Thanks for the info. on the fifth wheel wiring and that gm also left it off your truck. Seems odd that gm is leaving off this paid for option that was even listed on my invoice. My dealer also told me that it had been left off of another truck besides mine. However, it seems that it should be mounted better than with just wire ties. Thanks for the alert. The manual shows a drawing of it attached to the frame in what appears to be a more secure attachment than with just wire ties. I will definitely talk to the service manager about the mounting and other details before they do it. I think it should be the same gm harness, attached and connected the same as if it came from the factory on the truck just as I had ordered and paid for it. Bob.
That picture is from a new 2001 GMC C-Series. New top of the line trucks. All others have had that blank panel you mentioned. It is used for the rear HVAC controls on Tahoes/Suburbans. Has no purpose on the trucks. Hope this helps.
Tim said "As for Oil filters.....GM Delco filters are rated some of best around. Besides...if you DON'T use them...you void the warranty."
I asked my sales guy about this and he said that you can use whatever you want, but you have to keep records so that IF you have an engine problem later you can prove you were responsible and didn't cause the problem by not performing proper maintenance. Now, I know this is a Sales guy, not a Service guy, but I haven't seen anything indicating what I can and cannot use on my truck.
Also, did anyone get an actual form outlining the New Vehicle Limited Warranty at purchase? I didn't get anything. My sales guy said something should have been in the glove box, but there wasn't. I want an official document outlining the warranty so I know what's covered when. Anyone know where to obtain such a document?
The closed compartment on the overhead console in front of (toward the front of the vehicle) the map lights is where the OnStar system would be installed, if you had it. As to why it's closed and not open (like in the Sierra console picture) I've not idea.
I asked my sales guy about the possibility of getting the GMC sun visors (that have the extenders, like in the photo) and he suggested I contact a GM parts place. What would a GM parts place be? Would I need to stop by the service department of a GM dealership?
1. After reading all the debate about conventional oils vs. synthetics, what are the thoughts on a synthetic blend oil, like Castrol Syntec Blend or Valvoline DuraBlend? I had a couple mechanics tell me that some synthetics have such small molecules that they can cause oil leakage past the engine seals, whereas the synthetic blends offer the best solution to reduced friction, extended life and no leakage. Any thoughts?
2. After driving my new 2500 LS, 6.0l for a little over a week, I now have a rattle / vibration / humming noise from the muffler or muffler heat shield when starting the engine cold. There's no sound at idle, but when accelerating up to about 35 MPH, there's a humming or ringing noise from what I believe is the heat shield. It quits after a few minutes when the exhaust gets hot. Took it to the dealer yesterday, and they said yes we hear the noise, and yes we've even heard it on a couple other 6 liters, and yes we even started up 2 2500's with 6 liters sitting on our lot, and they make the same noise.
But guess what the answer is? "Well, we don't see anything wrong and until we get a TSB or some info from GM about this problem, there's nothing we can do to fix this". I asked for a new muffler but was refused on the grounds that they have no info from GM about this problem.
Anybody else with a 2500 6 liter have this problem, and if so, how was it fixed?
I still use a Delco filter...even if I do it myself. yes you could keep a record of buying other filters as such... But IF you had a problem...and was able to produce all records....I would say they would then try to attack the filter not being GM. I figure it's better this way so they have one less thing to throw at you....if the time ever comes...YOU will have to do the proving...they just make the accusations.
I have never had to use a warranty for major engine repair....but if I do...one of the vital components will be made by the company that I will be up against....not an aftermarket one.
Do whatever you want...but I see this as the best way.
My 2500 '00 does it also, the magic number is that it does it at 1900rpm's until the exhaust warms up. It is the heat shield on the 55 gallon drum muffler doing it. I had my friend hold the throttle at 1900 rpm and sure enough the shield vibrated, put your hand on it and it goes away. I do not think that you will get GM to fix it because it is not relly a problem with the truck (just a anoying noise) Mine sounds like a train horn off in distance. You could maybe trim the shield back a bit and that might fix it.It does not bother me enough to take it in and get the same results you did at the dealer so i have not bothered. Good luck
thanks for the confirmation. I suspected it was the heat shield - I crawled up under there with the engine idling, and I could hear a faint ringing noise, more quiet but the same noise as I heard under acceleration. I held my hand on it and it went away. I haven't noticed the exact RPM at which it vibrates, but I did notice it stops and then starts up again whenever the tranny shifts up a gear.
Since the dealer won't / can't fix it, I thought about just wrapping a piece of tie wire around the muffler and the shield, or jamming a bolt between the muffler and the shield to stop the vibration.
That is a HUGE muffler - I wonder what that mother is going to cost to replace?!
usally if you have less than 1000 miles (sometimes longer) the warranty will pay to fix squeaks and rattles. You might also try useing steel wool to stop the rattle.
have you ever used any of the fuel system cleaners and if so what are your reccomendations? my salesman (Corian) had pinging problems when he first aquired his '98 and now the pinging is gone. his son put one of the fuel treatments that's available that also reduces carbon build up. he does'nt remember if he put valvoline or chevron in there. it must have worked though because it even idles smoother.
