Any more information on the new Sierra with fulltime 4wd and 17"wheels?

    Is there a Chevy version?

Looks like a 2500, but the full time 4wd threw me.

GM Customer Service told me they use hydraulic brake booster on trucks that a liable to see heavy duty useage at large throttle openings. Keeping the throttle open reduces vaccuum hence, the hydraulic booster.

I hope the power steering pump/hoses never fail. If they do, the brakes may take a lot of foot pressure.

    FYI

There was a fire at the Pontiac Truck Assembly Plant. The plant is currently shut down. Anybody with TPW's from Pontiac may be delayed.

I am running 87 octane gas....tried Texaco, Phillips 66, Amoco, and even gave Quicktrip gas a shot. All of them cause detonation on the 87 octane.

Really weird thing.....seems to "worsen" with mid and high octane gas. It is as if maybe it is "tip in" detonation. Rather than too much advance timing, too much timing "retard".

    Anyone got any comments?

Awhile ago, some one mentioned the new Denali's and more recently a new GMC truck (2001 C-Series). Here is a link to pictures. Hit the Public Access link and then the New York auto show link.

The factory mats that came with my Silverado are pretty poor, therefore I would like to get the Catch-all mats discussed earlier.

Those that have them, which ones (numbers) did you order??

I went to the Nifty products web site and found the following (2-front mats)

    88-up C/K Pickup STD & EXTD Cab No 4WD FLR SHIFT 600022

99-up GMT-800 EXTD CAB PICKUP No 4WD FLR SHIFT
    600638

What is a GMT-800??? and which part number did you order?

Tim (mgdvhman)- the seats really are a dark grey - Graphite - I was running out of time and took those pics about 4 in the Texas sun last Sunday - I noticed that as well, they show up very light with that bright sun - but are nice and dark. And yes it finally hit about 85 and I was sweating my butt off - Blue - yes you are right Black in TX - a little crazy. I bought GM based on my good truck history with them and employee discount, I got black because I think it is about the best looking color if it is kept clean - you know we suffer for vanity. Someone remind me of that in July, August and September.

Kanton - Thanks for the details on tires and speedometer. I screwed up and didn't do any "tests" before putting the new tires on so I would have something to compare to. I'll follow those same procedures and see what happens, and test against a couple of other trucks. I don't know what they do at the factory, but I hope they look at each rear end and tire combination and calibrate it correctly. I went from 245's to 285's - I tried calculating my first gas mileage off of the true odometer reading, without recalibration, and mine probably was set correctly because the gas mileage sucked. I probably had another 30 to 50 miles more than the speedo showed - at least I hope so.

OK, I thought I had done my homework and there was little or no change for 2001 in the trucks. Anyone know more about the C series? Will it be available in 4WD? GM has said that GMC will become more upscale - looks like it is happening - is there a Chevy counterpart?. Not that I would have considered paying the higher price - and you know it will have one, but I really like the CD changer - that should have happened about 3 years ago, 6.0 L engine, steering wheel controls, no badging on the side (is it a 1/2 ton or 3/4) - they still need to add the climate A/C control though. I like the on star as well- but I won't pay for it until GM gives you the full mapping disply in the vehicle (I'll use my Garmin GPS IIIPlus til then) And no outside handles on the rear door!! - who started that rumor?

Nice truck - even though I love mine, but aren't we always wanting more. And GM knows how to deliver it in small increments to keep us wanting. I'll have to start calculating my break even point on the loan !!

Thanks storch for the link !

The GMT800 is GM's code for the new body style...GMT400 was the old style....Look an a title...it says just that..

The leather graphite for Chevy was almost a black...kinda created a dark hole effect...so I went with med grey

It's my understanding that all petroleum mfg make a winter and summer grade gasoline.
As the weather warms up and you still have the "winter grade" at the pumps this "knock" will be even more noticeable.
They should be switching soon if not already.

