I haven't heard yet mention of the black on bottom. I have charcoal/black. I am about to get black flares for it. Are there any pictures out there of this finished. It is THE awesome color combo. Chrome wheels and tinted glass.

Well, I'm only an architect, what possible use do I have for numbers.I live in L.A., so I sometimes think that I have driven thousands of miles per day when in fact I've only gone 2 or 3 in as many hours ( welcome to L.A. traffic).
Yes the brakes in this 98 c1500 seem mushy, anything else I should be on the lookout for?
And here's another wierd thing, the VIN tag from the dash by the windshield is gone, but the tag is still on the doorframe and glove compartment. I did a lemon check and the vehicle checks out ok. But why would that VIN tag be gone?

i'm not wanting to be on the down side of this
4dr. thing because we plan on buying a 2001 buy
the end of the year. i sure don't want those
handles either. however my dealer has 1 truck on
the lot right now (and i forgot to see which
plant it came from) with the new handles. you
still have to open the front drs. 1st like before
but, all they did was to bypass the handle you
normally grab to open the back. it is kinda silly
but my dealer says that some of the feedback GM
has gotten is that truck owners claim that when
people get in and out of back that they end up
with hand prints on exterior. i have seen trucks
around here (mostly 3drs.) with hand prints on
outside. maybe it's a trial thing, who knows. at
any rate there is a picture in our local
newspaper (Fresno Bee). i'm sorry but i have'nt
any way to post these pictures here for you or i
    would.

and the front end clunk is still there. The clunk is from 20 mph and below over bumps in the road while coasting. If I am accelerating I cannot hear it. The first service dept foreman went for a ride with me and definately heard the clunk. said "I can definately hear it, but it is going to be hard to find." They had the truck all day, used chassis ears, etc... could not diagnose.

Today the truck was at dealer #2. Service manager could hear it "slightly." the only way to hear it slightly is if one was hard of hearing, it is that obvious. Anyway he thought it was coming from the cv axle shaft engaged with the ring gear in the front diff. He said since this is always moving, I would hear it on the drivers side and not the passenger because the passanger side is not engaged. Outside the truck if you grab the cv axle just before the diff and move it you can reproduce a similar sound. I had the service manager do this while I was sitting in the cab and the noise was very similar. it is hard to tell if it was the same cause. this is getting more and more frustrating. I just want a diagnosis. If it is nothing fine, but if it is something that needs to be fixed I want to get it done. there is nothing worse than not knowing.

Next step is to go to the best suspension guy in town. he can usually diagnose anything. after that, I don't know; maybe a differential shop? Eventually somebody is going to be able to give me a definate answer.

Do any of you have insight, suggestions, etc...?
    Thanks
    Kyle

Kanton - Sorry to hear you're having problems they can't seem to diagnose - always the worst. I got my HPP III when I got in today - was all excited, calculated tires - can't argue a bit - 32" seems to be the figure to use for 285/75R16, plugged it in - it went through its paces - then it came back with a message "Calibration Not Found" indicating my truck has settings the HPP doesn't know about. It would not allow me to proceed, message said to call Hypertech. Will do on Monday. :( The truck has not been off the line more than 5 weeks.

While messing with the truck and trying to confirm my production date (I think it really was 3/20 - frame says 3/14) I took a look at the driveshaft - one single piece about 6" dia. - 1500 Z71 5.3L 4L60-E transmission - confirms Tims note.

Two tone colors - I'm surprised - it has been repeated many times that with the Chevy LT you can't get two tone - You can in the GMC line - SLE and SLT. Bottom color is either Pewter or Storm Gray and available with all colors. I know some don't like the GMC front end and they typically run 2 to 3 hundred more for the GMC, but if you're set on the 2 tone then there is an option.

did you ever have those Rancho's checked out?
  • crossfire1crossfire1 Member Posts: 33
But the GMC is not an option for me. I know it's the same truck, but I'm a huge race fan (go 3), and I love to wave the Chevy banner.
KRC 32, I have seen a lot of two tones, but I have yet to see one with black on the bottom. Do you have any pics yet? I'd sure like to see it.
Also Jamesk4 had an interesting point. I plan on keeping this truck for 15 years, that's why I'm getting the composite bed. Lot's of corrosives on the road in the winter here in Upstate NY. But I hadn't considered how antiquated it will look after 10 years. I'll think about it, but I know I'm going to get the two tone anyway. :-)
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
you have to read rwagoner's post again, #202. He has the same two tone as me, black on black.