99 Silverado this weekend on vacation and I could definately tell the difference between his and mine. Both are ext. cabs, Z-71's, with the 3.73 and locking rear end, but mine's a 2000. Mine seemed to have more get up and go...
00 Silverado LT Z71,3/73 locking rearend, every option. It was delivered to me at work,so now I get to sit here and go crazy until I get off.Paid $400 over invoice in Austin Tx.This is the first new Chevy I've baught since 79,I hope I don't regret it.Any comments or anything I should watch for
I have used the Chevron based on the recommendation from my mechanic. I do it at every 7-8K miles. Made substantial difference on my old '91 Nissan truck...not so much difference on the Silverado. Then again I run regular in the Nissan and Premium in the Silverado.
I read in a previous post that the rattle could be fixed by placing a piece of gasket material under the heat shield mounting bracket. It would be worth a try if it cures the rattle.
So if you have to use GM oil filter (which I don't think you do and Mobile 1 oil filters states it will not void any manufactures warranty) then do you have to use only GM oil and only GM gas???? I don't think so. That would mean that GM could come back and say hey you used Mobile 1 oil so that was not friction enough of to small particles so we will not cover you motor. All that GM would want is that you used high quality (meets or exceeds) products and that you changed as needed. These dealers (sales person or service person) just want you to sell you more stuff and keep you coming back to them. So that mean that if you take your truck in to Fast Lube or WalMart then that would void your warranty. I don't think so. Most places you take your vehicle to get the oil changed use there own labeled oil filter.
Mobil-1 5W-30 and AC Delco PF59 filter, from the very first oil change at 1500 miles, thereafter every 3000 miles. Takes about 6 3/4 quarts to bring it to the full line on the dipstick. Thereafter stays at the full mark until the next change at 3000 miles. Have 25,000 miles on truck now. '99 LS1500 4x4 Z71 5.3L 4.10 locker.
nice truck...do you have any problems getting in and out without running boards? considered tinting windows? or adding a Whipple? Just kidding...looks awesome with those tires...and Ryan's favorite color...
I had read somewhere that if the owner's manual says 6 quarts...I should fill with six quarts and where ever on the dipstick the level falls on, I should now mark that level and consider it as new full mark. Reasoning behind this was that the installation of the dipstick may vary from truck to truck and would definitely not want to overfill with oil. Opinion?
The harness will not require any splicing, it tees into the rear harness by the other trailer plug. Should take the dealer no more than an 1/2 hr. to install and check out. They tie it up so because it is long, mine had to be cut when they finally added the receptacle for my 5th wheel trailer.
NICE TRUCK MAN. Nice color too. I like it alot. I hope your a tall guy that looks like a big step into the cab. Just a suggestion but you should think about putting a grill guard and some nerf bars on it. (just a suggestion)
Kevin and Meredith, thanks for the additional info. on the 1500 overhead console with a blank compartment containing a knockout. My wife's mind (and mine) is now satisfied.
Meredith, The following came in my 00 1500: Owner's Manual, Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet, Limited Warranty For Tires, and a folded brochure (part #15757348) titled Important Information About Your Truck. I trust that this is everything. If you are missing one or more items, you might want to request that your dealer get for you. Bob
Tim and quadrunner 500, Good point on using GM Filters. Others may be also be acceptable, but using gm ones would rule out any arguments from the dealer and gm on warranty coverage. Just one less potential issue to have to deal with. I have used gm filters for years with good results. (260,000 miles, 201,000 miles, 192,000, etc., etc. with never any internal engine repairs needed or performed. I plan to keep using gm filters on gm products. The key, as we all probably know, is keeping those filters and oil changed and driving it like you plan to keep it for a lot of miles. It pays off, even on resale. Bob
Thanks for the additional information. Where is your receptacle for the fifth wheel located? Did the gm dealer do it at the time they installed the wiring harness? Will be helpful to know before I take mine back to the dealer for the installation. I may schedule the work for Friday, but not sure yet. Bob
My salesman (I know, I know) made a very special emphasis on putting ONLY regular unleaded in my 2K Sierra. He said, and I quote, "Premium will create a build-up of deposits on the pistons and the engine will eventually start to knock because of it." Huh? Anyone got a comment on that one? By the way, I've been driving for 25 years and I have never used anything but regular high-quality oil and AC-Delco filters and I have NEVER had a single problem, nor oil consumption problems on any vehicle. I think it's more important to change frequently enough (5,000 miles or 6 months). BTW, the 5.3 motor also requires 6 quarts (as does my 3.5 Intrigue).
As long as it is above the bottom grid mark, it falls within acceptable parameters. Bottom of grid mark line is identified as add oil line...but not to exceed top line of grid marks. Wow, this can get boring really fast.