Any problems with tire rub when you went up to the 285's? Did you tighten your torsion bars to raise the front end? Looks like the rear wheel well height is higher than the front wells. Do you know the measurement of the wheel well heights on your truck? Discount Tire called and my LT 285's are in stock and hope to have them installed on the stock rims also.
  • gnippergnipper Member Posts: 120
No problem with the 285's at all. There are others here that have them as well (and bigger - but I think they all have some lift under it). I've only put about 300 miles on them, and took it pretty easy still so far, but no rubbing at all.

The rear end is higher than the front quite a bit, normal for most GM trucks, but I do think it seems most 4 X 4's ride a little more level than mine is. I've started looking at using the torsion bars to raise the front end an inch or two, but don't know enough about them yet - and there are people that warn against doing it.

I would think that from the factory the back of every truck would be the same height, but since the front end has a variable - the torsion bars - there may be slight differences as they roll of the assembly line, I'm kind of guessing here though. I'm checking into it, I really don't need or want a lift, just more level from front to back.

I'm away from home during the week, when I get in this weekend I'll measure the wheel wells. Anyone else out there have suggestions for the front - I know it has been asked before, but never saw a solution besides the torsion bars.

    Thanks,
    Greg

It looks the same as what is already out...???

Is it maybe the SS somebody mentioned before?

I did notice in one of the pictures of the interior they show what appears to be a telescopic extension in the sunvisor. I know some have complained of that.

Just realized in your profile you're from TX? Dallas by chance? - if so send me an email (in profile) or let me know here. We can get together and compare the trucks. Anyone else in Dallas?

Just checked my tracking number and my HPP III is at home, will have a friend pick it up so it doesn't sit on the porch til Friday.

I was wondering how you guys know when and where your trucks were made. Is it somehow hidden in the VIN number?

BTW, I don't have my truck, yet. I will definitely get it tomorrow afternoon (it's being brought to my dealership right now). The dealership who had my truck in inventory was being very slow about completing the paperwork (took them from last Friday to today!) so my dealership could send out the drivers and do the actual physical trade. But I've got the VIN number and am curious as to my truck's origin.

Just for comparison sake, today I put the tire size as 32.25" in the programmer and then drove the same exact route as before. Guess what?! Only 1/10 of a difference in mileage. 10.7 vs 10.6. I don't think it is that big of a deal, however I will put it back to 32". This way it will be as close to accurate as I can get.

Also, you might have a much bigger difference going from 245s to 285s. Just as if I go to 35"s!!
That is when the programmer will really come in handy.

    Kyle

P.S. Just ordered the 160 degree stat.

    Meredith,

The factory mine was built at was right on the sticker - at the top I think, but don't remember for sure. As well, I learned from a friend just yesterday that the first position of the VIN is the country 1-US, 2-Canada, 3-Mexico. Was true with mine, can others confirm that?

Someone else reported that underneath on the passenger side frame I believe is a sticker with the date the truck was built. Forgot to look for mine.

This forum needs search capability - my memory isn't that good.

That's interesting - I look forward to using mine and seeing the results. Since I don't have it in my hands yet and curiosity killed the cat - before you uploaded the new size, does the programmer read anything from the computer- besides the VIN? - I know it stores that in the HPP I think. I'm wondering what size GM had it programmed for? Or do they use a different method and this size we enter is just and override?

My truck has a sticker right on the inside of the driver's door.
At least if they are built in Texas thats where they put the sticker telling which plant it was built at.

Anyone looking for custom seat covers...Go to PEP BOYS. They can order them for you. I think it was about a week. Around $80 for the velour ( spot clean only ), but you could get machine washables. They come with a head rest cover and accommodate the seat belt at top of the seat with velcro, lots of velcro. But they don't come with an arm rest cover. Had them a few months and have had no trouble at all.
SADDLEMAN, INC. Auto & Truck Accessories make these "SUREFIT" seat covers. Part # XX9134-XX.

Does anyone know if there is anything to THE POWERAID throttle body spacer. Supposed to increase combustion efficiency with increased torque and mileage. Cost is $100. It does seem a little pricey for a spacer, but it does come with gaskets.

Everybody...on the washable seat covers that work with the front seat belts.....

Pep Boys? Manny Moe and Jack? The one close to me has really thinned out merchandise inventory since their stock plummeted, and they stiffed the crappy little Indy Racing League....Tony George an idiot!