My wife and I picked up our LS 1500 on Friday. We really like it. Everything seems to be okay at this new trial time except for one item left off by gm.

Build in Ft. Wayne on April 13 and does not have any outside rear door handles. Very sleek appearance.

Some features are: (5.3, 3.42 ratio, 4 spd automatic, 2wd, 4 door, pewter, med. gray interior with fabric reclining buckets and full console, am/fm with cd and cassette, ride control suspension, trailering package, 6 way power seats, locking differential, interior mirror with compass and outside temp, rear defogger, fog lamps, cast aluminum wheels, 255/70r 16 als wol tires, deep tented glass, outside dual power heated mirrors, tow hooks, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry with theft alarm).

Everything came just as I had ordered except for the camper/5th wheel trailer wiring. The service dept. spent well over an hour with the truck up on a rack looking for it. Said they wanted to make absolutely sure before calling gm on Tuesday about the factory leaving it off the truck even though it was listed on the invoice.

Tip to all: Better check every item on your invoice to make certain it is installed on the truck. I found out first hand that just because gm puts it on the invoice does not mean it is on the truck.

    Gotta Go. Bob

Yeah, I know flywheel and rear wheel numbers differ, and that is why I specify which I'm talking about whenever I use the term HP. Can you give me some info on your friend's shop in SA. I live in Dallas, but it is always good to know of a good shop with access to a dyno etc. Do they just work on hot rods, or trucks too? When I get my truck I know I'll want to get the diffs changed to ARB Lockers, and I'm a little leery of letting just anyone fool with ring and pinion setup. Anyway, keep us posted on your experiences with the upgrades. It would be really interesting to hear about dyno runs after your mods. Later.

I think Flares add everything a truck should look like....period.

yeah like said....Once ya had black.....

I love my Black/Black LT 2500 with Black Flares...but every few years I need some color man!

Next one will be 2-tone LT.....regardless of how I gotta do it...

maybe the outside handles won't be so bad??...a GM ex.cab almost loks like a crew cab!..it's gotta be twice the size of a Ford or Dodge!

I'll measure the shaft on my 2500....I know it's huge!...(This ain't sounding right here guys)

    Happy Easter To all!

That you'll be getting yours soon, and I still have about 4 months. :-\
Do any of you guys with 2500's (mgdvhman) have the cab clearance lights? If so how do you like them? You can't get them from the factory on the half tons, so I plan on putting them on after market.
Out of all of the 3/4 tons I have seen so far, nobody orders them with the lights on top. Maybe you guys think they mess up the aero, but they look really nice at night and in the evening.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Dont be jealous ive been waiting since last august to get one (not waiting for an order that only took 27 days). My 9 month wait is almost over. Its been fun but it will get so much better once i get it

    Ryan
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Hell...I waited 5 months of actual order wait time.

    Crossfire,

I have never seen a new style with lights on cab...personally I don't like them.

    No offense.....

They look cool at night....but what is the purpose?....so birds don't hit you?

I think when a crew cab has them all over the roof and fenders it's just too much..

    - Tim
  • crossfire1crossfire1 Member Posts: 33
To each his own I guess, that's why I love this country. I always thought the lights made the truck look more like a rig, and I noticed on the new ones I have seen in the magazines, that they have a new style to them.
That big black rig of yours would look great with those lights on top. But like you said...
My only problem is getting somebody to do them with out messing up the headliner, and keeping them from leaking.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    a concern of mine also...

makes it 5 times more likely to leak!

    yeah...it does look like a semi...don't it?

They are cool...I just like the roof line without them...maybe if they retracted during the day..and came out at night?....kinda like Corvette headlights!
    LOL

Anybody have recommendations for brands of "ventvisors"?

    it was a joke.

I like my trucks black. All black.

Except the interior. I like my interiors medium grey.

Oh, and the windows. I like to be abloe to see through them...

    To bob332:
My truck also came with out he harness (UY2). Took a while to convince the dealer that it was not there. They finally ordered and installed it. It should be tied with wire ties to the driver side of the bed visible from the space between the cab and the bed.