I always thought that fill with recommended amount as indicated in owner's manual and as long as if falls within the grid marks...it's ok.
you're right about dipstick length. i'm not sure why, unless these sticks are made by different vendors but, my stick and my friends are a 1/4" different in length. mine is shorter but shows within 3/16" from high mark with 6 qts. we also use the AC oil filter vs. aftermarket brands. tried mobil #206 and oil guage (i know it's only good for general reading) showed almost 8 lbs. less pressure. this is most likely because of tighter paper mesh. my service guy at Michael chevrolet in Fresno, CA also told me that GM would probably use such a filter or any other filter against a warranty claim. sorta of confusing though especially when most aftermarket items of good quality express "meets or exceeds oem".
The receptacle is on you to locate and install, the only thing you get is wire connected into a harness. I had mine installed inside the bed, left side by the dimple where you can drop a board across the front of the bed.
bob sorry it took so long to get back to you, but this board's moving pretty fast lately. reference your question in post #313 about carfax.com:
i don't know how deep these inquiries go, because i ordered my vehicle from the factory so no customer test drives were done with it before i got it and i didn't need to do a vin search on it. additionally, i know some, if not all, of the services listed are not free. lastly, the earlier post i made had an incorrect url. the correct one is:
I got some floor mats yesterday 4 of em for $1.99 each. Black towels from target. Cost me a total of $8.00. Just thought id give this suggestion it doesnt soak up water but it keeps dirt and mud off the carpet and you can wash these every few wks.
Engine cooling, instead of installing a lower thermostat, has anyone tried Water Wetter? Claims to lower tempeture by approx 30 degrees. Go to: http://www.redlineoil.com/prod_frameset.htm , then click on "cooling products. P.S. I have tried this product, I want to see what the comments are before disclosing my results.
Well, 2 more Austin, Tx folks have joined in!!! Meredith & dhharris! I believe this is the most representation from any 1 city!!!! Eat your hearts out!!!!
Kyle - Sharp truck, you've worked hard on it. I have to admit - I like that blue, I haven't before now - maybe the combination of the wheels, lift, grill, etc. It looks good. You all make it tough on a guy. I just wanted a black Z71 - then I found this forum. Decided I wanted some tires. Then I just wanted it to sit level - well as I look at options to do that, now I want to lift it a couple of inches and put wheels on it.
I don't need to keep up with the Jones, that doesn't do anything for me, I just think you've got a sharp truck and wish mine looked a little tougher - its hard with it sitting on the factory suspension.
I've been a silent observer since Oct. '99 when I ordered my Silverado. My Y2K, 4dr, 4x2, 5.3l, tow package, rear locker, charcoal grey LS came in Feb.4th. I puchased it from Covert in Bastrop, TX. I've had it almost three months and 2800 miles with no complaints so far. Motor seems to get stronger every day....
I ran it in my truck last Summer, then went back to 50/50 over the cold months, now have it back it for the Summer.
Autotap diagnotics show absolutley no change in running coolant temperature when compared to straight water on my truck. I keep running it for my own sugar cube affect, but I don't think it has made any significant, if any difference at all.
Great looking truck Kyle. I like the wheels. I plan on buying a 2001 Silverado/Sierra 4x4 Ext Cab as soon as they become available. In the meantime I've been looking at websites which show different custom wheels. Anybody found an easy to search website which shows pickup/4x4/6 bolt wheels? Gets boring spinning through all the (car) 4&5 bolt wheel photos...
Looks like you have room for even bigger tires. Do you know if those tires will fit under the stock Z-71 suspension, or did you have to raise it cause they were too big? I'm gealous - still waiting for my hypertech...
Has anyone had a problem resetting the oil check light after an oil change? I have a 2000 Silverado LS Big V8. Everytime I get an oil change, I am not able to reset the oil check light. Have followed the owner's manual with no success. The dealer and Chevrolet (mfr web site) are no help.
Really stupid question but how come the bucket seat trucks with a console don't have super big gulp sized cupholders like the bench seat trucks,or maybe I should say Sonic Route 44 sweet tea sized, any suggestions.I have about 750 miles on the Y2K 1500 LT Z71 Off Road 4Dr 3/73 locking rear end only problem so far is a pull to the right.I had a good laugh when the F& I guy tried to sell me a warranty, since I sell them for a living.
What are you doing to try to reset it?, I remember the manual said something about turning the inition on and pressing the gas petal to the floor four times within 10 seconds, or something like that.

Who, by the way, IS using synthetic oil (Mobil One 10/30) with an AC/Delco oil filter.
The OnStar button, when equipped, is located on the "roof" portion of the overhead console.
and this one out for filters : http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oilfilterstudy.html
Should be more than enough information here to put this to rest.
rwagoner, I use Mobil 1 oil (10W-30)& Mobil 1 filter.

Whipple - a brand of Supercharger
Quad,
6.75 quarts?....doesn't it call for 5?
6.0 calls for 6..and dealer says use 6.5..
What do you consider the full mark?...at the end of the checker pattern?
6.5 in the 6.0 makes it about 3/4 of the checker pattern filled when warm...
I have thought about putting in more....after warmed up...or when it's dead cold?
hmmmm
here goes another debate..

1. What shocks did you go with and how is the ride.
2. Did you have to replace the driveshaft, and if so where did you get it from.
3. How loud is the 50 series inside the cab, i'm still not sure what muffler to go with, i want something that sounds good.
