    Such a deal.

I'm a recently retired reference librarian - retired due to health rather than desire. I'd planned on 62 but I'm a mere pup of 60 right now. The library gig started as a "well, I'll do it for now" after I decided that teaching in a classroom wasn't really my thing. I don't make quick decisions so here I am. It was mostly a lot of fun - you can't beat it for learning a little bit about almost everything - not terribly profitable but no complaints. I've had health issues all my life so teh lower stress was really helpful.

Yes, just got assigned a product liability case. The suit was filed earlier this year and the file already contains 2000 pages.

Don't really know what most of you guys do when not on Edmunds

I'm 36 and for now a stay at home mom. I used to be a manager at walmart, fun and interesting job, I miss it. Doubt I'll be working anytime soon since driving is an issue and hubby worries too much about something happening when I'm not home.

We are lucky in that hubby has a great job as a firefighter and he doesn't mind his 230 mile commute as long as the critters stay away from his car!

May all your car purchases be bargains and may they all run better than expected. As mainly a lurker here I've enjoyed all your stories greatly.

I'm mainly a low end CCB having bought 8 cars in the last 9 years; all but two of them very used. While I desire the BMWs you guys seem to favor my modest mechanical abilities and even more modest fortunes limit me to domestic iron.

What do I do when not on Edmunds? I'm a retired neuro social worker. Since the early 1980s I've been a farmer--and a school bus driver since 1990. How old? Let's just say I'm a little older than my teeth. ;)

    Happy Thanksgiving.

The suit was filed earlier this year and the file already contains 2000 pages.

We recently had a divorce case that more than filled one of our filing crates, and back in the day, the firm had some sort of tort case that had its own room in the office.

Anyway, I never realized judges in that program crossed over amongst Circuit and District courts.

Finally upgraded the bling factor in front of the house. A nice BMW 550 (current body style) certainly helps. The 2 red acuras (TSX and MDX< both newest style) look good too.

Too bad the relatives that brought them will take them home in a few days, leaving just my 2 sad 2005 Hondas (and for the weekend, my sons filthy 2000 Acura TL with no working heat!)

Hey, who needs heat in Ithaca in the winter anyway, right?

Back in the day, I used to work inventory at REI when they let members do it, and get paid in gear (that was before REI went Nordstorm). I can't remember all the canoes I've owned, but I never had more than five at one time. :shades:

Lots cheaper than going through a different car every six months or so.

Yes, my plan was to retire at age 60 and have 34 years of civil service but things happened and my health also took a drastic turn for the worse. With the tightening at the Postal Service, us limited and light duty folks were shown the door. There is a class action lawsuit in the pipeline, but who knows where that'll go. We're making "lemonade outta lemons" now and see what the future holds. I might need to look for a small part time gig in a few months when my disability payments cease...but we'll see. A middle aged guy with a cane and no real skills makes that lucrative position hard to find, but again, we'll see.
Did you work at a college, public school...? Sounds like a neat job also.

Hey, can you move here and work the desk at our local Post Office?

It would be nice to have someone we can understand!

I've been lucky and I retired the SECOND I qualified for SS.

I've had three careers I suppose.

I spent seven years at the higest volume Sears store on the West Coast and I left as a very young Division Manager. I learned a lot there!

Then I went into business for myself in the tool business. After two years, I became a District Manager and went on to become a Regional Manager.

Although my region nwent from the bottom to the top in three years, it wasn't enough to please our new Company President who despised anyone who had been there for awhile. I was asked to move to Chicago or leave and I left.

Never would I have dreamed I would be selling cars...I HATED car salespeople especially being from the snakepit So. California market.

But, I did well from the beginning and made more money than I did as a Regional Manager with over 200 people and a 30 million dollar P&L to watch over.

I ran the internet department for awhile and left as a Team Leader and handled most of the fleet and Microsoft people.

I got VERY lucky and happened to pick the right store or I wouldn't have lasted six months.

When it wasn't as much fun anymore, I pulled the plug.

I worked with good people that I consider friends today. Customers? I met the best and the very worst.

Am I done now? Oh, I don't know. If someone wants to hire a part timer with a lifetime of retail manager experience (unlikely!) I could be tempted.

I stay busy. I volunteer at our local Food Bank at least one day a week and the Kiwanis keep me busy. I'm out in the woods hiking several times a week.

I've been blessed with a wonderful wife of 42 years, a great son and otehr family and I have a wealth of close friends that go back as far as Kindergarden.

I try not to take this for granted. I know I've been blessed.

