residual down to 57%, cap cost reduction up to $1500, and it's now a 12k mi/yr over 36months.

I sat there arguing and recalculating to get back to agreed deal. Of course the residual is non-negotiable and was apparently given a wrong residual of 59% to begin with. They don't break out 'cash out of pocket' number on the main screen we worked off of so I had to pry into that to find out what my cap cost reduction was. The only way to salvage the deal was to reduce the price of the car. I was willing to put up to $1k down for cap cost reduction but I think they were so fed up at this point they did a reverse calculation and gave me close to $2k off msrp and left the cap cost reduction to about $700!

I wish I had a better calculator going into the finance room than my Treo. If they had wireless access I would have just used a lease calulator online (google 'car lease calculator'). However, I had enough scenarios drawn up on my notepad that I could figure out what was good deal or not.

Very happy with the car. I came from a BMW 330i. Not the same but the quality and thought put into all the details of the Civic are extemely impressive. No way is it a substitute for a BMW, but I'm going to get a dedicated sports car later and let the Civic do my commuting.

I just got a Magnetic Pearl Civic Hybrid (w/o Nav) at Rusty Wallis Honda. Based on reymano's post when I was getting offers at 21,900 I responded to this sales guy's question of "what would it take ... today ???" by commenting that I had heard of 21,300 in the metroplex (I wasn't lying, but didn't remember it was +60). He said he would do it and I didn't commit. When I told others about that deal and his offer, they wished me good luck and said they believed I would come back to their offers (lowest of 21,850) if I was careful about how the deal progressed.

It should be noted that he was putting this offer on a car with some basic dealer mods (don't know if he was ready to part with a fresh one for more or less, but I wasn't factoring the mods as I wanted to be impartial about them to keep the deal uncluttered, but it seemed like a real offer). Pin stripes, splash guards, wheel locks, molding package, and window tint - looks better than the unmodded car for my money.

My total after taxes was $23,076 (before I made financing arrangements). I'm not sure yet where the $460 appeared from as we do have other documents with the base of $21,300 and tax was $1,316. Below that line ... Fees were 51.29 (inventory tax), 69.80 (gov. cert. title), 21.75 (inspection), 5 (deputy service), & 50 (documentary fee). Seems a little lower than some.

John Eagle was also price competitive (to 21,800) and very helpful on the phone. Some others were too pushy (classic tactics and corny talk). The sales person at Rusty Wallis was the most helpful and pleasant and no pressure until asking for a credit card deposit on the deal when I made an appointment to sign. I didn't give the card and he simply said "well you know where I stand."

I'm going to cut-off my description of the transaction there, because I had the very distinct impression that they were ready to have me sign and turn over the keys if that's how I wanted the transaction at precisely that point.

The fact is that I'm embarrassed to tell you how much money they saved me on financing. The rest of what happened pertained to financing and it was fair/low-pressure as well. I'm also embarrassed to tell you how vulnerable I think I would have been in the situation had they really pushed some garbage fast. Car fever had taken over.

When I talked to the car sales guy again today, I was looking at my contract and was really upset about the $430 missing from the deal. This was a great deal and I'm happy with the result as it was still under where other dealers stopped bidding. I took an accusatory tone and wound up just asking that he get back to me with an explanation. It isn't really about getting a good deal now as I feel like that happened for me and this deal is done anyway, but this became a game and I'm wondering if I was just gamed a little less there or if they were 100% straight. I'm almost ready to give them my full endorsement, but we'll see.

I'm also leaving a comment here as the last poster is the only way I had a good price where I knew the deal could happen.

Thanks, reymano. Hope this helps someone else.
  • reymanoreymano Member Posts: 5
Glad to help out. I'm with you on the missing $430 -- if the numbers aren't adding up correctly, I think you have the legal right to find out where it's coming from.

That's the main reason why I only negotiated on the final price and not any intermediary numbers -- I let them worry about fixing the numbers to get to my final price. The problem with that is if you miscalculated, you could end up paying more, which actually happened with my Civic. I figured the sales tax rate was going to be 8.25% instead of 6.25%, so the price I gave them was $400 higher than what it should have been. Oh well, I still got a good deal. Based on your numbers and mine, I believe someone can probably get the Civic hybrid w/o nav for around the final price of $22,500 here in the DFW area.

I forgot to mention financing in my first message. The best I was able to find among the normal auto lenders was 6.25%. I wanted something better, so I decided try my credit card company. They were able to give me a balance transfer promotion of 3.9% for the life of the balance. I used that promotion to fuel my checking account from which I then cut a single check to the dealership. The advantages are that there is no fixed-length of time that I have to pay off the balance, but more importantly, I immediately own the title to the car... no lienholder. The disadvantage so far is that I have to make sure that I pay the minimum payment due every month or I risk forfeiting my promotional rate. I don't know if there are other disadvantages, but if anyone knows, let me know ASAP.

I looked at three Honda dealers in the Denver area before finally working with Fisher Honda in Boulder. The buying experience was completely above board and upfront, no haggling and no hidden fees by the time I got to the business office. I was able to get the Galaxy Grey colored vehicle, without the navigation option, for $22,340 after dealer fees but before sales taxes of 6.4%. Honda Financial Services is running 4.9% financing, so I went with that option.

I just came home today with my Magnetic Pearl W/O Nav for the incredible price of 20,988. With tax (7.35%), license, etc, I was out the door for 22,803! I had emailed a half-dozen dealers in the Bay Area and received quotes from their internet managers. The dealer closest to my home (Vallejo) matched the lowest quote withoput blinking an eye. They only had a few in stock, but one was the color I liked best. I decided it was time to buy while the tax credit is still 100%, and the price of gas has crept to well over $3 in the area.