So I'm still wondering what folks think of this truck. It's a 5.0L v-8 2 wheel drive. Not looking for a super powered monster truck, just reliability that isn't going to cost me a fortune to maintain. I take good care of my vehicles and drive maybe 7000 per year with some light hauling. I don't want something that I have to throw money at every time I open the door. ( like what I have now, but that's another story, but I will say it's a Ford).
    Any downsides to this truck?
  • volkejvolkej Member Posts: 108
I noticed you put Deadhorse AK as your location (#186). Did you drive your Silverado over the Haul Road? If so, how did it go? Anything get broken? And what time of year did you drive it?

what are you going to pay for this 98? You might want to check out a base Silverado 00. You ought to at least go to a new Chevy or GMC dealer an check out their base model. If you wait until August/September time frame (perhaps even now) you can get a good deal on a regular cab (unless you must have a ext. cab, then 3 doors are being discounted by the big dealers right now.)
Despite the vibration problems some people have,
    most Silverados/Sierras are O.K.
I used to buy used trucks - but no more. Repairs are a time and money killer - whether or not I do the repairs myself.
GM has 3.9% financing now - if money is an issue.
Count on model year end discounts on regular cabs/3dr cabs pretty soon also.
I would stay away from any VIN number monkey business.
I know I am in the minority on this view, but the V6 saves you some money, and sounds like all you need. I have one and it is a great truck. (I've had 350 and 454 Chevy pickups for the past 20 years.)
I don't know what state you live in, but tax and plates can make a big difference (about $2K) in Arizona on a base new pickup. If you can buy from a private party a 99 or 00 pickup, I think you would be better off - as long as it has not been beat. I plan to trade my 00 base Silverado next month, and I know that others who buy on GM employee discounts trade every 6 months to 1 year on a regular basis - you can avoid the tax and fees and still have most of the new truck warranty. Get the GM extended warranty if you are nervous. You can get these on line for about $300-700+ depending on the deductible and time frame.
I suggest you test drive the base GMC Sierra pickup and compare it to the 98 you are looking at. You will get all of the new technological features of the new deluxe trucks you read about here at about $10,000 less cost. I only recommend the Sierra because it comes with a built in armrest on the base model and the Silverado does not.
Check the online sellers (CarOrder, Cars.com, etc.)and I think you will be surprised on how relatively inexpensive these trucks can be.
Just my $.02 - good luck.

Several folks on this topic have recommended the Weathertech visors. I installed them and like them very much. Unlike many other brands they do not use double sided tape to them on. They use tension to hold them in and may be easily removed if desired. They come in smoke grey and are low profile. I don't think they have a set for the rear if you have the x-cab.
Takes less than 5 minutes to install (more like 30 seconds each side).
The only place I have found to buy them is on line @ http://www.macneilauto.com/Notape.html.

    Happy Easter!

I just did my first oil change yesterday.
I noticed that the oil had a strange green color.
I can remember reading something about this on earlier postings, but can't remember the answer for it.
    Does anyone know?

    Sorry the 56MPG should be 56MPH. I wish I got 56MPG!
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
the green you see in the oil is a flourescent dye
the factory puts in so that leaks are easier to
spot if they should happen. the stuff goes away
    after 2nd or 3rd change.

does anybody have an extended warranty, if so
what company has the best deal?

Yes, we took the Silverado up the haul road. It was really the highlight of our trip to Alaska.

That road is really hard on tires! We have LT tires on the truck, and you could see all the chips and rips and tears in the tread - no holes, no blowouts, but 10,000+ miles of wear in 1,000 miles. I would never drive that road with P-series tires as some seem to want to do.

It is hard to imagine a place where you can see for 150 miles and see nothing manmade except the road you are on. And the prospect of being 100 miles beyond where a tow truck will go is daunting to say the least!

I'll be happy to talk in more detail if you want to email me, this is off topic for this discussion group. I wondered how long it would take for someone to notice and comment on that line. You're the first.

Took the plugs back out yesterday and set gap to .045. Temps were in the low 80's today and I had absolutely no ping, even under a load with the A/C on. I think this is the trick to resolve it. Works for me. Only drawback is if something else with the ignition, even if totally unrelated, GM will probably give me a hard time about covering under warranty if I bring it to them with these non-oem plugs in it.