It's pretty much up to the individual judge; I want to get my 600 days in ASAP, so I agreed to even take family court assignments- something I would never have considered back when I was in the trenches of district court,

Something I could definitely enjoy and do myself. My kids tell me I should do something auto related since I've got such a passion for anything dealing with automobiles. I did try to apply as a driver at the local Hyundai store but the guy looked up at me, saw my cane & I saw that look in his eyes...a cripple looking for work! He said, "sorry, no work here" and made me ask him twice for an app anyways...the first time he looked down & started to do paperwork. I had to ask him again and he reluctantly gave it to me and again said there was no work here. Still got that app on my desk to!

    "...a cripple looking for work..."

You should sue him for discrimination. At least he was obvious (or honest?).

About 10 years ago the school districts got wind of a lawyer who was telling diabled people to apply for jobs as bus drivers and when rejected because of physical limitations he would sue the deep pocketed schools.

To forstall that the districts instituted a physical performance test where each year we are required to run all over the bus, kick at the pedals, jump out the rear hatch and drag a bag of iron weights the length of the bus.

Nonsense really but enough to justify not hiring anyone with a wheelchair or a cane. I guess they would rather waste a lot of time and money making us act like Batman than have to pay out on a lawsuit.

Oh, when I retire, my first stop will be to a Caddy or BMW dealer to apply for that transporter job. :)

You have a very interesting job.

I am 68 and owned an insurance brokerage firm until I sold out and retired about 5 years ago. Most of our clients were manufacturers and I could write a book on products liability. Don't be surprised if they settle the case before it goes to trial.

When I was in the tool business the last few years we were under attack by trial lawyers. When ever someone would fail, it was out fault.

I'll bet I spent a third of my time being deposed and sitting in courtrooms.

Trial lawyers aren't my favorite people!

A belated Happy Thanksgiving to all of my friends here at Edmunds.

I'm 47 (48 in 2 weeks) and have been in the tech industry my whole career. Have bounced around with various jobs - customer education and tech support for the most part, but 4 years ago I moved to an operations role so I now handle back office support (revenue & cost) for a $30M business unit.

Oh, well if I knew we were throwing family in here, too....

While I'm 60 I married late (34) so was in my late 30s when it came to kids but made up for lost time - I have 4 daughters - 22, 19 and a pair or 10s. The 10s are not twins technically. One is a bio and the other adopted from China. They are so close in age that we do not know for a fact which one is older.

Have three...oldest girl is 27 and drives a '09 Versa, middle girl will be 26 and drives an '08 Accent & finally a boy, 24, who just loves public transport in Milwaukee! And I'm a chronic car buyer...in my mind, as we tend to keep our cars for a bit. But if I had my way, I'd have a 7 car garage for all the cars I wish I could own! :)

Holy cow! I thought I was all alone. I am seriously addicted to car shopping. Of course, ever since I bought my first BMW I have been addicted to BMWs. There is no drive like it.

Every time I make a new purchase I rationalize it in some way or the other. I buy an expensive car then I buy a cheaper car, which I am then unhappy with. This goes back and forth all of the time. For the past 7 years my wife has been driving an Acura MDX, which she does not want to get rid of. So here is my history:

    1999 Ford Mustang
    2002 Toyota Corolla
    2004 Infinity G35
    2007 Honda Pilot LX
    2008 BMW 335i
    2009 BMW 535i
    2010 VW Jetta TDI
2011 2012 Acura TL (Love this car)

Now the new 3 series BMW has been drastically changed with an I4 Turbo engine that generates 240 hp and 250 lb/feet of torque. It has gotten stellar reviews, thus I am getting it as soon as I have just enough equity to trade my present car in or sell it. I put over 20000 miles per year so I am getting use out of my vehicles, but I am glad that there are others like me.

I don't spend money on much of anything else except living expenses and my kids, and their prepaid college tuition (I have an infant and a toddler). There isn't extravagant debt, but I cannot help the car buying.

Ahhhhhh....I feel better :) Positive feedback welcome.

no, not a purchase, but taking my sons TL to the dealer (well, he will do it when he gets back to college).

to recap, he mentioned that a while back it stopped making heat. Blower works, AC will chill beer, but never gets above cool air. I played with the auto CC for a while, and could not figure out any way to make it pump out hot air. Certainly used to work normally!

So, I will have him take it to the Honda dealer in Ithaca (where he attends school) next week, since the nearest Acura dealer is about 45 minutes away in Syracuse. Was trying to find an indy, but they only one that seemed like a possibility had some polarizing feedback, so i don't want to take a chance since i am not able to see them in person (and of course, I am neurotic about this kind of stuff!). Plus, much better shot a dealer will figure out the problem the first time. I hope.

Was going to wait until he comes home at Christmas, but I hear that you kind of need heat in upstate NY in December. Who knew? Seems it was not a comfy ride down Wednesday (was rainy) since he had to turn on the AC to keep the windows clear. Brrr. And it could be dangerous if it gets real cold when he has to come home later in the month.

I hope this is something relatively easy to fix and not brutally expensive.

I also hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!