From IRS Newswire (IR-2007-038). Purchasers of Honda Hybrids Still Qualify for Tax Credit

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced that purchasers of American Honda Motor Company, Inc., qualified vehicles may continue to claim the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit. The announcement comes after the IRS concluded its quarterly review of the number of hybrid vehicles sold.

Honda sold 12,716 qualifying vehicles to retail dealers in the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2006. This brings the cumulative number of qualified Honda hybrid vehicles sold as of Dec. 31, 2006, to 41,124.

The credit amount and make and model of qualified vehicles sold are:

    * Honda Accord Hybrid Model Year 2006
    without updated calibration $650
    * Honda Accord Hybrid Model Year 2006 $1,300
    with updated calibration
    * Honda Accord Hybrid, Model Year 2007 $1,300
    * Honda Accord Hybrid Navi Model Year 2007 $1,300
    * Honda Civic Hybrid Model Year 2006 and 2007 $2,100
    * Honda Insight Model Year 2006 $1,450

Taxpayers may claim the full amount of the credit up to the end of the first calendar quarter after the quarter in which the manufacturer records its sale of the 60,000th vehicle. For the second and third calendar quarters after the quarter in which the 60,000th vehicle is sold, taxpayers may claim 50 percent of the credit. For the fourth and fifth calendar quarters, taxpayers may claim 25 percent of the credit. No credit is allowed after the fifth quarter.

More information on hybrid vehicles and other alternative motor vehicles can be found at IRS.gov.

I thought that doc fees were set by the dealer and that they were negotiable. Are you saying it is 250 everywhere in OH?
  • mlk3mlk3 Member Posts: 10
I did not try to negotiate the doc fee. Each dealer that I talked to about it--about 4 dealers--said the doc fee was 250. So hopefully you are right!

A reporter for a weekend news program is looking to interview consumers in the Los Angeles area who are interested in purchasing a hybrid. Please reply to ctalati@edmunds.com no later than Thursday, March 22, 2007 with your daytime contact info.

My apologies to you - I was incorrect. OH doc fees are legally capped at $250 and most dealers use that figure. I am learning that consumers should deal in OTD (out-the-door) proposals that include all the fees dealers use to pad their profits. Here's a Oct 2006 article that I found:

A dealer in MI recently gave me a quote for a HCH w/o Nav for 20,700 and 22,300 for the Nav model (prices do not include destination). These prices seem better than anything I've seen on these boards. Do those sound like good prices to you guys?
  • reymanoreymano Member Posts: 5
Sounds like a great deal, just make sure you hold them to those prices. Also watch out for the fees and taxes -- you should find out what they normally are for MI before going to the dealer.

    Good luck,

I just paid $21,790 for a 2007 HCHII with Navigation including destination in Eastern MA. No additional options and no trade but with free inspections for the life of the car ($29/year at the moment).

So, I think you can probably do better. I sent emails to every dealer within 100 miles and then played one against the other until I got to a price I liked.

    REF: 358
21.8k with nav is how much under MSRP? Sounds like a deal; was this car on their lot a long time or what? Here in OH, I can't get that price without nav!
  • myrddin157myrddin157 Member Posts: 8
$21,790 (with nav) is exactly $3155 under MSRP and $1199 under invoice. (It is also apparently about $350 under the invoice price minus a 3% dealer holdback.)

The car is new to them, and is being delivered via train on Wednesday. (I only went with that one because it was the color I wanted. They had 2 on the lot with the all tan interior but one was the "test drive" vehicle).

My lowest offer without haggling was $22,390. I pushed another $600 off of that by playing all of the local dealerships against each other.

I also got what I think is a decent price on an extended warranty. If you want to know how the negotiations went with that, let me know. I ended up getting about 1/2 off of the price that they originally wanted.

Congratulations on a great deal. i wish i could get something close here in Ohio. It still bothers me that they don't seem to be making any money on this deal. If you peruse this site, you will see that your deal is quite amazing for a HCH. I hope you did not get hosed on a trade or overpay on the extended warranty. i believe there is a 100% markup on extended warranties and you should ONLY go with a genuine HONDA warranty (if you need one at all). Good luck with the delivery and enjoy your new ride :)

They weren't really making any money on the deal unless there were some hidden incentives for them that I'm not aware of.

What they did do was to get a happy customer and someone who will return for service. They also got another car sold before the end of the quarter which might have some impact on future allotments.

As for the warranty, I got a genuine Honda extended warranty for 7 years 80k miles for $580 with $0 deductible. Their first quote was somewhere in the $1100 range which I didn't listen to as I already had a quote from the web. (Same dealership but online quote.) Seems to me this is a pretty good price as one or two repairs from years 3-7 (or 36k to 80k miles) will cover that price.

The original price at this dealership was obtained through AutoByTel at $22,988. But with having so many dealerships in this area I just kept emailing them back and forth while I watched the price drop. (I refused to talk with anyone on the phone or in person. I wanted everything in traceable/printable emails.)

I'm still amazed by this deal since, as you said, I did peruse the site and saw no one getting even close to this deal. Maybe I just hit it at the right time.

Whatever the reason, you obviously got a great deal because you did your homework and because you had your sh*t together. Again, my congratulations.

Yeah, everyone that I dealt with at the dealership seemed almost happy (for some reason) when I would pull out an email or internet price quote for well below whatever they would offer.

Happened with the price of the car, the price of dealer options (though we didn't, in the end, get anything) and the extended warranty.

I hope the next time I go to buy a car the process goes this well. (Assuming the car does actually show up when they said it will)

If anyone wants the name of the dealer and the sales people I worked with, let me know.

If i were you, i would wait to post the name/location of the dealer until after you complete the sale and delivery of your new HCH. Wouldn't want too much publicity on this one. ;)