What do you think? Will they harp on the colder plugs if I have other problems under warranty. The tech at NGK said that running these plugs will do absolutely no harm except maybe decrease my fuel economy some. To me, it is worth less gas mileage to add life expectancy to my engine, but so far, it hasn't hurt my mileage any that I can see.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I had changed my plug and wires on my '00 Silverado about 4 weeks ago. Since then have been on test drive with service manager and had asked about the plugs and wires affecting warranty. He said would not unless any problems are traced to the wires or plugs specifically...told me to keep the stock plugs and wires just in case needed to swap them out to restore back to factory.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I have always been told by industry insiders NOT to purchase extended warranties. Reasoning is that they (people selling it) are out to make money so it can't be a good deal. I think in the case of the Silverado, this might be an exception to the rule. With the problems that I have seen posted to this board, I'll have to think twice on extended warranty for my truck. I wouldn't worry about it now as you can always add it on just prior to your 3/36 factory warranty is expiring. My $.02.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
Unless you are someone who must have no risk in life, then an extended warranty is a waste of money. The companies selling them DO make money, otherwise they wouldn't offer them.

Every problem posted this board has either been fixed in production or is a basic factory warranty issue.

For what the warranties cost, as well as deductibles and the hassles you have to go through to prove you didn't do anything wrong in order to get coverage, I'd rather take the "risk" of possibly having a problem. I've never owned an extended warranty, and I have never had a problem car or truck (all have been GM). Sure some needed repairs, but the repairs were far out of even extended warranty coverage. Besides, a majority of repairs done through Goodwrench Plus dealers now have lifetime warranties (AC compressors, etc.)

Waste your money if you want, but remember the companies offering them aren't doing it for YOUR health.

...Remember...people come here to tell there problems.....and the few that do...is maybe .01% of all Silverado owners...

No, the new tranny didn't cost you $50; it cost you whatever the warranty cost plus $50. That would be what, $1050? $1450?

    You get the point ...

Has anyone changed their rear differential fluid yet? My truck has 17k miles and I changed it for the first time today. It was about 3/4 - 1 quart low and it was pretty dark. I would have changed it before now, but my Helms never shows it needing to be changed up to 150,000 miles! It just says to check it and add if necessary. That doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't it need to be changed at some point. I just couldn't stand it anymore and changed it anyway and I am glad I did. How dirty and low does it have to be before I should worry about having done damage?

Also, my Helms manual calls for 75w 90w in the rear and 80w 90w in the front (4wd). Why is a heavier weight called for in the front? Can I safely run the same 75w 90w in the front also?

Sorry for the long post, but I have also noticed that one of the zerk fittings for the front end parts is in a really cockeyed position that a normal grease gun with straight fitting cannot reach. Anyone bought a fitting that will reach the more than 90 degree angle for this fitting. It seems to be for the connecting rods, but it is quite a distance away and torward the center of the truck. I could check my manual to see what it is actually, but don't have them here in front of me. Just thought I would ask.

    Thanks.

    Dan.

Ordered new 00 Silverado z71 4 dr. I was very pleased with my deal but know I would not have been able to do as well as I did if it had not been for info I was able to pick up from EDMUNDS. Great site. I would definitely advise anyone looking to buy to go to EDMUNDS for the terrific available info. I know one thing - Dealers probably wish there was no such thing as sites such as EDMUNDS. I still own my 89 loaded Silverado. Getting the new one at $200 over inv.

    Hmmmm...

I remember when the first mock up of the new Silverado was at the Auto show...back in 97-98?

It had some cool accessories type stuff that didn't make it...and a very nice Orange "type" paint job that also never made it...

I always liked that exact color...

Wonder if it will be the same?

I would take that over the Carmine/Gold Combo I want.

And good thing the oak is history....wonder what neutral will look like in person?

....and what color would be a good Flare/bottom with Orange?

    hmmmmmm

Obyone- I told him about it and he hasnt seen or heard any details about the door handles. He has a guy who wants a i forget what color silverado with the new Z71 sticker and the only truck with the new sticker around him is my truck and one other on their lot. No other dealers in the area have new trucks with the new sticker. Same around me i have only seen 1 truck on a lot with the new sticker. This stuff is wierd what is GM doing its like they are only doing it to certain trucks and stuff thank god my truck is in and it cant change anymore.

Tim- i dont know about the orange color only thing i can think of is the same color as ford has on their rangers. Neutral is like a tanish cream looking color. Its not bad ive seen it in other brands itll probably look pretty good with a carmine truck. Flares hmmm i have no idea what color would look good besides orange.

Gm is getting radical here it seems like. Oh well hopefully people like what they are doing. Im so glad my truck is in and i dont have to worry about changes