Just an update...there is an PCM reflash your dealer can do that helps if you have this problem.

I got some relief when I modified my thermostat to open a little sooner, lowering the operating temp a modest amount, about 10-13 degrees F, when cool ambient temperatures allows. In hot weather, t-stat is open fully anyway, so no benefit.

Dbhull, let us know if changing the plugs to a colder heat range helps out. I suspect it will do the trick.

same...inside driver's side door. you can only see it when the driver's door is open - it's stuck opposite where the "inner" door handle is on the fourth door. mine says fort wayne, indiana and i've had no problems whatsoever. gotta stop reading this board...you guys have me thinking about new floormats now...jeesh!!!

    Westin chrome plated stainless or
Back Country stainless. Does anyone have

and/or stainless hold up in the winter with
    road salt.

Thanks for the VIN number and plant info. I'll check it out when I've got a minute. Bookmarked the websites, too.

I had a difficult time sleeping last night. Must be the excitement of finally getting my truck today. I've been pretty useless at work for the past week, concentrating more on trying to acquire my new truck, but I think today will be the worst. And the day is just dragging!

    Hey All

I have a question about installing headers on to an engine. I have the 5.3 and am going to be adding a Gibson Cat-back exhaust system, K and N air filter, and eventually the new hypertech programmer. I have read about installing headers to give more power to the engine but is that a smart thing to do? Will adding headers to my truck put a strain on the engine or its surronding parts and will it add noise to the engine and noise in the cab? Thanks.

I found out this morning that my LS 00 1500 was delivered to the dealership last night (Wednesday). I will pick it up on Friday morning since that is best time for my wife get off work and to go with me. Otherwise I would go get it today. But's what's another day of waiting at this stage. Recap: I placed the order on March 16, GM built it at the Ft. Wayne location on April 13 and it was delivered to the dealer on April 19

Ryan, you were right on the shorter delivery time (6 days) to the dealership. GM had told me 2-3 weeks. I thought their estimate was high, but we never know for certain what to expect with GM in control. Just hope for the best and it turned out good.

headers provide a decrease in back pressure by giving a straight-line path for exhaust gasses. this also aids in combustion due to the relief of back pressure in the cylinders. there is an increase in resonation under the hood but its minimal in the cab. two schools of thoought here, 1) large tube headers and 2) small tube headers. large tube will give you more horsepwr in the higher range(2775rpm), small tube will give more hp in the low range(below 2775rpm). 3"-3.25" tubes are the most popular. you should see a minimum increase of @15% in hp from headers alone. with k&n, catback and headers will give @35-40% increase in hp. most of the "noise" will come from the catback, depending on the muffler you choose. also look for an increase in mpg by @15%. the 2000 factory intake is pretty efficient(hard to increase hp& mpg here)'98-'99 was conciderably less efficient, 2000 was really improved on the 5.7l & 5.7l.

nerf bars (snowchaser) Thu 20 Apr '00 (07:56 AM)
Snowchaser said " I am looking at nerf bars for my truck. Westin chrome plated stainless or Back Country stainless. Does anyone have experience with these? How does the chrome and/or stainless hold up in the winter with road salt."
Do not know about salt since I live in GA. I purchased the CPS (chrome plated stainless) for my '00 Silverado LT, 4dr, Z71. They are the best of two worlds, if scratched (perish the thought), they won't rust, will not tarnish (as stainless will unless kept waxed). I installed them in approx 1 hour with help of wife who held up the far end until I could get front bolts started. These are a body mount and frame supported installation. Really shine up good....

I'm considering a new GMC. I use my truck to haul motorcycles a lot. I want 4x4 because I live in the mountains where the roads get slick in winter. I'm not going to be doing doing any serious four-wheeling. Is there an easy way to
lower the bed of a Silverado to make it easier to load bikes? One magazine test I read says that there are 2" blocks between the axle and the springs... anyone taken them out or put shorter ones in their place?

    thanks.

    How about Pontiac, Michigan?

Seriously, they should all be very similar in build quality. The tooling, fixtures and procedures have more to do with quality than anything else, and they should all be the same at all factories.