Over the holiday, a relative told me that they're interested in buying my Altima when I'm ready for another vehicle. This has got me looking. I really like the Altima, but wish it had leather and a sunroof, as well as stability control and a USB input, which are all features that can be found on a new 2012 Altima. Am I nuts?

I probably won't do anything for a few months, and whatever lease incentives are available will probably influence my choice of vehicle.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,244
It has auto climate control, right? I'm going to guess there's something wrong with the blend door motor.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
That's probably right and this is one of those jobs a dealer is going to be a whole lot familar with than most indy shops.
  • oldfarmer50oldfarmer50 Member Posts: 24,154
    "...AC will chill beer..."

So you take it to Florida to sell it. By the time they get around to turning on the heat you'll be long gone. ;)

BTW, when you run up to Ithaca you can test out that Z4 I mentioned. Around here you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting at least a dozen more. :shades:

Anybody check the thermostat on that thing and see if it's stuck open? That will kill your heat every time. It would also reduce the mpg so if that symptom also exists you'll know.

It's one of the cheaper things that would produce that symptom.

Since I've been married (20 years) we've purchased 8 cars. And I had three company cars, turning the volume up to 11 total.

I ain't trying to find the thermostat on it. Hopefully the dealer checks that first though! Certainly sounds cheaper than tearing apart the dash, or replacing a control module.

Not thinking that the MPG has gone down, but he does not drive that much. And it does not seem to be running hot, which I assume it would have done in the summer?

I'm Corporate Secretary for a large retailer. Not a bad job but I'm tired of it and come July I might take my 30-year pension and go do something else, not sure what.

Just leased a Buick Regal Turbo and it's the most fun car I've owned in the last 20 years. I suspect it hasn't gotten a fair shake from the automotive media.

He works a 72 hr shift then is home for 4 days, works pretty good, makes the commute only once a week, its 230 miles one way. The little Civic turned 90k this week, really great little car.

Took the F-150 in for what I thought was a few minor repairs today, ended up coming home with a rental. Apparently the horrible noise I've been hearing when the 4WD engages is a transfer case painfully close to blowing itself up. They found metal chunks in the fluid. I have no idea when I will get the truck back or how Ford plans on fixing it. We left the dealership rather frustrated.

I am not a happy camper, no transfer case should blow at 10k miles, poor quality control on Ford's part. We'll see what happens when I finally get it back, I hope this is the only major breakdown for a while. I have very little patience for breakdowns after the 04 Titan and the 06 Ram.

If there is a no heat condition the thermostat would be stuck open and the car wouldn't be heating up to operating temperature. This usually causes the computer to run the car a bit rich hurting FE. I would assume you or your son would have noticed the temp gauge sitting at "cold".

If it is a blend door motor (which I tend to agree with) I hope they don't have to pull the dash out to get to it. Before you take it in, many Auto temp controls have the ability to "self test" (I know Fords do) giving codes as to what is wrong. May be worth a shot, to at least know the dealer/mechanic isn't trying to screw you.

OK, I did a quick Google. Hold down "AUTO" and then "OFF" while the ignitiion is on and jot down the codes. You should then be able to Google the code and hopefully get an idea what you are dealing with.

I'm 53.... got married late, as well.. (34), and have one son, a senior in high school, who will be 18 in a couple of months..

I have another job besides Edmunds Host..... been there 25 years...

I've always loved cars... Don't remember ever having a car over 4-5 years old in the family, growing up... maybe , that's where I got it...

Got the BMW bug in the early '80s, and bought my first one in '85 ('67 2000CS).. Then, had an '84 Porsche 911 for four years.... got married, had a child, and then started buying the nice cars for my wife... Finally, got a car just for me, last year... then, bought an '87 BMW this year, supposedly for my son and I, but I never get to drive it...

Thanks Tom. It actually worked after I held down the buttons long enough. Good thing (I think) is that it did not flash any codes (just the 88 to show the LEDs were all working). I hope that means it is just a thermostat, or something else not in the CC system. I really don't want to hear an estimate that involves pulling apart the dashboard!

I've heard similar words from her before. First, she LOVES the car (whatever it is) then the problems start.

I do love that truck, that's the ONLY reason its getting a *get out of jail free card* and won't be traded in just yet. Although I do have to say I was ready to dump it yesterday, but a lot of that was the dealer making things so much more frustrating than they needed to be.

I think the only truck I've hung on to that was a nightmare was my white 04 Titan, I simply loved that truck and did not want to trade it in. I owned it 20 months, put 56k miles on it and would still own it to this day if hubby hadn't forced me to trade it. He was worried since it was out of warranty that it would nickel and dime us to death. Heck Nissan only spent $18k in 20 months keeping it going, I about passed out when the service manager showed me the file on that truck.

I can't say that I will defend the F-150 that much, but we'll see. Its been a pretty good truck until now.
